The “out of focus” is a natural artifact from the panavision anamorphic lenses... and JC movies are not “natural light” it’s call low key lighting (yes that’s where you get the term low key... it’s a lighting term) he and Dean Cundey are big fans of a very source lit look.
My import of the Carpenter 4K set is arriving tomorrow, and I couldn’t be more excited. I wouldn’t even have known about it had it not been for your They Live review. Appreciate it!
I'll continue to bang on the drum that a 4K Blu Ray of THE THING would be an excellent addition to the medium. That's my all-time favorite Carpenter flick. What a banger. I've been keeping my eye open for a nice price on the set you've got. Thanks. Great review as always.
First watched this on Amazon Prime out of curiousity and ended up loving it a lot! The plot, the noir atmosphere and the characters! I ordered the Shout Factory 4K blu ray a week later. It's one of my favorite John Carpenter & favorite movie overall too!!
'Fast' film stock is usually far more grainy, than lower ISO daylight stock. When productions take time to light scenes adequately they can use 'Slower' less sensitive, less grainy stock. The introduction of faster film stock in the late sixties led to 'Hollywood' productions shooting with available light. This led to a more 'documentary' 'realistic' feel to movies, as movies were freed from being shot on sound stages, this is especially noticeable through the seventies. It was also cheaper (no lights and lighting crew), so low cost productions would often opt for available light. The low light also contributes to a low depth of field, often contributing to focus problems...
One of my all time favourite films. Great story, great characters, awesome soundtrack and a killer ending. The look of contempt on Snakes face after talking to the president is solid gold.
This release was such a huge deal. Upgraders were looking at nearly $30 a piece for these films for basically just the one disc for each film. I am planning on putting the 4K discs in the steelbooks I already have to make complete collections.
I always thought Lee Van Cleef was a mutant Ooompa Loompa due to his orange tan. So nice to see. Thanks for the review, and waiting impatiently for 4k Big Trouble....
Great set!! I have They Live and The Fog on 4K from Studio Canal. They Live is awesome as far as the picture and sound. The Fog was ok, but not as crisp as They Live. I still might pick up the Shout Factory versions of They Live for the Dolby Atmos and Princess Of Darkness all on 4K. Great reviews!!
I decided to get escape from new york on blu ray last year since hmv was charging £25 for the 4k version and it still is better than most new action movie's, great review.
I remember picking this up last year here in Australia and it’s one of my favourite movies and one of best Kurt Russell movies and great review as always Jeff I hope to pick up they live prince of darkness and the fog soon in 4K by studio canal
Its funny but when I think of "escape from new York" and " the thing " I always recall the VHS versions 😊 and all the drop outs you'd get from a well watched rental copy happy days !
Nice, the review I was waiting for 😁 And I am glad to see the color and shadow detail is a major step up from the blu-ray. Hoping Arrow or someone like that distributes in the US.
Thanks for making me aware of this set. I already own all of the SF blu ray editions of these films, so double dipping just for the 4k discs was not something I was going to do.
Probably going to stick with my DVD copy of Escape From New York but it's an awesome movie! Glad you are pleased with this release. I have a 12 Hour Movie Marathon planned out for Saturday and this is one of the movies that are in it.
On Blu Ray Escape From New York (much to my disappointment) the part where it says David 14 is AIRFORCE ONE on the monochrome screen is blurry, probably due to HD upsample settings. Should have been hand edited.
sorry but there is NO NEED for a movie as old as this on 4k....i mean i had the vhs, then i bought a widescreen copy...then i had it in dvd......then i got a nice edition on bluray....these companies really are milking us dry, re-issue after re-issue...i know its all about personal taste, anyway.....love your channel and content....KEEP ON, KEEPIN ON!!
I actually rewatched L.A. recently, it’s nowhere near as good as New York, but I really enjoyed seeing it again. Just seeing Kurt as Snake again makes it worthwhile.
I got it last week from Amazon Canada for $70, totally worth it! I would have cost me the same for They Live and Prince of Darkness alone. The Thing must be coming.. I got the steelbook from Shout Factory few years back and it said it was a new 4K transfer. Maybe next year for the 40th anniversary?
There are now some 4k Discs that are region locked. Can you look into this? Greenland Nordic 4k disc is one of these and I've heard rumors about others as well.
You mentioned that the 4K transfer from Canal house version and the Shout factory are the same, but I have heard different. Have you watched both versions?
This is off subject and I apologize, but I'm wondering why I'm not able to find The pianist on Blu-ray? I bought a copy from Amazon and not till it got home and I tried to play it did I find out it was region B... Needless to say I was upset.
I just got the Blu-Ray release today and it must be my TV/player combo because the movie looks similar to the 4k release. The release I have has both Studio Canal and Scream factory on the credits. I'm not going to get the 4 disk collection because I really didn't like Prince of Darkness.
Escape From New York is the only movie I saw in the movie theater during this entire pandemic. Classics really are the ideal films due to the limited seat regulation since they're unlikely to fill a theater anyway.
I was lucky enough to pick this up for about £15 on sale. I haven’t watched it since I was it back on VHS so for me it was an insane bump on quality. Nothing beats the wow factor of Batman 89 for me tho. (Yet)
I love the covers of these 4k disc artwork! I’d buy the John Carpenter’s 4k films from Europe but I cannot stand the rating system on the front! My eyes go straight to the ratings and it pulls me away from the experience. Does the rating icon come off or is it printed on the cover?
Sorry for the dumb question, but are the separate versions of these that came out in europe all better quality-wise, or are they the same versions that are all on the one disc (Escape From New York / They Live / The Fog / Prince of Darkness (John Carpenter 4K Collection) )? Thanks!
Going to have to disagree immensely on the focus issue, nothing good comes out of any of those shots. The out of focus parts are painfully washed out... I watched They Live right before hand and didn't notice that much in comparison to Escape. The computer CGI - digi map looks very sharp in 4k... and when the shots are in focus, the wet ground looks great with the light reflecting. I don't remember if the original 4:3 VHS copy cropped out the exterior shot of the WTC but in 4k, you can see how small the building is to what it should of been.
Hi Jeff, just a curiosity, do any of the John Carpenter 4K movies either this 4 pack or the standalones, come with a digital code? I like the physical media but like to gift the digital keys to friends and I have some that I know love these movies.
Buy the John Carpenter 4K Collection :amzn.to/2MQ7fwB
Physical Media .... Old School... PERSONAL COLLECTION.... Mine!!! MY PRECIOUS !!!!
BUY the movies you love.
besides "the thing" I'd love to see Assault on Precinct 13 on 4K

