When it comes to Disney’s Renaissance films, Hercules and Tarzan were the only ones I had the opportunity to see in theatres. Like a lot of the films from traditional Disney overall I didn’t really revisit them after that initial first viewing for the longest time and now I try to go back to them more. I do think it’s a bit all over the place. The tone loses its consistency in the climax, the contemporary self referential aspect was better utilised in Aladdin (Which is my favourite of Disney’s animated features), the animation has a mixed degree of quality and the story/core arcs are a basic pastiche of familiarity. But on the flip side what does work are the characters that are enhanced by the fun vocal performances; it’s high and lively energy and the memorable music. When I reviewed all of the Disney Animation films last year for the 100th Anniversary Hercules placed Number 17 in the final ranking.
Thanks for covering this Cap and Austin. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember liking Hercules and Iron Giant more than any Superman movie, and I liked both Hercules and Iron Giant more than Superman as a character.
This is one of those movies, where I recognize that shortcomings of the script, but the good parts and overall enjoyment value are big enough that I can put in on and have a good time with it. Although, admittedly, this was one of the Disney VHSes I had as a kid, so there are certain amount of nostalgia points. Also, Cap comparing Zeus to Triton was amusing to me, since they both had the same Finnish dub actor, Esa Saario. Although, Saario also voiced Mufasa, the ruler of Atlantis and King Hubert (one of the kings in Sleeping Beauty), so he was just kinda the go-to-guy for Disney kings at the time.
I don’t mind the damsel in distress trope depending on the context of the piece but I do find it obnoxious to fall into your old tropes that you’re making fun of in the same movie. Meg is fine as a character but she falls into just being a trophy for the hero in the end which makes her much lamer.
I think I’m in the minority. I can’t stand this movie. It’s watered down Greek mythology for people that would rather watch a superhero movie. I don’t think hardly anything works for me except for hades as a character. 1/5 stars. At least Hercules always makes for fun kingdom hearts levels lol
If only Cap had gone further down the greek mythology obsession instead of superheroes, this channel mightve been called Greekvolution.
Its basically Superman with Hercules as Superman and Hades Lex.

Fun fact young Hercules is voiced by Josh Keaton from this movie

I appreciate the visual flare this movie has but I can’t say I’m a fan of the film either specifically.
This is the second best superman film
