I have to admit that I was that stupid kid, but my parents loved me enough not to let me fall. I was accepted to NYU- no scholarship. My dream school. My Haitian mom and dad said they can only give me 5k a semester 10k a year, at most. It was up to me if I wanted to attend NYU but 10k is all I'm getting. I didn't want to pay the full tuition so I went to a CUNY school and paid 4k a semester. Thankful I did. I make 80k a year now and really don't think I would be making anymore if I went to NYU.
Carol T. I don't think so? As long it's NOT a for-profit institution that has a poor reputation, like University of Phoenix, I highly doubt college choice matters substantially for most people in the marketplace.
I've seen you post on his credit card rants. You think credit cards are great because of points, miles, and whatever garbage they offer. You're not a true Dave Ramsey fan until you cut up and close those credit cards.
Mike Nelson I don’t see anything about credit cards in this comment... 🤔
I so wish I was more serious about school. All I wanted was for high school to be over. Thankfully I've been able to grab a cdl and a union job in hazmat to secure a decent lifestyle. It makes me happy to see youths do well in education and have a plan for a successful life. Keep it up! You're killing it!
Green Revolt City University of New York
Friend of mine has $150,000 in Student Loan for an English Degree.
She is so delusional about her job prospects it's quite sad.
But hey, minimum wage jobs are beneath her. She went to "College."
I don't understand how someone can go that far in debt. Even if you add up all the credits and do the cost of the entire tuition with books, it only reaches $40,000 - $50,000. That's for in state also. But that's for a 4 year degree and that would be about $11,250 a year, subtract grants and such ( I got about $6,200 from grants working full time) and that leaves you with about $5,000 est. a year in debt. But if you just work full time, you can pay that off in a year and do that for 4 years and you will be debt free.
Steven Magallanes there should be a MANDATORY first semester course, explaining in full detail how funding higher education works. It should be taught every year of high school. Even better: teach it along with a driver's education!!!!
They won't because they want debt slaves. They want you trick you into taking out a lifetime of debt that you can't get rid of even in bankrupcy.
+shaochia vang EVERYTHING she has bought since graduating high school up until this year has been with student loans. Her last year of college she decided it was time to get work experience.
English is a hard language to grasp. :-)
My favorite was Dave yelling "Stop it" as the calm guitar played
The juxtaposition is hilarious
I went to a community college for a couple years, transferred the credits to my in-state four year University, then graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree. Worked part time while in college and graduated with about $15k in debt. That was back in 1993. I paid off that debt within a couple years and now I am making six figures with zero debt. I didn't have Mr. Ramsey back then, but I feel like I followed his plan. $15k in student loans for an engineering degree is a pretty good ROI.
It's interesting how calclus equations work the same no matter how much you paid to learn them.
I took the same path!!!
nobody cares
@@user-fp8xc8lf3f 56 people do. ya schmuck
I completed undergrad and graduate school by working 3 jobs - no loans. Retired 10 yrs early and own my home and planning to see the world God created. I did all on my own. Never lose sight of the prize because your life goes by faster than you think.
Wow! Job Well Done!
Stupidity is a politician's best friend.
THAT SHOULD BE ON A T-SHIRT!
💯💯👏🏼👏🏼
After spending 4 years and a TON of money in college I always advise kids, especially ones that are unsure about what they want to do, to tart at a 2 year college and take their prereqs. It's cheaper, you can live at home, and you can work then you can bachelor's if you want it.
Same here. I have 2 babies and thinking about their education, that's exactly the route we're looking toward right now. 2 years community college and live and work from home. Unless they can get some great scholarships.
BORFU that's how I did it, but my degree is Psychology.
how about tell them not to go to school and go to work
Can we please put more of the blame on counselors, teachers and parents? They are enabling young kids who have zero concept of money. Yes, the kids have a part time job in some cases but they do not understand cost of living, debt, interest or basic personal finance. Most high schools aren't required to teach this basic concept. Plenty of adults are guiding students (regardless of cost, GPA) to college because the adults don't know any better. Also, we can't expect most 18 year olds to have the economic foresight to know what will be in demand or what will pay off FOUR OR FIVE years down to the road. This stuff drives me crazy.
