Mirai Nikki is Future Diary in japanese. Like Shingeki no Kyojin is Attack on Titan in japanese Also...... romance? Well, sorta. Yuno is the prototype of crazy psycho girlfriend. As for what it´s about.... Battle royale for God´s power as reward, but everybody can see the future in their diary anotations instead of what they would have written days prior. Still, this is the show of Yuno. Crazy stalking psycho girlfriend with a huge body count by the end of the show...

The main character in Future Diary is a personality type characterized by Japanese as Yandere. 'Yandere' is best described as a crazy obsessive lover personality....the kind of person who will kill to keep a person all to themselves.
It is a romance but also a brutal battle royale and psychological horror show. I loved watching it for the very interesting thought processes/psychology of the main and even the side characters, and also for the very brutal fights. Also the two names are the original Japanese put into Latin script otherwise known as Romaji, and the original Japanese translated into English.
This a good description, but sometimes the anime is edgy for the sake of being edgy. is a better much better pick Chainsaw man (I read the manga and can say it is one of the best things anime related, some would say better tem AoT but that's debatable)

Those shows lack a character like yuno gasai, who by her own self, brings this shows entire sense of horror, danger, mental illness, dangerous love and obsessive personality types. Aots a better show, Chainsaw man is debatable since the animation is mostly what's carrying it, but with some interesting characters too.

Survival game animes basically boil down to the following: 1. Group of people participates in some sort of tornament. 2. Every person gets some unique power from whoever is running the game. 3. Last person (or a team in some cases) alive gets a prize (most of the time that prize is one wish coming true, sometimes the winning person becomes the God).

This is a series that you have to watch fansubbed because official subs don't translate text on screen for particularly important parts that give a lot of context.
This series is extremely iconic in the otaku community simply because of the main female character, Gasai Yuno. She is by far most iconic yandere character of all time, to the point that even after all these years the facial expression she makes at the end of the first episode is still the universal symbol of the personality type. Now, the series didn't invent the yandere archetype, yandere characters have existed for thousands of years (famous mythological figures that could fit into the archetype include Brynhildr from Norse mythology and Kiyohime from Japanese mythology etc.), but ever since it came out the very word "yandere" has been more or less synonymous with Future Diary. Anyway, highly recommend the series, and would love to see you react to it one day as there are very few reactions to it.
I think you'd love Yousei Teikoku, the band for the first and third songs! They're described as "gothic metal" and their sound has actually gotten heavier over time, especially with their most recent album "Age of Villains". One of my favorite Japanese bands right now.
Definitely one of my favorite musical artists. My favorite song by them is Astral Dogma. Definitely an epic song and cool video. Their costuming is always on point as well.

Yeah, the anime feels like the creator binged the fate series, thought “this isn’t edgy enough”, and made their own version by randomly mashing together a bunch of cool ideas they had. It’s not the most coherent story

I've commented on the stream before, but you should totally check out Higurashi When They Cry, which was originally a visual novel. The anime has a total of six openings.
Now these, these are those openings I am here for. Definitely consider watching the anime. It is indeed a romance, one of my favorites, but definitely not what one would expect. After Deadman Wonderland and Mirai Nikki, there is one destination this creepy animes path is clearly leading towards: Higurashi no naku korono ni/When they cry. Deadman and Mirai Nikki are famous, but Higurashi is legendary. You have to watch those openings, they are the natural continuation from here.
This show is inherently a romance, all hidden within a giant battle royale. Mirai Nikki is Future Diary just in Japanese. Openings 1-2 are from the show (all one season it’s only about 24 episodes) and opening 3 is from an OVA that serves as like the “finale” to the show similar to Death Note’s
BTW from a point of a view it indeed is a romance, just a messed up psychotic kind of love, portraying a stalker-yandere( crazy/insane lover), she does indeed love him and that can constitute romance :)
Great anime. Has two seasons and an OVA (extra episode that is kinda important). Basic Premise without giving too much away is like a deadly last man standing competition mixed with a twisted obsessive love story. 🙂👍

Highly recommend watching this show. It is considered a Romance anime surely. But also Gore. Also Action. Definitely Psychological. Probably also Mystery, Thriller, maybe Horror. You may even consider it philosophical (which also applies to shows like Attack on Titan). Edit: Damn, it has been like 10 years or so since I watched it... should probably rewatch, so would love to see your reactions to it as you are still rather new to the anime landscape.

