David Scott had to replace his Omega Speedmaster with the Bulova on the Apollo 15 mission. Astronauts were allowed to bring 1 personal item and Commander Scott brought his Bulova.
I love the look of the Omega Moonwatch, and it is definitely one of my grail watches. That said, when looked at objectively, the Omega Speedmaster falls short in a lot of categories vis-a-vis a modern watch. First, it is a manual wind watch, and as pointed out in the video - one must be careful not to overwind it. Then theres the hesalite crystal. I understand why NASA chose that instead of a watch with a more durable (but potentially shatter-prone) crystal, but for us daily desk jockeys, hesalite is going to get scratched up. The water resistance of the Speedy is also quite weak, at around 50m (but i doubt any Speedy owners would even be confortable taking it for a swim in the pool). All that said, if I had a spare $6000 lying around - Id absolutely buy one! 😂 Full disclosure - I bought a Speedy homage made by that company that shares a name with a certain supercar, and frankly, I do love the look and can appreciate that it is objectively a very solid watch - for the even more reasonable price of around $120! The Bulova is very intriguing to me because it isnt merely a more expensive homage to the Speedy - it also went to the moon (although astronaut David Scott's Bulova had a manual-wijd movement also, and not this 262KHz movement in this modern iteration) and its almost identical look is because it had to meet NASA specs, not because it wanted to copycat the Speedy. Plus, that ultra-accurate movement is a real allure for me. I do love the mystique of manual and automatic watches, but resetting the time every week or so starts to lose its charm after a while. I think the Bulova will be my next Christmas present to myself. 😊
Full disclosure - I bought a Speedy homage made by that company that shares a name with a certain supercar, and frankly, I do love the look and can appreciate that it is objectively a very solid watch - for the even more reasonable price of around $120! - Haa! Love it! The PD-17##.
Being an Average Joe as well... We can always find something to do with the $5000 we'll save by going with the Bulova. Speaking of Bulova, they make great stuff like this and the Devil Diver and then they have 200 other gawdawful looking models that look like a small child with a head injury drew them. IMO if they'd just tighten up their range and focus on the stuff that moves they'd be back rubbing shoulders with Seiko like the old days.
Hell yeah! Couldn’t agree more. Thanks for watching brother. I would buy that Seamaster you have in blue over the Speedy and save a few thousand bucks to boot.
Hello Joe, terrific video, thank you so much for the shout out and your kind words. It has been my pleasure and privilege to lend these watches to your channel for review. I am also grateful for your friendship brother. I bought the Omega Speedy first, and then bought the Bulova Lunar Pilot which believe it or not I found on sale from an AD in Canada for $400 (score 👏). I love Omega, own 2 of them including the Speedy and a Seamaster Chronograph, but I have to confess that I really like the Bulova Lunar Pilot, and have a tendency to also wear it more often. At normal ongoing retail of $500+, the Bulova is just a tremendous watch with true space/moon history. It packs a hell of a movement, sapphire crystal, great design and awesome packaging including an additional nylon strap. Very comfortable despite its size too. I'm very lucky to have both, but in all honesty, and agreeing with you, it is hard to justify the price differential for the Omega. Thank you again Joe for your great work, kind words, friendship and giving me the opportunity to be a part of this episode of Average Joe Watch Reviews 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Very cool of you to lend Joe these beauties for the channel. I used to own a Lunar Pilot but I sold it and have regretted it ever since. Thankfully they're very affordable and I'm sure it will be back in my collection soon. I never owned a Speedy but I do have a Seamaster 300 from 2007.

$6000.00 and you have to wind it by hand? That's nuts! I can think of many ways to spend $6000 incuding buying a whole bunch of perfectly fine quaetz and automatic (self winding) Swiss,Japanese or German watches and probably have enough left over to go on a weekend back home to Hawaii.

For 500 bucks the lunar pilot is a pretty slick watch. If you truly want a speedmaster but you can’t swing it finically you would probably be better off getting the Bulova over the moon swatch
Just want to mention that they look similar because they were designed to NASA specs, not to copy each other. A Speedmaster with a yellow gold case and dial would look great, but wouldn't have gotten to the moon.
Why is the second hand not a smooth? Simple: battery life. Smooth movement uses a lot more power. (The movement is the same. It’s how it’s used by the watch.)

