That's how you know someone can really sing. She just belted out the song like it was nothing. No lip-synching or studio equipment, just raw talent and a beautiful voice.
Had the honor and pleasure of meeting her She was so warm and kind to My mom and I. She even invited us to a party. That few moments of meeting her will never leave me❤
Pure magic. Phyllls is still missed and it is a crime that Lonnie hasn't recorded in decades.Unfortunately, genuine musical talent is not always a prerequisite for a contract these days.
DC from the chi: Phyllis was probably one of the top Sangers not singer's of all time, just pure skills and a natural gift in which she knew she had and was able to articulate it in a way that no one has been able to match since. After watching the RUclips interviews I fell in love with the lady and I'm not that kind of a man to follow people like that but man after listening to her speak she was everyday people always kept 100 before the term 100 was invented. A true sista in every since of the word, I put her in the Billie Holiday,Nina Simone, Patti Labelle, category and so on but truly one of the greatest of all time who died of a broken heart. I miss you baby cause you know how to love me!
It's no way you can give that much of yourself and sing about that much pain and not internalize a part of that pain . My prayer is that Pepper found the peace in death that alluded her in life. Thanks for posting.
Obsession is my favorite song by Phyllis Hyman song! Very underrated classic! She’s still loved all over the globe! Incomparable & legendary chanteuse!
Phyllis was So deep She’d be one year older than me now I’m 71. I feel her pain deeply. May she be so happy & her soul has found peace in Eternity. Thank you For sharing your talent & beauty inside & out Phyllis. Until we meet again... “Angel Bella”...🎵🎹🌹 🌟🎤❤️
Phyllis was before my time but I learned so much about her and as an artist I studied her voice and artistry. She was also very classy reminds me a lot of my grandma talk curvy and beautiful 😍
When ever I see a list of the best singers and Phyllis is not on that list, it just becomes a popularity list, not a talent list. She was not joking about the shoes. Once she kicks them off, hold on to your heart. One of the best live singers I ever saw. Lonnie is in a very small class of individuals who created music that didn't exist before. Saw him back in the earky 80's with Roy Ayers and Tom Browne. The three of them took fazz fusion to another level. Like Lonnie, Roy's music was thought provoking and you could also get your grove on. Tom's, "Funkin For Jamaica", was and is one of the most recognized songs by Funk, Jazz and RnB fans. There are so many musical layers to that song, it's almost a shame to label it by any one genre. The 70's had some Great music changing Artist in it, that covered the spectrum of all music. RIP Phyllis.
Of all the female artists I have loved and admired, Ms. Hyman, will always remind me of Billie Holiday. As an artist and the tragedy of her life and death.
I just love this woman and I want everybody to know just how much I do love her. For as long as Phyllis has been around, that's how long I have been listening to her and also being a great fan of hers. I will always remember you Phyllis, and wish you were still here with us, but in my hear you shall always be there. A very dedicated fan for life. Beautiful, talented. and oh, such an angelic voice. RIP, and I hope you get the long waited for rest and love you have been looking for all your life. LOve you always.
omg this kills me 2 watch cuz she talks about the drug analogy in "obsession" which mirrored her real life and the fact that she was engaged im like dang wat happend w/that but I love her in interviews cuz she was so funny...thank u lowando 4 sharing this
she was down to earth and real..cant imagine anyone breaking a heart like hers..wish she was still here to bring back love from all the hate in the world now.
Thanks for this post. I've seen this before but I don't know if it was RUclips. PH was in her element - on point, introspective, and seemingly sober. I love her and miss her dearly.
Miss Janae89Vidz, I AGREE (smile), I Miss that era of BET; When BET was the network to watch. I like it now,but back then I used to stay up all nite watching Video Soul and Video Vibrations. When my Poop used to record the music videos(smile) so we could watch them later(smile).
Thank you lowando for sharing your videos. More people can now enjoy her talents who were not able to see her when she was alive. Truly Appreciated. :) Rest In Peace Ms. Phyllis.
Oooh man I only started listen to her music in early 2000 ,and I'm young person but it feels like I was there in her prime time ooh man what a voice beautiful person inside out .
Not to burst your bubble, but the interviewer is the famous Donnie Simpson from BET on Video Soul and the pianist is Lonnie Liston Smith, just making it right, so the right credit goes to the right people, thank u for making this available, may Phyllis always R.I.H. nd so dearly missed, love u a fan ♡♡♡
God Bless Phyllis Hyman it was today in 1995 one of the greatest vocalists of all time Passed. She is missed on this day and every day R.I.P the legend Phyllis Hyman.
Like most true entertainers she became for me bigger in death than in life I really wish that this beautiful statuesque classy lady could found some kind of security in her love life if she could have had happiness in and true love in her personal life i truely believe ahe would still be here I believe this Lovely black queen died from lonliness Listen to her last recording I refuse to be lonely it is so heart felt from her soul . RIP queen
@stanleyballard I know she was married in the early 80s,but this is after that marraige had ended. She talks about being engaged but she never says who she was engaged to.I never heard about her and Christopher Williams, thats a shock to me.. (wow)
definitely a diva that created her OWN style, has legendary music, larger than life personality, articulate, beautiful, talented.. all of that is DIVA. Besides if you're REALLY good friends with Patti Labelle.. You're a diva. ijs
I'm Jealous of any and errabody who got to hear her live, got to meet her! Ms. Hyman is a Goddess! Goddesses bless us with their presence, then move on to the next dimension.

