Ahh you forgot the most important part of Iowa's stadium! The children's hospital was recently built overlooking the field so that the kids inside can watch the game for free. And every game, at the end of the first quarter, the players and fans will all wave to the kids.
I was going to say the same thing, but I thought I would peruse comments first. It is a nice gesture with the crowd waving to the kids. It is a pretty tough venue for visitors, so Hayden Frye must have known that when he built the Hawkeyes into a perennial contender in the 1980s, after several years of irrelevance, and painted those locker rooms pink. Bo Schembechler used to hate those locker rooms, but had great respect for Frye. The fans are quite congenial in Iowa City, for the most part (have been to every B1G stadium but Rutgers, and over 55 of the 64 P5 stadiums for games).

In its day, the Illini stadium was classic design, but it is quite run down these days, and for a team that does not win much, they have the 2nd nastiest fans in the B1G. Champaign not near as nice a town as many of the premier college towns in America.

Maryland and Rutgers do not belong, and my idea is creating a P6, so that each major conference will have 12 teams (9 league games, so after 4 years you would play every team at least twice, and 7 of them 4x) - all geographically arranged. The new conference would be a recreated Big East - with WVU coming back from the Big 12, Rutgers from the B1G, Pitt, Syr and BC back from the ACC, and adding Cinci, Memphis, UCF, USF, Army, Navy, and Temple to make 12 eastern teams. A&M & Mizzou would leave the SEC and go back to the Big 12, along with Nebraska of the B1G, whose spot would be replaced by Notre Dame. Purdue would switch from West division to East to join IU. This way, you have 6 12-team conferences and no teams way out of their region.
@@jdhjimbo Big 8 + the state of Texas doesn't work. The two cultures clash and any alignment between them will not last very long. The real answer to have a conference for the Big 8 teams and add a couple like Colorado State or BYU if necessary and a conference for the Texas teams.

The current setup is the one that does not make sense - having WVU playing hundreds of miles from their campus, having the B1G stretch from NJ to Nebraska, and the SEC stretch from SC to TX. The leagues should not be above 12 teams in order to maintain rivalries and a balanced schedule.
Its neat how the University of Illinois Stadium is called Memorial Stadium, and the Chicago Bears stadium is called Soldier Field and the marquee on the stadium says its dedicated to the veterans of the USA Military. George Halas, the founder of the Bears, was an graduate of the University of Illinois and even gave the bears orange and blue colors because of that.
There are 200 total columns on each side of Memorial Stadium; 183 of them are dedicated to the Illinois alumni that died in WWI. The entrances are on the ramps leading down from the upper decks, and are a sight to behold.

They couldn't play pro football in the old version of the stadium. Even more ironic when Lovie Smith (Bears coach who made a superbowl run) then coached the Illini for a few years.
What you have to understand about Rutgers is that it is located in New Jersey. The smell which permeates everything in that part of the state inspires the stadium name. SHI* Stadium.

