Such a contrast between Purdy and Campbell. One quit on his team when healthy, the other came back into a game with a blown-out elbow because the team needed him. Guess which one is loved by his teammates?
To be fair, Purdy was forced back into that game by Shanahan out of desperation. He knew Purdy couldnt throw but risked his health because he wanted to win and is damn lucky no further damage was caused. Purdy of course was at the start of his rise too so of course he was going to want to play. Shanahan often puts players health at risk. Often puts guys out there not 100%. It's why the Niners often are among the leaders in injuries especially to top players. 49ers are one of the worst coached teams in the NFL and it's not shocking how Campbell reacted. Lets not ignore how Samuel and Aiyuk acted towards their contracts or how Aiyuk wasnt in football shape because he held out. Now he is on IR. Shanahan and the Niners allow players to get their way, to play hurt. It's a bad look and it's a reason why a SB favorite has a losing record right now. What good did overpaying Samuel and Aiyuk do? McCaffery is always hurt and he got paid. BTW in mentioning Purdy...that entire offseason Shanahan whined about the NFL hat rules, how he wasnt allowed to wear a custom hat. That is where his focus was on. Maybe in the end if he actually dressed enough QB they might have won...but doubt it.
If the NIners pay Purdy elite money, they will be .500 for years to come. He's a second tier QB. The only reason he's not the worst QB in the NFC West is because Geno Smith is there.
The Lawrence contract looks like a huge mistake. As a slightly better than average QB Purdy should be paid about $30 mil per season. Paying him much more would mean they'd have to cut corners at other positions.
Campbell, has been hot garbage all season. People talk about Bosa, and Warner, but Dre is the heart of the Niner defense. Look at Super Bowl 58, the Chiefs were cooked until Dre left the game. The Niner defense has been trash all season, the first half of the game Dre played, was the best the defense has looked since Dre was hurt in the Super Bowl. It's good that someone in the media understand the reasons Purdy will get that contract. As a 49ers fan, I've seen other QBs here with Kyle and I have no doubt Purdy deserves that top contract. You can't move on from him (which means you can't try and get a cheap deal) and hope to find something better. As far as the cap goes, the 49ers will have a lot of cap space next year once the insurance cap refund kicks in. The 49ers are one of the teams that insures all the big contracts and even some of the smaller ones and when that money comes in the NFL treats it as a refund from the player, which counts as more cap space the following season. That should help them keep most of the team together. Big contracts aren't a problem. The problem is big contracts that don't deliver. We'll see if BA delivers on his big contract. Fred and Kittle definitely delivered on there's. Deebo might be the one that sticks out the most but they restructured him and it won't make a lot of sense to move on, unless they really lose all faith in him bouncing back from this season. Bosa doesn't have the same individual stats but the defense looks very different when he's not playing. The availability problem with both Nick and Joey seems to be a problem, maybe the training regimen that makes them beasts is a problem for that.
