I worked as safety staff years ago at a VA (veteran’s) psych ward. There was a patient, much older than the rest, who was a WWII vet. He was a sailor stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1941 and a survivor of the attack. He had terrible PTSD. Most of his PTSD revolved around the days after December 7th, however, when he was ordered to do guard duty by the battleships at night. The banging at night and the helplessness of not being able to help his fellow sailors tore him apart. Especially as the banging slowly became less and less and then stopped altogether.
He went on to live a fairly normal life, but as he began to mentally decline in his older years, the banging came back to torment him at night. Hearing him beg long-dead men to stop banging, sob as he profusely apologized for being helpless to do anything, and scream in torment was heartbreaking to experience and I spent many hours in the middle of the night sitting with him as he cried an ocean of tears and told me how they would not stop banging in the dark of his room.

What you wrote in this comment is exactly what I imagined as I watched this video, what I would feel if it were me hearing those bangs at night. I can’t even imagine how excruciating that must be, mentally and emotionally. That horrible feeling of helplessness and imagining what they must be going through, the feeling it of guilt and impotence.

As a United States Sailor, retired, you brought me to tears. There so many unimaginable stories like this. This was an incredibly well done documentary. Thank you for honoring these Sailors, these shipmates, and their families by telling this story. Powerful stuff.

Bless Fisk for recounting over and over what must’ve been some of the most horrifying days of his life to keep the memory of Clifford, Ronald, and Louis alive. I hope the dates on their tombstones can be changed, after the absolute horror they all endured, they deserve it.

Those men, effectively sacrificing themselves to save the rest of the men on board. Facing probably the most horrifying grizzly death imaginable definitely deserve the truth to come to bear and them getting post mortem a medal of valor of at least a silver star.

Issuing citations would devalue the honor of all the servicemen that did willingly sacrifice themselves for their fellow servicemen and their country. I am fairly certain that if they could speak, they would say that they do not want medals.
The only flaw in your channel is that you don't do enough videos : Your research, fact-checking, photos, narration, pace, voice and humour at times are just...wow! Please do more.

A distant relative, Clay Cooper Rector, storekeeper 3rd class, is still entombed in the USS Arizona. In this video, I recognized Richard Fisk as the volunteer who helped me find his data page in a large binder when I visited the Memorial in 1995. Bless them both. Tomorrow is Veteran's Day, 2023.

It's sad that they did not give the parents the explanation of their children's death. They bravely huddled together in that room for over two weeks for survival, awaiting help, having faith in their company that they would be rescued. At least the sailors kept the story alive. But as you say, it's a giant metal maze and they really had no chance to escape, they were just delaying the inevitable.
IMO it's better they weren't told and the reporter was a a-hole for telling the sister. I mean the absolute heartbreak and pit of your stomach sickness you'd feel anytime you saw there photo or thought of them knowing they died like that would be unbearable. More then a few parents have contemplated/completed ending there lives and had there whole lives just destroyed from that feeling when there children died in less horrible ways. I think to actually tell them the full truth may have killed them. Like actually killed them. It's good to share and know this full truth now the parents are gone and the knowledge isn't going to cause further death/harm but at the time nah. Terrible Idea.

@@scottwooledge6387 That’s not their choice to make. The military has actually done this sort of thing numerous times. I remember that famous NFL who joined the military and then was eventually reported slain in battle. lol The Army made him sound like he went out saving his guys. Reality? He was killed by friendly fire. I’m an Army veteran btw so I definitely support the military. However I don’t support them just flat out lying.
My grandma would cry anytime Pearl Harbor was brought up. She ended up losing a brother in WW2. Her Brother was in the Army; he bravely jumped on a grenade thrown into a group of his comrades to save them. And he was the only casualty of that grenade. His fellow comrades sent my grandma (very close) letters describing what happened, and how much her brother loved her, being so thankful for what her brother did, which I now have in my possession.

I have heard this story probably tens of times by now, but this video finally allowed me to fully understand and visualize everything.
This video was simply incredible. Not only did you tell their stories with correct facts but also with the respect they deserved. It's easy to get lost in true crime and dark media and forget that these were real peope. They lived real lives, had real dreams, and experienced real horrible deaths.
None of us can ever even begin to grasp the horror these three young men must have felt in their last moments. All we can do is hear their story, take a moment of silence, and remember their names.

