- Join us on an unforgettable journey as we embark on the 34-hour standing train journey across China. We start as always by collecting a coffee and snack before heading down Chongqing station to our train. Trouble strikes early as we are faced with difficult train guards who move us to temporary seats, again and again. We sit in amongst the busiest train of our lives, making new friends, interacting with Chinese Police questioning our motives and more. We keep things light hearted with a European picnic and some fine wines before dancing on the platform before bed, and by bed we mean more chair. Waking up groggy to face the harsh reality of another 10 hours, we begin our countdown but not without unexpected issues. During the night our train ran out of drinking water, leaving us dehydrated and being assisted by the police. After what feels like forever we arrive in Ürümqi in the Xinjiang province victorious. The end of the line marks the beginning of our new adventure.

The 34 Hour journey was excruciating and painful. But, as I said clearly in the video, we were surrounded by great people. Friendly people who we shared jokes with and were comrades through the uncomfortable 34 hours. Even the police guy, again which i report in the video, was a very nice man and looked after us throughout the journey. Even personally bringing us water from the staff's office when the train ran out of water.
The Chinese people are some of my absolute favourites, we were in this together and we respected each other. I think we all hated the conditions but had an adventure together. That's what you will find on my channel.

Thanks to these two cuties, u guys achieved a big challenge. The reason why the tickets they oversold is maybe u r in holidays? And if it is during holidays, ppl from country side will wanna go to the cities to travel. However, due to the geographical environment, there will not be enough trains to take all ppl who r not rich or be thrifty to the destination they wanna go. So they sell the standing tickets and can be seated when on one there. This video reminds me I have took this train 11 years ago, it’s suffering when I was sitting 16hrs. Thanks the infrastructure development these years. Since abt 7years ago, I can easily take 5hrs high speed train to my home(4-tier city in China). Now, I just hope everyone can gain more money and enjoy the scenery along the way back home through new technologies:)

你们买的是站票，所以不能在卧铺车厢休息，你最开始坐的位子是为卧铺的上铺旅客休息准备的。所以第一个男车务员（不是警察）把你叫走，并穿过整个卧铺区域。
之后你半路遇到的是车上的警察，他提醒你，卧铺禁止拍照，因为这会严重侵犯了他人隐私（他没有说明）。
第一个男乘务员为你第一次安排的位置是他手机上显示的暂时无人的位置（因为你是外国人，语言不通，给你的特殊服务）。

You bought a ticket with no seats but the train conductor moved local people so you could have a seat next to each other. If you turn this around, do you think if a Chinese couple was travelling to UK would a English train conductor move their people for the Chinese to sit?

站票，却一直有座，肯定是列车长特殊安排给你们的座位。那个脉动的水，也应该花钱买的，那可能也是列车长或者乘务员自己掏钱买给你们的。
说的没错，那个座位就是预留给列车员的，我每次抢不到坐票都会去坐那个位置，因为列车员大部分时间不在这个位置上。
20多年前，我小的时候也坐过这样的火车36-42小时到杭州上学，每年过年往返都是这样来回，有过一次无坐票，站7小时的经历，以前火车上还经历过小偷半夜拿刀片割包偷钱的经历，当然现在这样的火车已经没有偷窃事情发生了，实际这两年轻人已经得到乘务员和列车长的特殊照顾了。即使如此，坐这样的火车，还是噩梦一样的经历，人太多过道都挤满，没有任何空隙的地方，空气混杂，只是不是所有人都喜欢这样的火车生涯，包括我自己在内。
这老外真是闲的，34个小时的路程居然买站票，给自己找难受。就算坐票都难受得要命。

这种火车现在之所以还在运行，一个是避免资源被浪费，火车还可以运行。
另一个就是便宜啊，虽然可能列车的运行距离非常长，但是大部分乘客都是中短途上下车，车会一直在走走停停，

1. Your ticket is a standing ticket, and there are no seats. You can use the empty seats, but you need to move away when others arrive.
2. If you don't buy a sleeper ticket, it is forbidden to enter the sleeper. As for shooting videos in the sleeper, it is very annoying. This has nothing to do with the law. Even normal people don't want to be filmed in the place where they sleep.
3. Train attendants rarely receive foreign tourists, and the methods for foreign tourists are cumbersome. In addition, you don't know Chinese, so communication is more troublesome.
4. The first reason why the police asked you to turn off the camera is because this is a sleeper. Shooting is very impolite and illegal. The second reason is that no one likes to shoot in the face. Everyone has the right to refuse.
5. I don't know much about the laws against foreigners, but for Chinese people, we can shoot Chinese police during law enforcement, and we have the right to supervise.

I appreciate your kind words at the end but it seems you took a lot of negativity from this video which i simply didn't portray. I never complained about the noise, i mentioned it and how crazy it was but in a thrilling way. I joked and laughed they way they shout at each other, but in a way of endearment. You saw me playing and joking with the people around me, being respectful with elder Uyghur gentlemen etc. I even made a specific recording so that I could tell everyone that the police man had looked after us dearly, even retrieving water from the staff room for us. When we say that the train ran out of water, I don't mean they couldn't sell water, I mean literally nothing would come out of the taps or the hot-water machines. Completely empty on water and it was 28 degrees celcius in the cabin with 10 hours to go. I even showed us eating some Noodles which we were able to get from the dining car before the water drained up.
Don't think negatively about this video, life isn't perfect and you will never find me making 'perfect videos' i make real videos about the reality of travelling in all different ways, including challenging adventures like this.

Thanks, I make videos all over the world though not just China. Also you should check our Beijing hutong video. You will never find a video of a foreigner going into the Hutong and drinking with locals - but we did. We're the only ones who have done this train. There are many videos on RUclips of foreigners in China, but we're doing something different regularly.

