Hello
Hi Hbox 👋
Hello Clutchbox
Much love hbox
much love to you hbox
This is beautiful. Thanks, Walt.
Nothing is more melee than coming back from something like this.
Melee is the longest living fighting game of its size. Even starcraft has constant meta changes through its stage list.
Melee doesn't need that. Melee is unkillable. We are a united community, and you can't take away our fight
This video really opened my eyes towards melee players. I wish you guys the best.
It's too bad you had to use profanity so now Nintendo won't even publicly acknowledge it.
I'm expecting the anime reviews

"You made our game, but you did not make our community"
Damn, that line is so strong
but what is the community without the game. sound powerful yes but i believe its hollow.
like a bunch disfuncional neighborhood that gathers to watch football and then never comes together. is that really a community or just lost puppies tied together by a very loose string.
bot to mention fighting games communities are very interesting as they are elitist and toxic.
truly a good show for sure.
@@rpghero46 first of all, you can easily say that the game would be nothing without its community. Second of all, that analogy was terrible imo.
@@beebubbles9071 yaawn! Nintendo dosent care about about melee. clearly they needed. i will work on my analogies in the future. but you get it do you point been. if the only link this community has its a fighting game, it's a weak reason to remain together.
@@rpghero46 fair enough
@@rpghero46 I'd argue the passion is what both keeps the community together, and is also what *has* kept it together for years.

“The Melee Community so toxic”
The actual community:
The most vocal are the most toxic but that’s usually how it goes
It had (and has) its problems. We can’t just ignore the parts we don’t want. At least it’s trying to address it.
Actually, Nintendo's action in 2013 already united the other FGC guy with the Melee community. Heck, even non-melee players stood up to the Melee community when Nintendo did something retarded.
Lmao 99% of them are toxic af
@@Rizky-Gumilar 99% of everyone I have met at tournaments are sweet hearts idk what you’re talking about