I TOTALLY agree. I've seen so many different versions of this story and this doc is hands-down the quintessential telling and presentation of this story. The music, especially at the very end of the doc as the woman is sitting in front of the computer having a brew and is watching Fiske tell the story, is absolutely haunting. The Cello key played in that piece is just incredibly haunting. I play Cello and that is a C Minor key, so that makes it extremely haunting. So everything about this documentary is as good as it gets. The telling of the men's lives and what was going on the night before and that morning right before the attack began, the mention of the men's families and where exactly they were from, and their hopes and aspirations. Just as another commenter said; this documentary REALLY makes you realize that these were real people with real lives and their deaths were as bad as death can be. This one will affect me for quite some time. I will definitely watch it at least a couple more times. It made me weep and it will do that every time I watch it.

I believe the intent of the story teller makes all the difference. Plenty of large channels have told it but even the best of them Tell it simply to have content that emphasizes the utter horror with not much details. This channel on the other hand does illustrate the horror also but with much more reverence and thoughtful accounting of the actual people, respectively acknowledging those peoples families which I find is important, much more impactful, and Infinitely interesting. Thank you!

You said you'd do your best to tell their story right, and my god, you absolutely did. I frequently put on videos to listen to in the background, but this one I had to really give my full attention to. One of the biggest criticisms I have about this kind of content, despite loving the genre as a whole, is that it often feels like creators are exploiting the victims of the story for entertainment. But you've always shown a true interwst in bringing light and giving the forgotten a voice. This is a story that will stick with me for a long time. It is truly tragic, and while I can't imagine the magnitude of grief felt by those connected to them, I do hope that at the very least, their tombstones can be changed soon. Great video as usual, RH.

Im a grizzled old combat vet, not much phases me. But as I sit here polishing my motorcycle and listening to this story, i feel something that I haven't felt in longer than i can remember, tears running down my cheek. Thank you for a true and heart felt telling of these young men's last days

After repairs, this ship was used until 1947. The ship would get it's revenge against the Japanese in many battles including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. But deep in the ship, these two rooms were "safer" then the gunners up top. Imagine all the sailors stationed in those two rooms. Blissfully unaware they were working out of someone else's coffin. Listening to the ticks of the same clock that these 3 guys listened to.

So horrific. I feel terrible for those three young sailors. I’ve heard this story before. They said that the sailors that were working nearby started wearing earplugs because they couldn’t stand hearing the banging and knowing those guys were trapped. In the story I heard they were told to get back to work and just ignore it. I didn’t know that they were actually looking for them. That makes me feel a little better that they were trying to rescue them. What a horrible way to die. It would torture me to know my child died that way 😢😢😢.
I love the narrator’s voices. It’s so soothing even though she’s telling us a real horror story. Btw, I love the research you did on this story. I feel like you honor those three men by telling their story in order that we may never forget them.
This! They didn't abandon them! That's really why I made this. They tried so, so hard to get to them but they just couldn't trace the source of the noise. And it broke them when they found out what happened. Fiske says he dreamed about it for years. I dread to think if the parents had still been alive and picked up the phone to the reporter that day. Can you even imagine? Thank you for your support and I'm glad you enjoyed it - if, you know, enjoyed is the right word...

Why would you think that they weren't looking for them? Surely you didn't believe that garbage. The unfortunate part is, these young men were only 3 of thousands trapped. People worked around the clock for weeks, trying to save young men.
@@VAHOSS But these were the last of the trapped to die. They looked for them for a time but then someone made the call to give up, long before they actually died. It wasn't like they were doing everything until December 23rd. Likely after a few days, anyone who could be rescued had been, the rest had perished. With these 3 people the last, obviously.
No one understands making the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of preserving everything you hold dear better than the Americans and the French.

this is genuinely one of the most heartbreaking stories i've ever heard. these three men were my age, doing more for others than i've ever done and yet they still died in such a horrible way. i cannot imagine the pain their families went through, and i also can't imagine the guilt and trauma that fiske had to endure for the rest of his life. they were all so young, they had so much life left to live and so much left to give this world. i hope that they are resting in peace now, knowing that they will never be forgotten.
As far as deaths go, CO poisoning is actually apparently pleasant.
You kinda just get super tired, and fall asleep. In the grand scheme of things, the three boys definitely went out with relative ease, which is a nice sentiment considering the absolute anxiety and terror they must’ve experienced leading up to the final minutes.
you're talking about carbon monoxide. It was stated in the video that they died from carbon dioxide poisoning which is actually a painful way to go.
@@skyminnie6605 Here's a morbid fact; the human body can't tell when it's not breathing in oxygen, only when it's not breathing out Carbon Dioxide.

