    "your blade is indecisive, i could never lose to you" - best thing he says. Since Guan Yu fought for Cao Cao and Shu

    The kicker here is Zhang Liao historically IS the STRONGEST Officer of the Three Kingdoms (not Lu Bu interestingly).
    This scene really deserves justice; Zhang Liao needs more arse-kicking moments.

      Read actual Chinese historical texts. DW was based off of the Romance of the 3 Kingdoms which is VERY LOOSELY based off history, but not ACTUAL history.
      Guan Yu is very strong physically, but Zhang Liao was without a doubt historically the strongest fighter of ancient China during the 3 Kingdoms era.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 9 лет назад +5

      *****
      Dian Wei was a very loyal bodyguard to Cao Cao, which DW portrays very accurately in-game. A very skilled fighter in history and a cool character to play as well.
      Cao Ren was a cousin of Cao Cao and again history said he did lead a sizable force under the Wei flag for Cao Cao. I don't know if he was a strong fighter but he was a good general: he lead and won a fair number of battles.

      MrMetalfreak1337 Zhang Liao was the best, he achieved many crucial victories, the Hefei's defense is still today one of the most incredible war events, maybe the most incredible ever.. He was in the 5 elite generals of that era, and he was the best of these 5 (i saw a documentary about that, and you can read it even on wikipedia). Cao Cao's army was the strongest, so he had the stronger men with him, and Zhang Liao was a complete warrior, with amazing fight skills, smartness, bravery and a strong personality.. All of these were good warriors, but Zhang Liao was just the perfect one.. (Lu Bu was strong, but he wasn't smart like Zhang Liao or others great warriors, he lost too much battles)

    • @A_B_92
      @A_B_92 9 лет назад +22

      MrMetalfreak1337 Strange yes, because Guan Yu lost to Xu Huang at Fangcheng, fell into a Lu Meng's trap, captured by Ma Zhong and then executed.. Zhang Liao died of illness and no one beat him on the battlefield.. You talk about mithology, i talk about reality.. Another thing, remember that Xu Huang who beat Guan Yu, was in the 5 elite generals, and Zhang Liao was the best of these 5, so the best of that era

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 9 лет назад +20

      MrMetalfreak1337
      I think you're mistaking something. Guan Yu is worshipped today not because he was very strong (that he was) but because of his undying loyalty to what he believed in: Liu Bei.
      This is why in Hong Kong (where I was born) both Police & Triad have a figure of Guan Yu at the altar: it is a prayer of loyalty & pledge, less of all-out strength.
      But as a fighter & general of the 3 kingdoms era, as Loredano explains, Zhang Liao was nearly unbeatable in battle. Only old age let to his death, yet his name on the battlefield incites fear at the enemy camp.

  • @aygrav
    @aygrav Год назад +6

    This scene was dope and did Zhang Liao justice and all but everyone forgets that this was near the end of the Battle of Changban. Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun were both drained from saving other men and constantly creating openings for Liu Bei’s escape. In Guan Yu’s case, he just came back from serving Cao Cao and that’s why Zhang Liao said he’s indecisive because Guan Yu’s mind wasn’t set straight on what he wanted. He wanted to go back to his brother but also still felt like he hadn’t repaid his debt to Cao Cao for taking him in instead of killing him. So his will to fight with true judgement wasn’t there because as we know Liao looked up to Guan Yu as a teacher and mentor. Put everyone at full stamina in this fight and Guan Yu is winning this solo. Adding Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun on top of that wouldn’t even be fair that would be overkill. But still, a very great scene that portrays how much on the backfoot the Shu Forces were from constantly running from Cao Cao’s forces and trying to seek refuge while also trying to save as many civilians as possible.

    • @challengerofchaos1007
      @challengerofchaos1007 10 месяцев назад +1

      This needs more attention. Chronologically, Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei would indeed be drained after what we see them do in the Shu Story, so I assume they were resting when Zhang Liao was fighting Guan Yu, since they don’t show up until after Liu Bei was concerned about Guan Yu. Also with Guan Yu, you’re right, his mentality wasn’t completely on track.

    Zhang Liao was truly known for his victory against Wu on He Fei. With only 800 men of Wei, Zhang Liao managed to drive Wu forces back, which Wu outnumbered Wei with a totally great number of troops. Psychologically, officers of Wei who was in He Fei would give in or be down. This battle proves how brave Zhang Liao was. So, yes, historically, he IS totally awesome. About him being defeated by Ding Feng, I'm still not sure about the detail. Can someone tell me about the detail of Liao defeated by Feng?

