Should I just pour baking soda into the soil or dilute into water. I live in Alabama and our heat index/"feel like" temps have been around 100-104 and also we have had A Lot of rain as well. I have 5 beef steak tomato plants- planted in 5 gallon buckets (every plant is affected) and they are dying/yellowing with brown spots from the bottom up. My fruit are beautiful green and about Small/medium size but don't seem to be getting bigger. Any help would be appreciated. The are no blemishes or spots on the fruit.
@@2MeNew2 I usually mix a quarter cup in with a gallon of water, add a little castille soap too , it helps it stick and kills some bugs too…get rid of any bad leaves first…I actually just lost a beds worth because I got dirt from a neighbor and it most likely had commercial herbicides, had severe leaf curl all the way up…sad day it was Friday…

My poor beef steaks look like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree already. I'm afraid to remove anymore leaves. But I will definitely take your advice and will do this immediately.

I luv the welsh accent, makes it more satisfying to listen to. now ive got room for bulding the first raised bed of 6 (to my plan). all the stuff ive grown so far have been a success. its my first year after many years not grwoing. next year ive got some big plans to grow lots. ive got 2 woormerys on the go too, these castings will be part of my soil mix. ive also got 3 composting bins on the go so will be mxing this with manure that i will mix up in the winter so its got time to rot for next spring. Thanks for that tip about bacterial wilt. I'm in the US SE, and I've never heard of it. Been growing tomatoes for 5+ years, and mine get eaten up by something 1/2 way thru the season. I get a lot of brown spots with yellow around them, but usually not curling up until it gets fairly advanced. Time to get Medieval upon its buttocks.
They're always fantastic in the beginning, so lush and green with lovely emerging friut......but as time goes by, the insects, bacteria and fungus settle into their new home you made for them and then all the problems emerge..yay....not not not growing them again! The supermarket is the best place for me.
I planted 4 spots in a small garden with 2 in each spot muskmelons. 3 of them did well, one never grew and both the plants died. I replaced them with a tomato plant identical to 2 others in the garden that were doing very well. It just never grew much at all, but flowered and produced tomatoes, in spite of being less than 2 feet tall while the others grew normally. Does anyone care to speculate what is wrong with that spot? It got the same fertilizers as the other two spots. The plants just can't seem to uptake enough nutrients to grow there.
Seems I have leaf blight that came on quickly after watering my (overcrowded) tomatoes with a spray nozzle. Not sure if that caused it but next year I'll remember what i learned in this great video

Blossom end rot can be improved quickly with foliar seaweed extract applications followed by upping your watering. I have literally reversed it in early stage application in fruits by using it.
Thank you for this! No matter where or how I plant my tomatoes - in a different garden, in pots of new potting soil, mulched or not, my tomatoes die from some sort of wilt, right after setting lots of fruit. Please don't use stock photography in your videos - just more photos of your subject matter.
This was a fantastic video. I've experienced wilting and curling from fungus but thus everything is going super. Your video educated me about compost mistakes I would have made. The temp here isn't getting hot enough for the the compost to smoke from energy as it breaks things down. Thank you.

My neighbour had it, my outdoor tomatoes had it first and even though I disposed of them immediately. It was already in the air.. I keep my greenhouse well aired, windows permenantly open and doors open early and closed at the end of the day. But it’s all done now ... so upwards and onwards for next season.
Great video and advice to prevent or control diseases of your tomatoes. Tomatoes also benefit from social distancing from other plants. Pests can also cause diseases so it may help to control pests.
I have some yellowing variegation on some of the leaves on almost all of the 100 plants I have in pots. They are about 8 weeks old since planting, and I used old potting soil, old pots and grew them in close proximity to each other. I was hoping it was just a nitrogen deficiency, but I fear I will lose the lot. Fingers crossed ...

