Hi, I do remember an issue of soap in the Persian Gulf early 60’s that we could use in salty or brakish water and would nearly lather up for shaving. In that area such soaps were important as petrol was cheaper than drinking water, it looked sort of like bars of Sunlight soap that you can get these days. Interesting just like the “toiletry apron” that was issued to hold all the toiletries and could be tied around your waist leaving your arms free to do the washing manoeuvres. Keep it up, you still come up with some interesting bits that jog my memory archives. Harera..
I don't know if you have done this before but it would be interesting to see what kit soldiers bought to improve on the issue stuff. For instance I bought various items over the years.
British soldiers rarely carried individual issue stoves, early in the war photos occaisionally show the Tommy Cooker, an alcohol gel stove in a tin, later folding stoves were issued alongside the mess tin and 24 hour rations for assault troops. These were only meant for limited use.

"the “toiletry apron” that was issued to hold all the toiletries and could be tied around your waist leaving your arms free" ...sounds interesting!
Realy usefull, the best place I have found to get items like that is car boot sales. When it's hot historical soap has an interesting smell.
Nice small personal items......such things indicate a special degree of the Sweet Sickness we hold dear.

What about WWII what toothpaste and shave for that?
It would be better if they would make reproductions of those personal items for reenactment use.