LTJuni0r I agree to some extent.. the school system needs to be drastically changed to include these important subjects and in the mean time, parents need to let their kids know the importance of these issues. Ultimately though, once someone becomes and adult, they need to accept responsibility and do their own research. We are living in an age of information.. anything we want to know is at our fingertips and each person needs to have the desire to improve their life and know these steps. I know plenty of people I went to school with who would rather spend their time and money on things they want to do rather than they need to do. It's the downfall of being a Millennial. I was this way too until I made the choice to be financially responsible. I think if we start teaching this earlier on in life/schools it will help a lot!
Curriculums are determined by the State and local school boards. Teachers are so overwhelmed with meeting quotas and standardized testing, they have little time for anything else.
Had guidance counselor’s and parents tell me student loans weren’t that big of a deal as I freaked out how expensive it was, they convinced me knowing the tuition amount, it was only a small amount of what I’d make. They were wrong. If you don’t feel comfortable with the amount don’t do it, adults don’t always know better
College system needs an overhaul. Massive money grab- I couldn't believe it when I was paying $400 for each textbook which I would use for one quarter. People in the 80's would finish college and pay their loans off within a year of graduating.
To add insult to injury the bookstore buyback value is absolutely pathetic. You're better off selling the book through Craigslist to get your money back. I think I only sold my freshman textbooks on Craigslist and kept the rest of my textbooks from that point on.
Yeah...that's because in the 80s they heavily subsidized Post-Secondary Education, and tax-cuts that gutted funding that made access to Post-Secondary Education possible hadn't been fully realized yet.
If you want someone to blame for the cost of Post-Secondary Education: Look at people like Dave Ramsey, who preached Ronald Reagan Politics that preached breaking the system they themselves benefited from. (shrug). When my father went to college he could work a fulltime job over the summer (minimum wage) and pay for BOTH semesters of tuition. Teachers/Professors are not being paid radically more than they were at that time...it was Administrators (mostly who came from the private sector for cushiony public sector jobs) that jacked the prices up to pay themselves, tax-cuts and a failure to maintain the system they benefitted from.
Not to mention the obsession with College Athletics that Boomers demand be made available for basically free, while the students of today pay for it. While I was in college at a D-1 school; my Tuition subsidized Athletcs by the tune of about $900/year, or $3600 for the life of my degree while there. That's $3600 I'll never get back in "student fees" that went directly towards flushing down the toilet on D-1 Athletics. I'd much rather pay that $450 a semester to buy books than to support freaking Athletics...but I didn't get a choice because of Boomer Alumni who demand something for free at my expense.
I love having no student loans. As a nurse most of my coworkers have 30-120k of student loans 10-15 years after graduating. I went to to school for 6 years and never had any debt. I know plenty of people just like me
"Loser language" Love it.
I waited tables and served in the Army Reserves while attending community college. Eventually had my own business which ultimately failed but now how a fantastic job.
It takes discipline.
Not to mention so few jobs need a degree and there are a great deal of jobs that need people to work them and require no degree and pay well but no one wants to work them.
What Job pays well with no Degree? Just curious-
My mom always told me "do not get credit cards" "do not finance a car" " do not get loans" she hates debts. I didn't listen to her and now I'm screwd. For. now ...
Lesson learned I suppose.
Next time...... LISTEN TO YOUR MUM.
Stay blessed.
If you are going to college for anything other than law, medicine, or engineering you are delusional.
Gordon Freeman does IT/computers fall under engineering ? 🤓 lol
Well, law not so much anymore (business degrees/management/marketing can be pretty good). Engineering is definitely an awesome degree. As a computer scientist, the number of available, well paying jobs is hilarious.
Not true
Gordon Freeman I agree
Gordon Freeman Spoken by a person who'se writing on a laptop sold to him by a person with a college education, taught English by a person with a college education. Yeah.
Dave Ramsey has changed my life. Thank you to Dave Ramsey for all the information you share. I would not be where I am right now if my big brother never told me about you. In less than a year of following Dave Ramsey I have had NO late fees or bank charges. I have cut my total debt by 25%. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!
key word for parents is "help", it is not our responsibility to continue to raise kids but if you choose to help, great; but never allow college funding to interfere with retirement funding or you will become a burden to these spoiled kids instead of a blessing. Any young adult graduating can work and cover the costs associated with tuition and fees after going through the FAFSA process. I went to community college first, worked jobs the entire time through AS and BS degrees. Be prepared to budget, seek every scholarship offered and hard WORK. Do the work for your life, and don't blame others, especially parents who are just people themselves for your lack of funding. Welcome to adulthood, enjoy the hard long journey called life.