That scar line is too powerful 🖤
"I know it's kind of an accident.. But so are half of us, and we're awesome."
Mang0!!! 😭😭😭❤❤❤
im not sure about the overlap, but in the Speedcubing community, something similar happened a while ago when the Rubik's brand started going after speedcube manufacturers and competitions. I hope that the Melee community can persevere in the same way that the speedcubing community did.
honestly that is really similar, people needing to "adjust" the original product in order to bring out its best in competitive form, and the original creators trying to destroy it.
That's insane, never heard of this
I had no clue about this, It’s so weird how some company’s just want to preserve the original products idea and aren’t open to the product changing at all. I think this is really similar
I remember when this happened. btw whats your pb?
@@cheeto_ssbm7826 7.46! and my PB average is 9.98!
This really encompasses the passion and love this community has.
Nobody has said this yet so I’m just gonna do it. IS THAT THE UNDERTALE OST GUY?!
The Hax clip just made me realize how passionate he is about the game, imagine your doctor telling you you need to quit a game because the way you use you controller LITERALLY made your hand explode on the inside and you somehow manage to invent a completely new controller that you can use to optimize your gameplay without harming your hands just so you can keep playing this game, or even this one specific character, even though your doctor told you you were past the point of no return...
absolute legend
I only started playing Melee at the start of quarantine and after seeing people fight for Melee, I truly do hope to be part of it sometime in the future.
if you fight for melee, you're already a part of the community ;)
Same, aint letting it die
Welcome to the family
Melee deserves better, thank you for doing what your doing
I haven't been active in the community for a long time, but the clip of someone moving a CRT just brings so many memories flooding back. This isn't the first time nintendo has tried to stop us, and the community will rise to the challenge.
I have never played Melee, but as someone who joined the competitive Smash scene with Ultimate's release, I appreciate what it's done for me as a person, and especially how that same love for the game affected people 19 years ago, and caused their lives to blossom. I wouldn't want this to be taken away from anyone. I live for the memories and stories that this game creates. It's all really beautiful.
#FreeMelee
Now that, is what I call a respectable Ultimate player 👍
Yeah I feel the same way, I've never played Melee, but I love Smash and am a part of Ultimate's competitive scene. I don't understand Melee at all, but I do understand that it is something that many people love and has given many great experiences to people. Competitive Smash probably wouldn't be a thing without Melee and so I wouldn't have the love for competitive Ultimate without Melee so I do respect Melee and support it in this hard time.
#FreeMelee
@@CrackshotSSB I figure now is a good time to ask and please don't take this the wrong way I'm really not trying to be rude, but why do Melee players dislike Ultimate and Ultimate players or really anyone who prefers another Smash game over their own? You said "a respectable Ultimate player", so is it because Ultimate players trash on Melee, because I've never really heard any other Ultimate player do that. I'm assuming you play Melee right?
@@vslazer6728 My apologies for any misunderstandings, I want to clarify that I do indeed love Ultimate for what it is, and in regards to Melee players disliking Ultimate, I would have to say I’ve only heard the opposite. Many Melee players saw 4 as slow, unbalanced, unfun gameplay, so when ultimate came out and had a better feel to it, many melee players came out to support Ultimate as the future of the series. I know this belief doesn’t necessarily apply to all Melee fans, but I personally believe that Ultimate is way more praised by the melee community compared to any of the previous games.
And about Ultimate players trashing Melee, I have personally heard a lot of opinions of Melee from players that didn’t grow up with the game and/or started with Ultimate. To be honest, I don’t blame them for disliking the game or seeing it as unbalanced garbage, because it’s not Ultimate, and it’s never going to be Ultimate. Melee is a game that is appreciated by a certain audience, same with Ultimate. I hope that players in the future will come to see and respect Melee as Ultimate’s predecessor, rather than trying to compare it to Ultimate and it’s obviously superior level of content, quality, etc. Both games are beautiful, and I wish nothing more than to see both of these games succeed in the end. My apologies if I missed anything:)
So long as this community exists, Melee will never die, no matter what obstacles are in the way. I was not heavily into eSports before being exposed to competitive Melee. This game is so exhilarating and has a lush and rich history that continues to be written every single day.
Melee is sick.
Long live this wonderful game.
Fully agree ❤️
No offense but Melee is so overrated, it is so unbelievable that Melee has a lot of fans over almost 20 years since it's release, but unlike Brawl and Smash 4, Melee thrived and survived over time.
@Derek Corsner Read carefully you moron.
@@joseluistrejo1859 Idk what to say except your comment gives mixed signals of being negative and positive at the same time
@@joseluistrejo1859 like it says in this video: Its not just about melee as the game. Its about all the people, storys and shit melee brought with it. Absolutely beautiful. I played smash as a kid all the way back with the 64 in 2000. I entered my first tournament in 2012 and made so many friends along the way. I have countless memorizes with the scene either at tournaments or hanging with the people I met there. This game will always be a special in my eyes and so many others.

Someone please get Captions in Japanese for this.
Sucks that fan made captions are dead now...
It's been years since I spent a lot of time watching Melee outside of general fighting game tournaments. My last vivid memory of it was staying up until 5 a.m. or whatever it was, secretly watching Apex 2015 in bed, watching PPMD raise the trophy and scream, "I DID IT!" I've tuned in to Evo finals since then, as 2015 was also around the time I started watching Evo and other general fighting game tournaments regularly. Even as mostly just a spectator who had only played Smash with high school friends long ago, I think Melee has had a significant impact on my life. It's given me a lot of joy, but it's also given me a lot of pain. I knew, and still know now, that nobody I knew outside the internet in my adult life would really understand my interest in this game, and I was never able to go to tournaments. Tournaments are still only a fleeting dream for me, which I may never achieve, and maybe that's for the best. The recent influx of fighting games with rollback netcode on PC has been the closest thing to that kind of experience I've had, and I'm grateful for that.
So I guess my relationship with Melee is a weird one. It gives me a lot of mixed feelings, even today. I can quit caring about it for so long, and then come back and yell at Nintendo and its ghoulish defenders. I can try so many times to move on from it, but still harbour a pretty much permanent distrust of the old FGC (pre-2009) for the amount of patronizing bullshit they pulled, first using a clearly bullshit Brawl ruleset to try to completely discredit the Smash community in 2008, then 5 years later, pitting it against Skullgirls for a spot at Evo (and I'm sure someone like dekillsage would have much more to say about that than I ever could).
I have nothing to do with the Melee scene but I find this delightful. One comment for the algorithm juice!
This is so much more than a game now. It's changed so many people's lives, made so many great moments, and has brought together an incredibly large amount of outstanding people over the years. I really hope they do see this, and reconsider. #FreeMelee

