The Red Wing 8061 vs The Red Wing 3340

- I compare the Red Wing Merchant 8061 and the Red Wing Blacksmith 3340. I have had the Merchant 8061 longer than the Blacksmith 3340. The Merchant does not have a toe box like the Blacksmith which creates a slimmer profile allowing one to wear the Merchant with a dressier pant. I have paired the Merchant with wool trousers and chinos. And, you all know how I feel about the Blacksmith 3340s!

Nice...Love the comparison and definitely Love the collection! These videos are great!!
Thank you so much! I hope to had more to the collection.
GREAT review! See THIS is how boots should be reviewed. Well worn & broken in! Those boots look F’ing gorgeous with that patina and character that you earned with many steps trekked in those! Don’t get me wrong, all your other reviews displaying the boots in new or slightly used condition are good also but THIS is what I look for, how well the leather ages over time, a good year or two into wearing them. To me they just get more beautiful with age and character. I slightly prefer those merchants to the blacksmiths due to the slimmer toe box giving it a sleeker profile. I’ve been watching your reviews consistently for about 5 or 6 months now and this is what finally motivated me to comment. Please do more reviews of the boots after they’ve aged & been broken in! That leather just gets prettier with age!
I've watched over half your videos tonight; quality stuff, man. I think I'm going for the 8064 (amber harness Merchants) as my third pair of Red Wings since they're a little more versatile compared to the 8085 and 875 boots that I have. I was tempted by the 3340s since I share your sentiment with how nice that briar oil slick leather looks, but I think I'll go for the versatility first. Keep up the good work with the videos!
Thank you! Yeah, The Merchant's slimmer profile makes them more versatile indeed. I have worn them with jeans as well as a wool trouser. The Amber Harness Leather on the 8064s will age beautifully!
Hi! I’m a big fan of your channel! Can you please do a video about how to choose a right sizing as it has always been a huge question for many lot of Red Wing fans. Thanks 😊
I just brought 3340's and mine look like your merchant's, I really hope they become more reddish like yours!
I would love to see a video of those Merchants getting some TLC. I’d be very interested to see how they look after they’re conditioned.
Me Too The Briar has a slight reddish/purplish undertones very slight
The ending of this video is very funny! Lot’s of people who haven’t spent as much time going over the subtleties of how Goodyear welted footwear are constructed wouldn’t understand that those two boots are built on completely different lasts. This would create completely different fittings.
Not only that, but letting your boots (which are investments) rest between wearings, so the leather can dry on tension of shoe trees, will prolong the life span of your footwear.
Your boots shown in your videos are aged very well. Instead of wearing one into the ground and throwing it away, having more than one in rotation helps to maintain product-life and sustainability.
These videos are awesome! Keep up the great work!! 🌎✨
Thank you Benjamin!
Damn that means I am going to have to invest in several pairs I wanted these as my every day boots. But I will take your advice and eventually get several in order to rotate. I like my boots to look nice . But I’ve looked at pics of worn pairs of Iron Rangers and the patina looks so nice. I want some of that distressed look on my boots eventually. Even the shabby looking ones look nice .
Hey CJ have you gotten around to treating the 8061’s yet? I’m curious if they darkened up on you with treatment.
Great review! I'm looking to grab the Merchant as I think it's gonna be a better option than the 1000 Mile boot. Thanks for the shout-out.....Looking forward to the 8062 vs 3344.
Thank you! I think a better purchase to compete with the 1000 Mile boot is the 9073 Sheldon. The Sheldon is a beauty! You are welcome for the shout-out, thanks for your support.
What's your RW Top 3? Dude you got the best RW review channel on the net.....thanks for the reviews!
TOP 3?! Whoa! OK... Red Wing 3340, Red Wing 4545 and I will hold onto the third one till next month and you shall see why. Thank you for the compliment!
wow, never even heard of the 4545..I looked it up and it blew my mind
Hahaha! Yeah, kick arse boots!
I wish they had the Vibram sole on the merchants as well - I don’t need the toe protection but I do need grip
Hey. Do you put shoe trees in the merchants? I like the unstructured toe box but I'm worried about it completely flattening and creasing right above the toes.
I do not. I move my shoe trees around as I have more boots than shoe trees, hahaha! So...currently my Merchants are shoe treeless
Oh man I want both !
Do it!