1. Please do "Made In Abyss"! Has two endings by Myth & Roid (the movie and the second season), and the in-show OSTs by Kevin Penkin are beautiful, haunting orchestral/vocal/synth pieces. 2. To imagine how this could be a romance, note that a "romance" is just a story about the growing love between 2+ people. Doesn't mean the journey of cultivating that relationship can't involve wanton, bloody murder and insanity. ;-)
its an anime a lot of us watched a while ago, its part of the, lets call it, "starter pack" or getting into anime. huge nostalgia can fully recommend it!
In essence Mirai Nikki is a Suvival Game with a romance element to it. It's not a bad series to check out as a first time watcher. My recommendation for another series is Kaguya-sama Love is War!
Just finished the show a few weeks ago after a friend recommended it as a must watch and man, this show is so bad, I'm convinced it's probably not as good as you remember.
Not really, it's more like a Romance with a Survival game element to it. Or actually a character driven thriller with a romance element that is disguised as a show about a survival game.
@@atkatnd Ep 2 is the worst ep in all of anime in my opinion. In the spirit of the show, I wrote down what I thought after each episode, Here's what I wrote for ep 2. Spoilers for Future Diary episode 2. The show casually blows up 3-4 classrooms filled with students with no fanfare. I want to care about this but the show doesn't have the time and won't let me. 9 set bombs around the school. Our main cast doesn't think to hide in the rooms that have already detonated and so are probably safe. The other students somehow leave the rigged classrooms to give up Yuki to 9. The yandere doesn't like this and goes full yandere, killing as many students as she can. A little bit later the other students (yes I think they are the ones yandere blew up) leave the classroom to support Yuuki (Yes the ones who turned him in) and somehow don't explode. She (9) set a minefield and put Yuuki’s phone in the center. WHY?!. She’s trying to kill Yuuki, so why do all this? Just break his phone. I know she’s trying to lure out 4 but he’s already here, and her first demand is to have 4 kill Yuuki. WHY?!. Yuki runs through the minefield avoiding the mines thanks to yandere’s callouts. Ok, we can finally talk about the minefield… WHY a minefield? The only thing they know about the other contestants is that they can read the future, SO WHY A MINEFIELD? Sure the future is ever changing but you know what doesn't change? THE MINES! After getting stabbed in the eye by Yuki, 9 uses her rocket skirt to distract everyone and escapes on her motorcycle and it’s explained that she used her escape diary. I don’t even have to explain how dumb this is.
Future Diary is suuuuuuuuch a damn good anime, felt nostalgic listening to these OPs again. Honorable mention for Yuno, an OG Yandere, with a capital letter.

If we are talking purely on the shonen demographic we have Black Clover, Naruto, Bleach (with all its flaws), Dr. Stone, Air Gear (incomplete anime), Jujutsu Kaisen (even though it's a bit generic, it's writing is ages ahead of MHA), etc.

