Star Wars Weekends 2009 - Special Effects Edition

- All lightsabers and blasters done frame by frame in Photoshop! The rest of the editing was done in iMovie 5. Overall, I'm happy with the way this video turned out although sometimes youtube's playback is a little choppy so some of the laser gun effects get skipped over. I recommend pausing the video and letting it load before playing.

I recommend watching some of the tutorials on youtube. That's how I learned. Just search for "lightsaber photoshop". Whatever way you do it, save it in the actions box so that all you have to do is trace the lightsaber then hit play and it will automatically do all the steps. Of course you have to do this for each frame which takes a lot of time.

It depends on how many lightsabers are in the shot but I would say It took about an hour to do 5 seconds (about 150 frames). Also, the laser guns don't take nearly as long.

@LegoBen In iMovie5 go to File>Save Frame. Or you can choose Share(or Export on iMovie6)>Expert Settings>then Export Movie to Image Sequence and it will save all the frames at once. Open them in Photoshop and draw the lightsaber on each picture. Drag them all back into iMovie and cut each picture so it lasts one frame.

If I do something like this again I'll probably try a different way. I don't have After Effects so maybe I'll look into it. Doing it in Photoshop actually wasn't that hard once I figured out how to save the steps in the actions box!

i can't wait till we have the real lightsabers. Their going to be made out of cold plasma so they can cut through anything just like in the movie.

The first thing I do is trace the lightsaber with the lasso. Then, this may not make a lot of sense, but here are the steps as they appear in my actions box:
Make layer, Fill, Set Selection, Duplicate layer, Duplicate layer, Duplicate layer, Gaussian Blur, Select Layer "Layer 1 copy 2", Gaussian Blur, Select Layer "Layer 1 copy", Gaussian Blur, Select Layer "Layer 1", Gaussian Blur, Select Layer "Layer 1 copy 3", Merge Layers, Merge Layers, Merge Layers, Color Balance, Merge Layers
Interesting mix of star wars fans with little or no hand-to-eye coordination and 'endearing' nerd looks and others with good coordination and looks ;-)

Well, you see there's this academy where you learn the Ways Of The Force and when you graduate you are taken to the power crystal caves where you fashion your own Light Sabre. The little ones in this video are just early advance pupils, they excelled and were permitted construction at an early age.
Oh and VAMPIRES DON'T SPARKLE!!
But they do make for excellent spare ribs.

I do know what plasma is and i only know this information about lightsabers being made from cold plasma because i saw it on the science channel. Look it up on their website it may be there.
iMovie5 and Photoshop. It took A LOT of time and patience but I'm happy with the result. I got the sound effects from various websites. I just did a search for "lightsaber sound effects" and "star wars sound effects."
How did the Stormie do that?
