Hello Rotem! Regarding your question: Fender Stratocasters come closer to the tone I want to hear than Gibsons (Les Pauls) do. I mean most of the time. Not all the time for sure. Variety is very much part of the pleasure. But it is the clarity and kind of bell sound i like as well as the attack with Fender. The distortioned sound wins from these qualities too. Rotem, that is great! I have this problem - I can whistle over backing track and be very creative and build a pleasant solo. But when I take my guitar I am stuck in some learned pentatonic scales and mostly playing same stuff over and over without being able to get that tones out of my head. So I think, this is phenomenal exercise, thank you! And your videos looks and sound crisp now, you are making great progress :)

Always preferred fender guitars, with simple unbound maple necks, satin finish (so not a really fancy old jaguar with binding and lacquered neck!) And I like that with a string through body, I feel like the whole thing vibrates nicely with those feature. I have one of those player series mustangs with the p90's atm which I like. I use your technique of using a looper to listen to scale degrees now, it's great, great lessons xX

Best of both worlds between fender strat tones and fat gibson crunch: the SG haha! Honestly was always more of a fan of Fender strats due to their versatility and sound but always wanted to have a more vintage/full sound (ie less single coil -y) which is why I tried out the ‘61 std. SG. Immediately fell in love. Playing at the lower volumes with med-hi tone allows me to reach strat like sounds as well. It’s honestly great. However I’ll still say that I’m going to get a strat someday for sure haha! Love your vids, from France
Fender vs gibson is mostly a matter of scale and pickups. Fender: 25.5" and single coils and Gibson 24.75" and humbuckers. I like both, but my fav would be a long scale with humbuckers. I still play an old Yamaha Pacifica Mike Stern model (a tele with humbuckers) that does exactly this.
They are both pretty good, even though I gravitate more towards Fender. They do feel more organic somehow. Crazy, how these first versions of electric guitar were so on the money..
I love Fenders, I have two strats and a tele. I really like to modify my guitars so being able to remove the necks on my Fenders is a big plus. Fenders just feel nicely balanced in my hands and I much prefer their looks over Gibsons.
Fender. I like the way they sound, I like the way they feel in my hands. I like that they are easy to set up, maintain and fix. I like that the head stock doesn't snap off. I like the fact that they are not so expensive. I like the fact that they were the original solid body and that they have not essentially changed since 1950.
Thank you for this valuable lesson. Singing and interacting with the guitar really enhanced my progress. E.g. playing decending cords C-, B-, Bb- ... and singing ascending notes, C, C#, Db and listen to the relation of the sung note to the cord vice versa. P.S.: Only guys watching your channel?
I think the pattern on your sweater matches very nicely with that tremolo sound you're using..! I got a PRS: nice affordable and versatile multitool for somebody of my level. Fender-ish feel and split-able humbuckers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Over 50 years of playing and owning many guitars I realize I only really needed 2 electric guitars. So around 25 years ago I decided to scale down my guitars to one with single coils and one with humbuckers. For me personally as I don’t play anything heavy than blues rock I decided on getting Custom Shop guitars from each respective manufacturer. A Fender Stratocaster (62 sunburst) Gibson ES355 (60 with Bigsby) each with original spec build components etc. and low to mid output pickups. Both guitars I dreamed of owning when I was a young player as my heroes of those times played them. It was hard to sell guitars I had for many years but I needed to raise the funds to get these two. Yes to many original vintage guitars may be an option if you have the funds and should be respected if one chooses this path. I have owned vintage guitars and amps some good, some not so. For me it was to have a new guitar for a gone era that I could play and know each the history of each little scratch, dent and wear mark. It was a dream and an investment I will never regret. I am old now, play a lot slower, but each day I play and admire these guitars as if I were 18 years old again. I can only suggest to anyone, go with what you really want and dream for, work hard, enjoy life and get your dream guitar before you can no longer dream at all.
I like Fender. I used to play a hand made Mason guitar. Neck straight through the body. Wonderful. One day I broke it. 😢 My teacher, Iain Scott, advised to go out and play every Strat until I found one I liked because then, no matter where I was in the world, in an emergency I could get another Strat for a gig or session.
I don’t own an actual Gibson, but I LOVE my Heritage 575, which was essentially Gibson craftsman making a Gibson 175 after Gibson left town. Also love my Guild Starfite, which more Gibson-ish than Fender. תודה רבה.
I like the simplicity of Fenders in the way they function eg 1 master volume. I prefer the 6 in line tuners. I like that I can put a Tele or Strat into a soft case and not worry about the headstock snapping off. I’ve never liked the Gibson dual volume wiring. By the way…Great video!
It has been a love hate relationship with Fender Stratocaster for me. Each types of guitar can be a beast of their own. However, after modifying my middle of the road guitar over the years (Filtertron bridge + blender pod being the recent change) and the years of playing the same instrument, it became a beast I’m the most comfortable with. Now theres 99% love..and the 1% is when I see others with much prettier looking guitars that I cannot afford
Thank you for that great advice! I have a GIbson, but I see the value and difference of a Fender. They really are equal and compliment each other. I think a Fender is a little more versatile in that it can handle more styles and sounds, but Gibson has more character and punch - especially good for blues.

