- We dug this old one up of myself, Chris Norberg, surfing in Newport Beach, California. It was filmed from around 1998-2001. Some fun little waves back in the day. I've also shared my first delve into claymation.
Newport Beach is renowned for its shorboardable , yet flickle surfing spots. Here are some of the most prominent surfing areas in Newport Beach, California, along with a brief description of the waves:
The Wedge: Perhaps the most famous spot in Newport Beach, The Wedge is known for its massive, bone-crushing shorebreak waves. When the right south swell hits, this spot can produce waves up to 30 feet. It's more suitable for bodyboarding and bodysurfing, but experienced surfers also challenge these waves.
56th Street and 54th Street: These are popular spots with consistent, good-quality waves. The jetties here help to sculpt the swell into nice peaks which are great for shortboard. It's got nice rampy waves, but the crowd usually sucks.
Blackies: Located by the Newport Pier, Blackies is a favorite spot for longboarders. The waves here are more mellow, making it a perfect spot for nose rides and stylish turns. It gets really crowded, regardless of how good the waves are.
40th-44th Street: This stretch has various beach breaks that are popular among locals. The waves are suitable for all skill levels, and it's a good spot to avoid some of the more crowded areas. This was our zone for decades, especially out from 42nd Street. I almost got arrested for surfing during black ball here once.
Lower Jetties: Another spot sculpted by jetties, offering consistent peaks. The waves here can range from mellow to punchy, suitable for a variety of surf styles.
Newport Point: When conditions are right, especially during a solid south swell, Newport Point can light up with fast, hollow lefts that break near the beach.
River Jetties: This was one of our favorite spots, and still is when we visit Southern California. It can get so good here and just drain down the beach. But, we've had too many ear and/or sinus infections from this dirty spot to count.
While Newport Beach offers a range of waves suitable for all levels, always ensure that you're familiar with local surf etiquette and respect the locals. Also, given that some of these spots (like The Wedge) can get particularly treacherous, always surf within your abilities and stay aware of the conditions.
