More About "Waltz for One":
During the space race of the 1960's, the Soviets and Americans were at each other's throats, vying for a foothold in galactic exploration. Simultaneous to the superpower's struggle, a wealthy eccentric by the name of Arthur Whitman set out to search for his own stellar glory. His self-financed voyage would see him try to break the record for the longest single-manned space mission, and remain in orbit for 1 week.
This is a story of one man's struggle against the forces of nature, and the more powerful forces that lay within his own psyche.
Originally released June 19th, 2012 to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the longest solo space flight in history. The record was set by Valery Bykovsky with a total flight time of 4 days and 23 hours.

Well, there goes 10 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.
Then why watch it,then?
@@Jerry-o3pMaybe because he hoped the ending would be good?
Exactly
Spoiler!!! You never get any of it back
Thats what she said........😎
The home depot junction box is so realistic...lmao😂
Are you certain Home Depot? How about Lowe's or Farm 🚜 and Home 🏡?
I liked all the loose wires, and the old circuit breaker.
And the exposed wires along with the PSU that looked like a rats nest. 😅
DUST was my childhood it’s very sad to see that it has become unliked over the years I haven’t watched. 😢😢 So many years of good short films. I remember my favorite one out of my many favorites being the one with the red robot and the Asian child.
There is still a gem now and then.
That beeping got annoying REAL fast.
Worst Dust video ever, for that precise reason :(
That's life being in outer space. I'd hate to see you as an astronaut.
Imagine having to travel ALL the way through the endless vast, and eternal traveling in outer space,and......and the space mechanics got it right, checked it through many times, and something like THIS happens! 😮😮😮.
You cannot afford to have a major malfunction in or around ANYWHERE (wherever THAT is) .....in outer space!!
@@Jerry-o3p Oh I'd be the worst astronaut EVER! :)
@@CriminallyCritical Annoying,for sure. I agree 👍.
I think it was meant to be in his head and that is why they made it annoying because astronauts can turn the warning alarms off if they want. I saw Apollo 13 so I'm an expert now. Haha.
Anyway, totally agree with you, no need to do it THAT much so that it took away from enjoying the film a little.
I'm 67 and when I was a little boy, I got to sit in one of these Mercury capsules. Let me tell you. They're hardly big enough to sit in, let alone fit the big brass ones these guys needed to have to ride in this thing.
Tango romeo oscar lima lima@@TONE11111
Wasn't that a Gemini capsule? Thought there was another astronaut in there
@@TONE11111

@@TONE11111Navy had a base on the moon for at least a decade before that. Phoney space program for the public.

