  • Would you rather be in the field? That's probably where you'd find Jerry Smith of Ohio. Jerry uses his 1960 Case 930 Diesel for field work in the spring and fall. The tractor can do about 80 horsepower and was rated to pull a six bottom plow. The 930 Diesel was meant for heavy tillage work and that's just what Jerry uses it for. My grandpa was a Bird Colonel in the army during WWII when he designed & invited a new clutch for the Army Tanks that was much better than the original. It was a hydraulic clutch. He sold his patent after the war to CASE Tractor Co.
I have a 1960 Case 801b Tractor with his hydraulic clutch design, and have never had a problem with anything on this all original tractor in the 30 years that I've owned and worked it. I'm really proud of my grandpa and I miss him very much. 🤠👍

All old tractors were the best tractors. It's such a shame that the old fashioned tractors aren't still being made. Thanks so so much for this video and God blessed you. Your such a wonderful man and I love you forever and ever amen 😅

Used my Dad's Case 900 (1959) on my property for a couple years. Loved to take it through my woods while sitting on the fender while in 1st gear...idled down it would just crawl. Me on one fender and a friend on the other...beer in one hand and foot on the steering wheel. Best time was a sunny day in the fall and maple leaves all orange and yellow.

I love your tractor. My dad bought one new at Christmas, 1962. It had the fuel tank behind the seat and the breather at the front of the hood. I have never heard anything as smooth as the sound of these tractors. Yours brings back great memories for me. A neighbour bought ours before my dad passed. I still get to drive it, occasionally.

We used this tractor and a Model LA and Model L..and farmed 1500 acres in Kingman,Ks..from 1950 - 2008...these tractors were still running and working when I left the farm for a better paying lifestyle. Those were really great days...I miss them terribly too...but they are gone...in the Past to never return. RIP..Dad...

Great to see a vintage tractor pulling the size plow it was intended to handle. I grew up on a Western style tractor, and never understood why they weren't more popular in the mid-west. But it might be time to do a bit of paint touch up on that old plow.

I will never forget learning to drive on a 930, with a hand clutch, we put a piece of copper pipe on the exhaust to get the sound up higher. My winter coat on, grandpa big coat over top and a horse blanket on the legs. Rain, hail dust where the test of time on these tractors. They also at lower rpm at the time than other tractors, but I’m still deaf!

Scoop Yall Wouldn't a heat house been a little more efficient , I thought I was tough till I spread manure in the open at 10deg f then my uncle got up in the rafters and came down with one , said he had been saving it for just such an occasion.

    • @scoopyall2996
      @scoopyall2996 6 лет назад +1

Becky Watt we had one for the case 830, but never on the case 930, in the winter we had a little 9n ford to haul out manure, Manitoba, Canada with lots days at -35-40 f, we where tougher maybe but had big wool sweaters under our bean jackets or we called them smocks, not sure if that right spelling.

Scoop Yall Been there ,done that .But I used to snowmobile, trap, hunt ,icefish , when I was in school , we would load manure with the backhoe because it was so heavy, and the bucket was so strong , but I will never forget the sweat freezing on the side of my face. This is the wife's computer, she's not quite that tough.

Nice tractor. They made a big horse shoe shaped weight to bolt on the front, this guy should look for one of those. Case designed it to look like part of the frame.
Grew up with a 1030 wheatland. 38 rears, 11x16 fronts, fluid in all 4 of them. Front weight, giant donut weights inside the rear wheels which were big cast pieces themselves. PTO, dual hyd., 3 point, factory cab(not that hideous one, ours was a late 1030 with the nice one). That thing would PULL. And it was efficient for its size.
Case made excellent designs, and many of them were not widespread across the industry. The chain drive goes back to pre-war designs. I believe they dropped it for the updated Comfort King series in the 60's. With the updated 930 and the 1030 I think it wasn;t feasible anymore. But it is true about efficiency, and they just run smooth and quiet that way. I had an SC for a while that had the chain drive.
Case had the old Eagle hitch design, their narrow front tractors had a big steering arm on the front with the steering gear box way back by the operator, which took all the jerking motion out of the operators hands from bumps in the field compared to IH or JD design. Case took care of it's customers too, My Grandpa had an old C and Case actually made a PTO refit kit for that tractor years after the fact, it wasn't live but the idea they would engineer a retrofit for a tractor that was a decade old from before 540 PTO was invented says a lot.
The merge with David Brown was a good fit for Case. The merge with IH wasn't probably really needed, but it was required financially for both companies when it happened due to how things were at that time.
Those old tractors from the 60's and into the 70's IMO were the golden age of equipment and farming, back when you made as much money as work you put into it and things were a bit more simple and even maybe a bit fun if you didn't mind working. Factory farms nowdays have lost their soul.

My family always farmed with cases. We usually had 4-5 930`s in the field at the same time pulling 15 ft, sweeps. you could get over a lot of acres in a day. My dad always liked hopping them up a bit. The one I drove had 30 thousand over size pistons and sleeves. Had the pump turned up to around 2300 rpm. Usually never farmed at that high rpm but sure was nice when you needed a little extra. I expect it would make around 120hp.One year our county had a friendly tractor pull. i took it right out of the field all dirty and grungy looking. I beat a new john deere 4020 with it and came home with the first place trophy. I started out at about half throttle and just kept bumping it up. By the time i got to it`s 2300 rpm it was really talking to you. still have a couple of them.

I drove a 930 square finder case on the farm I think it ruined my hearing in my left ear sitting sideways in the seat.

That 930 would stop dead in its tracks, dropping a 6bottom plow in our Missouri river bottom gumbo.
    Nice tractor anyway.

It wasnt meant to plow in the river...bottom...but ours pulled a 6 bottom plow just fine in good dark ground..in 3 rd gear too...930 Comfort King...Diesel...1968was the last yr I got to plow with it..went to Vietnam...

      Joe Blow possibly a 1250 or 1700 Steiger, Versatile 118,125,or 145. Maybe a Wagner WA-6?

We couldn't pull 6 consistently either with our 930 diesel. It did OK on lighter ground but 85 hp was not enough for low ground, had to switch to 5 bottom 16". Later added M&W turbo and then we had the power, but cooling and clutch were not up to the job. Traded it for a 1030 when those were available. Previously had a 400 and 800 diesel, still have the 400. Ended up with a 1175 and 2470, but that was the last of the Case tractors for us, too many problems.

i didnt understand the airplane corollary.. is it a case engine or just a chain drive

Looks like a chain drive, I think that was a small block Chevy V-8 engine.

The 990 is very close to a 930, but they feel more like Ford or Fergusson.

There is NO way, the efficiency of chain vs gear drive...is 98% vs 60% NO WAY !
If someone can prove otherwise, I'll change my 'Epicyclic Gear' emblem to a chain and sprockets !!!