I had to come back to this video CJ. I finally figured out what I want in a RW boot. I want the Merchant in the Briar Oil color. I hope they make it so. Maybe we can put it out there telepathically and it gets picked up by RW uppers. What’s your opinion on what I would like to see in the Merchant? Another thing I bought the inserts and fortunately I can use them in my IR’s with either a thick sock or a thinner sock while I break them in. The salesperson said don’t break them in first without the insert but I said Na I have a theory here and fortunately for me it worked. Anyway like to hear what you think. Thanks a million..
Came here because of an add on the Dutch equivalent of Craigslist. Would you consider, when the time comes, swapping the original soles for the Vibram minilugs or the nitrile cork soles on the merchants?
Love your channel! Soothing therapy for my restless Red Wing soul…
Hmmm, yeah... maybe for cork.
I am about to buy the ebony merchants (my first pair of RW) and have a coupon I can use. What else should I get from the RW to go with the boot since I have this coupon? Any care products you recommend for this boot?? Thanks you
Red Wing's Leather Cream
Thank you so much!! Love the videos
ok, I watch ya vids to get ya reviews on different boots to see which ones I might like and see what pants you match wearing them.
thank you for watching!
Wondering if the Merchants would be considered another "flatbox" model, with that low-profile toebox.
Yes, they would
Nice.I snagged the black spitfire blacksmiths a couple years ago.The roughout has become so soft and great texture. For some reason it is the only blacksmith with leather toe vamp lining vs cloth or canvas like in my ir 8111's.Thanks for sharing.
The 2955s are a dream! I love mine and find them to be very comfortable.
@@CJCook Wearing mine today since its a rainy day in ga.
Fall taste of conyers in old town where they film vampire diaries.
Perfect! I am wearing the 9075s today.
@@15156495 Yeah, that would be a nice touch. How do you like the 2955s?
Hi CJ, what size do you wear for your Beckman, Blacksmith and Merchant respectively? from the sole comparison in this video, I notice your Merchant looks to be in a smaller size. Why I ask is because I wear a Beckman flatbox now and I'm trying to figure out what size I should get for a Merchant or Blacksmith. Thanks.
Hello Eugene, I wear an 8.5 in the Beckman, Blacksmith and Merchant.
@@CJCook Hi there, I spoke to the authorised Red Wing retailer in my country (Singapore), and I was told the Beckman's are coming back. The codes will be changed, previously were 90xx they will be recoded as 94xx. They are already available in the Japanese market. This should be reliable because I saw Beckman black featherstones on sale on a Japanese online portal coded as both 9014 and 9414.
@@selena6112 that is great news!
Can the merchant ebony harness be worn with black jeans or would that look too weird? If they had a black merchant I'd be more inclined to get those.. but ebony harness would go with more outfits
Yes, you could definitely wear the ebony harness with black jeans.
@@CJCook awesome, thanks for the reply.. I think im sold on these boots as my next pair of red wings... gotta start saving up now lol
@@bennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Great! You will love them!
Ben ... you'll love them, they are wider than the ranger what makes them very comfy. and the outsole is great. it's soft at walking and sticky that you want slip also on unstructured surfaces.
Great Video CJ! .. The Blacksmiths look better in my opinion .. I own the briar oil slick and they are very comfortable no break in period is the best part about the boot.. with the merchants I wouldn’t know my size all the redwings I have are from the 8 last ...
The Merchants are made on last 8
CJ Cook oh really I didn’t know that.. thank you CJ!
got the blacksmith is that color based on your recommendation.
I love Red Wings as well I own several pairs!
Awesome! How are they breaking in for ya?
@@CJCook bought them online, I don't have them yet, but also got another pair of blacksmiths. i used to like the 875's the most, but they just aren't versatile enough for my needs, but still dig the style
Great review! Just wanted to know what kind of insole do you use?
Thank you.
For the Beckman and certain Round Toes I use the Red Wing custom insoles. Which are sold in stores after stepping on a machine. For Blacksmith and Iron Rangers I use Dr. Scholl's inserts.
@@CJCook thanks!
@@yapster804 you are welcome.
Hi CJ, what product do you recomend should i use to take care of my Merchants in ebony harness? thank you for your nice videos.
I use mink oil
@@CJCook thank you for your fast answer man... You have a great channel.