I prefer Fender guitars! I used to play Gibson, but since I played a Telecaster I really liked the sound and the fact that is a very light and confortable instrument compared to Les Paul's and other models. From my point of view the Gibson SG, it's a great instrument with a very good sound and it's very similar to my Tele talking about weight and feel.
Question: When you have changes going by lets just say a simple progression that is i-7 to IV7 do you hear the IV7 chord as fa, la, do, me? or do you change your solfege / key to have the root of the IV7 chord to be do?
I think I answered my own question... I just watched your video on 2 5 1's and when you where singing your ideas over a D-7 G7 C and you were singing the scale degrees of the 2 chord as re fa la do. As long as your moving do around....
Changes can get weird. You an capture its essence playing on just chord tones, passing notes in the key. But musical phrases on their own can be sustained, even if it doesn't exactly match the changes. And really since anything that's sounds good is what works out, you can find phrases to are unique and interesting developments for a song beyond theory.
Thanks for the wonderful advice. I love the Gibson L5, even though it is well outside of my price range (or what I am willing to pay for a guitar at my level of playing). But that is a totally different animal than the other guitars I own atm. I love my Japanese Fender Strat Aerodyne, which is exceptionally good quality and I picked it up for a steal which always makes me happy. More recently I bought a Fender Player Duo Sonic HS, a phenomenal guitar at a great price, but it was appropriated by my 15 y.o. son, who also seems to love it very much (and plays it much better than I can, lol). So I had to buy a Player Mustang P90 instead. Very versatile, beautiful sound, lovely light weight but amazing sustain. So I guess Fender. On the other hand, I have owned Ibanez AS153 and my son plays a very affordable Silvertone reissue 1449 with lipsticks, which in his hands, sounds amazing. Ultimately it is down to what you love and how you play. A great player can sound good on a mediocre instrument.

I tend towards Fenders, though most are really G&Ls. Mainly tele style, including two setnecks. Also have a couple PRSs and a Gretsch for diversity. My sole Gibson is an Epiphone Dot. Very nice guitar.

i’m definitely more of a fender fanboy myself. i work in a guitar shop & i’ve picked up a lot of fenders & gibsons, and when speaking specifically about overall quality, (even though they’ve been dropping the ball lately) fender usually pumps out a lot more quality guitars. i like the size & feel of fender necks; i feel like there’s more room for my hand while playing, whereas i always feel like the neck is in the way or too thick with a gibson. i might be biased cause ive only owned two epiphone/gibson guitars, while i currently own like, four strats lol.
My problem with ear training and transcribing is that I'm always unsure if it's right, if I'm even singing the correct note, pitch I'm playing or if the transcription is correct and no way to verify for sure other than feel. Sometimes I get to a point where 90% of the transcription feels right but two or three notes just feel off and I can't figure those out. It sure can get frustrating, sorry for the rant.
I like fender more than Gibson… but it’s more like I like strats more than gibsons. Strats are just lighter and more comfortable and kind of sound how I want my guitar to sound like a lot. BUT I don’t care for telecasters and all cause they are less comfortable. Gibsons I find quite heavy and if we are talking les Paul they have no double cut. Also most gibsons are himbuckers. And I like humbuckers but that’s when I want to play more aggressive. I guess this is we’re i say I like PRS lol. And now whoever is reading this comment won’t take me seriously🤣