Spartan Stadium is fine (I have seen 4 games there), but Nick Saban left MSU for LSU after the 1999 season because Sparty's facilities were subpar, and he believed there was only room for one dominant power in the state, and UM already had carved out that role. They have replaced the trailers they used for post-game interviews, but the entire athletic campus is quite less than the facilities at Michigan. The crowd support is good in big games, but lots of empty seats when MSU is doing poorly or vs the lesser opponents. Now that D'antonio is gone, we will see how the fortunes go forward. He was the best coach since Duffy in the 1960s.
Did he have big teeth, or always smiling? After all, it is called "Haply Valley"!. As a UM alum, it isxmy favorite visitor's stadium to go to. Great passionate fans and a VERY tough place to win - particularly on those "White Out" night games. I did see UM win there once, but also 2 losses. It is only slightly smaller than the Big House, and very loud!
Look around Penn State. Most of their facilities are named after people that contributed either to the school or the community, not some big corporation that had a multi million-dollar check. Gotta respect that.
Fun fact about two Big 10 schools. Iowa's stadium and campus were used for exterior shots for the TV sitcom "Coach" and footage from Minnesota Gophers football games was used for the football action.
I LOVED that show and never knew that about Iowa's stadium, I recognized the Golden Gophers footage though that they tried to pass off as Minnesota State Screaming Eagles footage :) Every so often my wife tries to find me reruns of that show but haven't found them yet.
The Big 10 hasn't had ten teams since 1990 when Penn State joined. They didn't change the name just in case they wanted to do it again, which they did when Nebraska joined in '11, and Rutgers and Maryland in '14. Only ONE team has ever left the Big Ten, The University of Chicago, which dropped football in 1939, and then left the conference in 1946 which was replaced by Michigan State in 1950. Former names. They were forced out because Yost didn't like the new rules that were put in place over the few years before they were forced out.The Western Conference (now Big Ten) wanted to cut the number of games. They figured that it was wrong and possibly discriminatory for teams to have their meals together, so they didn't allow teams to sit together for meals(crazy). They also eliminated players playing for more than 3 years, required that players not play as freshman, and that players that had played college ball elsewhere couldn't play in the conference. So, if a player played at another school they couldn't play. They only wanted undergraduates playing. I'm sure there were players that played at 2 year schools who wanted to finish in the Western conference. The conference also wanted to band "professional" coaches. I think this meant coaches that played at other schools but then wanted to go another school. Being that Pro football, as we know it today, was just a bunch of amateur teams forming loose affiliations with other teams. Being so temporary, coaches were plentiful. It seemed silly to ban them. l Yost refused to do any of these, so they were pushed out.
Purdue President Smart was founder/organizer. Ironically, Purdue unique in it takes no student, university or tax dollars to fund its athletics, which must pay the school each year. It also has fewest # of sports in BIG, in part due to $$, but also as it remains male dominated school with fewer women’s sports teams. They just announced pretty nice plans for another stadium renovation, though the beer garden will be gone
Chicago left because they dropped football due to the school prioritizing the football stadium for the Manhattan Project and later left the conference due to not prioritizing athletics as much, but by and large still retain some level of cordial support with the conference, and are currently part of a "superconference" of elite institutions of knowledge in Division III. Of course, this video is now outdated as, as of this post, the Big Ten is expanding to 16 universities with University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Good points about Ross Ade, also the grass that Purdue developed some years ago became the envy of many and reproduced in other stadiums. Many great Autumn memories there!
Ross Ade actually looks quite different today than it does in this video. There is a large video screen on the north end zone, permanent lighting and a massive new screen on the south end zone. There is also plans to fill in the south end zone into a more permanent setup as well. For now during game days it’s a patio with drinks and stuff.
After the game a group of App State students went to their stadium, tore down a goalpost, carried it across campus and dropped it on the Chancellor's lawn.

The Iowa Hawkeyes stadium has a children’s hospital located nearby that overlooks the stadium, and there is a tradition during the game that everyone in attendance waves at the children in the hospital. It’s actually very sweet
About the last stadium, the Minnesota Vikings had to play two seasons there while they waited for their present home to be built. Also, it's a lot better for the Gophers than where they used to play. The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome was located in downtown Minneapolis, and it was home to the Gophers, Vikings, and the MLB Twins. Despite it having a white roof supported by air pressure, the atmosphere was just awful in there. I remember attending a few Twins games there, and it was just alright in there. Nothing too special.
I am so glad the Gophers moved. I have yet to see the new stadium, but my games at Humpty Dumpty Dome were awful. Saw a Vikings preseason game vs the Saints in its first season (1982), a few Twins games, and my Wolverines crushing the Gophers. Was the worst for all 3! The old Memorial Stadium had a classic design, but was replaced by a tennis venue. In the early days of the B1G, Minnesota was a powerhouse, but have largely been irrelevant since the early 1960s - though PJ Fleck has them on the right track. I do recall 1977, when the Gophers handed Michigan their only loss there, 16-6. The Little Brown Jug has been pretty much OWNED by Michigan ever since 1968 onward - though the realignment does not allow the game to be played every season.

@@pbcoop62 I saw the old stadium in 1976, but it was summer, so did not see a game there, but I liked its brick exterior and Roman amphitheater look. What is your channel, where you have that video posted? I like the Minnesota campus, and being relatively close to downtown Mpls (as UW is to Seattle) is a plus. I just hate what the crappy "leadership" has allowed to happen to such a nice city. It was one of my regional cities for corporate housing, and always liked the warm weather visits (was -37 one January visit!), and running/biking around the Chain O' Lakes, boating on Minnetonka, the Holiday Light Parade along Nicollet Mall - viewed from the bridge from Dayton's - productions at the Guthrie, and many great restaurants - of which, Kincaids was one of my favorites! Also loved the architecture in St Paul - especially along Summit Ave, the boulevard by St Thomas College. The light rail now is a nice addition to the Twin Cities, which I saw in 2015. The residents cannot let the loons destroy it!

