  • Tom Hanks spoke to ”Extra’s” Terri Seymour at the L.A. premiere of his new miniseries “Masters of the Air,” which tells the story of a group of World War II airmen. He talked about what he hopes people take away from the movie and also dished on teaming up with Austin Butler again after they worked together on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “Masters of the Air” premieres January 26 on AppleTV+.

NetFlix released a 4K disc of All Quiet on the Western Front which is a departure for them. It will be interesting to see if the extended version of Napoleon comes out on disc. Lately some big name directors like Christopher Nolan have been voicing their support for movies on physical media so I wonder what Speilberg thinks. The 4K disc version of Oppenheimer sold out in less than a week. Maybe Apple will take note of this.

    Tom Hanks, the major story that is missing from your multi WWII mini series is that of those that won the air war in the Pacific, and none represent that story better than the Enterprise CV-6, the most decorated ship in WWII, and the Air Groups that were the purpose of their existence. Those Air Groups on the carriers consisted fighters VF, torpedo planes VT, and dive bombers VB. The island-hopping strategy for victory was won by these Air Groups.

    What Hanks and Spielberg has done in the WWII scene is remarkable. I just went on IBDM and looked at reviews saying the acting etc was shit, regarding Masters... I dont think so... Its different, yes. But it was also a different setting entirely lol. I was hating a bit on The Pacific in the start as well, because they came in at another angle, compared to BOB, it wasnt the same... And i was still young... It grew on me as time passed... Now they are on the same level for me personally. And now with this third installment, from the flyboys perspective, i can see how it rubs some geeks the wrong way. I rly do... I didnt even think making a 3rd series about bombers would be that captivating, because it sounds boring as shit tbh. But for me it isnt. SOmehow they made it captivating, at least for me. We're so far ahead in the future, u cant get the same level of grit and authenticity as with the previous series, because all the vets are more or less dead already, and they had to sprinkle a bit more "stardust" on it. I Dont frekkin mind. I think its great. They be paying homage to the pilots and their efforts during WWII, respect!

    Austin is the worst one in the show. Can’t stand him. He overacts like trying to win an Oscar every time on screen but it comes out dry and monotone and unlikeable. If the real guy was like this he’d have no friends!! All of it is so annoying and he clearly has mental problems thinking his Elvis. Heck a few times he acted like he does in the elvis. Someone tell him knock it off and method acting is a joke for mental patients!! You are not that person get over it don’t make others call you the characters name!! Seek help!!! Also the CGI is awful just awful and they would have been better off using the B17 in a free video game than what they did. Also they are all over the place with timelines stories people it’s hard to know what’s what unlike band of brothers they just focused on a few from the start while this is focused on several bombers full of several guys so it adds up gets confusing. The cgi tho just yuck heck they couldn’t even getting how a b17 lands correctly that and the fact it looks like it’s from a PS1 or PS2 at best is killing it for me.

    • @BC-op7rj
      @BC-op7rj 4 месяца назад +1

      I'd agree. Austin is better suited to play George Michaels if they make a biography. He hardly fits the mould of leader of a squadron commander. This one so far has the less attention to detail in Greyhound. That made Tom Hanks appear like a modern John Wayne being John Wayne and swaggering through a half stitched narrative. He did better as Captain Phillips or Sully which had better attention to the details. The Pacific and Band of Brothers were much closer to the realities and well above this. This did not really show the persons in uniform with any nervous hand twitch sort of defects that they brought with them, apart from a vomiting navigator. It is a disappointment compared to the dramatic Memphis Belle and even Catch 22 out shines it for character of crew. The usual CGI for equipment is fine, but more the haircuts, grooming and personal attitudes had been forgotten via modern standards. The interaction between men and women was too familiar for the era.
      I'm critical not of the misbehaviour, but that it was in front of their subordinates, when normally the leader would be under pressure from superiors to keep their ranks in line. Any fight picked would be for a good reason and there was much indoctrination went into good allied relations back then. Looking for a fight with RAF pilots would be discouraged as great efforts were made at the time. Americans would prefer their own canteens serving their beers and music. Generally they'd be too tired to pick bar fights though would not be shy. Typically a brawl between allies would be over pay differences, women or who was doing a better combatant. The debate depicted regards the differing of grammar and spelling I think is more of a modern online topic only. Back then several aircrew (though educated) would still likely have illiterate family, so they came with little tradition then to be upheld on who spelt or said what how. That It would be more likely caused by a privately educated toffy English person to take exception to pronunciation or spelling by a yank. Arguing over the merits of day or night time tactics also seemed above their pay grades and more an old man's argument for post war. At that time they were just happy to live another day and not kill their crew by making any mistakes. I think that needs to be emphasised.
      Inter radio chatter also seemed like passengers rather than aircrew. I thought the ATC in Flying High was actually more credible. Noting on approach to Greenland, it was as there was nil briefing with the lack of call signs in use, headings given, questions on other traffic in the area. Basically they telling the listening Germans everything, including when to send out Ju88s to shoot down bombers as they arrived in Britain.
      Usually such boring stuff is skipped only by other movie makers. Their faces were not a dermatological mess from wearing primitive oxygen masks at altitude for hours but they did at least show what happens if you piss yourself in the cold altitude. Basically they just repeated other Movies and could have narrated more while say showing the ground crews toil. Nothing new unfortunately

      Interesting was getting a crystal clear phone line between a remote house in Scotland and a old pub in England during wartime . Similarly curious was that each crew member could easily communicate while in the air. No one talking over the other or back ground noise or simple intermittent losses via throat microphones. Not really calling enemy fighters as they entered and exited the box formation. Flare colours are limited so I'm curious to learn if one colour reserved for the close formation command, or was this adlib?

      Finally someone who says it as it is, definitely not in the same league as BoB or Pacific. The acting by the leads (Austin and his friend) to me is falling short in engaging me.. the lesser characters are demonstrating far more emotional engagement rather than delivering punchlines; ‘rack em up and knock them down’ seriously

    The guy (Butler) is super effeminate. Seems like an odd choice of lead.

      I have the same insights about him, but I wont discredit him for that. Let's see how he played in MotA and review. Also keep in mind there were plenty of men with such characteristics recruited and they had more balls then you do. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

      Just seems more boyish than anything.You forget how young these pilots were. Too many war movies out there with actors who're too old for their parts
