  • Episode 002 - The Lone Ranger
Bonus!+ Isolated Score version of the finale at 15:07.
It was panned by critics and bombed at the box office, but is it time to go back to admire what an amazing effort Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger really was? While the film had its faults, it was the well-intentioned attempt at being a big budget tentpole western that make those faults a bit easier to swallow. We will never see a $250 million budgeted western ever again, most likely due to the failure of this film. Which is why it's worth going back and examining all the quirks and personality that Verbinski put into the film. Overall the film is quite enjoyable, and stylized enough to feel an actual director's stamp on it which we never see today. Hopefully this one will find an audience in the coming years, and for that reason we will be looking at the train chase finale for this scene study. The train chase finale is one of the most impressive action set pieces to ever be filmed, and we will break it down from start to finish. The sequence was so ambitious that it also needed a dedicated composer. Geoff Zanelli was tasked at re-arranging and re-structuring the William Tell Overture, while adding all the connective tissue as well as weaving in Hans Zimmer's original themes. It took Geoff 180 days of work on this single sequence. So let's dig in.

I just watched it after becoming intrigued as to why the movie is so poorly received as well as loved, and I can say from my viewing that the film from a technical level is near perfect. The cinematography, the effects, the performances are all fantastic. The biggest fault of the movie is the writing and the pacing. Particularly, the way The Lone Ranger was written was just kinda baffling. He was written as a bumbling idiot and a jerk through most of the film, when it might've been more effective to at least make him somewhat clever. There are scenes where he almost gets himself killed by his stubbornness, when making him more clever might've added to the theme about violence and order. Plus when he abandons Tonto when they're both buried, even if it's for a joke, it's kinda like a punch in the gut to see him abandon Tonto after them bonding the whole film. It felt out of character. Secondly, the way the movie was paced was really iffy. They could've easily shaved a lot of the runtime off the movie without compromising much of the experience.

The Lone Ranger took its time and was incredibly long for a modern day movie especially considering this is a character that most kids now a days wouldn't give two shits about and you'd think they would want to make it a 2 hour explosion filled gun shooting wet dream but the fact that they don't is one of the reasons I love it. This isn't an action packed thrill ride of a movie all the way through because that's never what the Lone Ranger was supposed to be. The original series was always pretty calm and slow going with the occasional action or fight scene here and there and mainly focused on characters or story and I'm very glad this movie kept true to that.

I think this sequence and the Maelstrom sequence from the end of At World's End are two of the greatest set-pieces ever. Gore Verbinski is one of the most underrated directors ever. His action has a signature style and clarity that brings into light that most big budget films today - especially those from the lesser Marvel movies - are severely lacking. We've pushed away the visionaries from our blockbusters for safe gratification. God knows why the critics have such a hate-boner for him but I hope he does get to do another big budget romp one day

While there are a few things that do seriously irk me about this movie (mostly that the Lone Ranger and Tonto don't have that same friendship like the original characters did), I really do appreciate the amount of dedication Gore Verbinski (who had made Rango prior to this, which I thought would be as good as that) had to make the movie look, sound, and feel as good as it did and try to be a fun, action packed, and occasionally harsh Western in the 21st Century, especially when it comes to the full scale steam locomotives.

Refreshing to see a video not dedicated to hating a movie I loved! :)
Also great to hear the film version of that piece, it always bothered me that they'd go through all this trouble and only release a slightly different version on the album. The 'scoring to picture' aspect is what makes film music so unique. I don't want music that is similar to the score, I want the actual score... :P

I've always loved this scene, as a film fan and much more as a train fan (the only downside as a train fan is when Cole breaks, he uses the engine's breaks, not the tender's).
Watching this video made me realize that this was the scene that actually made me want to study filmaking, it's brilliantly done.
Also, this version of William Tell's Overture it's my favourite

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Captain Jack blows up rum barrels to damage the Kraken's arms with one bullet
Pirates of the Caribbean 3: Captain Jack shoots Davy Jones's hand to get the chest with one bullet
Rango: He kills a hawk and destroys a flooding water jug with one bullet
    The Lone Ranger (multiple instances):
The Ranger fires a "warning shot" (not so good according to Tonto)
Tonto is saved with one bullet fired by The Ranger
Tonto disconnects a line of train cars with one bullet

I ran across Hans Zimmer's sound track for this finale on RUclips, and I loved it. So I read some movie reviews, and was discouraged by what was said, until I watched your scene study. So I bought the HD version from Amazon. I absolutely adore this movie! Thanks. What a romp. I've watched it twice already. (I'd watch it again, but I don't want to stop appreciating the color and clarity and panorama and sweetness and romance of this film. It's startling.) The Lone Ranger may not be your cup of tea, but it is a very good movie, and well worth a watch. It really is too bad there will not be a sequel; there is so much more to do here.

Such a weird coincidence. I was looking for some production music for an edit I'm doing and heard the William Tell Overture, and thought to myself 'man, that scene from The Lone Ranger was so incredible (despite not loving the movie). I'll take a look on RUclips for it." Only to find this WONDERFUL breakdown that's not just the scene, but precisely how the score interacts with the visuals to make it so memorable. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

The integrated and magnificent score, also paying homage to classic westerns, yet undeniably the best intertwined to story score I've ever seen in a movie!
My only short fall is I wish they would've done a bit better job on the Rangers outfit and had an Antonio Banderas Zorro cameo!

I think the reason the film was disliked so much is that they made it into a comedy and disrespected the legend of the Lone Ranger making him a seem to be an incompetent idiot. But I agree that the production values and action scenes were superb. A wasted opportunity sadly.

Enjoyed your commentary. Not a big fan of westerns or action movies in general, although I enjoy a well made one. The movie overall was ok, but I could not agree more that the train chase must be one of the best action scenes ever. The fact that it could last so long and still have you totally enrapt and on the edge of your seat was amazing testament enough.. Although I think it is important to give a lot of the credit to Gioachino Rossini, who wrote the overture, and Franz Liszt, whose transcription so popularised it. It is one of the most enduring and evocative pieces of classical music ever. Initially designed to evoke military and battle themes in the William Tell opera, it has since evolved to represent the sound and sense of fast-paced cavalry and horsemanship, which it does unlike any other piece of music that I have ever heard in any genre.. The musicians who scored this movie put it to brilliant use here. Really a masterpiece of music and action cinematography all combined!!

Three years later and I’m still listening and studying this entire sequence out. Everything about it is insane. The fact they used actual scratch built “accurate” train props is phenomenal. And boy does the music slap hard, it really does do massive heavy lifting. Being a huge train nerd it’s an absolute jaw dropping heart pounding highly exciting train chase, and hands down the best train chase in a movie by far. No matter what people say about the movie as a whole, I hope they can at least find even the tiniest appreciation for this train finale. Easily my favorite train scene in a movie even after all the years this film came out. I do believe the train props are around to this day, albeit not in the best condition they should be.

I always see this movie, as if we are watching what the is in the kid's imagination while tonto is telling his tale. Therefore all the crazy over the top and imposible action sequences made all the sense inside the movie. Its a great movie, well directed. And just like Jhon Carter from Mars, it was badly marketed.
