My Tomato Seedlings Are Yellow and Dying!

  • My poor tomato seedlings! They are yellow and dying. And I have no one to blame but myself, because they are nitrogen deficient due to using a potting soil without any added nutrients or fertilizer. Don't be like me. Come and watch me fail to learn from my mistake. Hopefully my plan will save my babies.

    Hi, don't panic, you will get there, gardens are by nature not be calendar. The toms will bounce back in no time, and when you plant them the lower part is in the dirt so just plant extra deep this year, if my toms or anything else in the garden looks a bit off i give a sequestered seaweed liquid feed, perks them up no end,

    So for professionals they leave the type of fertilizer up to the grower? One could mix in compost, worm casting etc. or use water soluble fertilizer (which includes compost tea)?
    Direct seeding starting april 1st?!? When is your last frost?
    I want to see if I can use the mini blocks to sprout beet seed. Two beds worth of beets = 1080 beets seedlings. That's 54 sets of that mini block maker. How are you starting beet seedlings? Do you have a video on it?
    Wish I could grow tomatoes outside. I would have a flat or two started like you too (except make sure they have fertilizer, LOL). I think I need to go ahead and work on that green house I had planned over the summer.
    Good luck with the growing!!!

      Lots of greenhouses will have a system for mixing in liquid fertilizer directly into the water that they use to irrigate all their plants, so they wouldn't want to be double dosing anything. At least that is my guess why it's that way. I have a powdered slow release fertilizer called Gaia's Green and then some compost that I mixed into mine. It's kind of a pain in the butt though, lol.
      Charles Dowding had a really good video about growing beets from seedlings.

    I been using a professional mix for years Premier pro-mix bx or Pgx ! I just bought premier pro-mix hp that drains really well ! Once the true leaves show I feed them with a compost tea every two weeks ! When I transplant them to 4” containers I use fox farm ocean forest or Malibu potting soil!

      That is the smart way to do it, lol. Next time I'll do better. Though I might just be lazy and buy the hardware store potting mix because the price was the same too, and I have good luck with it.

    The white leaves look like burn from lights to close, but i see that your lights are not close at all. Good luck with them.

      I wonder if it might be a combo thing, they started to suffer, and then they got a little sunburned. Because some of the leaves do look like that

      Are your lights on 24/7 or do you turn them off 8 hrs. Mine did that before I learned they needed a break from lights. Too much water can do that too. Don't love them to death by drowning or over fertilizing. Be patient. They are resilient...and you are too! You encourage me.🌷🌷🌷

    I'm seeing it's normal for the first leaves (not real leaves) to turn yellow/white so the news ones can come

      We're trying to stay focused to keep things as tight to the schedule as possible, but you have to work with the weather. Im sure we will both get gardens eventually, lol

    Don't stress too much, plans can be altered. Here in Central Indiana our last day of potential frost is April 28! I get to start my seeds on Sunday though 😀😀😀😀😊😊😊☺☺☺!!!!

      Our last frost date is around beginning of May I think. Though I'm being extra careful about stuff here since it will be my first spring, and I think I'm a half or even a zone colder here. I've ordered in a light weight cover to protect early things against frost though. My countdown date is beginning of June, when our farmers market start. I want to have lots of options for that first market.

      @@youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019 Don't blame you there! I'm actually starting my seeds two weeks later this year. My tomatoes got pretty leggy last year😕!

    Serina, sounds like somebody should get out the snow blower and remove the snow the hard way (but easier than a shovel). Apparently the weather didn't get a copy of your farm schedule. When is the big stump remover machine going to show up? Good luck.

    • @youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019
      @youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019  5 лет назад

      Lol, Ian's machines will never be here, but we might be renting a stump grinder. The snow is almost rented now.

      This was a couple days ago, and they still aren't looking that great. I'm going to pot them up this weekend to try and give them a bit more of a fighting chance.

    I've got my fingers crossed for your little seedlings.
    Could it be possible to run a hose from the shower head, so you won't have to take the trays out from the shelves?

    • @youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019
      @youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019  5 лет назад +1

      The trays are on the wire shelves with the lights right underneath them, so I would have to pull them off to make sure the lights don't get damaged. It will be easier when everything is in the greenhouse and I can just spray water everywhere.

    My spinach seedlings are having the same issue. I need to get on it! Tomatoes are too small yet.

      My spinach that overwintered is starting to grow out in the garden. it makes me happy to see in ground things growing again. I've never tried seedlings of it though. Everytrhing is so much easier to take care of in the ground

    Hi Serina, I am in the same boat for getting my seeds in the ground. I am in upstate N.Y. and have had bad luck getting anything in the ground on time over the last two seasons the cycle of them have been way off and late... I am a one man band on a 10 acre organic farm 2 of which I farm and expanding every year... I love you family and channel keep up the good work and those seeds will hit the soil soon. Peter

    • @youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019
      @youcanteatthegrass-todayon3019  5 лет назад +1

      I mixed in compost and a powder fertilizer when I did my other seedlings, just the first tomatoes and peppers didn't get anything. I don't usually fertilize anything above and beyond the potting mix. But bigger stuff also gets potted up into more soil at the 4 week point