The Thing and Big trouble in little China please
I'd like to add "In the Mouth of Madness" to that list. It even has a 4K transfer already.
You're not alone!
"The thing" must have Dolby vision please universal 😊
I think that Arrow might release that one - I hope they do!
I'd rather Shout! Factory do it.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork why? Arrow release in the US as well as the UK
Such a great film. The world needs more Plissken.

Reason why they use grain, because if they don't use it, then it will have rainbow/wave effect in the background. The grain hides it.
One of my all time favourite films. Great story, great characters, awesome soundtrack and a killer ending. The look of contempt on Snakes face after talking to the president is solid gold.
I will be getting mine today. Big Carpenter fan here. Cant wait to check it out and thankfully it works in U.S.

''ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK'' is being released again in ''4K'', this time in a U.S. release 3 disc special edition on May 17th.
I decided to get escape from new york on blu ray last year since hmv was charging £25 for the 4k version and it still is better than most new action movie's, great review.
The 4 pack is available on the Amazon Canadian site. Price today is $69.99 (CDN).
Literally just watched escape from New York last week. Super 80s
Super 2020.
Ordered the John Carpenter 4K collection today !!
You can find the single movie in 2 pack BluRay and 4K on HMV online, in the UK.

Hey Jeff Do a review of Roland Emmerich’s 2012 4K blu ray
And subbed. I've been wanting to know more about great blurays.
Nice, the review I was waiting for 😁

John Carpenters best Film period

Good video review
I always wait for reviews of movies
Must have. Best of all movies there is. Carpenter is unbeatable, just like Stephen King 👍🏻
Nice review! Question: Did you use the old MGM Blu or the Shout Factory Blu for this comparison? Thank you
The blu-rays won't play in U.S. players, FYI. The 4k discs work because they got rid of Regions for UHD discs in the official specs/standards.
This came out in 2018 in the UK
Is there a release date for the Fog 4K Scream Factory?
Watching this review in anticipation of the scream factorys upcoming release. This will be the same presentation right(just different bonus features)?
Jbhifi is having a sale for this collection right now only $19.95 AUD for the collection. Going to pick it up.
That’s a steal
Snake rocks in Escape From New York. Love the movie and the cast! Too bad the next Snake movie Escape From L.A. sucked.
I actually rewatched L.A. recently, it’s nowhere near as good as New York, but I really enjoyed seeing it again. Just seeing Kurt as Snake again makes it worthwhile.

Was able to buy the 4k 4 collection on ebay do you think i should wait and buy the shout factory for the atmos?
Just bought it on Amazon US site, $59 and I'm happy.
i had the chance to buy these here in scandinavia but i missed out and now they're all sold out on 4K
Which Escape from New York blu ray are you using for this comparison? Thank you

Does the 4 movie collection have Spanish subtitles?
Big trouble in little China is carpenter's best movie, need it in 4k
Loving these John carpenter reviews, really hoping they bring the thing, big trouble in little china and assault on precinct 13 to 4k

yeh we NEEEEED "GOOD" Atmos on all 4k releases to make rebuying really worth it!!!!!!
Can you do a bluray review of Blue Thunder? I need your assessment of the Audio Mix
I believe that Shout! Factory’s gonna due “The Fog” and “Escape From New York” soon. “The Thing” will come this year.
Awesome , you rule 😎
Does it include the deleted scenes version, which I like better?

Thanks for the early heads up for this. Though is this 2160p native?
It is a 4k scan of the original 35mm negative with a 4k digital intermediate from what I have read.
@@Tim._.. really? must be native then

This set doesn’t but I’m Not sure about the standalone. I know the Shout Factory American releases don’t either.
Honestly, should just wait for the ScreamFactory 4K
Just grabbed it on Amazon US for $59.99
Speaking of out of focus -- if you have to choose something on you to be in focus, it should be the EYES, and your eyes are ALWAYS out of focus.
Are you gonna review the actual Scream...THEY LIVE? I have a feeling Kino will release ..ESCAPE IN NY. Maybe Arrow in the UK.
It looks a lot better but let’s be honest not much better to fork out an extra £10!!
It just has that John Carpenter feel. It's not the greatest film but it's just one of his films that has it's own uniqueness. I own the bluray
It’d be so sweet to get In the Mouth of Madness on 4K.
Yeah! So waiting for that one.
Can somebody please back me up...
We need “the Hangover” in 4k
I woke up to you and Biden
Love Carpenter, but thought this was a slog of a film, and a poor 4k disk.
Only watched this movie recently but to be honest it's way overrated IMHO, only a one time watch and found it to be boring
The best part of this film is the first act before he goes into the city, the rest is forgettable.
Dolby vision is overrated IMHO, standard HDR image is good enough, hardly any difference
