Michael Oliver has it in for both UTD and Liverpool - He received gifts (including first class travel/accommodation) from from the owners of Man City for officiating low level matches in the Middle East. This was such a conflict of interest that the PGMOL have now banned the practise. Man City owners will have to find more creative ways to influence refs as they are the loophole masters with more lawyers than Mr Burns. Michael Oliver should be investigated also as there is plenty of evidence of his bias against City rivals

Refs need to apply some common sense to their interpretation of the rules. To give a penalty for hand ball the ref should be certain that the player deliberately positioned or moved his arms with a view to blocking a shot.
We're talking milliseconds between the Liverpool player heading the ball and the ball hitting De Ligt's arm. A bit of common sense would tell you that the defender had no time to metally process the idea putting out an arm to block the shot. So clearly accidental, but of course the ref gets a slow motion clip which i might add he only looked at once and gave the penalty within seconds. How did the ref have time to apply common sense? Seems like a premeditated decision.

The current rule forces defenders to either keep their balance during action with their hands literally on their backs, or just move their bodies naturally while just praying the ball doesn't deflect onto their arm. I think it should only be a handball if the defender had any chance to move his arm out of the way. In this case he clearly did not, so it shouldn't be a pen.

"1 yard away , where is his hand meant to go in that amount of time ."... TAA's cross is floated in via his left foot, it's coming diagonally... he has all that time to react and position himself....he's coming off his man (Nunez) to get tight to MacCallister... so there is absolutely no way he should be coming forward doing jumping jacks/the mexican wave.. in that situation is there. During all this, he's never within a yard of any liverpool player... so he had an eternity to make a decision, arrived late, and then reacts by throwing his arms in the air despite knowing Mac Callister was always going to win that header ahead of him... that's the context here. So going back to your question, he can do what ever he wants.. a yard in this situation is actually quite a lot given the trajectory of the cross, there's no excuses for his arms to be above his head... like why?

This is also Oliver the man that awards pens and red cards to everyone, except City it seems. I mean the guy booked McGuire for a clean tackle where he clearly plays the ball and not the man, Oliver was right on top of it & still booked the guy. He’s an absolute joke of a ref, but when something hits a hand the question is asked but you don’t always get consistency. How many decisions at full speed have been overturned because the ref has looked at it in super slow motion which makes it look far worse than it actually was. I didn’t have to even see the hand ball, as soon as they said Oliver was going to the screen I said “pen”, if you give him a chance to make the decision for a pen then he will make it. It’s the age old intent thing, did a player by putting his hand up intend to deflect the ball to get an advantage? Or was it the brain reacting in a nano second to protect the face etc? If it was an instinctual reaction of self protection then by definition there is no intent.
One thing is for sure, VAR has caused more debate and controversies in its relatively short life than the decades before it existed, or at least it feels that way. And we still get poor decisions so it isn’t really fit for purpose. It was supposed to be quick, accurate & consistent to reduce human error, nah.

Unless we want footballers to look like Irish traditional dancers this concept of “unnatural positions” will always cause controversy. The biggest problem I see with the referees is that unlike cricket, the referees have little or no experience of actually playing at the highest level and therefore have no insight, only a rule book to follow and committees to answer to.

Please review the Wolves v Forrest game and the 'handball' not given and compare it with this. The referee and VAR was a disgrace. Then look at the Nunez foul, he should have received a straight red. He could have broke De Ligts jaw. The referee and VAR should be ashamed....

    From FA law 12:
Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by committing a non-deliberate handball offence and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned.
    It was nailed on!

I can count several times when other players done the same thing, but no penalties were given specifically because there was no time to react. I get his arm was up unnaturally but c’mon. You can’t pick and choose when to give a penalty in those situations. Michael Oliver couldn’t have pointed to that spot quick enough.

The only unnatural movement of your arm is a break or dislocation. Otherwise it can naturally move in any direction it is capable of doing. The word “unnatural position” needs to be removed from the explanation of handball because it is used in the wrong context.

I have been watching football nearly 40 years, that is a penalty every day of the week. The job of the referee is not to interpret the intention of the player. All they have to judge is: was the hand in unnatural position or not. If the hands were on the sides and the ball hit them with speed then obviously you could make the case, but up that high? No chance!
