After 10 years of being natural I have finally realized that less is definitely more. I don’t need all the things I thought I needed. I am excited to be getting through my stash and ultimately being free from product junkie-ism. Wash, condition, moisturize/style is freedom. I love washing my hair. It’s relaxing to me as well. Thanks for sharing!

I have come to the same realization. There is really no need to be so formal with our approach to hair. I've grown it and cut it off, did all the right things and still got damage...I'm not living for hair...I'm living for me

Once I released myself from the shackles of cycling deep conditioners and protein treatments and all that, my hair got so much easier. I treat monthly with a balanced deep conditioner. I shampoo and rinse-out condition all the other wash days and it’s fine.

Full transparency I never deep condition 😶. I guess I am just a lazy natural. I honestly just wash/ condition with products that work best for my hair health and my hair flourishes. Main drivers are keeping my hair hydrated and keeping those raggedy ends clipped (they are never cute). 😆 🤣 😂

I’m feeling you on loving your Afro. I’ve been natural for years and didn’t manage my hair. I just was over relaxers. I’ve finally started to try growing and taking care of my hair instead of cutting it low. And while everyone is so obsessed with curl patterns and stretching. I love what I call ‘high hair’. I love the fact that my hair can stand up in the air rather than fall. I’m so in love with my volume. Sometimes I think I’m the only one so it’s nice to hear another Afro fan.

I don’t have a particular routine either. I’m very lazy. I wash my hair every 2 weeks, rinse out conditioner once a month, deep condition once a month. I pre poo because it makes detangling easier. I don’t do the loc or lco method, I just twist my hair to stretch it, then apply grease to my scalp & hair butter the next day. I wish my hair was thick enough for a beautiful fro like yours! 😍

After 8 years of my curly journey, I too have found that I don't need all the products I thought. I have narrowed it down to about 6 mainstay brands. And when I buy any new products, they have be better than what I currently use or forget it. I also got away from thinking I had to use products from the same brand for my wash day. That was very liberating. Your twist outs are always on point. I wish I could do a twist out, but the arthritis in both shoulders prevent me from doing so.

you've articulated so perfectly the calm the fun of caring for my hair. A have too many products and most of them work well on my hair. I've narrowed down three lines used consistently with the bond builders in the mix always. As you say certain steps are not always necessary but that's the energy I bring to my hair. Im 64, with a decent head of hair. Im thankful for it and I handle it with loving kindness. And for those critics of the fro and big hair, they are secretly haters.

I use 2 to 4 products each wash day. A shampoo or co-wash, a conditioner if I use shampoo, then either UFD and Mop Top custard, or just Mop Top custard. So with that, sometimes I only use a co-wash and Mop Top. And to keep it even simpler, my products never change. Right now, I only need five products in my arsenal, and all of them go a long ways. I get away with less than $150 in hair products each year, because I only need about a nickel size of everything anymore, each wash day.

I truly enjoyed this video! I realized long ago how easy and simple my hair care routine has become, which I'm thankful for. I finally reached the point when I asked myself "what does my hair need?" If my hair still feels moisturized, my scalp isn't itchy by the end of the week, and I don't have time anyway, I probably won't wash it. I may wait another week with a refresh and restyle in between if I have time. I, too, enjoy having fun with my hair especially when it comes to color. Natural hair doesn't have to be difficult or complicated. Basically, keep it clean and moisturized. Maybe add treatments like protein here and there lol. Also, I'm glad you mentioned steaming because incorporating a steamer changed the game for me. It keeps my hair hydrated longer and it adds a pampered feeling for me to my wash days. I enjoy my wash sessions....most days lol

I completely agree. I’m so busy I wash my hair when I have the time sometimes it can be a week in between other times it could be 3 or 4 before I have the time to do it. I want to stress about the trimming your ends part! I hadn’t gotten my hair trimmed in about 2 years. At the beginning of this year. I ended up getting a good size cute because my ends were atrocious! That is one thing I will make sure to be consistent with! Never again

I went back to the basic incorporating a few of the new options, I don't add heat to my hair with the exception of a cool blow dry at the roots before braiding it up. I just need certain people in this community to understand, there are those of us who like and enjoy our texture, curl pattern and shrinkage.
You can’t push your insecurities on people who do enjoy it. If it’s not not your cup of tea, just move on. I don’t subscribe to everyone being natural for that reason-it ruins the dynamic of the community for those of us who are comfortable coming into normalcy with our natural hair. I’m ready for the bandwagon hoppers to go ahead and hop back off. It’s time.

I think I have the cleanse and condition Dow but I'm stuck on the coat. The LOC has me confused on wash day like since my hair has water is that my L or do I add a leave in or top with an oil then a leave in = water(L) oil(O) and leave in(C) and then a styler. I got the maintenance midweek I spray with aloe Vera juive(L) moisturizer (C) and top with an oil(O). It's just on wash day where like I said I'm stuck.. And no matter what anyone else says you have helped me a lot THANKS

    • @ALove4Me

Yea, water can be the L for sure. L stands for liquid, not leave-in so you could use either. Also, all three are found in leave-in conditioners, so you don't have to literally apply Liquid oil and cream.

I keep it simple: wash every 5-7 days, moisturize every 3-4 days. Shampoo, deep condition, leave in (my own concoction of aloe vera, glycerin and honey) add TGIN and olive oil (mixture of tea tree/rosemary and peppermint oil {hmmm...is this Mielle oil I did on my own??}) to seal. Thats it. Twist my hair and keep it moving. My friends and family are amazed at my hair growth. I'm not (well actually I am. LOL). Why? Because simplicity will ALWAYS equal continuous non- stop hair growth. I only untwist my hair if I'm going to a special event or hanging out. I rarely put heat on my hair, which is 2yrs ago in 2021 and do not go to salons (no way!) Detangle with my golden fingers only, trim my ends every quarter or 4 months. Ladies these trends will kill your hair and you don't need to become a product junkie and waste your coins. 14yrs natural, I cut my hair over the years from mid-back/tail length to shoulder length and it grows back every single time. Don't buy into the hype that natural hair is difficult, the only thing that needs to change is one's own mindset.

Are you at least putting water on it during that three months?Or wetting it in the shower and detangling? Because if I went three months, my hair would be a complete rats nest and dry, dry dry if I went three months and didn’t do anything to it lol I know you did a good explanation but I need to know those specifics please😂😂

A girl after my own heart. I’ve been in this game for over 5 yrs and I’ve followed you since then. I started with a routine b/c I was getting used to this hair on my head. Now I do whatever whenever. I shampoo deep condition and style and it’s a wrap. I do it each week or 2 or 3. It just depends on what it needs and when and when it needs it. If it feels dry I moisturize. If it doesn’t, I don’t. My wash day is not a day. It’s no more than 2 hrs total. Detangling is easy b/c I keep it hydrated. I trim when it’s needed. Every 3 or 4 months. But not a schedule per se. I just enjoy “Susan”.. I call her Susan 😂and that’s that on that❤