    • @theruder9
      @theruder9 9 лет назад +8

      Wu outnumbering Wei in that fight is a bit of an understatement, Wu marched with 100,000 troops, and although Zhang Liao had about 7000 at the time he refused to force them to come with him, only taking 800 when he rode out.
      Zhang Liao caught the plague and died while marching home, after one of the later battles against Wu. Him dying in battle was made up in re-tellings to make it more interesting. Which is the farthest thing from the truth, as Zhang Liao's true story is far more interesting, and it raises the question as to what would have happened if his health hadn't failed him. A famous quote before the start of his last battle was a warning to Lu Fan from Sun Quan, "Zhang Liao may be sick, but he is still as invincible as ever." Which in the end turned out to be true, despite dying immediately after the battle ended, he still defeated Lu Fan's entire force.

    • @kyoyatategami1385
      @kyoyatategami1385 9 лет назад +1

      Ruder Nine if his health didn't failed him, Wei will conquer all..
      I don't know for sure about he vs ding feng, but you should remember, he originally Lu Bu's man, but after the battle at Xia Pi, he joins to Wei.. so Zhang Liao isn't always win..:)

    • @theruder9
      @theruder9 9 лет назад +4

      kyoya tategami Zhang Liao was nowhere near Xia Pi when Lu Bu died. He was in no way responsible for that defeat.

    • @Neifz
      @Neifz 9 лет назад

      Ruder Nine His death was unrelated to his feats at Hefei/Xiaoyao Ford. It came during the early days of Cao Pi's reign, which gives about 5-7 years between Hefei and his death. And he died in his 50s which was really the average lifespan for the era. In his Sanguozhi biography it states "natural causes", and that warning about him being "ill" was incidental, not that he had an ongoing battle with a plague or something.
      And the Wu troops suffered from dysentery after the siege of Hefei,

    • @theruder9
      @theruder9 9 лет назад

      Naif Alhumood Alright sorry, by Plague, I mean just general sickness, (My bad) which although isn't the end all be all as to what was most likely to have happened to him, is the most common assumption considering Cao Pi's care of him. And I never said that his death had anything to do with his fights... Why would they that doesn't make any sense. Where's that coming from, because I'm rereading my comment and I'm not sure where I could have misspoke i that regard.

    The only possible way Jiang Wei could've became emporer was if Zhuge Liang overthrew Liu Shan like he was supposed to, but chose not to do.
    And yes, the generals followed him. They disagreed with his constant attacks on Wei but they knew he was loyal and was a great general, but like I stated before, he didn't know when to quit, and it became the reason for his downfall.

    @Derinfrekans Now their deaths. If i remember correctly Zhang Liao died of an arrow wound from a fight with Ding Feng. In Guan Yu's case it took the combination of Cao Ren, Pang De, Yu Jin, and Xu Huang on Wei's side. Lu Meng, Lu Xun, several of Wu's better mid card generals, and I think Gan Ning was in this campaign too on Wu's side. Add in the betrayals of Mi Fang, Fu Shi Ren, Meng Da, and Liu Feng on Shu's own side and then after a long campaign we finally have a dead Guan Yu.

    Of course he couldn't, that was my point from the start, Zhuge Liang not taking over like he was supposed to prevented Jiang from ever having that chance.
    And again, considering how Jiang Wei had FULL military commands of Shu's entire army, and I mean the ENTIRE army all through out Shu, he could've easily revolted if he wanted to, but again, he didn't, and he never was going to. I'm not saying he should've, I'm simply stating he could. The fact your denying that shows how much you don't know.

    heck could anyone kill him at that point? Remarkable scene nonetheless.

    His northern campaigns were opposed because he was draining Shu's resources, but what was scary about it was that Jiang Wei didn't realize what damage he was doing to Shu. He thought he was doing what was best for Shu but in reality he was destroying Shu with his campaigns. That's why they were fearing how much power he had, because he wanted to keep attacking, and he had the authority to do so.

    And also, it appears as if you've completely misunderstood my point.
    I'm not denying the impact the Sima clan made. They were the reason the Jin Dynasty was started in the first place. And yes, the Sima's were a big reason for Shu's demise, but it is a well established fact that Liu Shan did more damage to Shu than Wei did. But in the end, it doesn't matter. If Jiang Wei were to have taken over, Wei still would've won. There is no denying that. Shu never stood a chance.