@@les-chouans thank you
Excellent comparison and details. Enjoyed another RW video review. With the Merchants in your hand looking all slim and good I thought yeah those are nice and about time RW came out with a sleeker slimmer silhouette. But then you put on the Briar Oil boots and liked those even better toe box and all. The Briars speak as to say I’m RW with a good blend of ruggedness and refinement. The color put it over the top for me too. I have a version of the brown carpenter boots already-Indy Style. Have you seen the Kenton JCrew boots? These aren’t RW’s but very nice too. Thought I’d share. There’s the brown plain toe and also the Indy Style. I’m curios to know if you’ve seen these and what you think? Thanks.
Yes, I have seen the Kenton boots. They are perfect for the office! They cap toe reminds me of the Thorogood 1892 Dodgeville. They also look comfortable with the mini-lug sole.
Thanks CJ good feedback on those JCrew Kenton office boots. I noticed your Levi’s shirts that you wear. I need a green one like you have. Where do you order them or are they shirts or shirt jackets? Thanks kindly.
@@MeToo-py1tq Thank you. I am a huge fan of Levi's. I usually go to Levi's and try on the shirts because their sizes vary for me and I want to feel the fabric and make sure it is worth the $$. They are shirts not shirt jackets.
CJ Cook
Thank you for always taking the time to respond. I appreciate it always so thank you. Is there a name for those shirts by the way?
@@MeToo-py1tq You are welcome. You take the time to watch my content, it is only fair that I take the time to respond. The shirts are in the "worker" category - - all "worker" style.
I prefer the Blacksmiths great colour to them and great Leather
Do you wear the same size in all Red Wings? I have a pair of Iron Rangers and I wonder if I should get the same size Merchants.
Yes, thé Iron Rangers and the Merchants are made on the same last. I size up a half size on the 23 last which are the moc toes.
Thank you! @@CJCook
@@Reihe_sechs you are welcome
Can you do a 3340 vs a bloodox same boot if possible? I'm sure, you have every single boot bro. 😅 I'm pretty sure red wings ask you what boot should be next to be produced lol...
Do you expect the merchants to hold up as long as the other boots like the rangers and blacksmiths?
Yes, absolutely.
Great vid. What size are yours?
Thank you!
How are your Merchants almost 3 years after the video? Still going strong like others ie IR's and Blacksmiths? It deserves someone to invest in one pair or Merchants? I have one pair of Iron Rangers and I am between 1907 Moc toe and the Merchants. Totally different logic and models but which I should get first?
The Merchants are solid. I wore the hell out of those boots. They are still looking good.
@@CJCook definitely really encouraging! I should get both for sure! I will end up with 70 pairs as you lol
Be always well CJ!
Hey CJ would which one do you like better the merchant ebony harness or the ir ebony harness?
Did Red Wing make a Iron Ranger boots using a briar oil leather ?
No, not yet BUT I really want them to make an Iron Ranger in Briar Oil Slick leather.
You never reviewed 3343 or 8085, or basically any copper rough & tough leather, why is that?
Is it a bad leather or just you're personal preference? (And why if you don't mind saying)
I own the 8886 and the Engineers in Cooper Rough and Tough, the 9111 and now the 4572s. I don't own the 8085 cause I would rather own the 8115s. I bought the 3343s but I gave them to my dad.
The only boot you dont have is Williston i guess
What’s the difference between the 8114 and 8084? I think I am almost ready to make my first RW purchase . I hope I like them half as much as you do. I am having a hard time finding boots from manufacturers that have good Quality Control. So I am buying from the RW website and not from a distributor. Anyway people say these RW look like clown shoes but they look so bad ass on you. 😂 Maybe because you have a small feet they don’t look clownish. I am only 5’6” and a size 8 if I size one down. Maybe they won’t look clownish. on me. 🤡 Do you suggest going down 1 full size first or a 1/2 size(? Sorry about the lengthy text.
Are you an 8 in Nike?
The only difference between the 8114 and the 8084 is the sole. Vibram mini lug versus the Cork.
CJ Cook I’m a size 9 D in Nike Air Force 1 and also 9 D in New Balance. You said in your video you were a size 10 D but that you are a 9.5 in New Balance. Based on that info I am still not sure if I should go down and get size 8 on the IR 8084. *What size should I get?*
@@Orlanzepol123 7.5 in the Iron Ranger would fit you or an 8.
