@@strawberrysoulforever8336 Yeah, but it actually was MJ doing his voice and they felt like with the controversy around him it was better to be safe just in case he was doing it to "groom" as they call it. I didn't think they'd follow up with another perfectly cromulent batch of episodes, but then BAM, second encore! Season 7 is yet another amazing addition to the series' library. As noted, the attitude of the Mirkin Era is in full force here, maintaining a brilliant balance of jadedness, subversion, and playful tinkering. The show masters the art of grabbing the audience through having them relate to the absurd misadventures of everyone's favorite Springfield residents. There's definitely some mystery and intrigue just like Season 6 reveled in (Jebediah Springfield, Flying Hellfish) but more often than not, it's still all about the character driven adventures, diving into the deep dark pits of humanity's preconceptions, building off of what was already established makes every character tick. Homer challenges the general public's opinion about the morbidly obese. Lisa wants to make some friends by changing her image. Bart gets caught trying to steal a video game, and then tries to reconcile with his mother. etc. etc. This is the character-savvy season, one would argue. This and Season 6 are both my all-time favorite seasons of any show ever made. Not to be overly sentimental or anything, but when I look back at when these episodes aired, and thinking Milhouse doing his impressions of sprinklers was just the funniest thing ever, the memories are just legendary. This show holds its place in my heart, even today, and personally, I think its humor holds up amazingly well to this day, due to the whimsical style and general jadedness and sarcasm. Some highlights from this season for me include the entirety of my favorite Treehouse of Horror of all-time (The giant advertisements wreaking havoc, Bart and Lisa's battle against Groundskeeper Willie's impersonation of Freddy Krueger, Homer's lapse into a CGi world), Bart and Lisa's attempt to help Roger Meyers Jr bring Itchy and Scratchy back in a clever parody of the real-life legal battle involving Mickey Mouse, the kids being put under foster care at Ned's place while Homer and Marge try to save them from becoming Flandereseseseses, Troy McClure marrying Selma in what turns into an empty relationship as well as his hosting of the 138th Episode Spectacular, Bart joining Grampa in his wild adventure to claim the treasure, the aforementioned dynamic of Bart and Marge over the holidays, Homer and his mother, Mona reuniting until she leaves again (one of the series' finest tearjerkers), Bart and Homer's epic battle against George Bush as "Two Bad Neighbors", the grand finale and reveal of Who Shot Mr. Burns (and the baby did it. Cough.), and, of course, it's no secret: the *Steamed Hams* episode. Legendary. Perfect. A masterpiece. Flawless. Legendary. My favorite episode in all of shows. One of the greatest animations ever created. ...Or you could just say that's pretty much the whole season. _Whew!_ Smell you next season, everyone! I feel like liver and onions! Would you like to play again? You have selected 'No'.
This is such a detailed and well thought out comment! I couldn't agree with you more. Completely spot on. Season 6 and 7 are two of my favourites seasons. With 22 short films about Springfield being one of my favourites.
Come to think of it, season 7 _could_ have made Who Shot Mr. Burns look like the episode where they jumped the shark. But it was handled so well, it just made the show flow seamlessly into a more subversive territory, all the while still feeling very down-to-earth. It's my favorite season too.
Truly fantastic! Season 7 rocks! These episodes have so many dramatic shifts. I’m a huge fan of 22 short films about Springfield, Summer of 4 ft. 2, King Homer, and many more. Gotta give special shout-out to Mother Simpson. That’s also a really great episode. Mona reminds me of my own grandma and I love the scene of Homer faking his death and the whacky Tombstone joke!
These videos are fascinating for a Simpsons fan born in 1996. I never distinguished between seasons or showrunners at the time watching reruns. It’s a real insight into what it was like watching the show as it originally aired
7:45 For the longest time I've been puzzled why the Radioactive Man episode looks so different, like an episode from 2000s. Finally I got the answer, thank you!
Probably my favorite season. Great season overall and there's a good season before it and after it, so you came into it from a great season and you know there's another great season waiting.