    Zhangfei scared off Caocao's men in Zhangban by himself. The novel included the part where Zhangfei's men make noise and dust in the forest behind him to make their enemies think Zhangfei's reinforcement has arrived, but in Zhengshi, there's no such strategy. Caocao's army couldn't go near him because they were scared of him.Xiahou Dun,despite popular image, was not a great fighter or general. He barely won in any battles and was more of a army farmer, but a nice guy who earned people's respect.

I was stating that the way Shu's years happened after Liu Bei died would've been A LOT different, hell they might have even lasted much longer, but they weren't going to win no matter what happened.

    That still doesn't excuse the fact that not taking over Liu Shan and becoming Emperor was an incredibly stupid decision on Zhuge Liang's part. Liu Bei not only made a request, but he gave Zhuge Liang an order. No sub general would lose respect for Liang if he followed Liu Bei's orders and wishes because they would probably do the same thing.

    Guan Yu was said to be one of the few people able to stand a chance in a one on one fight with Lu Bu. Add Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun and Lui Bei into a fight between Guan Yu and Zhang Liao and you are starting a ridiculously over powered fight. Don't get me wrong, Zhang Liao is one of my favorite officers, he would hold his own for a bit against just Guan Yu, but Guan Yu alone would have beat him in time.

    Ding Feng is the guy that always keeps Wu alive in the last battles. If a rebellion is in Wei, he's there. If Wu attacks Wei, he's there. An historically when Shu fell to Jin he did commanded an army to go aid them, but he was too late. he was a great addition to Wu's ending story. They should add Lu Kang and Du Yu/Yang Hu tho :( those two are epicand they where the ones that conquered Wu so...

    Deng Ai's 30000 troops all died except for 2500~ after his Yin Ping "tour" came to an end, Liu Shan's son, Liu Chen even said "Deng lost majority of his troop, if we are able to stay on guard for few more days, they will consume the rest of their food, meanwhile we could wait for Jiang Wei's troop". Plus Wu is sending Ding Feng and 3000+ men for reinforcement.

    Liu Bei was labeled benevolent, but his ambition rivals Cao Cao's. Also, Wu did not ambush Guan Yu and Zhang Fei with traitor. Zhang Fei punished his officers because he was drunk, and Guan Yu mistreated his officers.

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    No, it clearly isn't. Both are betrayal, no matter what way you twist your logic around it. They DID betray Wei. Sima Shi and Sima zhao were serving UNDER WEI. They stabbed Wei in the fact and killed god knows how many decedents of the Cao family.
    Cao Pi never rebelled, who the hell did Liu Bei break off of, and Zhang Liao and Zhao Yun weren't the kind of people that I was referring to. I was referring to people like Zhang He and Wei Yan.

    yea, and it also has to do with balance of the game. Wei has more generals, more castles and more soldiers, so they had to give better stats to some generals of Shu to balance out the game difficulty.

    Thing is, Zhao yun's strength may not be as strong as some other generals such as Guan yu and Zhang Fei, but he's worshipped as "the best" for his over all rating, such as the combination of strength, intellegence, leadership, loyalty and many other aspects.

    You can't "die" of old age. This is a well known fact. Zhuge Liang basically died via natural causes, which was very common at any age. As soon as you had an illness, you're chances of surviving were very slim at that time. Zhuge was definitely old, don't get me wrong, but it really doesn't matter, at any age he most likely would've died if he caught onto an illness.

  • @EmmanCaburianThe7stars44

    no I meant Zhang Liao trying to beat Guan Yu, Zhang Fei,and Zhao Yun. that has no logic because Zhang Liao should be the one who's struggling to fight against these 3 in the cutscene. Dont you think so too?

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    Regardless Shu wasn't going to beat Wei in the long run. Wei's generals were still head and shoulders above Shu's, this wasn't like the days when Shu had Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, Zhuge Liang and Ma Chao, they didn't have the great commanders of those days anymore. And the fact that they were hilariously outnumbered didn't help either in terms of men and supplies.

  • @PaulosTheGamer
    @PaulosTheGamer 12 лет назад

    That sounds accurate, shame about Wu just being a supporting side... :p and Shu were full of fools- without Guan Yu/Zhang Fei/Zhao Yun Liu Bei never would have made it, and Cao Cao was the genius out of ALL of the rulers of that time... no wonder usually won- until he got arrogant at Chi Bi.

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    You're saying I have no logic? You are literally saying that this, Wei losing trust for Jiang Wei because they thought he was going to be join Shu so they lock him outside of their castle with the enemy attacking, is not betrayal. I don't know what world or reality you are currently living in, but realistically that is a betrayal in every way possible.

