Thanks for the tip on the wooden rolling pin. I won't put it in my dish water anymore. When I was 1st married, my Husbands Grandmother gave me a cloth, pastry blender and a wooden rolling pin. I had no clue what all that was. But as I learned, I loved it. Cloth makes it much easier to roll out dough.
I have a great old recipe for pie crust from my Great Grandma, and she advises adding a splash of vinegar to your cold water. The vinegar evaporates when the crust bakes, making a super flaky crust! I've received nothing but compliments on this.
Thank you for this. The idea of making pie crusts has always intimidated me but you make it look so easy. I make a lovely chicken pot pie, now I won't have to cheat on the crust!
Hi. I'm 4 min into you're video and a sweet little pug walked through you're kitchen. I got a little distracted. I love small dogs. I'm also enjoying the pie crust recipe. I'll try it. Never thought to combine lard and butter, good idea. Karen from Canada.
i'm so glad you use lard!!! my grandmother taught me that and i think it makes the BEST pie crust... i like the tip of freezing it... never thought of that... :-)
So grateful I just recently got a brand new rolling pin, one of the french rolling pins. New Sub Miss V, thank you for teaching how to make a pie crust! 💓 I can remember when my momma would use 2 knives to cut in her butter and crisco to make pie crust. But she never was much of one to instruct in the kitchen.
I love your recipes, you make it look so easy! I may try to make some this weekend to freeze. We have been buying the store bought ones in bulk because it is just easy and ready but if I make them ahead of time and freeze them then I will have a much better pie crust ready to go :) The ones from the store bother our stomachs… Thanks Bev :)
Seen so many versions of this type of pastry and not a single one advised rolling the frozen fat in flour. You just demonstrated so much uncommon sense. Thanks again for your groovy tips.
Aw Bev, you just gave me a recipe for a pie I want to make later this week, since DH is going to go back to shoveling tomorrow and Thursday. Hope your snowfall is better than ours in the Maritimes.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I do the same thing with the dish towel. But pie crust has always kicked my butt! My grandmothers and my Mother can whip up a pie crust in a flash. But it's an art. I'm trying your way now. Thanks again!
Looks great Bev, I do have a tip for your son though. Dollar store soft tooth brushes work wonderfully on a box grater. Up on the outside and down on the inside. You can reach everywhere and get it clean quickly. Also on the rolling pins I have read that if your worried about transfer or germs, just put it in you microwave and nuke it for 20 to 30 seconds after scraping it off. Dont know if thats true or not but it kind of makes sense? Hugs dear
I may just try to make pie dough myself today. I always get hubby to make it because I am too heavy handed and it comes out tough. Sunday we had a 3 lb sirloin tip roast beef and there is just enough beef and a jar of gravy left to make a pie and add a couple veggies to it. Yeah the food basics got sirloin tip roasts on sale $3.88/lb this week and I have 7 of them in the deep freezer ranging 2 to 3 lbs each. Can't beat that price may cut up some of the smaller ones into steaks for the Q as I thaw them out and ya know I wish I had a meat grinder.
That cheese grater trick looks brilliant Bev. I'm about to make tourtiere for my husband's family bash and the pastry had better be perfect or my name is mud. Thanks in advance for saving my keester!
Great idea, working the dough with your fingers & hands, I always use my pastry cutter. You hit the nail on the head, COLD ingredients & the real secret, don't over work the dough. Your crust looks amazing. Thanks for the tip don't wash the wood rolling pin, I did not know that one. Just curios, have you ever "seasoned" your rolling pin, like other wood utensils?
Thanks Bev, I must over work my pie dough. I've just chalked it up to It wasn't my forte. I will try again with your help and recipe. Does rolling out on a table cloth help with humidity? Not sure but my Nan said something about it.( maybe in summertime) I guess I should have paid more attention. Have a wonderful day.
Great tutorial! I've not yet mastered pie crust, but will try using your video. However, I do use a mix of lard and butter for my pasties and they are flaky good. I'm going to try your grating technique when making them. You're awesome!
I never thought of freezing and grating. That almost seems like a chef Michael trick????? I always have used cubes of ice in my water though. I never watched the original video on your pastry cause mine is great, but I am glad you re-edited it. "I learned something new", she sings. Yes never wash your rolling pin, like a good cast iron pan, they "season".
Great tip on grating the fats! I was wondering if that was actually lard (i.e.: from a pig) that you used. I know that many people use the word "lard" when they are actually referring to vegetable shortening (such as Crisco, etc.). I've heard that lard makes great pie crust, but I've never tried it myself. I've used butter and I've used shortening, but never a blend before.
susan ryman Oh, o.k.bacon grease with too much flavor mingles with the flavor of the pie filling and the crust, lookin' for lard next time we go to the open air market! Thanks for your help Susan. :)
Jo Anne Keryger They're M&M's now over here too Jo Anne, but it isn't the same chocolate inside them. We have peanut M&M's too, but we don't get the seasonal varieties you get in the US. One year they changed the colours of them to Green,White & Red for Christmas but not the taste.
I am new to making pie crusts, actually I’ve never made one lol, but really want to learn how and this may be a silly question, but is that regular all purpose flour or self rising flour you used?
lol M&M's melt in your mouth, not in your hand! I show my age anytime one of my heathens says butter, and I say "Parkay!" The immature kid in me laughed when you said you pinched the log. >.< Shit, I threw my rolling pin in the dishwasher the other day. Thanks for that warning!
This is so well explained! As a young woman who is learning to cook from scratch, this is a goldmine. Thank you so much
Perfect ! And so agree do Not wash you rolling pin I have had mine for 54 years ! And your way of making crust was how my Gram taught me !
Awesome recipeThx for sharing.
love the tips on freezing the lard and butter and not washing the rolling pin; don't recall learning that before!
Gotta love a good pie crust. Perfect my friend :)
Thanks for making it so easy for us. I now grate my butter for scones and biscuits too! Love your videos.

