I just caught the itch to move out of the states and down to Puerto Escondido. With the lower cost of living, I think I can make it work financially and am now doing my homework. Thank you for sharing your experience.

You might consider a trial run also when you're at that point: try renting in Puerto for 6 months or so, see how you like things. Try a few things out for your budget.
Remember that the Mx govt only grants up to 180 days per tourist stay, so unless you pursue a temporary residency, you'd have to go back to the USA after a 6 months stay....and so a 6 months stay allows you to really get a feel for a place, it's people, its systems etc. Then you could go back home and get more affairs in order and return to Mx again and try the same are or somewhere new. There are a TON of snowbirds here in Puerto, both young and old. 😊 The itch definitely seems to be out there for people to catch!
It was our pleasure to share our experience and we did it to show people that it's possible on a little or a lot. We live comfortably but modestly but you can still go really budget (way cheaper than we do!) and you can go glam (thousands every month just on housing alone), it's really up to you. Prices are really on the rise here now in Puerto. Housing to buy as well as all rents.

@@PlanFree Thank you! I ran the numbers and they work, I can retire early with a budget of $1,300 a month and never run out. In San Francisco CA, that's just not possible. I've researched immigration laws, expat taxation, and already spent a lot of time in Mexico so it's looking likely. The apartment building where I live in San Francisco is selling, so it may actually be inevitable - since rents in all of CA are sky high (especially in surf zones) and I may lose my place. Also, I just landed a 100% remote job that will only add to my budget. I do have some affairs to wrap up, mostly involving getting rid of possessions.

That will help indeed. :) Head's up: Mexico will want proof, when you move, that your position is with a US company, so as not to tax you in Mexico! Perhaps this is one more thing to do a little more research on.
Gosh you are right, a budget of $1300/mo wouldn't get a person much in Canada either, certainly not western Canada. So, good for you for doing all that research. It would be pretty hard to not be able to do BETTER in Mexico with that budget than in Western Canada or USA! You should be fine in many places in Mexico. And, if you get to a sweet surfing spot like Puerto Escondido, or any others and you find that they are also over priced for things like rent, etc then there are numerous other locations up and down the coast that are less "discovered"....and even some lovely locations back into the hills (more local) that are good options.

Nice tans now that you've been there a while. Overall I agree with your assessment of costs. I estimate it would cost me 40-60% of what it costs to live in Northern BC. Depending on how luxuriously you want to live. I could probably chop it down to 25-30 if I was very frugal. I'm seriously looking at spending 6 months a year somewhere in Mexico because of the cost and climate. The first consideration being climate, winters in Canada are depressing.
Aweee gosh we get it @Mike Wallden....! We are from Alberta, so we got over 30 years of SUN during the winters but still.....the winters lasted for EVER! Right!?
...time for a change.
We started slow travelling over 11 years ago, when we were 35 and 37 yes old. This year in Mexico is just the latest installment in the life and winters of Plan Free! We recommend it!
Home to Canada for the beautiful summers/fall and then away to a new country for the winters to meet new people, taste new foods, experience new climates and cultures... we LOVE the life!

Yes your coats are pretty well bang on. We (especially me, Lori) like to keep it sort of as frugal as possible in the beginning because its SUPER easy to up the budget after that ....for specialty foods, nicer accommodations, all that kind of stuff. 😊

Great Video and so very informative! We have booked a month in Huatulco for March 2023, but really want to check our Puerto Escondido ….cheaper and looking at perhaps 6 months as well for 2024. That is our retirement goal , 6 months BC ( Vancouver island and 6 months somewhere Mexico , preferably in Oaxaco State). Soooo we did not venture that far south this time around. Your retirement is what we've been doing for the last 11 years and we HIGHLY recommend it! 6 months back home in Canada and 6 months exploring a new country some where. GO for it!
Funny enough, we will also be on Vancouver island this summer/fall....we do some house sitting for wonderful people there (close to Victoria). It's very nice for a couple of Alberta kids!

Retired Canadians here. We've been living in Puerto Aventuras (15 minutes south of Playa del Carmen) since 2013. We don't own property here and are free to move anywhere we choose, including other places in Mexico. We are Residente Permanente, so we can come and go as we please without dealing with immigration limits. Given that this place we live in is getting quite expensive, a change in local is in the works. I believe we'll head to Oaxaca for a few days because it's one of our favourite cities in Mexico, then hop a flight to Puerto Escondido. Thanks for this video, it has helped give us the motivation to base ourselves elsewhere in this wonderful country.