Season 6 may be my favourite, but I still love 7 for a lot of reasons. I don’t think it was the best with the outlandish stories, but it always felt like it was made by people who loved The Simpsons. Loved the characters, and loved the comedy. And that’s why I think episodes like Lisa the Vegetarian and Marge Be Not Proud are so iconic. I know they’re not the most universally loved episodes for one reason or another, but they’re honestly warmer and more meaningful than the earlier heart-heavy stories.
Season 7 is my favorite as well. However, my favorite episode is still You Only Move Twice. But I like to think it was a holdover from Season 7 because it's the start of season 8, and has a lot of similar elements of Season 7, like character self image.
The digital coloring of the episode Radioactive Man REALLY makes it stand out from the rest of the episode; it makes me think it's a later season episode as a result. ...Also, I think this might be my favorite season of The Simpsons, just for how many episodes I love are present in it.
Flying Hellfish is probably one of my favorite episodes of the entire show, which is weird to say since it’s like the least Simpsons episode of The Simpsons. Whatever. I’ll be in the car, dudes.
It's in my top 5, ever. Also, as Real Jims points out in another video, it could be seen as the final part of Who shot Mr Burns if we believe Grandpa could have done it.
Season 7 is definitely the best season of the show. It pretty much takes what made earlier seasons great, and built on them. Not to mention this season is great with balancing out humor with heart. Earlier seasons did that too, but this season had Mother Simpson which I consider the Jurassic Bark of The Simpsons. I think one of the biggest reasons I love Season 7 so much is because it has what also made Futurama so great with being hilarious while also being very earnest while tugging at the heartstrings as well as adding emotional depth to the characters. Another great retrospective from you Jim, and I look forward to seeing what episodes end up in the top 10 list.
This might be my favorite season from Lisa period. Lisa’s Wedding was the best single episode portrayal of Lisa and this season seems to have built off of that to make Lisa who she is now while also incorporating how she was at the beginning.
Brilliant, as always. Season 7 is my second favourite season, right after Season 6. It also has three of my favourite episodes, like Hellfish, Summer of 4 and the Sideshow Bob one about the bomb.
I once got in an argument with a guy who claimed that Season 7 wasn’t the “golden years” anymore and that the writers had already started to lose their touch. I can totally understand if someone prefers the more grounded atmosphere of earlier seasons, but holy shit Season 7 is such a machine-gun of bangers that I can’t comprehend why anybody would diss it this way.
I hope Bart on the road and or scenes from the class struggle in Springfield make the list or even Bart sells his soul or Marge be not proud or Bart the fink or the day violence died or flying hellfish (the title of the last one was too long to remember). These are some of my favorites from this season. Also season 7 is one of my favorites. I cannot wait for the top 10 season 11 episodes.
Love season 7. I agree it has its “modern” moments. Back in the day Homer getting fat and meeting his mother felt like very “new” concepts, as did the whole publicity around the shooting of Mr. Burns. That said, the opening of Bart Sells His Soul is such an iconic moment for me and is about as classic as it gets (and Milhouse is incredible in that episode). Also, Flying Hellfish is such an amazing action/adventure episode, it’s one of those fleeting moments of greatness, highlighted more by the fact that it’s practically the only one of its kind. One of my favorite seasons for sure.
I think season six is my favorite, but season seven has Bart Sells His Soul, which is my favorite episode. I see what you're saying about it being sort of an homage to season three. As a kid, I was convinced that A Fish Called Selma was a much older episode, probably from season three or four. It took some getting used to once I get the DVDs and I realized it actually came pretty late in The Simpson's golden years.
Season 7 is also a favorite season of mine, and while that's partially because I grew up with this season on DVD, I think it also goes beyond that. I know episodes like Summer of 4'2 were ones that I didn't get as a kid, thus little nostalgia, but now I absolutely love it.
Now that you mention it, four of those six outfits you show at 18:36 are Hit and Run costumes. This season is an MVP for material pulled for Hit and Run.
0:41 Comic Book Guy somehow got a segmentation fault from a "Hello World" program he wrote (the simplest possible program). I love the little details they had back then.
Just wanted to say this video came up in my recommended, and now I've gone and watched so many of your past videos! Wonderful insightful well articulated content - keep it up!
