She has five son and none of them live with her? Is their kids having mental issue to have left their old mother alone in such a dilapidated condition? Is Korean fast losing their beautiful culture of respecting parents let alone elders?
Even before I have a job my younger brother support our family and my studies as he was the first to have a job. And now I support them with half of my monthly salary goes to supporting my parents and my brother kids school fees. I run my own family in the other half. Because this is typical Asian culture. Supporting parents when they are old and supporting each other among the siblings.

The other sad part is local media ignore them....May be the media there is interested only in K-pop or K-drama related news or only celebrities news...I hope through this channel it awaken the local govt. or public awareness in regard to poor elderly conditions and take some pragmatic action to ameliorate their situation.

I really appreciate this video and hope to see more videos to come that show the realities of living in Korea.

Asian Boss *IF* I had been invited to join your crew there in South Korea {me coming from Australia} I'd want to pack in my luggage cardboard boxes to donate to this unfortunate old lady to sell. Although the amount of flattened boxes I could comfortably fit wouldn't make a difference at all. So then instead i would have brought in my luggage some food for her, rice meal packets. I'm sure there are people living in poverty in *EVERY* country around the world. This woman in the video has a home. I'm *NOT* suggesting in any way she didn't or doesn't need your help. Only thinking that there are plenty of other examples in South Korea who are of various ages and some who of parents with school age kids who {unlike this woman} don't have shelter {are homeless}. 😧 🎅 👍 🍱🇰🇷 💸

I felt lonely, when I tried to be really good Christian and I was doing all my best not to sin. But, I see myself having better interactions with people, when I am completely free. Therefore, I can swear, watch porn, eat meat on Friday, and I am just united with people around me. I love God, and I believe that he is there, but I bring more love and peace to this world, when I'm completely free to do anything I want.

Do you know the history of poverty and inequality?
What would you suggest to the people (all of)whose earning had to go to the landlord left with no money to eat like in the time before the French Revolution?
      It never happened before?
Here's the laws of the capitalism say,
Return on capital is ALWAYS greater than the economic growth.
Larger the capital, the larger the return, which also means that as the time goes by the capital growth will be accelerated(assuming the return will be reinvested).
Concentration of the wealth will end in the increasingly fewer hands.
What do you see in the future?
      Economy gets better or worse?
Which is greater, the chance of you stepping up the social ladder(becoming richer) or falling and eventually become one like lady in the video?

People seem to forget that if she's 82, her children must be at least 40-50 years old.
There aren't many job opportunities for unemployed 40-50 year olds. It would be near impossible to get a part time job, because there's a surplus of younger people in their 20s and 30s that want that job as well. It would be also be impossible to get a full time job, because no company will hire you. The only work you can really do if you're in a situation like that is manual labor like working at construction sites.
Still very unfortunate. Even if her 5 children chipped in $10 per month, that would be $50. $50 gets you around 20kg (44 pounds) of rice which would help her out alot.

NADA, I bet you've never had to take care of someone possibly permanently that could possibly, essentially maintain themselves; it's exhausting psychologically & physically, because once they start relying on you they start expecting it and you've found yourself a continuous obligation with no end til theirs. Which is extremely sad in itself because you know they'll never be the self-sustaining person that they were, possibly ever again.
They could live with her or have her live with them, if they even can, but once you let someone down that relies on you once your incompetence toward helping them is worse than not doing anything in the first place. Even if they did almost nothing and just kept her company would be hard just to watch her in such a situation..
I'm not saying it's right, nothing is right nor wrong, but it truly depends of a situation you know nothing about; not because you haven't gone through a similar situation but because you are not them and they are not you - It's very easy to say that you would do something different in another person's shoes, but you wouldn't; you would do the same exact thing as to be in that situation is not to only be in the same events yet to also be the same person with the same experiences and the same thoughts, within the same time as said person's situation. People are subjective, you can't just objectively juxtapose your veneration and their's via an alternative situation.

