      Oh that's a really good idea! I was thinking about a usecase besides some niche head up displays which don't require don't even require big screen and couldn't really think of something. But this with a webcam behind it would be great.Not just for video call but also for your typical Let's Plays and such. Like I'm usually rather close to my screen and a webcam would have to be quite on the side showing me with quite an angle which would look stupid.

It'd be like a video game HUD in your car for displaying things like MPH, gas, RPM, radio controls, etc. It could even just be a tiny portion at the bottom of the windshield for a basic level, then when it develops more the entire windshield and have more advanced utilization like alerting the driver to hazards they may not notice.

    You know what idea first came to mind for me?
    Windshields in cars.
    But my reason probably wouldn't work like I was thinking. I was thinking it could work with some sort of tracking system to display little gray "filters" over everyone's headlights at night so I'm not always being blinded by LEDs, in which the L seems to stand for LASER.
    But more realistically, this would make for a badass HUD in just about any vehicle. Speedometer, current gear, fuel level, battery level(s), etc.. Even better, an "on-road GPS" like what's shown in some video games could draw a colored line to follow so you don't have to glance at your phone all the time.
    Have a car-launched camera drone that'll give you a bird's eye view when driving through a blind corner, drone just catches up and docks itself back into/onto the car.
    Higher resolution, larger display for backup cameras, rendered right on the windshield.
    Forget touchscreens... get some eye-tracking tech involved to look at and change settings and controls without really taking your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel.
    Display critical alerts like "Ice Possible", "Emergency Vehicle Approaching" and indicating from which direction, have censors on the car that can detect approaching bodies and indicating on-screen (for Brits) or on-shield (for us Americans) where they are in relation to the vehicle, etc..
    Pop-up info such as the name/number of incoming calls and texts, reminders, changing weather conditions...
    Then again, Facebook will probably just hijack the damn thing and start showing virtual billboards, tracking your eyes to see which ones your eyes linger on, then shoving more of that type of ad down your throat. As they do.

    Possible usage for this is to apply a curved version of transparent screens to motorbike helmet visors to allow the rider to have their speedometer in constant view, as well as a camera in the back of their helmet to allow them to see behind them without having to take their eyes of off the road.
    There would be a little box at the top of the visor, still in your peripheral vision but out of focus allowing you to see the road with no obstruction, kind of like what you see in racing games. The HUD mirror won't really be in focus unless you look at it and of course you won't know what specifically is behind you, but at the very least at least you'll be able to know if something *is* behind you or not without having to look at the HUD mirror or the side mirrors of the bike.
    This would allow the need for riders to look away from the road, as everytime you look away from the road to take a quick glance at your speedometer or your phone for your navigation you risk getting into an accident.
    You could also have navigation arrows, similar to the racing lines that you get in games, eliminating the need for you to look at your phone which allows you to keep your focus on the road and thus be more aware and safer. It also means that you probably won't miss a turn because you didn't understand the layout of the map on your phone.
    And going back to the racing lines; when coming to a traffic light, the HUD can tell you when to brake and how hard to brake in order to properly stop at the light.

      @Manganization 5 лет назад +18

      Helmet visors are plastic though. Making it glass would be a safety hazard. So unless it can be done using plastic materials, or something safer then it wouldn't be worth the hassle. There's also the issue of the stuff being animated on your visor to potentially distract you from the road, leading to more accidents.

    • @bumblbee9154
      @bumblbee9154 5 лет назад +4

      @@Manganization
      Very True, I was thinking that the screen could be on the inside of the plastic visor.
      If there is to be HUD for the visor it would have to be the bare minimum to minimize potential distractions.
      Then again, anything on the visor is a distraction so perhaps not having anything is safer and just keeping everything on the cockpit of the bike is better.
      I think things like these need to go through testing so we can see the impact it can have on riders.

    That's awesome. Using the polarisation method, potentially having smart windows could be amazing. For the smart mirrors, using a transparent display would be awesome, especially if you can shift how transparent it is, since it would make displayed content much easier to actually see in harsher visibility. Adding displays like this to airplanes to give pilots real-time assistive information. Same with cars, having your gps project an arrow onto the road ahead of you for navigation (like WatchDogs GPS Navigations) would be amazing.
    In houses, instead of having an empty wall to hang a large TV, you could have a huge wall with a window ... that becomes your freaking television. Just imagine the aesthetic that would have! The room is super open and minimal, then the lights get killed, the window(s) become (a) screen(s), and it's suddenly a game room (add some responsive RGB lighting and surround sound, and you have a killer movie room)!

They could even use something to determine who you are because they've already connected your face to your membership card within their store. They could then follow up with you and send a push notification to your phone right after you've past by their display. Welp this is the future we'll live in RIP D:

    A screen like this would be awesome for a dedicated video conferencing screen because you could place the camera behind the screen rather than on top or bottom, giving the viewer the illusion that they are making eye contact.
    So instead of not having a back like the one in this video, there would be a cavity where one (or multiple) cameras were placed. This would make the screen look like a normal LED panel when on, and allow the user to look directly at the video feed and into the cameras behind the panel.

    Working at a PC retailer, this would be really helpful if used as the windows for the store. Products in the windows would have details and text floating above them with prices and specials. As well, touch screen functionality allowing customers to select options, browse colors or just get some extra info on a product. All while window shopping

Possibly some cameras so it can track you and/or one of those things that tracks touch without actually being on the display like those things your teacher would use to write stuff on the projector.

    Thats cool. They should use it as a window in the living room with a electrochromic (smart glass) window behind it (which you can tint electronically). So if you dont tint the back glass layer you have a nice window and if you tint the electrochromic glass you have a great oled tv.

      Rob Lambert - The original comment was talking about that already, it’s electrochromic glass. The commenter thought it would be a good idea to combine the new TV with an electrochromic window so that you can see the tv clearly by tinting the window, or having the tv off so you can see outside

    • @Jehty_
      @Jehty_ 5 лет назад

      I don't think that opaque auto tinting glass exist. I only know about translucent glass.
      The sun would still be able to shine threw the window and display. I would use an electric roller shutter. Would take a bit longer, but looks probably much better.

      @Noah Hastings yah, I personally don't thin that idea is very practicle, it's cool in like a cyberpunk movie or something, but in reality no one wants some one potentially watching them while they watch tv. Also what about putting decorations on your window, like some people like to do, or in cold areas where some people use storm windowing in the winter, and that's another question, how would it react to extreme cold.

    If it had some camera or sensor tech they make for some displays for drawing, you could draw whatever reference is behind the TV,
    Benefit: tilting head to see edges you're drawing over to judge line thickness; different light properties, so you wouldn't fight blending background layers with foreground layers as you would in a drawing program

    I think a lot of the high contrast visibility was aided by the black backdrop behind the TV. When viewing the image from an angle (so you could see the white wall) the picture on the screen is basically invisible.