Despite season 7 being modelled after season 3, I think it's more accurate to say that it fits the mold of season 2's similar sarcastic, dramatic, and sentimental stories. Homer especially feels like his season 2 self here, being portrayed as ignorant and well meaninged, rather then outright stupid and aggressive in most scenarios.
It was my favorite season too and I think that it was peak The Simpsons. It was the most iconic to me too and what I think of when I think of The Simpsons.
I think you really feel the "next era" start to form here in episodes like Homerpalooza The large number of cameos, first half of the episode has nothing to do with the second, the jokes aimed at the cameos being about how great they are, Homer suddenly gets a new job, cartoon logic is amped up, and the screen lingering longer on jokes like "Rover Hendrix" - at the time named by the writers as the worst joke the show ever made lol
In fact, "Marge be not proud" is SO classic in its feel that I genuinely thought it was part of the the first three seasons (my guess was season 3 in particular). I was shocked when I learned it was as far ahead as season 7.
i think S7 is probably the most iconic one just because of 22 short films. even ignoring steamed hams as probably the best joke written in the entire series to the point the meme isn't even truly dead, it's probably the one people are quickest to jump to when it involves really funny episodes pure comedy episodes. I mean i made friends with a guy at work who was 30 years older than me just because we referenced the nelson bit in the episode. i dont think its a stretch to say its an episode that defines the series as a whole.
I love 22 short films about Springfield! Did you know they were considering a spin off show based on this episode called, Tales From Springfield. I'm going to do a video about it tomorrow on my channel
Hooray! I was looking for to this retrospective, because Season 7 is also my favorite season of the show! It is my favorite season because I feel that is has the highest percentage of episodes that I would classify as "good", or episodes that I would want to rewatch multiple times.
I'll stand by the "She probably looks about 25 years older now" screw the audience joke, because me and my parents watched a lot of CSI Miami with its dumb zoom and enhance stuff at the same time I had this season on dvd and the big "25" on the screen just gets me every time
Every classic Simpsons season has 2 universally loved episodes: for season 2 it was Lisa's substitute and Bart gets an F, for season 3 it was Homer at the bat, and Mr. Lisa goes to Washington, for season 4 it was Marge vs The Monorail, for season 5 it was Rosebud and Cape Feare, for season 6 it was Lemon of Troy and Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part 1, Season 8 was You Only Move Twice and Homer's Enemy. There's one exception though: Season 7. It had Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part 2, Bart Sells His Soul, Marge Be Not Proud, 22 Short Films About Springfield, and Summer of 4 Ft. 2.
I agree with the sense of 7 being one of the first “modern seasons”. While it calls back a bunch from 3 and 4, S7 storylines come off the success of the last 6 seasons and how established Springfield and the family was
Interesting that it's your favorite season. I think the fine wine is a great analogy. As an adult this season has a lot of stuff that will appeal to me. I'll have to rewatch it.
Seasons 7 & 8 are both my favorites. It's my personal favorite era of the show. 4-8 are magic, and as soon as 9 hits... idk, I don't feel as enthused to finish the season. I don't think I've ever actually finished Season 9 on DVD. I always kinda burn out, lol
I wonder, will The RealJims be covering up to (and including) Season 10 with his retrospectives? For me, the moment I saw 'Take My Wife, Sleaze' and 'Eight Misbehavin' (then the rest of Season 11) I felt something was very off and weirdly disposable about the direction the writing was going then. (Though I might add I'm not one of the Anti - Scully brigade, not entirely anyway. There were many other variables occurring that were affecting the show's quality at that point. Particularly that it had run for such a long and really fruitful time anyway - God! It seems like SO LOOOONNG ago - and the writing staff were changing dramatically at that point). Anyway, it would be interesting to hear RealJims take on the turning point into the downward spiral post the 'Golden Era' as his commentary is always very fair, understanding, well researched and genuinely affectionate.
That's uncanny. I remember Eight Misbehavin' as the actual pivot point I thought the Simpsons was 'off' too, that the plots were becoming too ridiculous and the dialogue too overbearingly sitcom-y and meta. I was hoping it was a rare miss like some of Season 9 and 10 (that had foreboding signs of the show's downfall like overplaying Homer's cartoonish nasty side but were still USUALLY good), but I still had this feeling with almost every episode after. It will at least be interesting to see if Jims gets all the way to Season 11.