Hey Rotem, I have a question... I know you use fixed do for solfège. Is this superior to moveable do? I feel like moveable do gives me more perspective to the intervals and it comes more natural to me to think in moveable do. Do you advise to learn fixed or should I keep working to master moveable and then start with fixed later on?
This is just what I need... My first electric was a PRS SE 245. I played it and a few Les Pauls and I just liked it better. Nowadays I mostly grab my Strat; either the Fender or the one I built which is a semi-hollow hard-tail. I love the that last one because it's so light, it sings, and I built it... Anyhow, something about the necks and the contours on the Strat plus the variety of tones you can get out of them, my Fender is an HSS and the one I built is an SSS... What you're playing looks and sounds very cool, are those active pickups? I've never played any active pickup guitar.
Rotem, do you think in movable do (root notes & scale degrees) when you improvise? or do you think of all the actual note names (fixed do) during improvisation?
What pedal are you using go create the drone Rotem? Every looper I've tried creates a short gap before repeating the chord. Thanks very much for helping if you have time 👍
I don't know what Rotem uses but there is a pedal called the freeze that does this. There is another that looks like a piano sustain pedal that does this called the game changer.
I've always had a Fender Stratocaster (once I had a Jazzmaster) because everyone that inspired me played one. Gibson has always been too expensive to acquire but sounds great too; I mean how amazing would it be to have a Firebird or 335?
Fender more so than Gibby, but I really think there is a whole world of guitars to explore. My favorite guitars are Eastman and EBMM these days. I am quite tired of the traditionalist mentality among musicians of many stripes. Why do so many jazz people need an arch top running into an amp that sounds like it has a blanket over it? Afraid of treble? Ted Greene had a great sound, and played a Tele! Classical guitar MUST be played exactly as written on nylon/gut or you won’t get a molecule of respect from that crowd. How about PLAYING music, operative word being”play”. It’s no wonder genres die, they start fresh and wind up with millions of clones doing exactly the same thing. Look at jazz, blues and rock. All on life support at best. I mean if someone likes being a carbon copy of famous person x, then great I suppose, but don’t expect to add to the art form. /RANT

When I was a teen, everyone was either rock and roll or country music, my boss at the music store was a big band jazz clarinetist in his day, nothing like those scenes exists now anywhere but giant cities. I used to be able to get a gig anywhere at any time. This just isn’t the case anymore.

I think I answered my own question... I just watched your video on 2 5 1's and when you where singing your ideas over a D-7 G7 C and you were singing the scale degrees of the 2 chord as re fa la do. As long as your moving do around....
Changes can get weird. You an capture its essence playing on just chord tones, passing notes in the key. But musical phrases on their own can be sustained, even if it doesn't exactly match the changes. And really since anything that's sounds good is what works out, you can find phrases to are unique and interesting developments for a song beyond theory.

Thanks for the wonderful advice. I love the Gibson L5, even though it is well outside of my price range (or what I am willing to pay for a guitar at my level of playing). But that is a totally different animal than the other guitars I own atm. I love my Japanese Fender Strat Aerodyne, which is exceptionally good quality and I picked it up for a steal which always makes me happy. More recently I bought a Fender Player Duo Sonic HS, a phenomenal guitar at a great price, but it was appropriated by my 15 y.o. son, who also seems to love it very much (and plays it much better than I can, lol). So I had to buy a Player Mustang P90 instead. Very versatile, beautiful sound, lovely light weight but amazing sustain. So I guess Fender. On the other hand, I have owned Ibanez AS153 and my son plays a very affordable Silvertone reissue 1449 with lipsticks, which in his hands, sounds amazing. Ultimately it is down to what you love and how you play. A great player can sound good on a mediocre instrument.