10 min PSA in support of psych evals. This man was not even fit for McD's drive thru work.
Any person who could not "keep himself together" under unforseen conditions would not be allowed near the space craft.
Clearly the beeping/flashing light was actually one of the ancient ones, instantly crushing his mortal psyche down to the size of a cold, hungry toddler.
Unless he owned the company, as seemed the case here.
Poor astronaut is flying in a Boeing Starliner capsule.
Yikes.
😂😂😂😂
Mr. Kubrick is waltzing in his grave. 😆
😂😂😂😂😂👍
Electricians will recognize the enclosure and cover used for that annoying, beeping light.
They even left the wires exposed coming out of it
did you see all the long and loose wires in the otherwise empty switchbox?
@@skepticaloptimist1917bit scary thinking that's in a spacecraft , seen old cars with better wiring 😊
I’m not an electrician, I noticed lol
The name of final song is Blue Danube by Strauss.
Terrifyingly claustrophobic. Madness ensues. But don't ballpoint pens famously not work in space? Pencils it is!
So... no conclusion? Was the blinking light gaslighting of the astronaut by ground control? And what happens next? Will the capsule spin out of control until it burns up in the atmosphere? No conclusion.
The conclusion *is* the unresolved waltz. The story is sparse and mysterious to set up the final scene.
The capsule may re-enter the atmosphere and burn off the retro pack (i.e. Friendship 7) such that it could be survivable, but we don't know when re-entry will occur and it could be days, weeks, or months depending mainly on the lowest point in the orbit (we know he's in orbit because of the amount of time that passes).
In John Glenn's case, the lowest point in the orbit was 80 miles (150km) and this would cause rapid decay and natural re-entry within 2-5 days, but with no control over the landing site. Such a landing would likely lead to the death of the astronaut.
However, the clock in the capsule in this film shows days of time passing and no explanation for the repeating conversation with ground control. We don't know what orbit the craft is in, but we assume from the isolation implied in the film that the writers intend the craft to remain in orbit for a long time.
- The conclusion is exactly and only the stupid joke of him responding to the beep as if it is a metronome, and playing with the switches as if the switchboard is a musical instrument.
@@jazzcat5950 - Madness is implicit in him treating the switches as a musical instrument, so don't twerp-out about that non-added insight. And of course neither a madman nor a fool could survive, whereas the protagonist is plainly both. The audience does not have information to determine whether a sane, non-stupid protagonist could have recovered.
@@jazzcat5950 - Your abusing the terms “troll” and “word salad” is just more twerping. Your first comment claimed that prior comments had missed something. Your first attempted addition was not an addition at all. Your second attempted addition was too broad a claim; you are simply too thick to notice that no self-contradiction is entailed in saying that the astronaut's situation was not shown to be unsurvivable, but that he'd not survive because he's a jackass.
@@jazzcat5950 - And of course my comment was removed. Whoever removed my comment simply cheated. It noted that you were abusing the terms “troll” and “word salad”; that the point about madness was not an addition, and that you missed the difference between a situation being survivable and a situation being survived.
Ok, not all the productions of this channel can be excellent.
But this one has an alarming level of stupidity and carelessness.
I fully agree... the movie is long, so long. The actor don't seeems to look like a real astronaut, but a simple ice cream sale man...... Too bad as the main idea was good (alone lost in space) but the jingle of the waltz is too easy.....
Junk astro science in physics in outer space BEING in,well,IN outer space?
Where ELSE can any astronaut go, hearing that classical music??
I'd go mad in outer space REAL fast!!
Thanks for having CC enabled
Looks like NASA (in this story) needs to do a better syke evaluation for its astronauts. Losing it over a repeating beep is a low bar.
when the beep continues and Nasa doesn't answer back and then you loose contact, yeah, you suddenly feel alone in a place where nobody can help you and you can hardly move. I would have freaked out also.
@@markl8111 That's a classic song while having to listen to THAT.... while trying not to go batshit, losing your sanity, and going bonkers..... while BEING in outer space!
It'd be like,WHERE would any astronaut GO?
There's nowhere TO,,you know,to go TO!
IT'S OUTER SPACE?!!!!!
Trapped while inside a damn spaceship while listening and putting up with that crap.....
Ughhhhhhhh!!!!!,,😙🤡🤡😁💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Didn't you read the intro? It was a private mission.
And THEN they should start doing psych evals
It was all good but for the flashing light. That was a cheap electrical receptacle with open wires going to it.
In a multi million dollar capsule.
Implausible. But the back store was OK. I'm an old HAWK missile crewman. Stress is a killer.
Whitman then wakes up in his bed, reaches over and shuts off the alarm clock and grumbles about being late for work...

Whoa I sure as heck never expected an ending like that!?
Never get in tin can spinnin in outer space°
Fantastic, a stroke of genius, congrats!
Ground asks question "How are you feeling"
Astronaut answers "We lost contact"
Ground comes back with "Roger, orbit checklist"
Okay, no answer I guess.
Who wrote this?
I loved the glass pane hovering pen a la 2001 though.
Would have loved to see his reaction to the pen not writing.
I have misophonia and, although it would have been very annoying, if i knew it would end upon return i would deal with it. I am mainly annoyed by sounds people make. Also, there must have been a basic toolbox on board. He could cut the wires to the beeper or wreck the speaker. But an interesting concept on solo space travel.
Astronauts undergo a rigorous psychiatric evaluation before a mission. They are scientists or pilots in total control of their behavior specially in difficult situations. This guy is too nervous to be an astronaut.
Clearly the beeping/flashing light was actually one of the ancient ones, instantly crushing his mortal psyche down to the size of a cold, hungry toddler.
Whitman was not given a screwdriver
Laughable electrical equipment from the outlet box with light installed "just beyond reach"", to the breaker box with one breaker laying loose amongst a wad of point-to-point wiring, to the wall of toggle switches,
Mission was a psyop by ground control. None of the buttons nor switches were connected to anything, were remotely controlled and wanted to see how long before cosmonaut would snap in a mock scenario before steering the craft into an enemy nation satellite. Uses video to show media cosmonaut went "mad".
*_Yeah, this didn't work for me at all._* Too many implausible things going on. I'm not sure what year this is supposed to take place, but it couldn't be in the late 1950s or early 1960s as Whitman is obviously British. A privately funded Mercury capsule? Cheap electrical wiring and an outlet box they got at the local Home Depot? The "elapsed time" timer going *_backwards_* with no explanation? RCS Thrusters apparently controlled by switches instead of the joystick that was in the Mercury Capsule? CapCom in Bermuda... only ONE location? No wonder communication was spotty. And no resolution. What happens? Does he finally burn up and die on reentry?
MiG25s entered service in 1970, first prototype flew in '64. That (sub-orbital) GSh-6 helmet wasn't around before LMFAO
@@Emily-ou6lq Good catch... Yeah... that too.