I am a beginning gardener. My Early Girl tomatoes are beautiful but.. they have begun to look very weird. As they are ripening from green to red, they appear to be disintegrating from the inside. I have checked for worms and pests and have found some on the leaves and stems but the tomato appears like it has been bruised. Looks kind of sunken in spots. I cut them open and there are no pest inside. The insides are kind of woody looking (like heirlooms look inside) but solid part of the tomato is sweet and tasty. Do you have any idea what is going on? Another variety of tomato which is growing very near the early girls has not been effected at all. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Last year i grew my usual 5 tomato plants in my greenhouse & i bought a cheap green poly-tunnel and grew another 6 in there, i found the tomatoes in the poly-tunnel had a lot of issues due to the fact that during the night the condensation would build up so badly that by morning when i opened he doors and windows it was like a heavy rainstorm inside, over the months every tomato plant had either curly leaves or blight,i tried everything even using a dehumidifier but it was a disaster so this year i am sticking to the greenhouse for the tomato plants!
@@simplifygardening Yeah, it was one of those cheapish green ones for about £75 quid, there seemed to be no way of stopping the condensation even by leaving all the windows open overnight didn't seem to help. I did get a few big tasty tomatoes right towards the end of the season but overall it some of the tomato plants looked very ill due to the amount of condensation and the amount of water on their leaves.
Another great video Tony! But I have a tomato plant that looks totally healthy, grown in a twenty gallon bag. No signs of disease but as my tomatoes ripen, the bottom of the fruit is getting dark gray and squishy, working it’s way up. I’m thinking too much water is preventing calcium intake? Not sure…
My young tomato plants are about 4 weeks old about 6in high and the growing centers are starting to turn yellow and the main stem is starting to bend, however the outside leaves look green and healthy
I'm in the cooler Canadian climate... And growing season is short.. with lots of pest, and leaf spot And my number one prevention and maintenance go to is a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and one part distilled water..... It's also a great insecticide
@@lorrainesavoie1394 ....make sure it's 3% vol hydrogen peroxide.....and never spray on hot sunny days...do so on a cloudy day....or sunset. You will notice a dark vibrant color green of your plants within a few hours of spraying. This solution us used both as insecticide and fungicide prevention

Epsomsalts is Magnesium Sulfate, not Calcium. Blossom end rot has little to do with Epsom salts. The regular consistent uptakeof calcium in aqueous solution is the way to avoid it. Regular, and consistent watering, as you mention is the key.

I live in LA & have a very small garden that is filled with tomato plants. I have Roma’s, beef steak, purple tomato’s etc. My tiny yard is also the only place to have a smoke. Me, visitors & friends ash right in my garden for a bigger yield each year. I wish I could send pics. On 2 plants I have over 20 tomato’s they are huge tomato’s too, no Cherries! So I’m a bit confused.
I’m a first time gardener and my plants & forming tomatoes are beautiful but I planted too many too close together. Can I transplant them while they are fruiting or just hope for the best….

it's surprising how many people handle the stems of tomato seedlings, tony. for smokers this is a big problem. the nicotine on fingers is a major problem. unfortunately, i'm a smoker, but handling the seedling, like any other seedling by the leaf when pricking out helps.......................brian
Hi Tony and all. Will mulch my plants today, and trim away any lower leaves near the soil. I'm growing them in my sun room, which I otherwise don't use and I have blossom end rot on only one of my plants a beef tomatoe. The garden centre sold me calcified seaweed crystals to add to the soil. The water I use goes through a lime removal system does that have an impact?
I think one of my tomato plants has Grazon poison. My tomatoes are pointed and the leaves stay curled even after watering. Rutgers don’t grow round tomatoes that are pointed on the ends