I tend towards Fenders, though most are really G&Ls. Mainly tele style, including two setnecks. Also have a couple PRSs and a Gretsch for diversity. My sole Gibson is an Epiphone Dot. Very nice guitar.

i’m definitely more of a fender fanboy myself. i work in a guitar shop & i’ve picked up a lot of fenders & gibsons, and when speaking specifically about overall quality, (even though they’ve been dropping the ball lately) fender usually pumps out a lot more quality guitars. i like the size & feel of fender necks; i feel like there’s more room for my hand while playing, whereas i always feel like the neck is in the way or too thick with a gibson.
i might be biased cause ive only owned two epiphone/gibson guitars, while i currently own like, four strats lol.

My problem with ear training and transcribing is that I'm always unsure if it's right, if I'm even singing the correct note, pitch I'm playing or if the transcription is correct and no way to verify for sure other than feel. Sometimes I get to a point where 90% of the transcription feels right but two or three notes just feel off and I can't figure those out. It sure can get frustrating, sorry for the rant.
I like fender more than Gibson… but it’s more like I like strats more than gibsons. Strats are just lighter and more comfortable and kind of sound how I want my guitar to sound like a lot. BUT I don’t care for telecasters and all cause they are less comfortable. Gibsons I find quite heavy and if we are talking les Paul they have no double cut. Also most gibsons are himbuckers. And I like humbuckers but that’s when I want to play more aggressive.
I guess this is we’re i say I like PRS lol. And now whoever is reading this comment won’t take me seriously🤣

Hey Rotem, I have a question... I know you use fixed do for solfège. Is this superior to moveable do? I feel like moveable do gives me more perspective to the intervals and it comes more natural to me to think in moveable do. Do you advise to learn fixed or should I keep working to master moveable and then start with fixed later on?
I stay away rom fender and gibson....Jackson(although fender bought the brand) and PRS are my choice.

This is just what I need... My first electric was a PRS SE 245. I played it and a few Les Pauls and I just liked it better. Nowadays I mostly grab my Strat; either the Fender or the one I built which is a semi-hollow hard-tail. I love the that last one because it's so light, it sings, and I built it... Anyhow, something about the necks and the contours on the Strat plus the variety of tones you can get out of them, my Fender is an HSS and the one I built is an SSS... What you're playing looks and sounds very cool, are those active pickups? I've never played any active pickup guitar.
They are not active..
I definitely prefer Fender over Gibson because that's the sound of my favorite guitarists and it kind of feels like home.

What pedal are you using go create the drone Rotem? Every looper I've tried creates a short gap before repeating the chord. Thanks very much for helping if you have time 👍
I don't know what Rotem uses but there is a pedal called the freeze that does this. There is another that looks like a piano sustain pedal that does this called the game changer.
We can also play every phrase we sing all over the neck in all possible combinations

I've always had a Fender Stratocaster (once I had a Jazzmaster) because everyone that inspired me played one. Gibson has always been too expensive to acquire but sounds great too; I mean how amazing would it be to have a Firebird or 335?

Fender more so than Gibby, but I really think there is a whole world of guitars to explore. My favorite guitars are Eastman and EBMM these days. I am quite tired of the traditionalist mentality among musicians of many stripes. Why do so many jazz people need an arch top running into an amp that sounds like it has a blanket over it? Afraid of treble? Ted Greene had a great sound, and played a Tele! Classical guitar MUST be played exactly as written on nylon/gut or you won’t get a molecule of respect from that crowd. How about PLAYING music, operative word being”play”. It’s no wonder genres die, they start fresh and wind up with millions of clones doing exactly the same thing. Look at jazz, blues and rock. All on life support at best. I mean if someone likes being a carbon copy of famous person x, then great I suppose, but don’t expect to add to the art form. /RANT
I feel jazz rock & blues are alive! I feel there's a lot of great things happening w all those styles tbh!

When I was a teen, everyone was either rock and roll or country music, my boss at the music store was a big band jazz clarinetist in his day, nothing like those scenes exists now anywhere but giant cities. I used to be able to get a gig anywhere at any time. This just isn’t the case anymore.