The Scully Era is hysterical and has some of my all time favorate episodes. I wish Duncanville could be as funny as the Scully era. That show is such bland medocrity.
@@icecreamhero2375 And some of his episodes he's credited for writing, Marge Be Not Proud, Lisa On Ice, Lisa's Rival, are just some of the most perfect episodes aren't they? It came at a pivotal time, Scully being showrunner, and some of the episodes in season 12 are really great (+it's always a matter of taste too) but it did go off the rails around the season 11 area. Season 10 really.
@@ToonReel001 lol, like peas in a pod we are then 😉... Yep, there were warning signs in season 10 too, as you say. Particularly the Loch Ness monster episode. The resolution to that was... Hysterical at first but then.... Hmmm, I watch it again and it feels like there's no respect for the craft of comedy writing, for all the episodes and series that predated it and it kinda felt really disposable but in a way that was masquerading as anarchic but was ultimately felt empty. But yeah, I look forward the Jims take on series 8,9, 10... When and if he goes there 😊

_Whew!_
Smell you next season, everyone!
Thanks! Like RealJims, I’m very passionate about classic Simpsons.
One thing I love about season 7 is the weight gain episode. I believe it has the best Homer scream in history.
Come to think of it, season 7 _could_ have made Who Shot Mr. Burns look like the episode where they jumped the shark. But it was handled so well, it just made the show flow seamlessly into a more subversive territory, all the while still feeling very down-to-earth. It's my favorite season too.
"Stealing! Haven't you ever listened to the guy who gives those sermons in church? Captain What's His Name?"
"Whaddaya think I took you to all those Police Academy movies for?! For FUN?! Because I didn't hear anybody laughing!"
homer low key is hilarious in season 7 like really funny
I feel the exact same way.
7:45 For the longest time I've been puzzled why the Radioactive Man episode looks so different, like an episode from 2000s. Finally I got the answer, thank you!
Season 8 is my personal favorite but 7 is practically tied with it in my mind
Every episode is a banger.
This is one of the few channels I will drop everything to watch when I get a notification, and watch while my wife is in the room.
Same here!
'Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming' is one of my favorites of the season.
My favorite season. We had the whole thing recorded on a VHS and I watched it to death. Probably a huge foundation for my sense of humor.
So this season has Steamed Hams? 11/10
Probably my favorite season. Great season overall and there's a good season before it and after it, so you came into it from a great season and you know there's another great season waiting.
My favorite season in the whole series!
Same here! Which episode was your favourite?
That brief bit where you talked about chief wiggum makes me wish you'd do a Simpsons histories on him.
HellShotBoy Ikr
Season 7 has gotta be my favorite season, almost every episode is a banger!!
"That contains all the sugar in these episodes"
... Do do do do dooo
"Have you been up all night SUGAR DANCING?!"
I shouldn't get as excited as I do with these videos, but they really do make my day, so thanks! Can't wait for the top 10
Haha same!
It’s so fun and adventurous and entertaining. I love that episode, one of my favorites
It's in my top 5, ever. Also, as Real Jims points out in another video, it could be seen as the final part of Who shot Mr Burns if we believe Grandpa could have done it.
It’s my friends favorite episode as well. My boys Ox, and Asa, and Burnsy. Well maybe not so much Burnsy
This season is beautiful. Oakley & Weinstein will always be the Simpsons kings to me because of this and at least 2/3 of season 8.
This season has Gorbachev so it’s automatically the best
"I come with present for warning of house, instead I find you grappling with local oaf?"
Odd way of spelling Disco Stu
"now apologise for that tax hike!"

@@MaxiemumKarnage Odd way of saying your opinions suck.
Maaate 8:50 left me gasping for air for some reason
Bee plot 😂😂 my siiides! Your content is amazing by the way ❤
Brilliant, as always. Season 7 is my second favourite season, right after Season 6. It also has three of my favourite episodes, like Hellfish, Summer of 4 and the Sideshow Bob one about the bomb.