At this point we would either purchase (to "lock in" our costs) or keep travelling to find less expensive beach locations in Mexico also.
From our time in Puerto Escondido and from what we heard from people in the area, everyone said that even just in the last couple of years that rents have almost doubled! We have a feeling it's happening everywhere right now in Mexico. Participants beach communities.
Look further away from the beach and in the towns ....better proving there.

This was a great video, I'm retiring soon and was considering Puerto Escondido as a location. Very affordable and I could live such a good quality life compared to here in the US. Unfortunately my Social Security will not be that large for different reasons but I got to go with what I got

In Mexico, the food is usually more local and there's more fresh fruits and vegetables. Most people walk more and eat more healthy in Mexico, so expats enjoy a more healthy life style. The rich culture also has benefits given you'll be studying language more and experiencing a more challenging environments - people you meet can be from different backgrounds with new perspectives and experiences.

That's also interesting that you mentioned Queretaro. We had thought of living in Puerto for 3 months and then one other higher elevation area (Queretaro being an option) for 3 months.

We're from BC and are tired of the government overreach, inflation, and ridiculous non scientific based mandates. How long did it take to be comfortable speaking spanish? We are from Alberta, so we understand what you're talking about and we HEAR you on the political stuff!
So, at this moment in time we are just tourists. Contemplating all options, slowly.
The lovely thing about Mexico is that they are safe (mask wearing when in large crowds or in grocery stores, etc but quite relaxed everywhere else (beaches, on the street etc). We like that. Live a little!!
We've been poking around and learning Spanish for quite some time: Ayr is just starting to get a good assortment or words and several most used sentences and I (Lori) am able to communicate in almost any scenario, likely not WELL, but I can hold my own, joke a little bit and ask for what I need, am looking for etc. We recommend Duolingo (free App) and doing a lesson or 2 EVERY SINGLE DAY/NIGHT. I love the language though and am super interested to nail it down! (that'll probably take another.....15 years!! hahahaaa To sum it up, it took me a year or 2 to be comfy speaking Spanish a little bit.
We are glad you are curious about our situation! haha ...but our situation is pretty unique! We've been geographically FREE for over 11 years, since we were 35 and 37 years old. We full time in our RV when back in Alberta/BC and then we choose a new country to stay warm every winter. Feel free to check out or many other videos on places we've lived....it's a B I G wide world isn't it? We are still not sure where we will settle!

Nice experiencing your video. In Mexico, many rentals available are a bit lower standards. Maybe kitchens don't have cabinets or, as you mention, missing doors, etc. Often, luxury places are at a large premium. It's wise to rent economically AND fix up the rental to be a bit more luxurious. Also, in Mexico, it can be useful to SPEND MORE TIME OUTSIDE and live more native style. The scooters are nice, but drivers in Mexico can be scary. Historically, the drivers were treacherous, but today they are more careful - still, the roads are not always safe, so better to drive a car for better protection. I definitely do not want to see you scootering across Mex. City - stay near the beach!!!!
You're quite right! Ee would never take a scooter even a short distance down the highway, that's just not for us. We only used our scooter for scooting around town, it's wonderful for that. We would take a private driver, taxi or bus for longer journeys.
Yes rentals in Mx are getting up there is price. If you want the same kind of standard as in the USA or Canada that's for sure. You share a great tip for people: to rent something more modest to save quite a bit of money and make small improvements is needed for yourself. This is an especially good tip if you can rent longer term.