Patients with chronic obstructive lung (COPD) have chronic elevated CO2, this causes their urge to breathe to reverse and depend on dropping oxygen levels (giving this kind of patient supplemental oxygen will stop their breathing). In the case of the three sailors the ever increasing levels of CO2 in the localised atmosphere would have a similar effect on the mechanism of breathing as COPD. Causing hypercapnia, respiratory acidosis, and eventually a painful death.

I fully agree, and it’s the respectful and human approach that make these so compelling. I feel like I knew the three men, and nothing is ever done for sensationalism. Many of the videos in this genre can be really ghoulish and disrespectful at times, so I really appreciate the letter of professionalism in the storytelling.

That is a terrible way to go, and I can't imagine being above the surface and hearing the banging, knowing people were trapped and feeling helpless. Fiske was clearly haunted by it. I am glad he told the story over the years.

Be assured the spirit of those 3 sailors and others who gave their lives in similar circumstances have made their story come to light from the darkness of military secrecy. This story absolutely broke my heart. As an avid history lover this is something I had never even heard of, even in school. Hearing about how those three men had to be absolutely terrified, out of their wits scared, probably uneven to fully comprehend what was happening to them amidst the vivid hallucinations they would see in the dark brings tears to my eyes. Knowing that their follow soldiers knew they were down there, that they could eve hear them is something that I wouldn't even wish upon my worst enemy because it has to be the most heartbreaking thing to ever experience.
Thank you for telling this story, for telling all parts of it. To the horrors they endured, to the rescue efforts, Fisks loyalty to this being remembered and even the injustice the families faced regarding their death dates. Thank you

I notice every time you post the quality of your documentaries just gets better and better! I was stunned by the work of this video, all aspects of it were performed perfectly. The best part was knowing you did very in-depth research in the respect and peace of those three men. Your channel is criminally underrated, and deserves way more views each time you post. I have never seen such careful handiwork and effort on topics like these performed so well before! It is quite terrifying too, these videos are way more scary than any media-related book, TV show, movie, or videogame could ever do. Much respect for not only covering the true story of these three men, but also putting in quality effort and honesty while doing so. I very much hope one day the RUclips algorithm will pick up the quality of these videos and bring them to more light than ever.
Why isn't this on Netflix/HULU is my question. The way you narrated the most critical moments of the three young men locked up in that room shook me: the descriptions, the pauses, the honor you payed through every detail. Amazing.

Seeing the photo of the sunken ship 3 days after the attack gave me absolute chills. Knowing that those three men were still alive, trapped, and completely inaccessable to the divers is soul crushing.

My Papa survived the Pacific but for other reasons, had his records suppressed. The results of which have left unalterable genetic marks in his children, down to his great grandchildren. This was so well done that it made me tear up, and that's not easy. Thank you for your respect and decency.

Real Horror this story is not only tragic and horrifying but it has a horrifying realisation to it (If 3 sailors could survive for 2 weeks within a ship fully submerged under water then just think how many other people could've been trapped alive on board every shipwreck throughout history??)
Look up a man named Harrison Okene, his story has a much happier ending. When his story hit the news cycle I remember being completely horrified by the fact that there are worse things than death that could happen when a ship sinks. You can actually find the video of the moment he was found.