Fleck can return them to greatness! 2019 was a step in the right direction, but 2020 kinda took a step backwards - though was a wacky season for all in the B1G and Pac 12, since the 2 conferences chose to play the Covid Cult charade - for absolutely NO reason! The name of the Rutgers Stadium, Shi Stadium, makes me think of the famed catch phrase of actor Isaiah Whitlock Jr and whenever he always fits in that long dragging “ShiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiT” into all of his various characters from his film projects from such as The Wire and 25th hour.

Nice review of the 14 stadia in the conference. I am an OSU graduate and I have seen games in 8 of them (plus the old shitty dome that Minnesota used to use) and been to one other during the off season. Every place I have been to has been fun to explore, even if some of the quirks aren't ideal - like spending all of halftime in line for the restroom at Kinnick, or feeling the bleachers at Beaver (aka Erector Set Stadium) sway just from people walking to their seats pre game, or the very inefficient traffic in and out of IU's Memorial. But that's part of the charm of each stadium. I also try to check out the basketball arena whenever I go to an away game because it's much more difficult to get to basketball games in other arenas. While those capacities are MUCH less, they are also fun and interesting places to check out as well.
Waving to the kids(and staff) is a class move. Imagining the trials and challenges within; young ones fighting for their lives and highly- committed medical people trying to help them. Great things happen there....but nuff said; Go Hawks😉
We were there to visit about four years ago when a member of my kid's basketball team had surgery to untangle an intestine. He made a quick full recovery but you didn't have to look hard to see other families who weren't so fortunate. People who commuted back and forth from their jobs, slept on cots or in recliners (if they slept at all) but mostly had that look in their eyes that was exhausted, scared, and frustrated all at the same time. I never forgot those looks. And I pray that no parents would have to go through that nightmare. And I salute the Iowa Hospital and athletic department for working to make that twelfth floor overlook happen.

My Dad and I were recently on a trip from Pittsburgh (approximately) up to Oshkosh Wisconsin for the annual air show. We left around noon and when we were ready to stop for the night, we just happened to find ourselves near Lafayette, Indiana. I legit made us take a 15 minute detour just so we could drive past Ross-Ade Stadium as I'd only ever seen Beaver Stadium and The Shoe up to that point. It's a nice little stadium (from the outside at least) on the same trip, I also got to drive right past Guaranteed Rate Field and see American Family Field from a distance. I hope to one day be able to watch a game in some of these amazing venues.
The section of Ryan field (formerly known as Dyche Stadium) that doesn't face the center of the field like the rest of the stadium is because of the running track that used to go around the football field. We call those the Bogus Seats.
@@JonMillerCO No the opposing fans are on west side at the north 10 yard line almost directly opposite. Those weird seats are blocked off for most games.
One cool thing missed about the Iowa's Kinnick Stadium is the wave to the children's hospital that is next door. The top floor has a "press box" where kids there can watch the game and often tape signs and posters in the windows for game day. Something I learned while spelunking the tubes of the interwebs.
I can’t imagine anything worse than being a kid with a terminal illness and being forced to watch Iowa football. It’s literally adding insult to injury.
@@gumbyshrimp2606 Actually, ever since Hayden Frye arrived in 1980 or so, Iowa has been pretty good - especially at home. When I went to Michigan, they were horrible. I remember a 63-7 game. Now, nobody takes a trip to Kinnick lightly. They put a whooping on OSU a few years back, and ruined Michigan's playoff chances in 2016 with an ugly 13-12 win.
Back when everyone was converting to artificial turf, Ross-Ade Stadium was the only Big Ten stadium that bucked the trend and stuck with natural grass. I'm talking about the ten "original" Big Ten schools.

One of the signature parts of Badger football. Good stadium to see a game, and the old basketball fieldhous attached has a lot of character, and fans can even use the restrooms there as well. Madison is a very scenic town! Enjoyed the 3 games I saw there - 2 Michigan wins, and 1 loss in 2005.
Nebraska's stadium is really cool when you go in. They built the addition over the old stadium and you see the old stadium walls inside. Then go it through there to the seats. I don't know about any of the other stadiums as I have only been to Lincoln. I just like the way the old stadium is still there and intact to see.
Have to give props to Indiana. I'm a Buckeye and went to a game there in 1978 and thought the stadium was a high school like embarrassment compared to the 'Shoe. The upgrades at IU, along with the improvement on the field will make the Hoosiers a force to be reckoned with (actually, the seem to give Ohio State a tough time every year anyway.)