Absolutely helpful!! Thank you, Mrs. Bev.!!!
My Pleasure!
That's how my Grandma did it and it was perfect every time!
That was well-explained! Brings back memories of my own momma, with the old rolling pin and your rolling cloth. I bet it was delicious!
👍👍👍 Never thought of doing it this way .
I have a great old recipe for pie crust from my Great Grandma, and she advises adding a splash of vinegar to your cold water. The vinegar evaporates when the crust bakes, making a super flaky crust! I've received nothing but compliments on this.
I love your techniques and info. Thanks so much for explaining so well.

Thank you for this. The idea of making pie crusts has always intimidated me but you make it look so easy. I make a lovely chicken pot pie, now I won't have to cheat on the crust!
Awesome sauce! I'm always learning. And I'm 60 years young.Thank you❤️

I'm feeling inspired to try a pie crust again. You make it look so darn easy. TY for sharing Bev.
Hey Sweety! remember! COLD FATS, Ice Water..don't over work the dough!
Wow! Pretty darn simple. Thanks you make things look so EZ.
After watching this earlier, I started grating butter for biscuits too. Works so well. Thanks!
I like this hand method much better than using a pastry blender. Thanks, great how-to video.

Love to see the final result!
Seen so many versions of this type of pastry and not a single one advised rolling the frozen fat in flour. You just demonstrated so much uncommon sense. Thanks again for your groovy tips.
dont know where you come from...but this is the best way to make a flaky pie crust. try it first before making negativity your forte.
I can't believe I never thought to use a grater! You are a life saver!!!
AND the ice water..and do not overwork the dough
Aw Bev, you just gave me a recipe for a pie I want to make later this week, since DH is going to go back to shoveling tomorrow and Thursday. Hope your snowfall is better than ours in the Maritimes.
I think butter in the pie crust gives it such a nice tender flaky texture and yummy taste! You make it look so easy :)
BEV, I SURE LOVE YA... U TEACH ME SOOOOO MUCH ...
This is awesome.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I do the same thing with the dish towel. But pie crust has always kicked my butt! My grandmothers and my Mother can whip up a pie crust in a flash. But it's an art. I'm trying your way now. Thanks again!

YOU ARE SO AWESOME!
Thank you. Years ago on a hot afternoon in Georgia I ruined 3 pie crusts and never tried again. I will be giving this a shot!
Once Combined? Wrap and CHILL your dough for a half hour minimum.
That cheese grater trick looks brilliant Bev. I'm about to make tourtiere for my husband's family bash and the pastry had better be perfect or my name is mud. Thanks in advance for saving my keester!
Christine Guttadauria my pleasure darling
looks great! I will need to try this out.
It is good pastry!

my grandmother always had one cloth that she used to make her dumplings on and i don't remember her ever washing it.
I wash mine when it needs it

Did you use All-Purpose flour or Self Rising?
Bev
Can I eliminate the lard? How much butter would I use instead? TY
Wonderful pie crust. Thank you Bev. Can I sub with butter?
you sure can!
Do you have a printable recipe for the pastry?
Hmm...if lard isn't that all available, could bacon grease work as well? Thumbs up Mrs.V!!
+Joe Serrano i wouldn't. bacon grease has so much flavor. Lard is no flavor.
susan ryman Oh, o.k.bacon grease with too much flavor mingles with the flavor of the pie filling and the crust, lookin' for lard next time we go to the open air market! Thanks for your help Susan. :)
In the UK those sweets were called 'TREETS' the ad slogan was " Treets, they melt in the mouth, not in the hand" see I'm that old too lol
... Here it is M&Ms .. and they certainly are TREATS.
Pastry flour or all purpose???
I am new to making pie crusts, actually I’ve never made one lol, but really want to learn how and this may be a silly question, but is that regular all purpose flour or self rising flour you used?
ALL PURPOSE!
can I replace the lard for shortening?
I wouldn't..lard and butter is much healthier than shortening!
OurHalfAcreHomestead thanks Bev
one type of flour did you use?
All purpose
Is this a new video? Because I saw a baby pug lurking around in the background.
no itès redone
I can never make pie crust taste right or have a nice texture
Just follow this video step by step..do not overwork the dough..and use ice in the water!
new sub here :)
The kneady homesteader uses your crust and she used the kitchen aid mixer for her dough for her blueberry pie. I was thinking it is being overworked.
lol M&M's melt in your mouth, not in your hand!
I show my age anytime one of my heathens says butter, and I say "Parkay!"
The immature kid in me laughed when you said you pinched the log. >.<