@@PlanFree Ha, ha!! One couple got a scooter in Acapulco and the roads are terrible there with potholes everywhere and infested with gangs forcing businesses to pay for protection, etc., so I told them they were totally nuts riding over the hills there esp. with their child with them. I think scooters are nice in the Philippines, but they can be dangerous many places, because wild drivers can make the roads unsafe and, often, roads in Mexico have no shoulders, etc., too. It's wise to be safe in far away place - play it safe esp. if children are involved.
@@dennishassler605 oh gosh yes if we had children it would be no scooters for us except for just around the town we lived in. A two or four door car all the way for us with children.
We are all for adventure but we have safe boundaries also!!
Crazy story.
Great informational video. We are of similar mindsets. We prefer a separate bedroom with a door. However, we are open to a studio apartment with the right vibe and location. I think your place looks very pleasant. We will be coming to Puerto in about 1.5 weeks and were able to score a one bedroom for our first month in Puerto at a reasonable (for us) price. We did pay a bit more than you, but plan to look for a more affordable place for our remaining months after we have been there for a while and can explore a bit.
Regarding transportation, we have been touring Mexico for 7 months now and have always walked, taxied, ubered, collectivo'd, or used public transportation to get around. However, I do like the idea of having a scooter in smaller places like Puerto. Do you need a particular driver's license to rent and drive a scooter there, or is your home country license all that is required?
Food: We prefer the smaller local places, especially for fruits, veggies, and meat (poultry primarily). However, we have found places like Chedraui are great for things that are harder to find. For example, walnuts are a staple of ours and they can be difficult to find. We have found large bags of Kirkland branded walnuts in Chedraui. Other things we have found there that are difficult to find are international seasoning and sauces for stir fry that we often make.
We cook quite a bit and require a kitchen with our accommodation. We eat out 5-6 meals a week usually. Although, this may change with all of the great fresh seafood places in Puerto. You two seem to maintain your weight very well even with all of that eating out. I assume it is because you are very physically active.
We will be leaving Oaxaca soon and are very excited to get to Puerto. Thanks again for the great info. Every little bit helps make the transition easier.

Smart to get your feet on the ground first and then for sure poke around! That's what we did this year also (we have a few vids on our apartment hunting here in Puerto.....interesting to say the least.)
For the transportation thing.....you say you've been "touring around Mexico" and it's a BIG place!! ...so, not sure about you guys....but for us, if we are ever moving places frequently or moving WITHIN a large country we either need to have our OWN vehicle or none at all and do the taxis, buses etc. The only time we get a scooter, small car or Jeep or something is when we plan to stay in a relatively small area for a while. And, we mostly always S L O W travel (stay somewhere a while, many many months) because then the cost for a vehicle of some type makes sense. So, basically we personally really only get our own transportation when we stay in an area a while (like in Aruba, we bought a car, in Panama we bought a car, in Honduras we bought a scooter, etc)
Where are you from? If it's Canada, the USA, the UK....places like that then your regular drivers license is sufficient.
Food: we eat similarly sounds like! Almost ANYthing if it doesn't eat us first! hahaaaa Finding some of those special, familiar products is really nice when long staying in a foreign country, isn't it!? We love that. We make a lot of rice bowls and Asian-type soups at home....MMMM! We also eat out quite a bit here....it's just so EASY darn it! And most of what we choose on a menu feed the 2 of us! One order of whatever it is!
Yep, we are active. We've been going to the gym for almost 30 years. 😳🤭 And, when we travel to foreign countries, one of the first things we look into is if there is a decent gym or not. Puerto has several options. On top of that, we bodysurf about 4-5 days per week and we LOVE having fun while burning those calories....we LOVE being in the waves!! That was our primary reason for choosing Puerto this winter away to be honest, some small surf in the winter months. :)

@@PlanFree Yes, we tend to move slow as well, usually staying 1-3 months in each place. It depends on how much we like the place. We almost always take the bus when moving from one city or town to the next. We really like the bus system in Mexico and would take it over flying any day. More comfortable, easier, and inexpensive. Although, I can't really say I'm looking forward to the 10 hour bus trip from Oaxaca to Puerto. We tend to focus on going places that are more walkable to avoid the need for a car. However, I would definitely consider a scooter in smaller places like Puerto. Looks like fun even if not necessary.
I'll definitely be body surfing when I get there. Maybe even take a surfing lesson or two. Dian is not as crazy about the ocean as I am. She is a bit afraid of deep water and waves, but I'm like a fish. Looking forward to the snorkeling as well.

And Puerto Escondido is still expensive compared to other coastal towns like Pochutla and Puerto Angel, in Puerto Angel you can buy fresh tuna for 90mxn a kilo (6 dollars canadian) or Barrilete ahumado (smoked mackerel) for 90 mxn per 2 kilos.

But to try to sum it up for you we use Airbnb, Facebook Marketplace, Facebook groups, word of mouth on the street, walking the streets in the areas we are considering, Google search, Booking.com, vrbo sometimes also.