I went to school in state, starting with community college. I had couple rough patches (Job-loss, Moving, Etc), and it took me over 10 years to get a four year degree. So it took me an extra 6 years to graduate, but I have paid Zero dollars in loans and fees. I also have no credit card debt.
People try to shame me by saying ''Oh but you're starting at entry level late, you could have had a Masters by now like me." Meanwhile, they're paying back $500 a month in student loans, thereby negating the ROI from the masters degree. I make less, but am able to save more than all of them, though I am kinda generally broke.
I watch these "I'm drowning in student loan debt" videos, mainly to feel better about my brokeness, lol.
Based on some of the comments below...Dave's rant is completely validated.
I cash flow my university studies, I'm a senior with no student loans.
I love his rants.
Stupid people shouldnt go to college. College does not make stupid people smarter, it makes them failures, worst of all failures with debt!..............Stefan Molyneux
Preach Dave! 🙌🏼
"Stupidity is alive and well". Who ever thought otherwise?
I’m on a full ride at USC and I work “full time” making $50,000 in four months as a tax preparer
I'm still stupid and I'm 36!!!!!!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Jennifer Lazyfoot It's not too late to change
+Galbert-Kun Its always too late😂😂
Me too.... and I am 40 with a master's degree.
Sorry, start to get smart
Stay stupid. The smart people like myself need someone to laugh at.
I'm so glad my parents you know... taught me to think of these things. They helped me pay for school and I do have student loans but they are MANAGEABLE! I recognize it is my choice, my education, my debt, my situation. Not the tax payers or the evil 1%ers. Since when was it normal to vilify success and glorify victimhood?
We’ve had an entire political party in this country who’s entire purpose of existence is to do just that for decades.
One of the best advice my parents gave me is to go to school for something I can actually get a GOOD PAYING job in.
I lllloooooovvvvveeeeee his rants
Amen! I love these Dave rants
if you're going to have kids or already have them, do them a favor and open up a 529 and start putting money away in it. they can contribute as well, but help your kids out. no parents saved for college either and that's also why these kids all have loans. students have some responsibility, but parents who can afford to put something - anything - away can help too
EXACTLY! I wish my parents taught me about that! Those summer jobs where junior makes some money cutting grass or other manual labor, throw that money into the 549 plan and watch it grow! THAT is how you pay for college, it really is brilliant its amazing so few people know about it.
We started our son's 529 plan when he entered kindergarten. Put something in that fund each month. Worked very well for us.
It is refreshing to hear someone with common sense these days. All is not lost.
I took 52k in loans through my bachelors degrees, masters, and PhD. Started making 80k and now make 170k. It was worth it. And I still live off of less than 2k a month locked and loaded. Choose a good field and be hungry. And never forget where you came from.
I started at community college and transferred my credits to eventually get my 4 year degree. Smartest decision I ever made . No regrets and no college debt at graduation. :)
Dave Ramsey is so right and so funny. Dawn!
In Europe, it is even worse. Kids take higher education and work in branches not related to their education, wasting public money, their time and they don't have feels the pain of debt, that says them they did something wrong.
The ONLY way the government should fund college education is if the student enlists and serves in the military, gets honorable discharge, and THEN attends college.
Most, after getting out of Mom's basement, will then know what to take in college, and graduate with something they can use.
Dave's the king of truth!!!!!
We have this in Chicago! Millennials, right out of college carrying tons of debt, move to the most expensive neighborhoods in the city.
OK Dave, Thank you. Your radio show is now required curriculum in my household. This is the most valuable education my kids may ever have! I wish I had it when I was young. No beating around the bush here. You say it better than I ever could.
That's really a good idea 👍 Schools don't teach this.
Love these videos.
My school actually advised against us having part time jobs while following the curriculum. In a way, I could see why, thanks to throwing a bunch of gen ed classes we did not need on top. There are just not enough hours in the day when your major is more projects rather than tests (and not including the tests in the gen eds). The few college friends I know of who tried to do both burnt out and had to redo their classes. That being said, most majors are not like this at all.