the time, effort, and passion put into these documentaries is evident. Unlike many content creators who lazily throw together a sorry excuse for a highschool project consisting of royalty free images for profit, your videos show the upmost respect to the victims and truly tell their story. Thank you for this. Between 1980 and 1984, my family was stationed on Hickam AFB in Honolulu. When you live in Hawaii, on Oahu especially, you live in the shadow of Pearl Harbor. You grow up being told the stories of the giant bullet-holes in the buildings, kept unfilled in the honor of what happened; the story of how the Japanese pilots oddly left the water tower standing, believing it to be a religious shrine; walking over the final resting places of all the sailors who lost their lives when the Arizona sank in 9 minutes. It's part if the culture now. My father had told me this story of the men trapped in the hulls, the knockings that continued until the 23rd (I think he said the 24th), but erroneously he had believed it to be from the Arizona. It was not until just now that I realized his recalling of events was skewed and he never knew it. It was the Virginia, though highly possible banging was coming from other ships, too. But I think this was the story he had told us kids and since I hold a very soft spot in my heart for all things Pearl Harbor (except the movie, that was bad) , it touched me quite deeply. It is, in fact, worse than I imagined. Your retelling was amazing and the correction of details is appreciated. Again, thank you! And well done!
My husband and I were also stationed in Hawaii from 1980 to 1984, but in the Navy. My father was a survivor from the USS Arizona. He visited the memorial while we were there but never told anyone at the memorial that he was a survivor.
I really love the story of multiple people's attempts to keep this story alive. The careful telling and retelling is like the relaying of a single torch in the dark. Hearing about your contact with David Haines made me feel really strongly. Thanks for what you do.
Fisk is another hero of this story. Absolutely horrifying 💔 sometimes bureaucracy is actively evil, and sometimes like here, it's disinterest is also evil. These men suffered an unimaginable fate. Thank you for honouring them 🙏💔
Every once in a while, I see a documentary that takes my breath away. It's been a while since that's happened. Until I watched this documentary.
I can't think of a better way to pay tribute to these heros, than to have their story told correctly in a video like this that will live on forever.

this is very late, but i have to mention that your documentary work is astounding. in an environment so oversaturated with poorly researched videos begging for clicks by exploiting horrific true stories, it is incredibly refreshing to see a well researched, quality video essay that gives these men and their families and friends the respect they deserve.
I believe the intent of the story teller makes all the difference. Plenty of large channels have told it but even the best of them Tell it simply to have content that emphasizes the utter horror with not much details. This channel on the other hand does illustrate the horror also but with much more reverence and thoughtful accounting of the actual people, respectively acknowledging those peoples families which I find is important, much more impactful, and Infinitely interesting. Now THIS is storytelling at its best, putting mostly all other popular storytellers to shame. Thank you! I pray that this message finds you well!

This was absolutely fantastic. I don’t have the vocabulary to adequately explain the admiration I have for your work, nor the profound sorrow I now have upon hearing the horror and reality of 3 innocent kids being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Very, very powerful stuff… and you did it with such compassion and sincerity.
I hope you don’t become a story producer for the money that these remarkable stories will eventually make you… nor do I hope you ever have a deadline imposed on your vision and work product. That said, please please make 10 videos and send them to Netflix and HBO. Your work, but more importantly, these stories NEED to be heard.

This was just utterly heartwrenching to watch all the way through, imagine being one of those men trapped in a darkness that swallows you whole and all you have is each other and you try again and again to make yourself heard so you have that chance at being rescued but it all fails, life is such a precious thing and yet even after these men had died waiting for the chance at being rescued the government didn’t recognize that for them and made no effort to inform the parents, imagine being one of their parents and not knowing where your sons body is and if he suffered at all. Anyways this video is masterfully done, I’m not much of an emotional person but the storytelling and the way I felt connected to these men made me almost boohoo sob, well done

I managed to keep it together all the way up until the rolling of the closing credits and the image of Fiske on the little TV screen was all I needed and I was sobbing down in my soul! Not because I'm so great at keeping my emotions in check but because I think I held my breath the entire production. Dear God they were just kids.

This story broke my heart when I first heard it. I can’t imagine the hopelessness the men must’ve felt when they realized no one will be coming for them.

At first I clicked expecting a generic RUclips documentary for me to kill time with, but hearing of the creator’s efforts to reach out to people involved, get relevant equipment, and ensure their story was straight pleasantly surprised me. So in depth....the amount of time you spend in each of your videos is phenomenal. It's something you see scarcely on youtube nowadays....sadly. I mean I understand, because YT isn't the best platform to put a lot of time and effort in videos anymore like years ago. But that makes it even more special that some still do! So I thank you for sticking around and showing off your talent for video editing and deep diving into the facts for these horror stories. I read before that you don't have much time to make these videos....but the many viewers here including me, really appreciate the effort.
