I had a drive in Knoxville on two acres that was on both a steep hill and a curve! I poured concrete channels running diagonally across the drive like sergeant stripes. There were three of them that bled off the water as it accumulated down the hill. I went from having to rake gravel back onto the drive four to five times per year to never having to do it again.
Those rip rap ditches turned out really nice... Did you see how Brandon spread the fabric in on of his recent videos? I agree people actually need to listen and obey each other... thanks for the message. I enjoyed it..👍🙏
Driveway tarted up and looking sharp ! And you are correct. A lot of people hear what they want to hear 😬 However, when I talk to fire control, they have to listen to what I tell them, and that goes for when they talk to me, too ! But the customer is always right, no matter who they are..... until they are proved wrong ! And looking forward to the next access road build, too !! Can you repeat what you were saying, didn't pay attention 😂🤦♂️
2 weeks ago I cleaned out a 12" 35 foot concrete culvert that's been buried for decades. completely full (no gap at the top) of dirt and roots it took me about 2 hours to clean it out with a trailer jetter and excavator. Your customer's culvert would be easier than the one I just did. Ideally you'd use a Truck Jetter which is just a big pressure washer with a Jetter hose with rearward facing jets. Every municipality of any size has one and most drain cleaning companies have at least a trailer mounted unit that would work there. A truck mounted unit (70-80 gpm at 1500-2000 psi) would clean that pipe out completely in about 3 minutes if the debris has somewhere to go. That means the debris and water can't be backing up back into the pipe or the water will carry the debris right back in to the pipe. So ideally a Jet/Vac unit would be best and, like I said, take only a few minutes. Probably cost $700-1,200 depending on how far they have to drive to get there and if they can dump the debris onsite. Those trucks cost $350,000-500,000 and bill out $350 to 700/hour with a 2-3 hour minimum (I'm in Minnesota). A simple Truck jetter will work, but again, you have to deal with the water and debris. Alternately you can hire a local drain cleaning company with a trailer jetter (18 gpm at 4000 psi). It would take about 30-60 minutes to clear the debris out but there are a couple issues to deal with. The debris backup is a bid one. What I've done is have an excavator theret o bucket the water and debris out of a pre-dug hole. The other problem is water supply. Trailer jetters only hold 250-300 gallons and will only jet for 15-20 minutes before needing to be refilled with clean water. Refilling that tank from a garden hose takes about 30 minutes and you're being charged for all that time, of course. Price is probably going to be about the same as a Jet/Vac unit. Another possibility for debris control is to hire a pump truck to pump the pre-dug hole while jetting. Again, having a place onsite to dump it is important. Keeping in mind the costs, it might be cheaper to dig it up and replace it since that driveway isn't paved. There are cheaper more labor intensive ways to go about it that include a cable and tire like you mentioned, but they aren't always successful and can make things worse.
Hey thanks for all the good info. Probably least expensive way would be to dig it out I suppose. We are hoping a good rain storm will start the process since the ditches are clean and the erosion is stopped. Thanks
Nicely done,Sam 👍🏻! Dragging that fabric around is no joke, especially when it’s hot outside. That felt seems to make it hotter 🥵. Might blast that culvert with a bunch of water and get it mostly cleaned out. Couple IBC totes, trash pump and some pvc pipe might do it. I say might because I’ve never had to do it either. Saw my package at the end and was like “Hey ! That’s mine” lol. Great video and looking forward to the new road going in 👍🏻
Sam, another great video-especially your message. One thing that really stood out to me on this one-there is SO much valuable knowledge here for people new in the business, or just things we don’t even think about. At the quarry, the loader operator raising the boom after getting a full bucket to get the scale to register. You in the skidsteer moving dirt and stone-get a bucket and back away from the pile to where you’re dumping/placing…not only faster cycle times but not tearing up the ground resulting in more work to dress it up. So much knowledge and information here if people know what they’re looking at

Watched all those get built as well like you said several more that need your touch Sam, hope you get them. I actually mowed that place for hay while real estate was breaking it up! One of those sewer jetters on a big pressure washer would clean that out but would be about as much fun spreading out that fabric hahaha... Good message and video Sam!
Yup, all those driveways along that area are in bad shape for sure. I use to spread chicken litter on that farm years ago. It’s a nice place. I believe you are right about that sewer better being a whole lot of fun! 🤣😳 Thanks
I’m thinking a custom attachment is in order! Some sort of rod you could hook up to either machine to push thru the tile then maybe a t attaches then pull it back out. Something to create a path and let the water clean it out.