Way to go Dave! Wish I'd discovered you before I (stupidly) signed for my very first student loans waaay back on 12/28/2004. Been working my snowball for 2 years now and on track to have my FINAL student loan paid off within 6 months and good-bye DOE FOREVER!
"Masters degree in German Polka History" - hey, I"ll get a job teaching it!
The voice of wisdom.
I love Dave ☺
i think the government should require one year of work force experience to qualify for a student loan
True across the board.
The loans also drive up the cost of tuition. College was cheaper when people were expected to pay for it.
My suggestion is life guarding!! My daughter is cleaning up with personal lessons and putting in work!! With her XCC scholarship and hard work she will have first year paid off with money to spare!! So proud!! Going in cyber defense as well!!
I know a young woman who got her Bachelors in nursing totally paid for through the VA due to her parent being a disabled Vet. She and her fiancée didn’t want to live on his pay, it was too restrictive so she got loans. She now has to pay off 35k that she did’t even have to get to pay for school. These loan programs are a total sham, the counselors push them and they should be just to cover the schooling. Makes you wonder if the schools get $ for how many loans they can sell! Ive heard Dave say it’s the fault of the parent but these parents didn’t even know about the loans until long after she graduated.
Thank you, Dave for speaking the truth. Trade school is an option that most kids won't consider as well. I have a degree, but I paid for it working the job I got from my Trade School education. My wife also makes great money from home from what she learned in high school Commercial Arts, (and many years of teaching herself along the way)
Whether it's college or trade school, saving up for it through a 549 plan will still work and its amazing how much it will help. Wish my parents knew about that when I was growing up, but they were still great parents and able to save up for it thankfully!
I remember when I was 18, I really wanted to go to a private college. That changed when I sat down with my mom and credit union... and we calculated how much that would set me back. It would've severely delayed other things I wanted to do in life, like buy a car, buy a house, travel, etc. The light clicked on in my head, and I began to understand why my mom wanted me to look at the nearby community college with an eye towards transferring to the University once I had my AA. By doing that I was able to stay out of debt!
I generally agree, but I've never seen anyone pay $15-20 to babysit, dog walk or mow lawns.
I pay $30 to have my lawn mowed, you can’t get any one for less.
@@generaljane7643 what state does that? LOL
@@potatoboris1534 you might be able to get some kid to do it for less, but if you have someone who is an adult they won’t do it for less.
Dave Ramsey's baby boomer generation were the ones who taught millennials to just go to college because when they were younger it was still possible to work your way through but education prices have tripled since then. That generation literally ruined the economy with credit card debt and sub prime mortgages. Millenials don't have the luxury to run up credit cards because it is so difficult to even pay for education. I am a millennial with multiple combat tours and am completely debt free with multiple degrees but it was incredibly difficult because of the mess Dave's generation made. And he is a prime example with his own Bankruptcy.
A coworker of mine was going to CU for a master's in ancient Japanese writing. I asked him what was his plans for that after school. Stated he wanted to go to Japan and teach writing. Don't know if he went throught with it or not. He spent untold tens of thousands of dollars for a potentially useless degree that has a very small marketplace.
Lol.. that is hilarious.
true true good advice... I would recommend the same... I did the opposite and had my parents co-sign a loan... and go to a top school... but there were a couple of things that helped me from avoiding a massive amount of debt (like a tuition discount)
people go to school to party and wonder why they ain't got any money... not thinking about the debts.
Truth!
I went to school in Puerto Rico where college is ''free'', got my degree but there are no jobs in Puerto Rico because the government tried to pay for the ''free college' by taxing corporations which then left. Now you have a lot of educated unemployed people who are lucky if they get a job flipping burgers in McDonalds, the brightest in the island are leaving to the USA with their degrees, they will not be paying state taxes in Puerto Rico, which is now on the verge of bankruptcy.
My parents were stupid. I had to dig myself out their stupidity. It's been horrible. I totally agree. Should've went to Stanford. At least they pump out Founders.
I see people charge groceries on 2 or 3 credit cards .
