Cleaning a Leg Bag Used for Urinary Incontinence

Cleaning a urinary leg bag can be a little challenging. Only for the reason that the connector that is attached at the top of the drainage bag is quite narrow. Trying to get water down into the collection bag to clean it out can be a little frustrating. One of the easiest ways we found was to use a funnel type of devise to get water into the tubing. And what better to use than the catheter that was used. Once the male external catheter has been removed from the body it cannot be used again anyway.
So the best thing to do is to reattach it to the connector and tubing and use the cone on the end of the catheter as a funnel. If the external catheter is to damaged you can cut the top off so that only a small portion of the cone it left. You only need to channel the water into the tubing anyway.
When cleaning the bag you want to use a mild soap and very little at that. If you use too much soap it can be difficult to get it completely rinsed out of the bag. If the leg bag is drying out and it still has residue of the soap in it, this can cause the inside of the bag to stick together. This can create a problem the next time it is used because the flow could become obstructed. So be sure to use a very little amount of soap when cleaning a urinary leg bag. Over a period of time some stains might also begin to develop inside the bag. In this case you can use a small amount of white vinegar diluted with water. Let it sit in there overnight and that will also take care of any odors that might begin to develop in it.
Urinary incontinence doesn’t have to be taboo subject. When the popper steps are taken to take care of the equipment that is used it can make all the difference in the world for those who suffer from it.