So in our experience and in general you would want to look for cities and towns with less tourists. That's going to equal lower prices and lower cost of living.
Just to give you a couple of examples off the top of our head: Oaxaca City in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, La Paz in Baja California Sur, and places like San Cristobal De Las Casas in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
Now those 3 examples aren't the only three! They're just examples of places that will have less tourists or they are less known to tourists and they're generally and for the most part local regular Mexican people living and working there.
For your social security check amount that you listed you would have no problems living on that budget in places like what we mentioned above and that would include accommodation, internet, utilities and food.

@@PlanFree no I have never been to Mexico I don't think possibly many years ago I just went from San Diego over Tijuana and back but I do not remember specifically I'm 75 years old so that's been a long time. But thank you so much for taking time to answer my questions and I have definitely been looking at those cities thanks to you guys. Thank you for taking so much time to answer my questions. I am probably about 50% proficient in Spanish at this particular point because I have been living in the Dominican Republic for over 3 years off and on. Have an awesome day!

Yeah, the smaller local towns in Mexico have a wonderful historic feel and they are also (as we discussed earlier) more affordable, often a more tolerable climate, lower paced, lower key, and calm generally speaking!
We wish you many positive discoveries as you travel around that enormous country, searching!
So the Dominican Republic for the last 3 years on and off... that's very interesting. We wonder why you are choosing not to stay there?
@@PlanFree I just decided I wanted to look around a little bit more and Mexico was not at the top of my list but now after watching several videos it's at the top of my list. And also Nicaragua. I live very simple but I have a girlfriend in the Dominican Republic and she may come with me. I have a great life I have friends I have family I have good health. I am very blessed!
Nicaragua is also on our list, we understand. We (especially me, Lori!) REALLY understand the wanting to "look around".
It's a big beautiful world out there with much to discover, people to meet and foods to try! I am constantly curious.

How did you go about finding your apartment? I have been searching some Facebook groups but haven't had much luck yet
Hi @Noah Mad, Ironically, we ended up finding our apartment through Facebook market place for Puerto Escondido area, maybe an idea for you to try. Generally though, I would book a short stay from one of the online platforms (Airbnb, FB, VRBO etc.) and then once you arrive, try to find accommodations by way of inquiring with places that have signs posted, word of mouth, local classified ads (if you speak some Spanish), and from those efforts hopefully relocate into a better space. Depending on when you arrive and how long your stay is, you SHOULD notice an increase in rental availabilities in/around April. Hope it helps!

These are good questions and there is a local Facebook group called Puerto Escondido people that you may want to join. These questions are common on there and so if you use the search feature you can usually find some helpful answers. If not, simply make a post on there and people will usually help you with specific tips. Hope you enjoy your visit!

Yes, a helmet is not only recommended but required! Sweaty in the heat but so worth it. :) We saved so much money renting a scooter rather than a car. But, it also limited us in how far we travelled with it. Ying yang, as they say!

How much do you plan for ongoing rise of inflation?
Since ongoing rising inflation is a virtual certainty in our estimation it is at the forefront of our planning for the future. Our strategies include; looking for money making endeavors that earn in USD, hiring/paying out staff/team members in international currencies that the USD is favorable in comparison to; Rupees, Mexican Peso, Baht, Rupiah. Then living in countries that USD is also favorable in comparison to local currency. The chosen country should also have a lower projected annual rate of inflation compared to our home country. So in summary we try to use arbitrage in the form of currency and geography whenever we can. And you?
@@PlanFree From my side, I'm planning for retirement. I'm Canadian and will get a work pension (not indexed to inflation, but grows based on seniority and my last 5 years of income) and a government pension (indexed). Really what it comes down to is finding that balance between working longer and retiring while I can still enjoy it. Inflation is the horrible unknown in the equation. I'm not in healthy shape (working on it, age 53), but my family tends to live into 80s and 90s so I need to be prepared. It feels like there's no great solution to that question though.
Perhaps no certain stable answer, no, but hedging against the rising costs is a good basic plan of action. Choosing a country with a drastically lower cost of living is at the forefront of our minds.

This is puerto now... what a shame...
It was kind of a big surprise to us when we moved there last year for our winter away too @Leo King. We thought Puerto would be so quiet, inexpensive, laid back....
It was quite bustling, completely discovered (as are most places right now in the world). There's just so many people now able to get around. We met all the best ones in Puerto though! Except you!