He said that his dogs loves him unconditionally. One day he left his home and rode a jeep, his dogs ran after him or followed him.. Then he took them with him. She would sit in a corner of a phone shop rain or shine... even in winter! Every time I saw her, I would buy vegetables from her and leave her the change. One day, when I was buying vegetables from her, she said she remembers me, and she gave me a bracelet. It was probably one of hers. That was the last time I saw her. She never came back to her post. In this world we reject the wisdom and traditions of those before us. That is foolishness. These are wisdom and traditions that allowed humanity to survive for the long run. The selfishness and near-sightedness of current generations like mine are those that struggle in materialistic dreams. They care more about fulfilling their bucketlist than the practicality of life in raising family and cultivating the next generation and cultivating success and culture. They only cultivate for themselves.

    • @Collettee6
      @Collettee6 5 лет назад +12

Government is not solely responsible for these elderly living in poverty. If it's your own mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, your own family, you should take care of one another. No matter how hard your life is too, they were there for you when you were little, needed food, education, shelter, when you needed them, now that they need you, you should take care of them, live together at the very least. Government, non profit organizations could help so much, but if the core of the problem, these elderly being neglected is not resolved, this case will never end. But then again, if others wouldn't do so, at least you should do it towards your own elderly. It's really sad seeing elderly being abandoned all the time with stupid reasonings like "it's too much work" or etc. So what if it's too much work? You just gotta do it. It's your responsibility as their family. How egoistic. I'm not mad. Just dissapointed. Even if someone you know abandon their elderly easily, and it's a normal thing to do, it doesn't mean that you should do the same. Do what is right, not what everyone does.

I think foreigners may not know about the negative aspects of Korea because many media show only k-pop in Korea or bright side of Korea. On the surface, Korea has a good economic level, but the gap between the rich and the poor is huge. As you can see in the video, there are a lot of elderly people who are actually struggling to pick up waste paper and get money from the state, but the amount is very small. Also, Korea's economy is getting tougher day by day, and prices are soaring, and its small amount of money cannot make it as human. I can't explain everything in detail, but not only the elderly but everyone else in Korea is in a difficult economic situation. Employment is not guaranteed even after college, and housing and prices are soaring day by day. Korea is becoming a country only for the rich. The government is focusing on North Korea and refugee issues rather than on policies for the people, and politicians who need to lead the country are only for their own interests and the media is also controlling it for their own interests. As a Korean citizen, the reality of our country is too vague. Thank you for making this video to promote Korea's negative side. (I am not good at English, so I wrote through translation. Please excuse me for my uneven writing)

If she was 82, then her children's ages probably range from fifty to sixty, which means they have to feed themselves, their spouses and their children, or even grandchildren. Maybe themselves were eating rice with soy paste. When you're poor, sometimes you don't have choice but to abandon someone. Most people would abandon the elder not the children. When you don't have money, there's no thing called retirement. You need to work until you die. So even she managed to live with her children, she still has to work.

Sure no country is perfect, but this is seriously jaw dropping for an East Asian country. Aren't you supposed to show absolute respect for your elders and make sure they live comfortably when they retire? What is going on here?
It makes sense for a small portion of elders to be in this situation. Sometimes it's pride, or a lack of desire to live in a more modern place, or perhaps the family is genuinely all poor. But on the scale of millions... this is strange. Could you give us a little insight as to what might be happening to cause this?

My suspicion is there's a serious flaw in the GDP per capita index (PPP - Purchasing Power Parity). Along with other countries, the PPP of S.Korea and the US are rising steeply while the portion of their populations living in poverty is increasing. How is this possible? For one thing, in the US, the Consumer Price Index - used to measure inflation - doesn't factor in costs for housing, education, health care, energy, and transportation because these a considered "too volatile".

This can happen in any society, any generation, any level of ethnic homogeneity. If people are culturally brainwashed to hate paying taxes, a government does not have the financial nor political ability to create social welfare. Even countries with much smaller GDP's can afford to systemically take care of the elderly through higher taxes. It's doable but the problem is the conservative mentality that is anti taxation and social welfare. Policy and legislation matters far more than any magical effects of ethnic homogeneity.

The problem may not be with the children not wanting to take her in.
I'm sure they did the "why not come live with me" speech and most Asian elderly will try to assert their independence and family honor by avoiding becoming burdens.
There are plenty of parents who will "reassure" their children that they are getting by and don't need help.
The children probably then say, well, you know we are here for you if you ever need it. And don't know the truth.
It is even better if they have many children, They can then say, I'm fine, if I need help I'll go to X's house.
My Chinese great-grandfather did this to his 5 girls until one day they got together. (His 2 sons had already died) He then tried to claim he didn't want to burden just one child or bounce around because they wanted to share the responsibility.
In the end, after they told him point blank that him living alone was NOT an option, he decided he wanted to live in assisted living and they all pitched in to pay instead.
But it took a while to prove to him he wouldn't be a burden.