Been to quite a few games at Michigan Stadium. I love that they draw in over 100,000 people to each game. I went to one last month. They 109,709 people there.
Camp Randall Stadium is not only the oldest in the Big Ten but one of the oldest in the nation (at 10th oldest I believe). The stadium has received numerous renovations throughout the years, the upper deck being built in 1966. The field house is actually still in use, as the women's volleyball team plays there. Little known fact: the east side of the stadium actually housed dorms briefly in the 1950's. However they were quickly shut down as the space wasn't exactly great for living.
TCF Bank stadium (now Huntington Bank) is gorgeous. The press box is by far the nicest, and the rest of their football practice facilities are brand new as well. You can see the whole skyline from the student section as well. Just bring a coat!
For TCF (now Huntington) Bank Stadium, I think you're implying that the additional seating bring capacity up to 80,000 if needed would be added at the West end to close the horseshoe. It's actually built to add a third deck from the press box all the way around the existing stands and would leave the West end open. You can see that the roof, especially on the East wide is particularly wide to accommodate such an addition.
TCF Bank Stadium used to host pro football too, the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL played there for a few years while the HHH Metrodome was being torn down and replaced with US Bank Stadium.
The fact that this conference is home to stadiums all with over 50000 (other than the 47000 northwestern stadium) and it’s home to the 3 largest football stadiums in America tells you that the big ten is a super conference
Ryan Field is a dump. Many of the bleacher seats are rusted over, the interior is cramped, most of it hasn't been renovated or even power washed in decades, and there is basically no signage anywhere telling you where things are located or in what direction to look. All that being said, I love watching games there.
I remember when Ryan was under renovation they couldn't use one end zone and both teams had to play in the same direction. It might be the worst stadium in the Power 5.
LOL, I bet. He never could win the rivalry games wherever he coached. Beating UM in the Rose Bowl helped him get the job, then he on managed it twice his in over a decade...still better than Hairball, though.
It is my understanding that visiting teams to Iowa will go to great pains to cover the pink with black plastic. Inconveniences like that, in my opinion, do little more than light a fire within the visiting team. Like Michael Jordan: They had painted the visitors locker room pink, and I took that personally.
Penn state is the oldest stadium in the big ten- Beaver Field dates to 1909- it was on the other side of camps dismantled and put back together as beaver stadium. the lower 20 rows or so are original to beaver field thus making it the oldest big ten stadium AND the oldest stadium in FBS Football.
My former co worker (since passed away) remembered Beaver Field. I think it was by Rec Hall. I think he said tickets were around $8 to $10. The team's actual first "stadium" was the lawn of Old Main and had a capacity of zero.
That Purdue stadium is an old picture that part behind the tiny south end zone seats is now an area where there’s tables and only season ticket holders can go in that area right now they just finished a massive jumbo tron I heard it’s one of the biggest jumbo Trons in either the US or The World
Fun fact: Maryland Stadium used to be known as Byrd Stadium,named after former school president Harold Byrd ,but had gotten renamed due to Byrd being a proponent of Segregation and removed his name from the Stadium, and elsewhere on campus. Due to selling the Naming rights it's now known as SECU Stadium, SECU being short for State Employees Credit Union.
I went to a game at Ryan Field about 16 years ago. We sat in that section you pointed out where they should have just continued the curve. I agree they should have, because if you look at the position of their Jumbotron you can’t even see it from those seats. It was not really the best stadium

Spartan Stadium is fine (I have seen 4 games there), but Nick Saban left MSU for LSU after the 1999 season because Sparty's facilities were subpar, and he believed there was only room for one dominant power in the state, and UM already had carved out that role. They have replaced the trailers they used for post-game interviews, but the entire athletic campus is quite less than the facilities at Michigan. The crowd support is good in big games, but lots of empty seats when MSU is doing poorly or vs the lesser opponents. Now that D'antonio is gone, we will see how the fortunes go forward. He was the best coach since Duffy in the 1960s.

