  • In this video I compare the industries that Fundsmith has investments in with the industries that have produced 20%+ compounders over the last decade.
What if you could double your chances of picking a great long term bet simply by focusing on certain industries and excluding others?

Before I even watch the video, I just want to say that terry Smith’s approach to investing is very easy to digest. But some people bastardize it by confusing what type of companies we should be buying.
If you buy high quality companies regardless of valuation, you will likely perform in-line with the index or may even underperform. There’s honestly no point to it because you’re taking higher risk, higher volatility, and will likely only perform in-line with the market. Certain larger youtubers will likely experience this pattern.
Buying high ROIC companies is a decent way of investing, but to ignore valuation like some people do is bastardizing Terry Smith’s way of investing.
I think as a rule of thumb, a lot of the companies shown have already experienced multiple expansion and that’s probably not the best way to find “value.” Like buying Costco at the peak is probably not a good idea. You’re getting a high quality company but the amount you’re paying for their cash flows is nosebleed.

Not too long ago Terry said that if he had to pick one sector for growth over the next 10 years it would be the pet industry.

My stock to capture some of that market is ABC, high quality and has an animal health segment, and although small, not nothing and is growing fast. Check out the metrics

I noticed with SMH after the 2001 it was depressed for 10 years. We could be heading into that scenario again so now I’m looking into either being okay with that and DCAing for 10 years until being rewarded or if there is another way like maybe riding the solar revolution with TAN etf or even just TSLA and ENPH. What do you think of those?

Would be interesting to see if its similar industries globally. A lot of Asian countries have economies growing faster than the US and their stock markets are a lot less looked at. Would be interesting to see if Japan and Korea's 20% performers were also in semis

One thing to note is that the semi conductor industry has almost all their companies as part of a massive ecosystem.
If something goes wrong with TSM or Samsung you can bet the entire industry will suffer with perhaps a few exceptions like TXN

Isn't this exactly the type of thinking that creates bad investments? You're basically saying "Past returns will continue". Better to find good value than what worked in the recent past (10 years history is short in investments)?