Sam, Looking good! I am also guilty of hearing but not listening…. Just ask my wife 😂 Doesn’t everyone carry a 30’ shovel to clean out culvert pipe or at least a long shovel extension?? Keep up the great work! Thanks for all you do!
In the county where I used to work as a stormwater engineer, we would clean out the culverts with a high-powered pipeline pigs which sprayed the water backwards through water ports to flush out the debris. Start at the pipe outfall, and it would pull itself up the pipe via water pressure to flush everything out.

I agree with you about digging around utilities, I've been doing this stuff since 1995, and I'm always nervous about it. The last 2 days, I've been digging across a golf course, burying new irrigation lines and repairing old ones. I use a 1" pvc pipe long enough to get thru the culvert then I tie on a 3/8 inch strand that i got from my local power company and I have a preform on the side I pull with my Kubota 040 and the other side is wrapped around a 15 inch smaller tire and attached back to itself. then I slowly pull the tire thru. sometimes it takes multiple pulls to clear the culvert completely but its a lot easier than digging it out of the culvert.

I cut that underlayment with a m18 grinder and a multi purpose diamond wheel. Just keep it tight with one leg on one side and pull the other and it will slice through like butter. Sometimes wraps the blade. No big deal.
I generally use the non woven fabric. That is really all I know of available around here. I get it at the County Soul Convention office or the Farmers COOP. I’m not sure what the weight is on the thickness. Thanks, Sam
I think the county comes out with an old fire truck or water tanker and blows out all the sediment with high pressure water. I'm not sure if they'd di it, might could enquire with Mckinney Excavating if they could clean it with their hydro excavator if the county cant.
Thanks Andrew! I thought that might be how they would do it. I checked with Brian on the hydro vac once before but it was pretty costly for that option. Sam
@tristardiggin I gotcha, I had the county come install a culvert pipe for me in meigs County. Ended up having to go in and redo everything they did, water had to build up about a ft before it ever would go through the pipe and it wasn't where the customer wanted it. Prime example of what you were talking about in your video about people not listening or clarifying what was to be accomplished.
LoL brother me and you both know the biggest fail in driveways is people just don't maintain them every once in a while ditches need to be cleaned and recut and shaped and I don't know what it is but fixing a driveway when it gets like that is harder to me than just building a new one LoL
When I ran my self loader log truck I often would be loading out by the state highway in a driving rainstorm. When I would head to sawmill other straight log truck drivers would often comment over CB radio..”I would never do that!”….Bingo! Never lacked for work,
Rant 100% right. People hear what they want to hear, and if they aren't sure they don't ask questions to clarify, and get on the same page. A lot of it has to do with incompetence. People get jobs, get appointed to positions that they are completely unqualified for, and that affects everything around them, and it's everywhere. It's the norm now.
Get a hold of your county council person for that area and tell him we’re trying to develop this area to bring more money to the county and we have a driveway tile that leads to the property and it would be nice if the county would maintain the right away to have the county road department send it’s flush truck out and clean this tile so the driveway doesn’t keep washing out so people will come and purchase this property to bring more money in for the county.
I worked in waste water for the City of Corpus Christi. Tx and the storm sewer people used to jet out the culverts with a vector truck and a jet nozzle that was at 18000 psi and pulled itself through the pipe. They also had a chain bucket unit that could clean out pipes! Here is a link to a jetting vid of cleaning out a sewer: ruclips.net/video/P6NIAwmD6rY/видео.html&ab_channel=DrainMachineoxfordshire
There is a better way to lay out that felt was it an option to order two 12 ft rolls for ever how long you need it start on the county road lay the start on the ground. Park a piece of equipment on it take your excavator with a pipe to put inside the roll and just walk it down as it unrolls. But if you can’t get in rolls forget what I just said. Lol
Hey Sam great video, what would a job like that cost? 2 machines, 2+ days, making 2 new ditch lines, lining with fabric. lining with 2 giant loads of rip rap. Im a small buisness just starting out

@@andrewcrosby8746 yup, exactly…
At some point as we age, (I'm 71), we need to hire some help...as needed 😂
Jim, I think that is great advice! 🤣🤣🤣
How you unblock those culvert pipes you use a high pressure water jetting flush it all out
Yeah, that seems to work pretty good from what I’ve seen…
Thanks
LoL brother me and you both know the biggest fail in driveways is people just don't maintain them every once in a while ditches need to be cleaned and recut and shaped and I don't know what it is but fixing a driveway when it gets like that is harder to me than just building a new one LoL
Hey Cliff that is right! Maintenance is the key to have a good road!