I don't know what to do about my plants. They were doing excellent bit now are not looking great. It looks like blight but the fruit is also damaged. I was thinking it may be grasshoppers spreading a sickness. I have alot of grasshoppers.the fruit is splitting really bad at the vine. Am I watering to much? It's my first year and I'm still learning
If you give them ventilation mate then the pests are rare, ive had no problem for the past 10 years, but chillies and tomatoes prefer slightly different conditions. Loved the wine video pal
I have just planted some Roma tomatoes. when i checked them this morning I noticed large white splotches on them. When i looked closer ihe white patches seem to be areas that the green chlorophyll has leached out. it is not a fungus that is fuzzy.
I was wondering if mulching either tomato’s and potatoes increased the presence of slugs and snails. Have you found a increase or decrease in slug damage .?
No debra, it could give them somewhere to hide, but when they are dry on surface the slugs dont like crawling on it. I have a load of brassicas out with mulch around and no issues
The blossoms on all my tomato plants (Brandywine, San Marzano, SuperSteak, Dr. Wyche’s, Big Beef, etc) are drying up and falling off. All the leaves look green and healthy. I’m in northern ca zone 10b. Is there a remedy for this or should I rip em all out and start over? I started everything in seeds. Thank you Tony and more power!
Simplify Gardening the temps here for the past few weeks have been 65-70 deg days and 50 nights. We did have hot, dry conditions in Feb & March with 45 deg nights and 70-85 deg dayswhen it was supposed to be still winter. Thanks again! I will give them K and hopefully I get fruit! Hi Tony. Many many thanks for this - so helpful. I notice you haven’t mentioned Bordeaux Mixture at all. I remember my mum using it in the greenhouses (she was a market gardener) and I can buy it here in France as Bouille Bordelaise. But I don’t know what it actually is or whether it is something horrid? It is used for a number of mildew related problems including blight. Just wondering, as well, while we’re on the subject of tomatoes, any ideas why my very healthy, strong looking plants have such pathetic trusses this year ? Thanks again. Steph from France

Hi... I'm new to ur channel 🙂 I've a question about this topic. Recently I came to know about growing tomato plant from the ripe tomato slice n I use that method almost 2 weeks ago n it works. The plants came out 1 or 2 inch in size but the problem is they look very week n not healthy n growth is not well I feel. I feel there some bacterial attacks in the plants or soil thats why they look unhealthy n not growing as well. Same things happens with my pumpkin plant. They r 3 to 4 inch in size but get yellowed and Their top parts r falling like someone plucked the new stem😣 I don’t no how to fix it. Pls suggest me solutions of these 2 problems 🙏 pls reply. Great video Tony. You look like a guy that knows his way around a plant pot. I’m looking for some advice, I’ve recently started growing some herbs in my attic. I’ve insulated everything to keep the warmth in and sorted out lighting and ventilation and all that but I’m struggling to get my plants to grow more than sort of 2 ft in height. Really looking for a good crop and just don’t think I’m nailing the fertiliser side of things. Any advice would be awesome.
I was close to having a great crop of tomatoes, then it rained everyday for about a month, they all died, out of 30 plants I might have got around 30 tomatoes, the cherries lasted the longest.

Water your soil not the plant, keep your plants trimmed, use mulch and treat with copper fungicide and or baking soda...I rarely have issues

Update: I severely trimmed all lower leaves, maybe a third or more of the foliage. Massive harvest later in the year, nothing died