Silent type. and Tsundere. mean/a bitch on the outside, but get to know them and they are just cute or something like that
I cannot tell you how thrilled i am you reviewed this one! Another one of my all time favorites. I could tell you'd like it. If you do see it, as I tell anyone who does. I highly recommend you watch the series twice in a row for the full effect.
Mirai Nikki has romance but people kill each other in it, that’s it. If you want to watch this Anime, I would recommend it. This Anime is mediocre but the first time you watch it can make you feel like it’s a masterpiece just because it’s different.
So a quick non spoilery description would be that the basis is people are taking part in a death game to decide the new god. In order to aid them in this fight, they have all been given "future diaries", hence the name, which as you can guess are diaries that see into the future. It's definitely a dark show, as you can probably tell by the openings. I wouldn't say it's on "I need therapy" levels of dark, but there are definitely a ton of triggers for trauma. It has 2 main seasons (like 24 episodes or so I think?) and it has an OVA that finishes it off. And yes, it is technically correct to call it a romance anime, but obviously that's not all it is.
Do "call of the night" next. It has one op named "daten" and one ed named "call of the night" by the same band, both are fire!! Actually, the song came first and inspired the writer to create the story so when the anime came out they asked the band (named "creepy nuts") to let them use their song (plus 1-2 others) and create an original song for the op. They even have some First Take performances!
I recommend to check ost from Made in Abyss - Hanezeve Caradhina (ft.Takeshi Saito).It was frist used in the dawn scen in the first episode. And Made in Abyss OST 2: The Rumble of Scientific Triumph.
Just a pointer on pronouncing the romanized Japanese, all the vowels have a consistent sound. A=ah, e=eh, i=ee, o=oh, u=oo. They will slightly change depending on the letters before or after and fluidity of speech. So, Mirai Nikki will sound like Mee-rah-ee Nee-kee
Omg! This is the first anime I ever watched! Before watching this I always thought anime was just for kids but then I watched this and I was blown away lol.
Future Diary is one of my all-time favorite animes. It is one of the most beautifully f--ked up things I have ever had the priviledge to watch. Cannot recommend enough.
While it certainly has its shortcomings, it's also completely insane and quite enjoyable. Basically a great guilty pleasure. As long as you don't go into it expecting it to be as well written as something like AoT you'll probably have a lot of fun with it.

I recommend "Another" or "Death Parade". And the "romance" part is something you'll understand if you watch it. It's basically twisted love , it's not the main point but it's heavily influenced by it.
Mirai nikki/future diary being a romance at its core isn’t exactly wrong but it’s mostly of the survival horror genre The premise of future fairy is yukiteru the protagonist, is a student and considers himself a watcher or a bystander to the world around him, he keeps a diary of every day happenings on his phone and his only companion is an inhuman imaginary friend named deus ex machina aka deus who refers to himself as god and deus’ plucky servant muru One day he wakes up to find diary entries already written out for the day on his phone and initially waves it off as typo or glitch on the date but quickly realizes the entries are actually foretelling the future because events start happening exactly as written, deus then comes to him and say that he has been real this whole time (yuki denies his existence as imaginary but deus counters saying if god is omnipotent and omnipresence then he could very well exist in someone’s imagination too) and has converted yuki’s diary into a future diary along with yuki now being a participant in a battle royal to the death with several others who also holds a future diary of their own too with the winner; the remaining survivor getting to take deus’ place as god
love this anime, very good plot twists and very good ending, the main girl from this show is what popularized the insane girl anime trope i like to think
I think you would enjoy Mirai Nikki, because it is more on the darker side. More psycholigical horror-ish. I also think you would really like Berserk. There is a new opening for the memorial Edition (currently airing) that is full of spoilers for the show, but there are the older ones as well with really good music...
Yaay, Mirai Nikki, one of my favorite animes. It's basically a deadly battle royale between 12 people. It's a short anime of only 26 episodes + a special one. It's worth watching, I recommend it :D
Oh man, I would really like to see you watch this one. It's been ages since I saw this show, but there still scenes and twists that are firmly cemented in my memory.
Mirai Nikki/Future Diary is the top tier of anime, and the one that set the standards for plot twists for the media (one that was only matched by Attack on Titan). Really worth the watch, specially because it's only about 25 eps long and is a complete package. Also I really recommending checking the endings, the songs for the 1st and 2nd ones are awesome. As for other recommendations, I'll keep voting for That Time I reincarnated as a slime, RWBY and the most insane one: So I'm a Spider, so What? (yeah, that's the name of the show)
Future Diary / Mirai Nikki is an amazing anime, the main characters take time to grow on you throughout the show but by the end its amazing. The best anime usually take time for characters to grow on you though, thats character development. I also continue to recommend the Higurashi openings, that series is disturbing yet beautiful.
Mirai Nikki was one of the first manga of the author and the story is totally crazy with a heroine more important then the MC. She's one of the best known "Yandere"(someone who kill as easily as they breath, for love or not). And yes there is 3 romances and it turns around the one between MC and heroine but it still a crazy survival game between ppl who can see the future xD
You are right. It is a romance. A romance with a yandere - a character archetype where the person is borderline psychotic with their feelings about you. It's not a "I'm jealous of you talking with other girls so I'll tell you about it." It's "I'm jealous of you talking with other girls so I killed them all." type of deal.
Basically, it's a battle royale. The participants have diaries where they used to write about certain topics. Now their diaries tell about the future related to those topics. The male MC wrote about what he saw, so now his future diary shows him what "he will see". The female MC wrote about what the male MC did (she's in love with male MC and is quite obsessed with him), so her diary tells all he will do. Both are participants on the battle royale and only 1 can win. On a side note, if you love dark anime, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni ("when they cry" is another name for the series) is most likely the best of the older ones.
That first song alone deserves a full reaction on itself, using the original music video, with lyrics on (the official video has lyrics in lots of languages). I recommend 👍🏽😊
If you're into some of the darker stuff then I would highly recommend that you take a look at Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni(also known as When They Cry), Made in Abyss, and Elfen Lied. This series is extremely iconic in the otaku community simply because of the main female character, Gasai Yuno. She is by far most iconic yandere character of all time, to the point that even after all these years the facial expression she makes at the end of the first episode is still the universal symbol of the personality type. Now, the series didn't invent the yandere archetype, yandere characters have existed for thousands of years (famous mythological figures that could fit into the archetype include Brynhildr from Norse mythology and Kiyohime from Japanese mythology etc.), but ever since it came out the very word "yandere" has been more or less synonymous with Future Diary. Anyway, highly recommend the series, and would love to see you react to it one day as there are very few reactions to it.