The MAJOR ISSUE here is that in a college they give u maybe some tiny percent of knowledge u need and in real you u have to study on your own a lot to advance onto higher levels and get more skills in a subject. So actually you can just BUY some recommended textbooks for subjects, pay even $1000 and learn everything on your own and the final effect would be the same. In college you learn some theoretical knowledge and it’s specifically in case of humanities where people just read books, have conversations, write essays and that’s it.
I got 4 years of college from ashworth college for 7,500.00 paid it out of my pocket.
Yes.....Yes It Is
To get a degree in archeology at UNH is about 40k. To become a certified survey technician is 40 dollars for a 6 week course. They both open up many of the same job opportunities one just costs 39,960 less and is 6 weeks instead of 4 years. Work for four years as a survey technician and you'll probably be able to move up to an archeologist. These kids need to realize that there is always more than one option.
Community College is so much better than state universities and bigger universities. Cheaper as well
i feel so bad for people just blindly walking into debt like its ok
Stupidity is a badge of honor nowadays.

Left-Handed Puppetry.
Lol
I am on my last payoff before debt free. My student loan increased my interest date for being late 14 days (2 years ago) after 15 years of on time payments. Nice huh? I cannot wait to kick out Mrs Sally.
I wish I heard this message years ago.
Our 3rd kid is in college now. College is much more expensive now then it was when I went.
While in college, get a job as a night shift full time security guards job that lets you study while at work.
How do I negotiate with my parents that I don't need to go uni but they are forcing me to as I need a degree
btw I wanna persue a career in real estate - real estate agent
I did not want to go to college. I had a job since I was 12, but my parents forced me to go even though they did not have the money to pay for it. Then when I had trouble balancing work and school and my grades dropped they made me quit my job. My parents were both drop outs who had various addictions. They assumed I would make the same mistakes I guess. I got tired of being forced to live a life someone else was choosing so I quit school and moved out. Just glad I did it when I only had 10k in debt instead of 60. Wish I had just moved out before going though.
Agreed. Once you're 18 your parents have no say legally, so you could have said "No, I can't afford college, I'll try to find some work. There's no source of scholarship money for me. I rather be in zero debt without a degree than $250,000 in debt living on the street. I'll work to earn my wealth and if there's enough money for college courses, I'll pay my own way."
I'm guilty of "listening" to my parents insistence of going to community college, where I had to borrow some to cover the balance of the tuition costs. Anyone who borrows money to go to community college, considering how cheap it is, is stupid. I'm stupid for doing so. Mea culpa.
I listened to the same "advice" and after the first year I said I wanted to quit, I have never seen my mother so upset.. Knowing I was causing that sadness I continued with university despite hating it. Now I will probably fail because I don't even want to be here and I have all the debt and wasted years that come with it! :)
Do what you want, not what your parents tell you.
If Dave had been my grandfather when I was 18 I would be debt free right now :P
He is so on the money..if anyone who does not have a scholarship goes right to a 4 year school they are just digging a giant hole.even if you need to stretch out community college to 3 years with a lower amount of credits to build up savings even more for the final 2 years at a university you will be doing yourself a monster favor over the next 10-20 years without payments..And also i can assure you that the graduation rate is in the 75 percent range and higher for students who actually worked and use there own money to pay for each class.we all know how much harder we try when we pay for things out of our own wallets.
I tell you what, I had one but justified not paying back and now I owe more than I originally borrowed but learned my lesson. but I tell you, wish I learned this sooner.
Gotta love a Ramsey rant first thing in the morning to get you all fired up.
College loans are the reason the prices are insane...eventually the bubble will burst. But college today can be done for a semi reasonable price...junior college, in state public education and live at home.
Time to abolish student loans
I usually agree with Dave, but he's making it sound so easy to pay your way through school without loans.... Not as easy as you're making it sound, Dave.
Musicfanatic / Not as a single income earner, for sure!!
@@lisabolig822 Not true. AA with Army Tuition Assistance. BS with GI Bill. MA with employer's tuition reimbursement. I did it. AS it worked out I didn't pay a penny for tuition. The GI Bill was above tuition costs and covered a lot of my books.
somehow very therapuetic to watch this
Who's getting paid 15+ hr for babysitting??