Thanks
Ive seen that some people clean culverts with an old tire being pulled through
Yeah, I’ve seen that! Seems to work pretty good…
Yup
You can call a dirt vac truck to clean that culvert
Thanks Michael. The owner might need to try that if the rain wash it back out…
Thats odd how that fabric came all waded up like that
That would be on me! We measured it out at the store and tried to fold it good and just turned into a big ole wad of fabric…🤪
@@tristardiggin ahh the store didnt know the size of it?
Howdy Sam
Howdy! 👋
Amen
Thanks Jason!
God Bless
Would the local fire department be willing to wash that tile out? High pressure water might clean a lot of it out.
It’s possible, maybe the property owner could check on that …
When I ran my self loader log truck I often would be loading out by the state highway in a driving rainstorm. When I would head to sawmill other straight log truck drivers would often comment over CB radio..”I would never do that!”….Bingo! Never lacked for work,
That’s right Dennis every one has an opinion of what we are doing! 😳
Thanks
Brandon"s my guy too...
Brandon does some great work for sure…👍
Call the volunteer fire department with a tanker truck to wash it out! A small donation to them is likely all it would cost!
Thanks Robert, that is a good idea and there is a volunteer station about 1 mile from that property…
Sam
Maybe you cold of put those dug out soils and put them along the private. road make a little shoulder and then reshape the ditch.
Thanks Gary, all the loose soil in sloped areas just creates erosion problems.
40ft drill bit will fix that right up 😂😂
Yup and I bet Harbor Freight might just have one in stock…🤣🤣🤣
@tristardiggin lol... we have bunnings here in aus
great job sam. you need a helper. i watch you do these jobs by yourself and wonder how you do it
Thanks Ray and sometimes I wonder how I get it done too! 🤪😳🤣
Jim it does seem to be the norm nowadays!
Thanks,
Sam
To clean out stopped up tile high pressure water let gravity do work for you
Gerald I think that would work great.
Thanks
What happened to your 308?
Hey Brad, I sold the 308 after I bought the 313.
Thanks
Good Job but, no Music Credits.
Thanks Mark, I appreciate it!
Pause video to say water is like electricity travels path to least resistance and powerful gotta have stuff to slow it down like ran away train
Gerald that is exactly right! Wow, it can make a mess…
If that’s a driveway tile that runs in the county ditch it is the county’s responsibility to get the flush truck out there and flush the tile out.
We were hoping they were going to clean it out but I guess not. Maybe the rain water will wash it out now that the ditches are cleaned out…
Thanks
Get a hold of your county council person for that area and tell him we’re trying to develop this area to bring more money to the county and we have a driveway tile that leads to the property and it would be nice if the county would maintain the right away to have the county road department send it’s flush truck out and clean this tile so the driveway doesn’t keep washing out so people will come and purchase this property to bring more money in for the county.
@Gooditalian Not a bad idea. Hopefully the next big rain storms will wash it out…
I worked in waste water for the City of Corpus Christi. Tx and the storm sewer people used to jet out the culverts with a vector truck and a jet nozzle that was at 18000 psi and pulled itself through the pipe. They also had a chain bucket unit that could clean out pipes! Here is a link to a jetting vid of cleaning out a sewer:
ruclips.net/video/P6NIAwmD6rY/видео.html&ab_channel=DrainMachineoxfordshire
Wow, I would say that would work pretty good. Thanks and I will check out that video…
“Listen with the intent to understand not to respond”
Right, well said!
Sam how much are your hats I need one?
$26 which also includes shipping
There is a better way to lay out that felt was it an option to order two 12 ft rolls for ever how long you need it start on the county road lay the start on the ground. Park a piece of equipment on it take your excavator with a pipe to put inside the roll and just walk it down as it unrolls. But if you can’t get in rolls forget what I just said. Lol
Gary I can get it in rolls but they are 300’ long. Occasionally I will buy a full roll but most of the time I just buy it by the foot.
Thanks,
Sam
Pulling the fabric is when you need a man behind the scenes
No doubt! 🤣🤣🤣
@tristardiggin If you were closer to Nashville I'd help may need to take a field trip east
Imprrecasive video!
Thanks Aaron! 👍😀
Hey Sam great video, what would a job like that cost? 2 machines, 2+ days, making 2 new ditch lines, lining with fabric. lining with 2 giant loads of rip rap. Im a small buisness just starting out
Depending on materials and hourly costs you could be between 5k to 7k…
@@tristardiggin awesome. thanks for the info
Nice job
Thanks Jimmy!