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    Jiang Wei was locked outside the gates of his castle, he was betrayed by Wei because they thought that Jiang Wei would betray them. It was either join Shu or die, there was no escape, he was surrounded. Guan Yu tried to run away and got captured, but here's the thing, the kingdom of Shu didn't betray Guan Yu. Why should Jiang Wei be loyal to a nation that betrayed him?

  • @0oLokio0
    @0oLokio0 11 лет назад

    In Romance of Three Kingdoms, there are more than 8 duels, where ever you read that is not true, read the book yourself if you're interested in it. Zhaoyun's most famous battle is in Chang Ban, although it's not exactly a duel, he single handly killed over 50 minor/major generals of Wei (killed some in 1v1 or 1v2) excluding soldiers(chapter 41 RoTK). At age of 7x, he duel and killed 5 famed generals from wei (chapter 92) there are still much I havn't mentioned, but those are some examples

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    And what do you mean Jiang Wei didn't hold a lot of power? Jiang Wei was in charge of the military commands of Shu, he had shitloads of power. He could've revolted against Shu when ever he wanted to and probably would've succeeded since it was obvious Liu Shan had no intentions of putting up any kind of fights against anyone.

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    Yes, in fact Zhang He's death was one of the few major fuck ups Sima Yi had, considering how Zhang He warned him of a possible ambush and Sima Yi said "fuck logic just go and attack". But again, I'm not trying to derail how great Sima Yi was, I just simply felt like pointing that out.

    Zhang Liao must have taken LuBu's weapons, that's the only way he can take on the best of the Shu army. This clip might have just been some irony that Koei put in there. It's similar too how LuBu fought the 3 brothers at Hu Lao Gate.

  • @OldSchoolECW
    @OldSchoolECW 11 лет назад

    Guan Yu killed Yan Liang. Zhang Fei held back a bunch of men because he destroyed the bridge, not because of how great he was, and Zhao Yun just road his horse while killing barely any men in his journey to save Liu Bei's son, oh yea, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun are definitely not overrated.

    Jiang Wei wasn't a match for Sima Yi but that's not the point. I wasn't arguing that Jiang Wei would've propelled Shu to victory, he never would've. His campaigns were another reason for Shu's failures, but they would've stood a much better chance against Wei with Jiang Wei in control than with Liu Shan in control. This is an undeniable fact.

    Yeah, in reality/history, Zhang Liao respected and looked up to Guan Yu as a mighty and honorable warrior that he hoped to one day be as strong as. In this video, he treats Guan Yu like an inferior, and owns him AND Zhang Fei (who scared and held off the entire Wei army by himself) AND Zhao Yun (who single-handedly charged through the Wei army and saved Liu Bei's son)...
    In short, it seems Lu Bu has done a much better job leading and teaching Zhang Liao in DW7.

    It was actually Pang de who hit Guan yu with an arrow. Cao Ren wasn't completely defeated, but he still was stuck in fan castle for months until reinforcement arrived. But Cao ren was great as well as he was able to hold out for so long with few men and supplies in such a small castle. And Yujin and 7th battalion, Wei's best, surrendered to Guan Yu. Again, flood didn't just affect Wei only, it attacked both of them but Guan was able to recover quickly. If that's not "defeat" I don't know what is

  • @OldSchoolECW

    Guan Yu didn't see Cao Cao at Red Cliffs. The only thing you even got right there was that Guan Yu did capture Pang De.

  • @phungphuoc3572

    The novel is Shu bias, some of the events were dramatized to view Shu as the heroes. In fact, three brothers didn't fight Dong Zhuo and the battle of Si Shui gate didn't happen. Speaking of brothers, they aren't real oath brothers in real life, just close friends who call each other bro to the point of sharing the same bed. And to be fair, even Guan Yu admit that Zhang Liao is equal to him in the novel, the only reason he stays low because Guan Yu asked Cao Cao to spare him.

    Lu Bu was rather good at leading, he just didn't rellied on strategy and relied more on mere charging and srength. He was a rather good commander and warrior, and if he wasnt such a traitor and cocky he would have been one of the best commanders in the land. (And for the record, i think Ma Chao is the best just because his armour spells "fickung epic" in all possible ways)

  • @Rexinization
    @Rexinization 11 лет назад

    Zhang Liao is one of the greatest strategists in the Chinese history. He defended HeFei with only thousands vs. Sun Quan's 100 thousand men; strong Wu fighter Tai Shi Ci died in that battle. Later when Sun Quan had a chance to defeat Wei, he always held back because of that battle at HeFei. However, I don't think Zhang Liao himself could take on 4 of them at the same time....