I am a beginning gardener. My Early Girl tomatoes are beautiful but.. they have begun to look very weird. As they are ripening from green to red, they appear to be disintegrating from the inside. I have checked for worms and pests and have found some on the leaves and stems but the tomato appears like it has been bruised. Looks kind of sunken in spots. I cut them open and there are no pest inside. The insides are kind of woody looking (like heirlooms look inside) but solid part of the tomato is sweet and tasty. Do you have any idea what is going on? Another variety of tomato which is growing very near the early girls has not been effected at all. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Do you mean cracks covered with dry tissue? If you do, that's from rain. Water can sightly open up tomatoes like how Figs ripen.
Last year i grew my usual 5 tomato plants in my greenhouse & i bought a cheap green poly-tunnel and grew another 6 in there, i found the tomatoes in the poly-tunnel had a lot of issues due to the fact that during the night the condensation would build up so badly that by morning when i opened he doors and windows it was like a heavy rainstorm inside, over the months every tomato plant had either curly leaves or blight,i tried everything even using a dehumidifier but it was a disaster so this year i am sticking to the greenhouse for the tomato plants!
Yes Nick ventilation is key. This was why when i built my tunnel I put windows the entire length of it. I havent had blight in over 10 years
@@simplifygardening Yeah, it was one of those cheapish green ones for about £75 quid, there seemed to be no way of stopping the condensation even by leaving all the windows open overnight didn't seem to help. I did get a few big tasty tomatoes right towards the end of the season but overall it some of the tomato plants looked very ill due to the amount of condensation and the amount of water on their leaves.

Another great video Tony! But I have a tomato plant that looks totally healthy, grown in a twenty gallon bag. No signs of disease but as my tomatoes ripen, the bottom of the fruit is getting dark gray and squishy, working it’s way up. I’m thinking too much water is preventing calcium intake? Not sure…

My young tomato plants are about 4 weeks old about 6in high and the growing centers are starting to turn yellow and the main stem is starting to bend, however the outside leaves look green and healthy

I'm in the cooler Canadian climate... And growing season is short.. with lots of pest, and leaf spot
And my number one prevention and maintenance go to is a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and one part distilled water..... It's also a great insecticide

@@lorrainesavoie1394 ....make sure it's 3% vol hydrogen peroxide.....and never spray on hot sunny days...do so on a cloudy day....or sunset. You will notice a dark vibrant color green of your plants within a few hours of spraying. This solution us used both as insecticide and fungicide prevention

From watching an earlier one I would like to mention justone small thing: You strike me as the kind of guy who likes to keep his facts straight; a matter of credibility. Epsomsalts is Magnesium Sulfate, not Calcium. Blossom end rot has little to do with Epsom salts. The regular consistent uptakeof calcium in aqueous solution is the way to avoid it. Regular, and consistent watering, as you mention is the key.

I live in LA & have a very small garden that is filled with tomato plants. I have Roma’s, beef steak, purple tomato’s etc. My tiny yard is also the only place to have a smoke. Me, visitors & friends ash right in my garden for a bigger yield each year. I wish I could send pics. On 2 plants I have over 20 tomato’s they are huge tomato’s too, no Cherries! So I’m a bit confused.
It’s possible the smoke is not getting to them and being taken away from the plants
We have had so much rain this year I've trimmed and pruned to try to keep it at bay

it's surprising how many people handle the stems of tomato seedlings, tony. for smokers this is a big problem. the nicotine on fingers is a major problem. unfortunately, i'm a smoker, but handling the seedling, like any other seedling by the leaf when pricking out helps.......................brian

Hi Tony and all. Will mulch my plants today, and trim away any lower leaves near the soil. I'm growing them in my sun room, which I otherwise don't use and I have blossom end rot on only one of my plants a beef tomatoe. The garden centre sold me calcified seaweed crystals to add to the soil. The water I use goes through a lime removal system does that have an impact?
The PH of your soil also affects the availability of nutrients to your plant.

I think one of my tomato plants has Grazon poison. My tomatoes are pointed and the leaves stay curled even after watering. Rutgers don’t grow round tomatoes that are pointed on the ends

Yes as long as the tomato doesnt show symptoms you can eat the fruit

I don't know what to do about my plants. They were doing excellent bit now are not looking great. It looks like blight but the fruit is also damaged. I was thinking it may be grasshoppers spreading a sickness. I have alot of grasshoppers.the fruit is splitting really bad at the vine. Am I watering to much? It's my first year and I'm still learning

Great vid Tony. I would grow tomato's, but I find they bring in the pests. So I don't grow them alongside my chillies anymore.
If you give them ventilation mate then the pests are rare, ive had no problem for the past 10 years, but chillies and tomatoes prefer slightly different conditions. Loved the wine video pal
Tomatoes and chillis are in the same plant family, they may share some pests
i also planted Hybrid roma tomatoes right next to the regular romas and they do not seem to be affected with the white spots.

