Your enthusiasm is contagious. Living in Myrtle Beach which is named because of all of the wax myrtle here I just might harvest some berries and try this. We use a wax melter to process the wax from our own honey bees. The wax melter would more than likely only work for large-scale wax myrtle refining. I do love how organic your candle looks without a lot of refining. Can you describe the smell?
I decided, and am now researching making northern barberry candles. One thing I found is that the wax becomes more brittle at a boil, as the oils evaporate out, so it's suggested that you simmer the water, then pour the water into a separate, heated mesh to filter the wax out. I'm also looking at mixing with soy wax or another plant-based wax to stabilize the candle while making them 100% vegan. Do you have any experience with this? If my first candle experiment goes well, I will be planting ten bayberry bushes on my property so I can make enough of them annually as a side-concern.
My husband and I were married on the beach at Sullivan's Island. We planted many wax myrtles on our property to repell mosquitoes and it is a hearty plant/tree. The birds love to get shade inside the wax myrtle and the berries in the summer heat. Now I will try this with the berries. 😊
I have a bunc of wax Myrtle growing around the perimeter of my yard so I looked them up to see uses and saw candles Found your very helpful information and thankful. Question, what do you mean by double boil, and can can you still make candles without an added wax? Thanks again!
Wow, that was so cool. I've heard of crepe myrtle, but not wax myrtle. I had no idea that was possible. I'm looking forward to learning more, thanks! I saw you on Prepping with Sarge.
Jonni, thank you for watching! I can’t believe how magical the fruit is-it is a TON of fun to work with! If you live along the Coast, definitely get out and forage some!