Ha! Might make that beep my alarm tone... no, really, I am tempted!
Excellent ending!!!
Nice trip! Cheers!
How is he so psychologically unstable as an astronaut? He didn't even try to cut the cords to the beeper itself. Why would he go nuts after just a few minutes and start flipping every switch? Very unrealistic premise.
Sadly like so many of these, FANTASTIC setup let down by terrible ending. Better luck next time!
What a boring film. Truly the most boring, monotonous shortfilm I have ever wasted time to watch.🤦♀
your boring
Beautiful homage to Kubrick's 2001.
None of these other negative idiots seem to get that.
I thought so too. I think he did a great job for 10 minutes.
Thanks! But it was a just a dull bow to Mr.Kubrick...
I liked it!
Ive never ever read so many negative comments on this channel ... Ever 😮
The world is full of too much negativity. That's the problem.
I know there have been one , or two negative responses to this, but I found it very entertaining. The claustrophobia, and the continual, maddening beeping, are nicely conveyed. Well done to all involved. As to the ending I think it's clear he might not survive. That beeping would have me eating the pen in no time.
checklist, check
I started to feel like having a hammer there wouldn't have been the worst idea.
1. The lighting is wrong even the ten year old game ksp gets it better
2. The capsule is much more claustrophobic
3. No fucking astronaut reacts like that
A bad connection in the power supply ? Then a big switch & some wires dangling. Not exactly hi tech! And he didn't listen when he was told to wait so now he's in trouble ! Hmmmm neither comedy nor drama
Wires would be laced. Even in the earlier capsules.
Thank God I skipped through.
I wonder how many cosmonauts were sent to space and they never came back? How many before the first? How many were launched and they just kept going?
Im building a rocket. heading to Home Depot in the morning. Going to upgrade that circuit breaker and getting a plastic single gain box. Technology has come a long way.
As always, at the Mercy of a Bloody Fuse/Ckt Breaker....
How did this guy pass psych eval?
Clearly the beeping/flashing light was actually one of the ancient ones, instantly crushing his mortal psyche down to the size of a cold, hungry toddler.
Not Dust's best that's for sure .
Я так понимаю этот ролик, что астронавту придется смириться со своей участью он обречён остаться в этой капсуле навсегда и ему нужно достойно встретить смерть потому как он пролетел ту зону-орбиту планеты где ждала его капсулу гравитация.
1. expect a mediocre chamber play
2. get a below-average chamber play
3. get more and more bored because I just can't see where the short wants to go and start fast-forwarding
4. hear ‘The Blue Danube’ and almost have a seizure at the presumptuousness of the film maker
I an throwing a party in space guys! Can you help me planet?
strange ... nobody is asking for a sequel or a series of this 🤣🤣
Soooooo, did he get probed or what!?
no, but you did, lol
Haha. In his head probably. Just looks like he went nuts Kubrick style and made an exit out of orbit. 😵 5:28 in orbit. 9:08 and 9:48 progressively leaving orbit 😆 That's what I got out of it anyway.

It's full of, well definitely not stars.

Because when comms die when you flip a switch.. you obviously don't try flipping the switch back. That would be weird.. ffs..