They're described as "gothic metal" and their sound has actually gotten heavier over time, especially with their most recent album "Age of Villains".

Yeah, the anime feels like the creator binged the fate series, thought “this isn’t edgy enough”, and made their own version by randomly mashing together a bunch of cool ideas they had. It’s not the most coherent story

I've commented on the stream before, but you should totally check out Higurashi When They Cry, which was originally a visual novel. The anime has a total of six openings.
Now these, these are those openings I am here for. Definitely consider watching the anime. It is indeed a romance, one of my favorites, but definitely not what one would expect.
After Deadman Wonderland and Mirai Nikki, there is one destination this creepy animes path is clearly leading towards: Higurashi no naku korono ni/When they cry. Deadman and Mirai Nikki are famous, but Higurashi is legendary. You have to watch those openings, they are the natural continuation from here.
This show is inherently a romance, all hidden within a giant battle royale. Mirai Nikki is Future Diary just in Japanese. Openings 1-2 are from the show (all one season it’s only about 24 episodes) and opening 3 is from an OVA that serves as like the “finale” to the show similar to Death Note’s
OVA is bad it ruins the message and theme of the show
BTW from a point of a view it indeed is a romance, just a messed up psychotic kind of love, portraying a stalker-yandere( crazy/insane lover), she does indeed love him and that can constitute romance :)

Great anime. Has two seasons and an OVA (extra episode that is kinda important). Basic Premise without giving too much away is like a deadly last man standing competition mixed with a twisted obsessive love story. 🙂👍

Highly recommend watching this show. It is considered a Romance anime surely. But also Gore. Also Action. Definitely Psychological. Probably also Mystery, Thriller, maybe Horror. You may even consider it philosophical (which also applies to shows like Attack on Titan).
Edit: Damn, it has been like 10 years or so since I watched it... should probably rewatch, so would love to see your reactions to it as you are still rather new to the anime landscape.

