I'm so jealous...You lucky rascal...Even if you weren't feeding it to your worms, this treasure trove would be great for gardens, flower beds, yards in general... "One man's trash, is another man's treasure. " Man, you scored a big one! Keep those wigglers fat, dumb & happy!
Brilliant.
i was originally going to start a mushroom farm start-up but started worms instead as they are more kid friendly
I saw mushroom substrate being used in the worm bins on the Northeast Worms channel. The worms are gonna love it! Yum yum!!!
Nice… I’ll have to look that video up. I first saw Joe at Venezia Worms in MA using substrate.
Hey Cap I was watching one of your old videos about feeding worms grain , well I just wanted to let you and your followers that cheap wild bird feed works very well . I even used cheap wild bird feed in florida on one of my properties when i couldnt get grass to grow because of the dry sand . I used the bird food to shade the bermuda grass seed till it took off . So all in all I have had many uses for this wild bird seed and it is what I use now in my worm bins in Vermont .
Thanks for all your great videos , you shurely are a treasure trove of information .
P.S. I suck at typinjg....
I've found, by accident, that wild bird seed also grows the thickest thatch of grass I have ever seen. It's literally 6" thick under my bird feeder. So I'm sprouting some for the worms as well as organic wheat grass that was donated to my rescue back when I had a farm.
My heart is so big listening to you talk about how you source your worm food resources 🥰 I originally got into worm composting TO divert food waste from the landfills ,so targeting waste streams to capture from business was the purpose 😁
Just outstanding. I learn so much from this channel. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
Hey Captain Matt, We are running a vermicomposting unit out here in India since close to a year now, unfortunately it is difficult to get green degradable items as worm food hence we only use cattle dung some 10-15 days old as worm food. Also we use the windrow method for making beds wherein plastic sheets of about 20-23 feets long are laid on the floor and the worm food is spread on then further after putting the worms on it the beds are covered with rice straw. THIS IS THE WAY! GREAT SUGGESTION
I seen some people use mushroom substrate as feed. I believe the worms really like it. If you add a teaspoon of dried molasses to it and put it on the surface, they will go crazy 😅Great video.😊
Such great content. We just acquired substrate from a mushroom guy for our growing bus for trees. He just started but is growing lion's mane. We started up at the same time so we are growing together. He hooks us up with blocks and we give him produce. ^^ win, win for everyone. So glad you mentioned to add water...lot of folks don't think of that.😊
Great to hear! This type of collaboration is so valuable.
Worms love mushroom compost!! Tip - soak the blocks in water first.
You are so inspiring. I feel so blessed to have found your page.
Great to hear, Tracey. Glad to see you over in the discussion forum at WormPeople.com as well!
Hi, I appreciate you, your knowledge and insight. How do I keep ants out of my worm bed? I’m using an old bathtub and I’m in Florida. Thank you very much
Matt this is awesome. As I just mentioned on another video I've just found your channel. I grow my own mushrooms and am looking at getting into worm farming. This is a win/win for me!
Fantastic!
Excellent video, Captain Matt 👍
I would add a 4-6” layer at the bottom of the big bins so the ones that stay near the bottom have a food layer
Awesome video! Thanks cap!
What a great idea
Man Cap sure can tell a story.
But have those horses been fed hay that was sprayed with Grazon or similar substances. Make sure you ask that. "Weed free" hay has been sprayed and will kill your garden.
Most hay isn’t weed free cause it’s more expensive. Most folks only buy weed free hay thanks to the Forest Service requiring weed free hay in the mountain. In my valley only hunters or outfitters buy weed free hay. Besides obeying the law that it’s a waste of money.
Haha the feedlot close by the government has 1000 wild horses being fed and 200 donkeys. They eat premium dairy hay top dollar. I do know one farmer that has organic weed free hay cause he hires teenagers to pick weeds. I know cause I did it once as a teen. So you can have weed free hay that’s organic. I forgot to mention that in my other comment.
Not worried about the weeds but what they've sprayed on it to get rid of them. If it's Grazon it will go through the animals system and still kill your garden for a couple years, regardless of composting.
Wow you hit the jackpot with that
Another great inspiration!
Is it okay to grow mushrooms in the bin
Great video series! Isn’t dewormer in horses and their manure a concern? Seems kinda sketchy.
I believe the meds that de-worm horses do not pose a threat to worms used for vermicomposting. They are for parasitic worms
Yay for free food! These worms are eating good! 🪱❤️
Sent an email to discuss getting information from you. Have not heard back
Is this a food source or bedding?
Food source if fresh… after composting sufficiently, it could be bedding input.
Captain mat can u explain more?
Like how to compost it first?
This mushroom substrate is 'green material or brown material?
I've built a worm bid that I want to keep outside (don't have a worm shed), how should I cover it
What type of bin do you plan to use?
What do you use to grind all your worm food?
Thank you
Hi Jen, Take a look at my videos - there’s a few on processing/grinding bulk expired produce we get from the market.
@@CaptainMattsWorms I found the video after I asked the question, thank you