Did he have big teeth, or always smiling? After all, it is called "Haply Valley"!. As a UM alum, it isxmy favorite visitor's stadium to go to. Great passionate fans and a VERY tough place to win - particularly on those "White Out" night games. I did see UM win there once, but also 2 losses. It is only slightly smaller than the Big House, and very loud!
Look around Penn State. Most of their facilities are named after people that contributed either to the school or the community, not some big corporation that had a multi million-dollar check. Gotta respect that.
Fun fact about two Big 10 schools. Iowa's stadium and campus were used for exterior shots for the TV sitcom "Coach" and footage from Minnesota Gophers football games was used for the football action.
I LOVED that show and never knew that about Iowa's stadium, I recognized the Golden Gophers footage though that they tried to pass off as Minnesota State Screaming Eagles footage :) Every so often my wife tries to find me reruns of that show but haven't found them yet.
As a Michigan fan, I will say that Living In Illinois ,Illinois' Memorial Stadium is possibly the nicest building I've stepped in
The Big 10 hasn't had ten teams since 1990 when Penn State joined. They didn't change the name just in case they wanted to do it again, which they did when Nebraska joined in '11, and Rutgers and Maryland in '14. Only ONE team has ever left the Big Ten, The University of Chicago, which dropped football in 1939, and then left the conference in 1946 which was replaced by Michigan State in 1950.

Michigan wasn't a member for over a decade. They left in 1906, not 16. They were forced out because Yost didn't like the new rules that were put in place over the few years before they were forced out.The Western Conference (now Big Ten) wanted to cut the number of games. They figured that it was wrong and possibly discriminatory for teams to have their meals together, so they didn't allow teams to sit together for meals(crazy). They also eliminated players playing for more than 3 years, required that players not play as freshman, and that players that had played college ball elsewhere couldn't play in the conference. So, if a player played at another school they couldn't play. They only wanted undergraduates playing. I'm sure there were players that played at 2 year schools who wanted to finish in the Western conference. The conference also wanted to band "professional" coaches. I think this meant coaches that played at other schools but then wanted to go another school. Being that Pro football, as we know it today, was just a bunch of amateur teams forming loose affiliations with other teams. Being so temporary, coaches were plentiful. It seemed silly to ban them.

Purdue President Smart was founder/organizer. Ironically, Purdue unique in it takes no student, university or tax dollars to fund its athletics, which must pay the school each year. It also has fewest # of sports in BIG, in part due to $$, but also as it remains male dominated school with fewer women’s sports teams. They just announced pretty nice plans for another stadium renovation, though the beer garden will be gone
Chicago left because they dropped football due to the school prioritizing the football stadium for the Manhattan Project and later left the conference due to not prioritizing athletics as much, but by and large still retain some level of cordial support with the conference, and are currently part of a "superconference" of elite institutions of knowledge in Division III.
Of course, this video is now outdated as, as of this post, the Big Ten is expanding to 16 universities with University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Michigan State was able to join the Big Ten thanks to its rivalry with Notre Dame.

Ross Ade actually looks quite different today than it does in this video. There is a large video screen on the north end zone, permanent lighting and a massive new screen on the south end zone. There is also plans to fill in the south end zone into a more permanent setup as well.
For now during game days it’s a patio with drinks and stuff.

The Iowa Hawkeyes stadium has a children’s hospital located nearby that overlooks the stadium, and there is a tradition during the game that everyone in attendance waves at the children in the hospital. It’s actually very sweet

About the last stadium, the Minnesota Vikings had to play two seasons there while they waited for their present home to be built. Also, it's a lot better for the Gophers than where they used to play. The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome was located in downtown Minneapolis, and it was home to the Gophers, Vikings, and the MLB Twins. Despite it having a white roof supported by air pressure, the atmosphere was just awful in there. I remember attending a few Twins games there, and it was just alright in there. Nothing too special.
I am so glad the Gophers moved. I have yet to see the new stadium, but my games at Humpty Dumpty Dome were awful. Saw a Vikings preseason game vs the Saints in its first season (1982), a few Twins games, and my Wolverines crushing the Gophers. Was the worst for all 3! The old Memorial Stadium had a classic design, but was replaced by a tennis venue. In the early days of the B1G, Minnesota was a powerhouse, but have largely been irrelevant since the early 1960s - though PJ Fleck has them on the right track. I do recall 1977, when the Gophers handed Michigan their only loss there, 16-6. The Little Brown Jug has been pretty much OWNED by Michigan ever since 1968 onward - though the realignment does not allow the game to be played every season.
I've never been to the new stadium, but I've seen Gopher games at both Memorial Stadium, and the Metrodome. If you want to see some pictures of what Memorial Stadium looked like in 1979, I have a video on my channel of pictures from the Ohio State game.