Hi great review love your channel buddy i own a couple of Omega & vintage Bulova i agree the Bulova lunar is great value & in my view is better looking love to see you do a review on the Bulova lunar pilot Snoopy 43mm cheers from the UK.
It’s a beautiful homage but as you said, way overpriced. I’d sit and wait for the preowned version to start hitting the market. Accutron doesn’t hold its value well.
I have 2 bulova luna pilots the dark side and the 50th anniversary and there great watches but there not even a close comparison to the speedmaster professional. Sure both look similar and they both look and wear great but when you get to the heart of it (the movement) that's night and day.
‘Bulova definitly took inspiration from omega’… not so, sorry to disagree. Both companies designed their watches according to the NASA specification during the selections for the official moon watch. This is the reason why they look so similar.
This is why I own a Bulova lunar pilot so I could own a seamaster planet ocean! 😍 can’t justify 2 moon watches especially when divers are just as amazing
They are very different watches.... One is a relic from before the days of electricity and computers... Kind of like candles at one time long ago. The other is a modern watch from the days of LED lamps and electric cars
They're lovely but $1000 extra for two bits of $20 sapphire is hilarious. It's a shame there are no perfect replicas of the omega, would definitely buy one of them. The bulova is a better watch on every metric. Accuracy is the watch.
I was able to get two moonswatches, Earth and Pluto, but my inability to get the Moon version drove me not to get a Speedmaster, but to get a Lunar Pilot instead. At less than twice the price of a Moonswatch, the LP is ten times more watch. Sorry Swatch/Omega.
Accuracy-wise, the Bulova crushes the spring box ... and that's the primary goal of a timepiece. Omega makes jewelry .. Bulova makes watches. High Accuracy Quartz rules!
U don't just used to own a seamaster.... u do own a speedmaster, its on your 1st youtube if I'm not mistaken... the MK40.. I just got that MK40 last year... ✌🏾 ejal_baba_horology_maniac
You have to be kidding me !! You re comparing two totally different watches. You re comparing a superior watch in every way ( Speedy) refinement and pedigree. If you cannot afford the watch and want to convince yourself that buying a 500 dollar watch makes it comparable you are dreaming. The Omega Speedy is class miles away better than that watch. Not to say it isn’t a good watch but really ?
The ignorance is the fact that you are comparing a watch and another watch .. not the story .. you are that guy .. btw the Speed master is not a homage to the moon . The Bulova is a copy cat.. The Speedy has a racing history and it is in poor taste to even talk about comparing them .. im not a snob ( that guy ) as you say lol just being honest here .. comparing a timepiece thats mechanical to a quartz movement is ludicrous and i own quartz watches nothing wrong with them just apples and oranges.. of course 1000s of dollars vs 500 dollars is a big difference but this is a classic you get what you pay for moment..

Love them both. Just love moonwatches in general. Thanks. Keep up the great work.
Hey bud! Welcome back buddy. Thanks for watching. Hope all is well.
Have you seen the watch related teddy baldassare and Kevin O'Leary Videos they made a lot of them 😎👍
They're lovely but $1000 extra for two bits of $20 sapphire is hilarious. It's a shame there are no perfect replicas of the omega, would definitely buy one of them. The bulova is a better watch on every metric. Accuracy is the watch.
Just bought a new Lunar Pilot with a Bracelet for $450 on Amazon. Can't wait to get it on my wrist!
@@phil2518 prime day deal? :-D
Great input ,very precise
Thank you.
@@AvgJoeWatchReviews how about a collaborative content together- LIVE !
Why is Omega giving people the middle finger?
Or…definitely male anatomy.
Yes! I can see that as this collab not only helped Omega but surprisingly has helped Lunar Pilot sales as well.
Scratch that itch. Buy a Bulova. I agree.
Much much better than a MoonSwatch.
@@AvgJoeWatchReviews Do you remember when on Chrono24 a Moonswatch was sold at 15k?🤦♂️
@@manusverzoni2384 I don’t but I’ve heard of some outrageous prices. Was there anything special about this particular watch?
@@AvgJoeWatchReviews Only greed and narcissism.
i pick up the Bulova this week -- Omega looks great but for $6000. i have better ideas for that kinda $'s
You and I both. I was looking at Bulova Lunar Pilots yesterday ironically. 👍
Accuracy-wise, the Bulova crushes the spring box ... and that's the primary goal of a timepiece. Omega makes jewelry .. Bulova makes watches. High Accuracy Quartz rules!
if they're worth just over 6k, this Moonwatch is not based on the 321 Mov't though ;)
El Bulova es mucho más chulo y 12 veces más barato,
no es porque yo lo tenga ya que soy totalmente objetivo.
Great review 👏 👌
Thanks Matty S!
I love the Bulova Lunar pilot, but sadly it's too big for me.
That’s my gripe as well. It’s a shame.
Was David Scott an "industry plant" before industry plants were a thing?
Omega looks better but not 5k better
U don't just used to own a seamaster.... u do own a speedmaster, its on your 1st youtube if I'm not mistaken... the MK40.. I just got that MK40 last year...
✌🏾

I sold the Speedmaster triple date (first video on my channel) and I just sold my orange Seamaster bro. I’m Omegaless! I need to change that. 😂
You never put the Bulova on your wrist by itself?!? The closest you get is putting it around your arm to compare it to the Speedie... Disappoint.
8:52 you need to watch the video in its entirety before commenting
You have to be kidding me !! You re comparing two totally different watches. You re comparing a superior watch in every way ( Speedy) refinement and pedigree. If you cannot afford the watch and want to convince yourself that buying a 500 dollar watch makes it comparable you are dreaming. The Omega Speedy is class miles away better than that watch. Not to say it isn’t a good watch but really ?
@@paulwhite8556 you’re ignorant to the fact that they both have a place in history as “moon watches”. Come on man, don’t be that guy.
JUST GAINED A SUB
Personally i think the Bulovas dial is better designed and less cramped easer to read and its ever bit as 3d as the Omega.
Yeah, I have to agree. The price is right as well.
@@AvgJoeWatchReviews Definitely! you can find them reasonably priced online. It just feels a lot more expensive than it would suggest! Cheers
I should have known there not yours.sins u rubbed them all on a hard table
