Great casting, excellent music , good locations, and of course the superb cinematography, editing and direction that Sam Peckinpah delivered to the screen.
Glaring at you the entire movie is the fact that Kristopherson was miscast as Billy the Kid. Bob Dylan should have been cast as the Kid. He has the mannerisms and hell he even looks like the real Billy. He mockingly wears the clothes like the Kid down to the hat. Kristopherson should have been cast as Pat Garrett instead of the much too old James Coburn.
@@markharrison2544 -I wouldn't say that. Kris was solid, & for a singer..he's pretty good. Dylan would have ruined it,he's too self conscious, and out of his element. Knockin' On Heaven's Door, should have been prominently displayed in the movie, and at least used for the ending credits, but was relegated to a meaningless snippet.
I remember seeing a butchered version in the theater in 1973; thank God for DVD so I can see a restored cut close to what Peckinpah intended. He and MGM head James Aubrey fought tooth and nail during and after the production and in the end the audience was the loser. Sadly this was Peckinpah's last western.
Peckinpah tried to get someone to go down to Mexico and hire an assassin to murder Aubrey! (When he refused, Peckinpah said "I thought you were my friend...")
@@Blaqjaqshellaq From what I understand, Sam probably could have gotten a lot of people in Hollywood to chip in on paying that assassin if he'd passed the hat.

OK I'm having a Mandela effect moment lol. I remember watching this movie as a teen in the early 1990's Thanks to Young guns it got me onto the Billy the kid story. But I could have sworn that there was a fast paced Rock song in the movie with a chorus that said Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid I even sing the chorus sometimes because it seemed so catchy. But now almost 30 years later I see the soundtrack and watch the movie and no such song exist lol was my mind playing tricks on me I could have sworn this song existed in this movie. well I guess another Mandela effect lol.
The 122 minute preview/Turner version unfortunately doesn't have the same opening title sequence, with the song I think you mean, but the 115 minute 2005 Special Edition has it in the same place as the 106 minute theatrical version.

Billy didn't kill 21 men for starters. At best he killed maybe 6 or 7 and it can't be proven that he was the one that fired the shot in at least 4 of those. That is just a start of the inaccuracy but it is a damn good movie.
The 106 minute theatrical version was still better than most westerns, before we saw the 122 minute preview version/Turner version, that was released on Z Channel in 1988. The 115 minute 2005 Special Edition includes the wife scene - which was only featured in the TV version before, the flash-forward to Garrett's death in 1909 ( really '08), and a few snippets that are missing from the preview version, but otherwise uses the inferior cuts of the theatrical version. I want to see 145 minute preview version that Martin Scorsese saw before MGM/UA executive James Aubrey deprived audiences of Sam Peckinpah's brilliance.
I think the Roger Davis of "Alias Smith & Jones' narration fame must of also done this trailer narration in this film. For a Complementary song see Marty Robbins late 1950s /early 1960s song 'Billy the Kid'....
Hi does anyone know where I can download full movie. Love this film I live in Singapore and unable get copy of film that play on DVD player due region problems.
The best version is the director cut that showed up in the 90's but as a paradox in the DVD case it's the disc number 1 (number 2 is the emasculated version of 73)
It’s off the Pat Garrett and Billy the kid record there’s loads of different versions of it on the album the tracks called Billy just gotta find your favourite version

I'm with you about Dylan as Billy. Does look like him . But Kris as Pat wouldn't of worked . Kris is around 5ft 9 and wouldn't of played the presents as a 6ft 3 or 4 pat Garrett.
Looks good except the real Billy didn’t look like a full grown man child.. bad pick using Kris.. they made Billy look like he’s 35 years old hahahahaha
while purists will argue that Kristofferson looked and acted too old for the part ; I overlook that simply because the interactions between Kristofferson and Coburn come off as truly genuine best friends on opposite sides of the track
Rest in peace kris kristofferson
Easily one of the best westerns of all time. The space in the dialoug is genius, so few words and so much said.
Best movie ever. The Kane and Able story and the Abraham and Isaac story in one.

He looked about 39.
Definitely had an all-star cast.
One of the great American movies, depending on what cut you see.
Would be a lot better without Bob Dylan in it. Man, he's so bad... I mean, Tommy Wiseau bad.
Which is the better version? 1988 Turner of Directors Cut
Chad Evans directors cut is better
Is the Warner 2-disc DVD special edition worth a watch?
RobbKong Riot-Activist if it includes the director's cut...its a must see.....
For me, the best Western all time. 🎬
it's a version of a song off the soundtrack called billy no. 4, bob dylan did the soundtrack, incredible music and an awesome film.
One of my favourite Westerns
James Coburn was awesome
Coburn's subtle performance of a man hired / ordered to hunt down and kill his only friend , is top shelf excellent !
Great movie!
Just a kid? Kris Kristofferson was 37 years old when this movie was filmed.
Just a 37 year old kid 😔

I liked this film.
It came out about the same time as another Billy the Kid western, DIRTY LITTLE BILLY, starring Michael J. Pollard.
That's a fantastic Film as well! It also covers a much underportrayed detail: guns jamming.
This is the most historically accurate film about the story of Billy the Kid.

He looked like a middle-aged man.

There is a bit of a scene here between Garrett and his wife that was cut from even the directors cut because the footage was apparently lost.