"MOOOOOOOMMMM, BART'S SMOKING!!!"
I've not clicked a notification that fast since the last retrospecticus. :-3
It's definitely a favorite of mine because it's the first season I saw as it happened.
where I lived in the 90's seasons 6 and 7 aired on a Saturday afternoon, after Baywatch and before an episode of The Wonder Years or Family Matters.
I find season 7 to be the best Simpsons season ever.
Agreed!
Not just that; it's straight-up one of the best seasons of any comedy show ever.
I agree
You know he's right I just skimmed through season 7 and had a hard time even picking my top 5, let alone putting them in order.
"grounded"
The show was already getting wacky before Season 7, those people are full of it.
God I love this channel. This was so well analysed - time for a season 7 rewatch!
P.S. also, until now, I hadn't realized Disco Stu first appears in season 7!
Dude, your breakdowns are unbelievably insightful. Thank you.
“You got the dud!”
I just love that line for no reason.
“This is the ‘steamed hams season!’” Have my like! :D
King Size Homer is in my personal top 5 episodes ever
literally all the biggest simpsons memes seem to come from this season. that means something.
Steamed hams, but it's an Oakley & Weinstein Spectacular.
Here's looking forward to The 138th Episode Spectacular being the one "clip show" to make the Top 10 (or at least the runners up).
Every one of your videos is awesome. Maybe just because I'm remembering so many good jokes, but I think at least some of it is good commentary.
Season 7 is my personal favorite. Can’t wait to see your top ten favorites!
Agreed! 22 short films about Springfield is my favourite episode
0:41 Comic Book Guy somehow got a segmentation fault from a "Hello World" program he wrote (the simplest possible program). I love the little details they had back then.
"bart's friend" that shit never gets old
Just wanted to say this video came up in my recommended, and now I've gone and watched so many of your past videos! Wonderful insightful well articulated content - keep it up!
Thank you!
Ahh, my favorite season.
Edit: I see you are a man of taste as well.
I think you really feel the "next era" start to form here in episodes like Homerpalooza
The large number of cameos, first half of the episode has nothing to do with the second, the jokes aimed at the cameos being about how great they are, Homer suddenly gets a new job, cartoon logic is amped up, and the screen lingering longer on jokes like "Rover Hendrix" - at the time named by the writers as the worst joke the show ever made lol
In fact, "Marge be not proud" is SO classic in its feel that I genuinely thought it was part of the the first three seasons (my guess was season 3 in particular). I was shocked when I learned it was as far ahead as season 7.
same. It felt so much like a s3 episode
That episode is just so sad.
I wonder if it was originally written for S3 but it got left in the script pile for a few years til S7 started production.
@@rayvenkman2087 Very possible!
It's too real for a comedy cartoon series, it genuinely makes me uncomfortable.
i think S7 is probably the most iconic one just because of 22 short films. even ignoring steamed hams as probably the best joke written in the entire series to the point the meme isn't even truly dead, it's probably the one people are quickest to jump to when it involves really funny episodes pure comedy episodes.
3 years later and the meme STILL isnt dead.
season 7 already.....now i got to watch the earlier ones again, sweet!
This was very well thought out, all nineteen minutes used to the fullest!
Hooray! I was looking for to this retrospective, because Season 7 is also my favorite season of the show! It is my favorite season because I feel that is has the highest percentage of episodes that I would classify as "good", or episodes that I would want to rewatch multiple times.
I'll stand by the "She probably looks about 25 years older now" screw the audience joke, because me and my parents watched a lot of CSI Miami with its dumb zoom and enhance stuff at the same time I had this season on dvd and the big "25" on the screen just gets me every time
Every classic Simpsons season has 2 universally loved episodes:
for season 2 it was Lisa's substitute and Bart gets an F, for season 3 it was Homer at the bat, and Mr.
While it calls back a bunch from 3 and 4, S7 storylines come off the success of the last 6 seasons and how established Springfield and the family was
RIP: The Steamed Hams Meme.
Gone, but never forgotten.
RUclips won't allow it to be forgotten. I still, to this day, get those videos recommended.
I hope he goes all the way to season 31. Actually I want to hear his take on the new Simpsons.