I love Future Diary I've seen it several times it never gets boring. Future Diary is the english name Mirai Nikki is the Japanese name I think.
1. Please do "Made In Abyss"! Has two endings by Myth & Roid (the movie and the second season), and the in-show OSTs by Kevin Penkin are beautiful, haunting orchestral/vocal/synth pieces.
2. To imagine how this could be a romance, note that a "romance" is just a story about the growing love between 2+ people. Doesn't mean the journey of cultivating that relationship can't involve wanton, bloody murder and insanity. ;-)

In essence Mirai Nikki is a Suvival Game with a romance element to it. It's not a bad series to check out as a first time watcher. My recommendation for another series is Kaguya-sama Love is War!
Just finished the show a few weeks ago after a friend recommended it as a must watch and man, this show is so bad, I'm convinced it's probably not as good as you remember.
Not really, it's more like a Romance with a Survival game element to it. Or actually a character driven thriller with a romance element that is disguised as a show about a survival game.

Spoilers for Future Diary episode 2.
The show casually blows up 3-4 classrooms filled with students with no fanfare. I want to care about this but the show doesn't have the time and won't let me.
9 set bombs around the school. Our main cast doesn't think to hide in the rooms that have already detonated and so are probably safe.
The other students somehow leave the rigged classrooms to give up Yuki to 9. The yandere doesn't like this and goes full yandere, killing as many students as she can. A little bit later the other students (yes I think they are the ones yandere blew up) leave the classroom to support Yuuki (Yes the ones who turned him in) and somehow don't explode.
She (9) set a minefield and put Yuuki’s phone in the center. WHY?!. She’s trying to kill Yuuki, so why do all this? Just break his phone. I know she’s trying to lure out 4 but he’s already here, and her first demand is to have 4 kill Yuuki. WHY?!. Yuki runs through the minefield avoiding the mines thanks to yandere’s callouts. Ok, we can finally talk about the minefield… WHY a minefield? The only thing they know about the other contestants is that they can read the future, SO WHY A MINEFIELD? Sure the future is ever changing but you know what doesn't change? THE MINES!
After getting stabbed in the eye by Yuki, 9 uses her rocket skirt to distract everyone and escapes on her motorcycle and it’s explained that she used her escape diary. I don’t even have to explain how dumb this is.
Mirai Nikki is a good anime with romance, action, gore and almost everything. I think it is a good anime to introduce yourself in anime ^^
Future Diary is suuuuuuuuch a damn good anime, felt nostalgic listening to these OPs again.
Honorable mention for Yuno, an OG Yandere, with a capital letter.

Mirai Nikki has romance but people kill each other in it, that’s it. If you want to watch this Anime, I would recommend it. This Anime is mediocre but the first time you watch it can make you feel like it’s a masterpiece just because it’s different.
it does make way more sense if you see the protagonists as the bad guys and critique the protagonist duo
So a quick non spoilery description would be that the basis is people are taking part in a death game to decide the new god. In order to aid them in this fight, they have all been given "future diaries", hence the name, which as you can guess are diaries that see into the future. It's definitely a dark show, as you can probably tell by the openings. I wouldn't say it's on "I need therapy" levels of dark, but there are definitely a ton of triggers for trauma. It has 2 main seasons (like 24 episodes or so I think?) and it has an OVA that finishes it off.
And yes, it is technically correct to call it a romance anime, but obviously that's not all it is.

Do "call of the night" next. It has one op named "daten" and one ed named "call of the night" by the same band, both are fire!! Actually, the song came first and inspired the writer to create the story so when the anime came out they asked the band (named "creepy nuts") to let them use their song (plus 1-2 others) and create an original song for the op. They even have some First Take performances!
Main Character "Yuno" here is like the Face of Yandere Characters. For me her character popularity is always revived during Halloween hahaha

Just a pointer on pronouncing the romanized Japanese, all the vowels have a consistent sound. A=ah, e=eh, i=ee, o=oh, u=oo. They will slightly change depending on the letters before or after and fluidity of speech.
So, Mirai Nikki will sound like Mee-rah-ee Nee-kee

Future Diary is one of my all-time favorite animes. It is one of the most beautifully f--ked up things I have ever had the priviledge to watch. Cannot recommend enough.