I have just planted some Roma tomatoes. when i checked them this morning I noticed large white splotches on them. When i looked closer ihe white patches seem to be areas that the green chlorophyll has leached out. it is not a fungus that is fuzzy.
it could be powdery mildew, but also could just be sun bleeching without seeing it its hard to say
I was wondering if mulching either tomato’s and potatoes increased the presence of slugs and snails. Have you found a increase or decrease in slug damage .?
No debra, it could give them somewhere to hide, but when they are dry on surface the slugs dont like crawling on it. I have a load of brassicas out with mulch around and no issues
The blossoms on all my tomato plants (Brandywine, San Marzano, SuperSteak, Dr. Wyche’s, Big Beef, etc) are drying up and falling off. All the leaves look green and healthy. I’m in northern ca zone 10b. Is there a remedy for this or should I rip em all out and start over? I started everything in seeds. Thank you Tony and more power!
It needs a feed of potassium so give it a tomato feed. also you may want to spray it could be too hit for them
Simplify Gardening the temps here for the past few weeks have been 65-70 deg days and 50 nights. We did have hot, dry conditions in Feb & March with 45 deg nights and 70-85 deg dayswhen it was supposed to be still winter. Thanks again! I will give them K and hopefully I get fruit! Using garlic oil spray to all of your plants and get rid of all the pest.
Should I just pour baking soda into the soil or dilute into water. I live in Alabama and our heat index/"feel like" temps have been around 100-104 and also we have had A Lot of rain as well. I have 5 beef steak tomato plants- planted in 5 gallon buckets (every plant is affected) and they are dying/yellowing with brown spots from the bottom up. My fruit are beautiful green and about Small/medium size but don't seem to be getting bigger. Any help would be appreciated. The are no blemishes or spots on the fruit

Hi Tony. Many many thanks for this - so helpful. I notice you haven’t mentioned Bordeaux Mixture at all. I remember my mum using it in the greenhouses (she was a market gardener) and I can buy it here in France as Bouille Bordelaise. But I don’t know what it actually is or whether it is something horrid? It is used for a number of mildew related problems including blight. Just wondering, as well, while we’re on the subject of tomatoes, any ideas why my very healthy, strong looking plants have such pathetic trusses this year ? Thanks again. Steph from France

Hi... I'm new to ur channel 🙂 I've a question about this topic. Recently I came to know about growing tomato plant from the ripe tomato slice n I use that method almost 2 weeks ago n it works. The plants came out 1 or 2 inch in size but the problem is they look very week n not healthy n growth is not well I feel. I feel there some bacterial attacks in the plants or soil thats why they look unhealthy n not growing as well. Same things happens with my pumpkin plant. They r 3 to 4 inch in size but get yellowed and Their top parts r falling like someone plucked the new stem😣 I don’t no how to fix it. Pls suggest me solutions of these 2 problems 🙏 pls reply. its could be bacterium wilt. its not the best method to germinate seed as your introducing rotting flesh to the soil which harbours bacteria
Great video Tony. You look like a guy that knows his way around a plant pot. I’m looking for some advice, I’ve recently started growing some herbs in my attic. I’ve insulated everything to keep the warmth in and sorted out lighting and ventilation and all that but I’m struggling to get my plants to grow more than sort of 2 ft in height. Really looking for a good crop and just don’t think I’m nailing the fertiliser side of things. Any advice would be awesome.

I was close to having a great crop of tomatoes, then it rained everyday for about a month, they all died, out of 30 plants I might have got around 30 tomatoes, the cherries lasted the longest.