In Korean society, many people try to help out these elders by pushing the carts with them and helping them, but I hope that more people help them financially as well. It is told that this year's Korean winter will be the coldest of all time, so I hope they could at least heat their houses and stay warm.

that is a MISTAKE! do not help these elders with their work! by doing things for them, you make them feel useless and make society feel like they're not worth HIRING! elders not only should be looked at as fragile but give them the ability to work so they don't have to rely on picking up trash!
that's the problem with Korean society! no one would hire them because you all think they're helpless. such a BAD WAY TO THINK ABOUT THESE OLDER GENERATION! in america, we are all able to work as long as they want to.

I think you mis-understand a lot of the situation Younguy ...
Helping people is a sign of respect and human kindness. If you help me do a simple, tiring, yet necessary part of my job, I would not feel bad, I would feel grateful. If you help a person pull their cart for a while, you're damn right they'll feel good too. You must not receive much kindness in your daily life if you don't know this. ...Perhaps this is a lack of good Karma ....
Should these elders be hired? Well, I guess they deserve the opportunity if they want it, but really in a country as wealthy as Korea, you'd think they could spend a little more on their social assistance. ....In "america" (I guess you mean The U.S.A.,,,,since "america" is two whole continents) the elderly are also not readily hired, often for the same reason these people face challenges. Social assistance programmes also amount to (slightly) more than Korea though. What are you talking about?

roland france I think she was just happy to have visitors. The money shouldn’t have been given in the video but behind the scenes. The thought was kind but what if others would know and take advantage of her? I can see the sadness on her expression. Some say it’s positive outlook but it’s just a mask. It is a sad thought that she may die alone with no one next to her at her final moments...

ding dong Even not providing her money, once upon a time people in Asia got their elder with them at home, but this woman is too much pride for remember her sons their duty. Also it seems they are struggling for not having a decent job because at least didn't finish studies and in Korea this is the first step for being doomed entire life to earn always insecure underpaid jobs with no health insurance bonus neither a serious social pension plan. Sooner or later her sons will be doomed to same destiny of this poor lady.

@@raffaeleirlanda6966 it doesn't really work like that anymore. It was once like that but anymore. China and Japan struggle with this problem too(tho in Japan they get a bit of help). It's really expensive to live in asian countries (in the cities) since the prices are VERY high. Korea has also a problem with their academic pressure. They have to learn about 15 hours a day and get about 4 hours of sleep only. Its hard to support your elders under this conditions. They dont have this attitude to help others or even your family and risking your own career by it. Its hard but this is their mentality. Especially if you think about that asia sticked with the 4 2 1principe for a long time, the the children always support 3 generations but now its just not more possible. Its not the same in western countries, luckily.

laurentiu druta, do not generalizing entire Asia, try to visits south-east Asian, they are completely different compares to East Asians. You'll be surprised by how they treats their family especially elder people because it is the way the culture works there and they are also known as family oriented. Go to Western side of Asia and South Asia too, you'll be amazed by how their culture works unlike South korea

Oh my word! Thank you so much for covering this issue! Upon arriving in Korea, the huge amount of elders living in poverty STUNNED me! For a culture where status is dictated so much by age, I was not prepare for the immense amount of elderly living with nothing! It is so sad to watch woman literally completely hunched over pulling a huge cart of boxes day after day. They are so old yet they bend over time and time again to pick up trash for pennies. They kill themselves sometimes because they dont want to spend the end of their lives this way. Thank you thank you for bringing light to this issue. It's tragic!

Because you have a good heart dear. We struggle sometimes because bad things happen to us. If we loved each other so much someone could have sent a secret agent to poisen Kim jon-un that pig dictator. Does he ever see himself in the mirror every morning? He should be fearful of God Almighty because on judgement day, he will go straight to hell without even see the face of God the Father. That beast has to have many demons around him because he doesn't have a human conscience!