While it certainly has its shortcomings, it's also completely insane and quite enjoyable. Basically a great guilty pleasure. As long as you don't go into it expecting it to be as well written as something like AoT you'll probably have a lot of fun with it.

Mirai nikki/future diary being a romance at its core isn’t exactly wrong but it’s mostly of the survival horror genre
The premise of future fairy is yukiteru the protagonist, is a student and considers himself a watcher or a bystander to the world around him, he keeps a diary of every day happenings on his phone and his only companion is an inhuman imaginary friend named deus ex machina aka deus who refers to himself as god and deus’ plucky servant muru
One day he wakes up to find diary entries already written out for the day on his phone and initially waves it off as typo or glitch on the date but quickly realizes the entries are actually foretelling the future because events start happening exactly as written, deus then comes to him and say that he has been real this whole time (yuki denies his existence as imaginary but deus counters saying if god is omnipotent and omnipresence then he could very well exist in someone’s imagination too) and has converted yuki’s diary into a future diary along with yuki now being a participant in a battle royal to the death with several others who also holds a future diary of their own too with the winner; the remaining survivor getting to take deus’ place as god

I think you would enjoy Mirai Nikki, because it is more on the darker side. More psycholigical horror-ish. I also think you would really like Berserk. There is a new opening for the memorial Edition (currently airing) that is full of spoilers for the show, but there are the older ones as well with really good music...
Yaay, Mirai Nikki, one of my favorite animes. It's basically a deadly battle royale between 12 people. It's a short anime of only 26 episodes + a special one. It's worth watching, I recommend it :D

Oh man, I would really like to see you watch this one. It's been ages since I saw this show, but there still scenes and twists that are firmly cemented in my memory.
Mirai Nikki/Future Diary is the top tier of anime, and the one that set the standards for plot twists for the media (one that was only matched by Attack on Titan). Really worth the watch, specially because it's only about 25 eps long and is a complete package. Also I really recommending checking the endings, the songs for the 1st and 2nd ones are awesome.
As for other recommendations, I'll keep voting for That Time I reincarnated as a slime, RWBY and the most insane one: So I'm a Spider, so What? (yeah, that's the name of the show)
Future Diary / Mirai Nikki is an amazing anime, the main characters take time to grow on you throughout the show but by the end its amazing. The best anime usually take time for characters to grow on you though, thats character development.
I also continue to recommend the Higurashi openings, that series is disturbing yet beautiful.

Mirai Nikki was one of the first manga of the author and the story is totally crazy with a heroine more important then the MC. She's one of the best known "Yandere"(someone who kill as easily as they breath, for love or not). And yes there is 3 romances and it turns around the one between MC and heroine but it still a crazy survival game between ppl who can see the future xD
You are right. It is a romance. A romance with a yandere - a character archetype where the person is borderline psychotic with their feelings about you. It's not a "I'm jealous of you talking with other girls so I'll tell you about it." It's "I'm jealous of you talking with other girls so I killed them all." type of deal.
Basically, it's a battle royale. The participants have diaries where they used to write about certain topics. Now their diaries tell about the future related to those topics.
The male MC wrote about what he saw, so now his future diary shows him what "he will see".
The female MC wrote about what the male MC did (she's in love with male MC and is quite obsessed with him), so her diary tells all he will do.
Both are participants on the battle royale and only 1 can win.
On a side note, if you love dark anime, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni ("when they cry" is another name for the series) is most likely the best of the older ones.
That first song alone deserves a full reaction on itself, using the original music video, with lyrics on (the official video has lyrics in lots of languages). I recommend 👍🏽😊