This woman could sing. Notice how she just jumped into the song without any warm up!
Exactly real singers just jump right into it I seen Chaka Howard Hewett Jennifer Hudson Kenny latimore etc.
That's how you know someone can really sing. She just belted out the song like it was nothing. No lip-synching or studio equipment, just raw talent and a beautiful voice.

she a *SANGER* that's for sure. Her interviews are just as captivating as her music.
The musician never gets the credit he deserves. The great Lonnie Liston Smith!!!
She was the greatest. How many can whistle like her? I am country, and I cannot.
She is such a class act. The way she just start singing spontaneously. She's a legend.
It's no way you can give that much of yourself and sing about that much pain and not internalize a part of that pain . My prayer is that Pepper found the peace in death that alluded her in life. Thanks for posting.
Her voice is like Marvin's. Haunting and beautiful
Interesting Comparison !!!
The greatest singer of all time.
Omg that voice. Would've loved the chance to see her live. Of all the artists I've seen perform live, I never got to see her. R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman.
What a memorable interview portraying two icons

I agree
how miss phyllis die?
I literally had the same thought watching this video “holy crap this is the reincarnation of Billie Holiday”
Such a smart and spiritual woman. Too bad she was in a place she couldn't digest her own medicine.
The vocals are slamming. No auto tunes here baby.
Omg I adore everything about her, from talking to singing, just like that so effortlessly, amazing such a powerhouse woman.
Phyllis Hyman had a great voice and I remember watch this show BET video soul when I was in College in the early 90s
Now we got viacom buying up television network so called reality shows
I just love this woman and I want everybody to know just how much I do love her. Queen you are gone but definitely not forgotten 🕊🕊
it's 2016 and Donnie's jacket is STILL fresh as fuck
Damn she was telling alot about what she was going through at the first 25 secs of the video
Unbelievable voice of an angle.
The late "GREAT" Phyllis Hyman 😍
It’s funny she says Roxanne did her makeup and she was literally doing Whitney Houstons makeup at the time too and working for her
I can imagine Prince batting his eyes and saying "Lust Phyllis..." then making his Prince sound.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Truly missed!❤
I miss her light, RIP Phyllis
She Can "SANG"🥀🦋🌼🌳🌺
Is the music Lonnie's playing while Phyllis is taking an actual released piece ??? It's unbelievable
It was epic

The songbird of Steeler Nation...
Star flower by Jean Carne and Lonnie Liston Smith was one of the best song on that album "Love Goddess".
Loved that song too. Got a lot of airplay in Detroit at the time.