In sleeping couch no camera is allowed is quite reasonable. I bet you didn’t see famous China security camera there. That is reason the policeman asked you turn off camera, just like don’t shoot video in somebody’s bedroom. You are pretty lucky they help you find two seats, normally for ordinary locals, security guy in train won’t help them. Actually you were treated special.
Standing ticket 34 hours can not imagine, as long as you stand for more than 6 hours will be irritable. I might even jump out of the car.
Dude, I cannot stop laughing watching your video. You said it right at the start that you got the cheapest train but went into the carriage with bunker beds. After that you looked so lost and as if you got miss treated and escorted all the way to your standing carriage. You were filming in bunker beds and saying oh I do not understand why I need to turn my camera off, this really made me laugh ;) Why don't you make another video about getting an economy flight ticket and go sit in first class seat on your plane, and film everything and show us what happens ;)

You bought a standing ticket, which means that you don't have a fixed seat on the train, and the conductor kindly arranged a seat for you. The seats changed for the second time are exclusive seats for train staff, and these two seats are not sold to the public. I hope you can feel their good intentions instead of being disturbed.
Get free seats from the help of the train crew, that shows how Chinese ppl treat friends from far away

@@efei33 The staff asked these uncles whether they bought the standing -ticket and kicked them out before asking them whether they were going to go off at the next station, which means the staff never knew the information. After that, the staff still wanted to translate these two uncles to other seats, which demonstrates the staff only took care of how to give foreigners seats regardless of the local's feelings. To take a step back, why a standing-ticket person should give his or her seat to another standing-ticket person before he or she arrives?

in fact you guys must appreciate the police officer who find you seats since you bought standing tickets which means you can't sit in the sleeper. they might thougt you bought standing tickets mistakenly. even local chinese rarely buy such a standing ticket that takes more than 30 hours. so they might seem a little bit rude, but they were trying to help foreingers like you guys to follow the rules and survive your 32hours trip.

You can take a standing ticket for a short distance, but not for a long journey, say for more than 2 to 3 hours, definitely not for 30+ hours. This train is not only slow but also stops at almost every station. The people on this kind of green train are mainly local farmers and migrant workers. China may need some double-decker trains to increase its capacity. The situation reminds me of a similar experience riding a super crowded, sweltering, World War II-style, overnight sleeper train from Marseille to Milan in a hot summer some 20 years ago.
Nowadays, the green trains seem to be the lowest way to travel since travelling by the sometimes dangerous sleeper busses has been phased out.

First of all, it's one truly adventure and hard journey, not only for two non-citizen visitors, but also for native. Besides it's cost much less than other way. From ChongQing to Ürümqi, it will cost 200$(US dollar) at least by plane, only 70$ by Green-skin train(about 50km/h! there's no bullet train for this line yet).
And the man on train who lead Jacks to the seat, he's the staff of train, not police.It's his job to make train works smooth.If there's vacancy on sleeper compartments, he can ticket Jack from standing upto sleeper. As we can see from the video, it's a lot more passengers than vacancy, then he doing much warm heart than his duty, take the Jacks to some seats.
There's several passengers using standing tickets squatting at the junction of the train carriages, it's common on the train.
note: in China railway, 无座(no seat) means no reserved seat, u can sit on any empty seat.

However, many regulations on green trains are relatively relaxed compared to high-speed trains, for example, smoking is not prohibited on green trains.
2. If you want to go to a place where there is only a green train and there are no seats left, you can buy a no seat ticket first, and then after getting on the train, ask the conductor if they can get a replacement seat or sleeper ticket. Because there are people getting off the train in the middle, it is very likely to get a seat or sleeper ticket.
3. If you are unable to get a replacement seat or sleeper ticket, you can only randomly find a place to sit like Jack. It is not recommended to find a seat in the sleeper carriage because the ticket inspection in the sleeper is very rigorous. If you really can't bear it, you can go to the dining car for a meal, so you can sit for at least one or two hours.

1986 to 1990, I took such train from Chengdu to Shanghai, 48 hours, then 8 hours transit, then another 24 hours to Fuzhou to study. I slept under the seat or on luggage holding area, those were the best place to slept.

OMG! you guys really got the nerves taking the green train in China with a no-seat ticket. I worked in China from 1990 to 2016, I have never been on a green train. But you guys are lucky, the train stuff actually treat you very nice, give you special treatment in gettinvg you seats, otherwise 32 hours standing in a green train might make you nuts 🤣
But most of the people here won't follow the whole process you've been through, they get up and down for a few stops, and for people who really needs to transfer from place to place, It's the only way to solve it by selling no-seat tickets. You actually can pay for a bed on the half way once anybody gets off the train and the beds become available, just ask the conductor. Also, another way is going to the dining car, buy yourself a meal, You can have the seat forever.

As a Westerner, I believe you are one of the first or second to travel by the green train. This is not a Western tourist train; it is purely a means of transportation. It is very cheap but equivalent to its price.
The only reason people choose it is because it is cheap. The British are the least tolerant of speaking loudly or eating food in public, but for them, this is just a part of life.
Personally, the journey was excruciating and painful. But, as I said clearly in the video, we were surrounded by great people. Friendly people who we shared jokes with and were comrades through the uncomfortable 34 hours. Even the police guy, again which i report in the video, was a very nice man and looked after us throughout the journey. Even personally bringing us water from the staff's office when the train ran out of water.
The chinese people are some of my absolute favourite, we were in this together and we respected eachother. I think we all hated the conditions, but had an adventure together. That's what you will find on my channel.