You can in big cities, but its not consistent. Average is abt $12
Poor Junior! German history 😁
I appreciate the debt-free goal, but it really is hard to get through school without borrowing. Scholarships and the FAFSA and most advice people give students really doesn't go far, especially for people in the lower middle class who don't qualify for much aid yet can't afford to pay outright. A part time job during school for little more than minimum wage won't even pay state tuition.
What is a good degree to get that is actually useful in the market place?
Omg i wish these teens & parents i know can listen to this. I told their parents and they shut me down and said they let thier kids make their own decisions. Because they believe, it doesn't matter how much you borrow, you can always pay it back. The teens wanna go out of state to a college b/c of a "friend" to do a course they can actually complete at a local community college. I have already made this mistake and i am telling them. But no one listens
I've never believed in getting into debt unless I know I have money coming that can pay it or even better, already have the money and not need to go in debt in first place. When I was in high school I would get a summer job and by the time I got to college I had more than enough to pay tuition, books, and even buy myself new toys like a computer. I'd get a summer job in college too and by the time I graduated I already had a bit of savings to buy a house. I don't understand these people that get into 5 or even 6 figure student loan debt.
Hey Dave. In Australia we can borrow a 0% interest student loan from the government which is paid back automatically out of your paycheck before tax and only when you are making over 50k a year (if you dont make that you dont pay it back). Is this a smart idea?
Josh B yes!!! Very smart if it was 0% here a lot of people could pay them back. With interest they double and triple the amount owed
"such a nice town, such nice people "...........DOUBLE TUITION...... .
I'm 30 years old and I misused my funds and now I pay out of pocket. So either way you are still paying for college.
3:30.; Most people don't even want to do that, these days...
I've preached this ever since I can remember.. you HAVE to research your degree!!! Being smart about financing your education is a different discussion but for GODS SAKE if you're going to take on debt to get a degree at least make it a degree that is actually in demand in the job marketplace! I was a kid and I knew enough to research ON MY OWN about how much I would be making and what type of job I would have! All the information is out there people but a good place to start teaching junior about the different majors is through the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Dave is right, we have a parenting crisis AND I would argue a common sense crisis in America. My God if I had a dime every time I asked a college age student what they were going to do after they graduate (by the way we are talking juniors and seniors in college) to which they had no idea, I'd be a rich man. But instead, these same individuals meet whom they believe to be the love of their life, don't even attempt to get financially established, and start popping out babies when making a combined income of $35,000 a year!
Cant stop seeing Mike from breaking bad
Dave, Polka music started in the Czech Republic not Germany.
I used to know this one guy that chose his college based on where his high school girlfriend was going to, lol.
So? I knew lots of couples that did that and ended up getting married. I tried to do that with my now wife, but I was sabotaged by my parents and was miserable the entire time as a result of it. Needless to say, they were not invited to the wedding and we don’t have a relationship.
Pay as you go or don't go.
Apart of the 48 percent wished someone told me this before.
My tip for people going to College and University is to get a job and use the income to pay for your tuition. Also, make sure that you go to an affordable College or University. I never had a student loan and I graduated from University. 🇨🇦😁👍
I agree with 99% of what Dave says, but I don't agree with his stance here. Without student loans I would not have been able to go to school (and I went to a local school and lived at home). My family simply did not have the money to help me. I had no money and made 7.25 an hour as a stock boy. Because I was able to get the financial aid, I was able to go to engineering school where I graduated in 4.5 years. I now make more than both of my parents combined. I came out of school with 24,000 in student loan debt. I am on track to pay this debt comfortably off in 2 years. And none of this would have been possible without financial aid from the government.
dustin s Yeah but with no student loans college prices drop also alot since they don't get a open check book to charge crazy prices.
Mark G I agree with you about tuition prices.
I don't know the answer to the problem but in my opinion taking away government financial aid is not the answer.
100% agreed. A little surprised at the stance on this one.
But, you used your debt wisely. If everyone did what you did, our country wouldn't have such a huge educational debt problem. You saved a ton of money by staying local and living at home and went into a career where a degree is needed. So many people head into college with no clue as to what they want their end result to be and in the process take on so much debt that it might as well be a mortgage...and maybe don't even finish college in the process. Or, they get a very expensive degree in a career where they won't receive an appropriate return on that investment.
Your assumption that you couldn't have went to school without student loans is false. You could have went into the workforce first, saved the money to go to college, and then went debt free.
