  • The Illinois Senate passed a new law requiring CTA, Pace, and Metra to exclusively purchase electric buses HB1342. I'm going to talk about why it's problematic.
The Bill can be found here: legiscan.com/IL/bill/HB1342/2023
This is a re-upload. I was mistaken, Metra is in fact NOT affected by this bill.
Thank you to @ChicagolandTransit for providing some of the footage in this video.

It really sucks that Nova’s leaving the US market. I’m hoping that European or Japanese companies can try to enter the US market as has happened with various train companies

Speaking of falling apart, the blue lines 2600s are in worst shape however the 7000s are taking long with their issues which is making the 2600s stressed out.

There's also the 2600s on Brown and Orange lines

Given how cold Chicago gets I’m still skeptical of how well electric buses can run. A hybrid approach might be more prudent

I have a feeling we'll be the last city with shoeboxes on the streets, and I like that

Going just as slow here in TransLink BC but in this case the issue is more so with the overhead charging.

I’m so glad you made this video! Cta definitely need to stick with new flyer in the purchasing of modern buses, plus new flyer has many many options engine/fuel speaking. You know Cta will run the old 1000 series n up to the grave and them artics should be updated with real time inside destination display, emergency door covers, tints, better heating and A/C etc. Who’s ever in charge of purchasing CTA’s fleet need to be replaced immediately.

Another tip: buses 1630-2029 in the 1000-series is rusting really bad a lot of them have sat at South Shops for 2 years.

New Flyer will probably dominate CTA again.

I think Cta didn’t like the idea of them and pace having the same buses. Just saying

Probably why CTA had no regrets ditching those NABI buses. They were like the 737 MAX 8 of buses

I mean new flyer is a choice they might not stick out because almost every bus system has a new flyer or b y d if they have articulated buses here in San Francisco we have a fleet of 10 electric buses all on trial from four different manufacturers so far the potatoes as I call them haven't been in service for a while Nova is one of them they're pretty decent Muni likes using the new Flyers and byd's since they're more reliable

Battery electric buses have a niche future but shouldn’t be relied on as the backbone of the fleet. The solution is tried and true for a century and with much less environmental impact. It has less catastrophic fire risk too. PUT THE OVERHEAD WIRES BACK UP. Admit that removing them was a mistake. Trolley buses or streetcars with a small fleet of (BEV) battery buses for flexibility.

With your name I expected to see buses from Burj Dubai. Like your videos of the buses especially the 66 Chicago Ave Bus which I used to ride every day decades ago. I noticed in your video at Chicago Ave & Ashland (1:03) is the still the Jerusalem store. Which when I was a kid, Walgreens used to be there. One thing to mention is how these electric buses will behave during a fire. There are many videos were in China they have caused fires. Also in the USA there are cases where electric cars parked in the garage caused the house to catch fire. With salt sprayed in the winter on the streets, I don't know what provisions have been made to keep the batteries from corroding and causing a public fire hazard. A good follow up video is how the Chicago Fire Dept is prepare for these conditions.
