  • In this video I cover the best size tank to keep vampire crabs in and all of the advantages and disadvantages of different tank sizes. From 5-gallon tanks all the way up to 20-gallon plus tanks.
    Thanks to everyone for submitting tons of footage for the verticle tank section. In the end I just ended up going with first in best dressed as there was too many to choose from.

      Hi. I have classic 5 gallon tank and don’t have a space for another tank. Saying it because I’m worried of crabs breeding. I don’t have space to keep babies. I was thinking keeping 2 females. Do you think that is daft or ok idea?
      Side question that I have not seen anyone anywhere answering: which geosesarma is best?

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  19 дней назад +1

      @@kingwenceslas4225 Females together is fine though you may still get babies depending on if they are pregnant when you get them so there is always a chance. But don't worry too much about babies the parents eat their young pretty quickly so the population stays in check without any effort.
      As for which species is the best there's no real answer. Most people don't have the luxury to choice from a big selection so just get whatever they can.
      There are a few slightly different characteristic between some species (molting on land and climbing more) but other than that they are basically all the same. The most important thing is not mixing any species/colours are they will fight and murder each other pretty fast.

    I just wanted to say thank you so much for really going indepth on the care, feeding, environment and behavior on these animals. You have no idea how invaluable this has been for me. Like bettas, it almost feels like a lot of people get them to be ornamental, which can be fine, but because of this it can be very difficult to find detailed info on them. I've been watching your videos and shorts and finally seeing how they behave when left to their own devices is exactly the info I've needed to be able to feel confident enough in setting up my own tank to properly provide for them. Thank you and I look forward to learning more!

      No problem at all 😊 thanks for taking the time to comment! You are right about them being a little bit like batta fish. They have been in the hobby for a long time but only semi recently have they taken off so I'm trying to get as much accurate and detailed information out there has possible for people to draw from. Hopefully they get looked after better!
      Fingers crossed it helps in the long run 😊

    Ive seen a seen store keep single vampire crabs in a tiny 20cm by 10cm by 10cm. They would change the water regularly and made an actually beautiful simple scape with a thin layer of sand, a rock and some moss. I was really surprised because i visited that store multiple times throughout months and the single crabs were all doing "well" but were all still pretty shy

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  8 месяцев назад +4

      Thats the perfect kind of tank type and size to use for a hospital tank. I'm guessing they are using them as display tanks so people can see them easily. Surprisingly decent for a store.
      Most stores keep them cramped up in mixed colours with mostly water. They kinda get mistreat led like bettafish in a lot of ways

      @@gh-dw3tg No mites yets. The worst thing I've had was some weird mold or fungus that was like cancer to plants. It just slowly crept across the landscape turning all plants and moss to melted Webbed slop. Was super weird I've never seen anything like it before or since.
      I cut it all out and dumped 100000000 extra springtails in and it went away thankfully.
      Was weird because I hadn't added anything to that tank for months.

      fantastic!!!! that thing spreading out like that was crazy. The good thing is that you did not rip your tank apart.....I did....mites overtook everything....and then decided to venture out of the tank.....imagine my surprise. Spring tails are awesome...I also have those really tiny ones in the water section..(different type I guess, came with the plants....cleans the top of the water section)..very very tiny......cheers! @@IndoorEcosystem

      As an Australian who hates the imperial system with a passion i know what you mean. But metric users are: 1. More likely to know the imperial conversation anyway. 2. If not, they're more likely to check. But I get your point. 😊
      At the end of the day though if everyone who's watched this gets out a tape measure or calculator for one reason of another that's a win! It means they are taking tank sizes seriously 😉

    What about tanks that go straight up and 12x12x24

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  2 месяца назад +1

      Vertical tanks are a lot more complicated to build successfully for the crabs. Not impossible but more advanced. If you're new it's best to start with standard long style tanks rather than vertical ones. I cover this in the viceo. 12x12x24 has too small of a base though I wouldn't use one this big. 18x18x? Is the smallest base you want for a vertical build.

  • @steampunk9722
    @steampunk9722 8 месяцев назад +2

    For a ten gallon tank, if I keep your recommended 1 male, 2 females, is overpopulation with the baby crabs going to be a problem? Aka will enough of them survive to adulthood that I'd have to make a second setup? I plan on getting my first crabs when the weather warms up, but don't feel ready to deal with breeding.

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  8 месяцев назад

      It depends a little bit on the complexity of the tank but a lot will get eaten as they grow slowly. I'm currently testing this scenario right now but need more time for a proper result. But I don't think there will be a major population issue looking at how it's going so far. Worst case scenario though you can take them to your local fish store for cred it $ usually.

    • @IndoorEcosystem

      You just need to keep a side colony of isopods to top up your vampire crab tank with. There's not many other better alternatives to them. Plus they are a great food source for your crabs!

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  8 месяцев назад +1

      There's a few videos in the vampire crab playlist about tank mates. But id try to only stick to springtails, isopods, snails, and shrimp.
      To add fish you need a ton more space to meet their minimum requirements as well.

  • @nvmbii

    Do you think it’s possible to keep a single crab or pair of female/male?

    • @IndoorEcosystem
      @IndoorEcosystem  4 месяца назад +1

      A single crab is not ideal. Even though they bicker and fight in groups they need company. You'd probably never see your solo crab. He'd be hiding 99% of the time.
      A pair is doable but comes with risk. The male can over apply himself to the female and wear her down until she dies.
      That's why 3 usually works best, 1 male 2 females. Everything is shared around and balanced out.
      Just don't go smaller than a 5 gallon tank (long) They need space for territory and evasion as well.