Had a single tear roll down my left cheek to this, amazing video Walt.
Nintendo basically said that they don't care about our feelings
Let's just hope they change their mind and listen to the voices
We need to get Nintendo's dickishness in mainstream magazines, somehow. Something that's impactful enough that they have to consider the sales problems associated with being horrible to their own fans.
@@badlydrawnturtle8484 There's millions of people ready to defend Nintendo from any negativity, won't happen sadly :(
As long as we keep supporting Nintendo's products like the Switch and their latest games they're not gonna change and don't you guys think its a little convenient that Nintendo shut down a big tournament right around the holidays? They gotta make that money somehow. This kind of thing would probably not have happened in the Wii U era and we all took Nintendo back then for granted.
And nearly one year later, Walt will be part of the first Esports team that made a real contact with Nintendo. And they give us the visability that we didn't have.
they finally made it happen.
Smash Bros melee to me is one of the best games on the whole damn planet. While I do not like the competitive aspect of it because of the amount of glitches and exploits, the super small tier list that hasn't changed as much over the years, this specific game is still very much loved. I've argued with people before on this website about how competitive is so hard to break into because of so many problems, but this game is still very very important to me. I may have started with the original Nintendo 64 release, and I loved it there, but I had a truly genuine love when melee came into our home.
And even with all of its problems, I still want to play with friends over it. I want to play with people I don't know over it. And before you laugh, yes, I would pick somebody like bowser. Why? Because he was my boy back then. Still is. no matter what people tell me.
the very fact that Nintendo wants to shut down something so huge to people, over a game that they don't even sell anymore. For what? It's taking sales off the new game? It's already the top selling game on that console. And if it isn't, it's fucking close.
Nintendo, you used to mean so much to me. Oh I'll still play your games. Oh I'll still buy the console. But you as a business? I hate you. You used to be great.
I hope one day you wake up. Whoever is running you now, needs to calm down or step down.
i am crying
this video made me remember a lot of things