What is your channel, where you have that video posted? I like the Minnesota campus, and being relatively close to downtown Mpls (as UW is to Seattle) is a plus. I just hate what the crappy "leadership" has allowed to happen to such a nice city. It was one of my regional cities for corporate housing, and always liked the warm weather visits (was -37 one January visit!), and running/biking around the Chain O' Lakes, boating on Minnetonka, the Holiday Light Parade along Nicollet Mall - viewed from the bridge from Dayton's - productions at the Guthrie, and many great restaurants - of which, Kincaids was one of my favorites! Also loved the architecture in St Paul - especially along Summit Ave, the boulevard by St Thomas College. The light rail now is a nice addition to the Twin Cities, which I saw in 2015. The residents cannot let the loons destroy it!

The name of the Rutgers Stadium, Shi Stadium, makes me think of the famed catch phrase of actor Isaiah Whitlock Jr and whenever he always fits in that long dragging “ShiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiT” into all of his various characters from his film projects from such as The Wire and 25th hour.

Nice review of the 14 stadia in the conference. I am an OSU graduate and I have seen games in 8 of them (plus the old shitty dome that Minnesota used to use) and been to one other during the off season. Every place I have been to has been fun to explore, even if some of the quirks aren't ideal - like spending all of halftime in line for the restroom at Kinnick, or feeling the bleachers at Beaver (aka Erector Set Stadium) sway just from people walking to their seats pre game, or the very inefficient traffic in and out of IU's Memorial. But that's part of the charm of each stadium. I also try to check out the basketball arena whenever I go to an away game because it's much more difficult to get to basketball games in other arenas. While those capacities are MUCH less, they are also fun and interesting places to check out as well.

Waving to the kids(and staff) is a class move. Imagining the trials and challenges within; young ones fighting for their lives and highly- committed medical people trying to help them. Great things happen there....but nuff said; Go Hawks😉
We were there to visit about four years ago when a member of my kid's basketball team had surgery to untangle an intestine. He made a quick full recovery but you didn't have to look hard to see other families who weren't so fortunate. People who commuted back and forth from their jobs, slept on cots or in recliners (if they slept at all) but mostly had that look in their eyes that was exhausted, scared, and frustrated all at the same time.
I never forgot those looks. And I pray that no parents would have to go through that nightmare. And I salute the Iowa Hospital and athletic department for working to make that twelfth floor overlook happen.

My Dad and I were recently on a trip from Pittsburgh (approximately) up to Oshkosh Wisconsin for the annual air show. We left around noon and when we were ready to stop for the night, we just happened to find ourselves near Lafayette, Indiana. I legit made us take a 15 minute detour just so we could drive past Ross-Ade Stadium as I'd only ever seen Beaver Stadium and The Shoe up to that point. It's a nice little stadium (from the outside at least) on the same trip, I also got to drive right past Guaranteed Rate Field and see American Family Field from a distance. I hope to one day be able to watch a game in some of these amazing venues.

The section of Ryan field (formerly known as Dyche Stadium) that doesn't face the center of the field like the rest of the stadium is because of the running track that used to go around the football field. We call those the Bogus Seats.
Is that where they stick the opposing teams families and fans? Would be a good spot to do so.
@@JonMillerCO No the opposing fans are on west side at the north 10 yard line almost directly opposite. Those weird seats are blocked off for most games.
One cool thing missed about the Iowa's Kinnick Stadium is the wave to the children's hospital that is next door. The top floor has a "press box" where kids there can watch the game and often tape signs and posters in the windows for game day. Something I learned while spelunking the tubes of the interwebs.
I can’t imagine anything worse than being a kid with a terminal illness and being forced to watch Iowa football. It’s literally adding insult to injury.

@@gumbyshrimp2606 Actually, ever since Hayden Frye arrived in 1980 or so, Iowa has been pretty good - especially at home. When I went to Michigan, they were horrible. I remember a 63-7 game. Now, nobody takes a trip to Kinnick lightly. They put a whooping on OSU a few years back, and ruined Michigan's playoff chances in 2016 with an ugly 13-12 win.

