Having no magnet on board, you will need to add a small amount of lead weight to the inside of the chassis to tame the rear end hangout and keep it in the slot. Truing both front and rear tyres will also help.
Probably the wheels are out of round on the Cougar, especially the front ones. That’s common with Scalextric cars. The contact problem is either the braids are not touching the track or the braid plate is not inserted correctly. Try angling the braids towards the inside of the guide and at a 45 degree angle with the in side edge up. This is only for Scalextric tracks. Mike M.

Looks and sounds like to me the front axle might be a little bent and no weight in front
