According to TailsTube, it has been stated that both Classic and Modern Sonic are essentially the same, it's just that Classic is Sonic's Young self in the past, and Modern is the one he grew up to be in the later games. Heck, the whole another dimension shtick must've been a mistranslation on the writer's part for the English version of Forces. Cause in the Japanese version, it's still stated that Classic Sonic is indeed from the Past.