CJ Cook Thanks I really do appreciate that.
Goodyear welt on merchant? Or just on blacksmith.
Both. 270 degrees.
The 3340 hands down. My next RW boot.
Blacksmiths are the best!
CJ Cook - I just bought a pair today 😍
Got the 8064 new for $110 today, excited
Whoa! that is a GREAT deal!
@@CJCook I wonder, better deal than 8111 Iron Rangers for $90?
Where did you get them? I'd like to pick some up thanks.
CJ, at 5:17 on your merchants. The flex point has a bit of a bump in-between where the leather flexes. All my boots do the same on my big toe also so I have kind of a noticeable slight bump from when I crouch and flex its not uncomfortable, just something I noticed on all of my boots. I'm guessing that is normal? Funny how weird feet are. This is probably why leather is king when it comes to personalization and character/comfort.
Yeah, I usually place shoe trees in my boots to help with that bump in the leather.
@@CJCook Makes sense, I always thought I was the only one with this "problem" all though not really a problem. After browsing r/goodyearwelt and watching people like you and others I notice its quite common. Your boot knowledge is superb. Since your big into western flair now, ever think of getting a pair of packer boots?
@@Justin-pu7qi yes, I tried on a pair when I visited White’s boots. I like thé profile of the Packer.
@@CJCook Recently bought the mule packer, went down half a size from 10.5D brannock to 10D in the mule packer. Currently on day 9 of the break in. Arch support on those are wild. All Day!
CJ , how many Red Wings do you have? And do you rock other brands? I probably shouldn’t say this but you look more like an Allen Edmonds kind of shoe/boot guy. Hope that wasn’t an insult. 😆
I have over 70 pairs of Red Wing boots. I do not wear anything else 🤘🏽😎
CJ Cook WOW! 70? That’s crazy 😆. And I can understand sticking to just one brand. I was strictly Clark’s but have been introduced to AE and I’m feeling them. But I’ve been watching your videos for inspiration and I think I will invest in a RW boot. Well I did but Nordstrom sent me a woman’s size 8 1/2 in the Engineer boots . They don’t have any men’s so I missed out on them for $210. 😞

Heho! I bought the 8061 today 🤟🏻
Awesome congrats Vishal! You will love them. The break-in is minimal on the Merchant. They look really good with chinos.
Hi Visha...thinking about ordering the 8061 tomorrow. How have you found the comfort of the boot to be? I need them but also need to wear them 10 hours a day five straight days the second week of January. Thanks in advance for perspective. “Be a boot.”
Bravo + Gold Eagle hello, i would echo to what CJ said, the break in is really minimal. I wore this through out the entire day on the first day itself. But if you arenew to red wing, you might feel differently then.
8061👍😷
homey has a "boot problem"...as in where to put them all
True
Don’t understand why they don’t come in wide , a lot of people have wide feet
Super late but you can get them resized at NorthernRepublic. Extra money of course but if you like the boot 🤷♂️
I wish they made either of these in EE!!! No love for the fat-footed guys!!
Yeah, that is too bad. Hopefully Red Wing will take notice of the demand.
Were you raised by a single mother?
No
The Blacksmiths look cool. And have that awesome old fashioned style. And they remind me of when Men worked real hard and build countries. And could rest in peace knowing they did something useful.
The merchant looks exactly like all those cheap ass pretenders you can buy for people who work in Digital.
Redwing are moving for the fashionable crowd, but that's always a bad move, those crowds tire and move on. And after a while, adopt some other shit, never really caring either way.
REAL redwing , whites, thorougood, fans want the Shit our Grandparents had. And wear them everyday and not fucking Nike and Adidas. Men's clothes for fuck sake.
I think you should have to pass a test before you are aloud to buy real boots. Something like:
Use a hand Saw.
Measure something with a Vernier Caliper.
Explain why you tighten Engine head bolts in a sequence.
Eat some Beef.
List why Farmers are infinitely more valuable than bankers.
Drink a beer.
Be able to take a fucking Joke and laugh at yourself.
....
I need to breathe, I am all worked up.
The merchants are just a little dressier than the blacksmiths chill man.....are you insecure about your masculinity or something?
You don`t treat your boots but you touch sole without rubber gloves... I`d be disgusted ...
Hahaha! I am just as much a germaphobe as the next person (ask anyone who knows me). I simply wash my hands.
