  • “He’s proven to be a pretty catastrophically bad defence minister in wartime.”
Former defence minister Sergei Shoigu is a personal friend of Putin and so was saved from being dismissed from his regime entirely despite being unpopular with his troops, says Mark Galeotti.

I really don't read anything more into this removal of Shoigu than what meets the eye and obvious explanation that Putin has come to realize this war is going to go on for years. Moving Shoigu to the head of security council is more than just a polite way to get him out of the way, as that is what Shoigu is actually good at... he is a master politician and was never a military type. The new Defense minister now has the role of 'serving' the military by making sure they get everything they need. The most important military role inside the armed forces is now the Chief of staff - currently held by Gerasimov... It will be interesting to see if he keeps that job. Bottom line, this is NOT good news for Ukraine, just the opposite unfortunately in my view.