Back when everyone was converting to artificial turf, Ross-Ade Stadium was the only Big Ten stadium that bucked the trend and stuck with natural grass. I'm talking about the ten "original" Big Ten schools.
If I recall correctly, Purdue has used Prescription Athletic Turf ever since they invented it!

The field house of Camp Randall Stadium is the Wisconsin Fieldhouse, the old gym of the basketball team (replaced in 1998)
The Fieldhouse is still the home of the womens volleyball team.

One of the signature parts of Badger football. Good stadium to see a game, and the old basketball fieldhous attached has a lot of character, and fans can even use the restrooms there as well. Madison is a very scenic town! Enjoyed the 3 games I saw there - 2 Michigan wins, and 1 loss in 2005.

Nebraska's stadium is really cool when you go in. They built the addition over the old stadium and you see the old stadium walls inside. Then go it through there to the seats. I don't know about any of the other stadiums as I have only been to Lincoln. I just like the way the old stadium is still there and intact to see.
Have to give props to Indiana. I'm a Buckeye and went to a game there in 1978 and thought the stadium was a high school like embarrassment compared to the 'Shoe. The upgrades at IU, along with the improvement on the field will make the Hoosiers a force to be reckoned with (actually, the seem to give Ohio State a tough time every year anyway.)

Camp Randall Stadium is not only the oldest in the Big Ten but one of the oldest in the nation (at 10th oldest I believe). The stadium has received numerous renovations throughout the years, the upper deck being built in 1966. The field house is actually still in use, as the women's volleyball team plays there.
Little known fact: the east side of the stadium actually housed dorms briefly in the 1950's. However they were quickly shut down as the space wasn't exactly great for living.
TCF Bank stadium (now Huntington Bank) is gorgeous. The press box is by far the nicest, and the rest of their football practice facilities are brand new as well. You can see the whole skyline from the student section as well. Just bring a coat!
The atmosphere in Beaver Stadium is insane on gameday. Even though I'm biased, I think it is the best stadium in college football.

For TCF (now Huntington) Bank Stadium, I think you're implying that the additional seating bring capacity up to 80,000 if needed would be added at the West end to close the horseshoe. It's actually built to add a third deck from the press box all the way around the existing stands and would leave the West end open. You can see that the roof, especially on the East wide is particularly wide to accommodate such an addition.
TCF Bank Stadium used to host pro football too, the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL played there for a few years while the HHH Metrodome was being torn down and replaced with US Bank Stadium.
Fun fact until the permanent south stand was put into Ohio Stadium they built temporary seating out of scaffolding for home football games.

Ryan Field is a dump. Many of the bleacher seats are rusted over, the interior is cramped, most of it hasn't been renovated or even power washed in decades, and there is basically no signage anywhere telling you where things are located or in what direction to look.
All that being said, I love watching games there.
It always looks cool on tv.
I remember when Ryan was under renovation they couldn't use one end zone and both teams had to play in the same direction. It might be the worst stadium in the Power 5.

It is my understanding that visiting teams to Iowa will go to great pains to cover the pink with black plastic. Penn state is the oldest stadium in the big ten- Beaver Field dates to 1909- it was on the other side of camps dismantled and put back together as beaver stadium. the lower 20 rows or so are original to beaver field thus making it the oldest big ten stadium AND the oldest stadium in FBS Football.
My former co worker (since passed away) remembered Beaver Field. I think it was by Rec Hall. I think he said tickets were around $8 to $10. The team's actual first "stadium" was the lawn of Old Main and had a capacity of zero.
That Purdue stadium is an old picture that part behind the tiny south end zone seats is now an area where there’s tables and only season ticket holders can go in that area right now they just finished a massive jumbo tron I heard it’s one of the biggest jumbo Trons in either the US or The World

Fun fact: Maryland Stadium used to be known as Byrd Stadium,named after former school president Harold Byrd ,but had gotten renamed due to Byrd being a proponent of Segregation and removed his name from the Stadium, and elsewhere on campus. Due to selling the Naming rights it's now known as SECU Stadium, SECU being short for State Employees Credit Union.

I went to a game at Ryan Field about 16 years ago. We sat in that section you pointed out where they should have just continued the curve. I agree they should have, because if you look at the position of their Jumbotron you can’t even see it from those seats. It was not really the best stadium