Thank you, nobody else could have shown Melee the way you have in this video.
Everyone needs to send this to Nintendo. We need a response. Maybe we will even get a Christmas miracle and their icy hearts will grow 10 sizes.
I promise you, they won't. No one from nintendo will watch this no matter how many times people send it to them, and even if they do, they simply do not care. Melee isn't a game they're currently selling and these adults aren't their target audience. You have to remember- these are not people with feelings, this is a corporation. They do not care if it's not making them money. They want these people to buy Ultimate, that's all. And honestly? That fucking sucks.
They already did respond. Saying something along the lines of Thank you for caring about our game. We reached out to them to ask them to not use slippi, they refused so we took legal action. I don't think they will reach out after that
@@LunatheMoonDragon Yeah, but they care about money, so they, therefore, care about optics. If this video is obviously seen by Nintendo and ignored, then it'll be bad for PR. Any bad news about a company lowers the stock price because the stock price is an assumed net worth of the company
@@Calebanton Bad PR for what? This is just a group of childish adults whining about a 20 year old game in the eyes of most people, including nintendo.
@@metrolink147 That's the problem. Without Slippi, they can't do online tournaments smoothly, and as long as everyone has the game (and they all do), it's legal.
This game basically made me who i am today and I will continue to cherish it until I die.
Love the vids every upload! Keep up the good shit!
Long Live melee. Even without Nintendo, there is no way the love and the passion for this game will ever die. I only very recently got into melee, but it is by far the greatest community out there and I cant wait to see where it goes in the future. Long Live Melee.
Even if melee dies one day, I’m just happy it happened
Melee was the way i bonded with my cousin, the one who saved me, made me laugh, helped me through hard times. I want this game to survive longer than nintendo is letting it.
Nintendo: please make peace with the community. Charge a fee for having us use a mod or something, but let it exist. We need to get through COVID. This is the only way to realistically play the game right now.
charging a fee for using a mod is not something possible.
@@LunatheMoonDragon A fee for a tournament to be allowed to use it is. Private use would be much trickier, but Big House being allowed to happen if they get a percentage of the entry fees makes sense.
@@jonathandwilliams2885 I can't imagine the legality of claiming a portion of the profits of a tournament using a fan made mod for a 20 year old game on a 20 year old system. And either way, why would they do that? They don't care about old games and they don't care about their older audience. They'd make more money by making them buy ultimate, but they honestly, don't care if adults buy games period.
Melee is where it all started for me... the nostalgia is too real when I hear that intro.
I don't support the Melee scene personally, and many a Melee player has been a source of frustration for me when trying to talk about other fighting games.
But y'all deserve to evolve your scene. If Capcom decided to kill GGPO in its infancy, we wouldn't have the best netcode, the love for some of my favorite games of all time, or even Slippi for that matter. We wouldn't be having the push for the genre as a whole to improve. We wouldn't have people playing Guilty Gear XX ACR right now.
Nintendo is doing to Melee what Capcom wouldn't do to their own. That alone, considering how insane of a company Capcom is, says a lot.
Good Game, Peace Out.
Beautiful, absolutely gorgeous video right there Walt!!!
Even though I don’t play melee but.... #FreeMelee
I never really got into Melee and this got me emotional
Melee is freedom, free form beauty.
This game has given me my fair share of smiles and tears. It means an amount I cannot put into words.
The passion of the Melee community is genuinely beautiful. It’s a new kind of beautiful, something part of a new generation of people. It’s such a broken, jumbled mess of code and dedicated people took this mess and made it gorgeous. Here’s to 19 more years of the greatest accident ever made #freemelee
Why can’t Nintendo just be happy that a game made 20 years ago has such a passionate fan base, why are they trying to kill something that so many people love?
I think it's also because they want people to buy the newest Smash game being Ultimate which is still an amazing game and my personal favorite, but they need to understand that people can enjoy what they want to enjoy in any way that they want to enjoy it. So put shortly, they want money and they are no longer making money from Melee, but they could really solve that problem by making an HD port of Melee on their newest console and lovers of the game would buy that up so fast, it really makes no fricking sense why they haven't done this yet.
@@vslazer6728
It makes perfect sense why they haven’t actually.
GameCube/Wii CRT:2 Frames of input lag!(less on PC)
Switch Modern TV:7 Frames of input lag!
Not to mention that they will try to patch the game because Sakurai sees it as a failure!
Making less people buy it because Nintendo ruined the game like how Disney literally destroyed their original princess films.
@@smashkiller64 I don't understand all your nerd words, but I respectfully disagree. I still think it would work well and more importantly sell well.
@@vslazer6728
Input lag is how long it take from when you push the button to when it happens on screen.
Nintendo Switch has very high input lag making the games feel not as responsive.
Melee is all about speed, slow Melee would fail.
@@smashkiller64 I think Switch games are fine and not that slow, but I've never played Melee so I would have no idea of a comparison between the Switch version and the Gamecube version.
You and AsumSaus introduced me into smash, it gave me something I enjoyed and I could try to grow in. I love this community, thankyou Walt.
Nintendo hates the fact they didn't invent the Slippy mod, a brilliant rollback netcode that puts Ultimate's online to shame.
Yet if Slippy never existed, Nintendo never would go back to create an online Network for a 19 year old game.

Well I do think it’s a bit messed up by Nintendo taking down melee form big house BUT there is 2 sides of every story, but if you look at Nintendo’s side, you see a big event of YOUR game BUT they are playing it in a version where they don’t ACTUALLY have to pay for the game. Nintendo thinks that they are playing it because you don’t have to pay for it but it’s actually because it has online but yeah, i honestly don’t know how to feel about this, I’m sad that Nintendo took it down but i also understand why it got taken down and more people should know why because they think Nintendo is just completely heartless even tho they are not
