Happy to be back for another year of "Read it or Unhaul it"!! What's your prediction? Will I do better? Find more favorites? Isn't that starting number... suspicious? LOL
You’ll end at 350! 100 read or unhauled, 50 new purchases. The number will be freaky again. I’m at 1187. Hoping to be under 1000 by the end of the year with the ultimate goal of being under 500. I still buy too many to be good at this challenge.
I have around 50 unread physical books and I am already in the unhaul path. I was happily buying less physical books in 2024 though, I bought only 3, and I pretend to continue that this year. Nowadays I preffer to buy audiobooks when I don't find a book in the Libby app, because they don't take space in my shelves.
I think no matter what happens this challenge is going well because you are reading books you own and either getting rid of them (YAY room for more books) or finding out that they are great and keeping them (YAY new favourites are going on your shelves).
I actually think this challenge is working really well! The goal is to find favorites or unhaul books that don’t fit your library. Well, I *think* if you add up the 4 and 5 stars and the ones you unhauled, that’s probably more than the mid books… even just the 5 stars with the unhauls is a decent chunk. I’m excited for this year!
Just here to say, after reflecting on my reading for 2024 (I read 47 books), I’ve fairly decided that my favorite book I read last year may have actually been, “I Who Have Never Known Men,” which I 1,000% read because of you. Mind blowing, life changing, earth shattering. I’ve been trying to get others to read it too. Thanks for all the book recs you give us!
I don't know how someone could think this challenge isnt going well. The whole point is to read the book and either like it and keep it, or dislike it and unhaul it. Thats the whole point of the series. Its even in the name of the challenge 😂 Looking forward to watching this series this year!
I don't think I've ever been this early. Thanks to your inspiration, I plan to start a "read it or unhaul it" for myself in an effort to catch up with my physical TBR.
I don’t know who’s saying that you haven’t been successful with this cos I feel like you have and it gives me motivation for my own books I own! I feel like regardless if it ends up being a favourite or an unhaul it’s still really great cos you’re getting through your owned stuff regardless?! I hope that makes sense I feel like I could have worded that better but I’m chronically ill so the brain fog is happening here also haha! Also love Clawdia in the background she’s like your very noisy shadow 😂
You're totally clear don't worry lol I also feel like it's a win-win regardless. Even if I hated most of the books I tried, at least I'd be decluttering (although I'd probably need a break lol). She has things to say for sure XD
Your challenge is called Read it or Unhaul it - that's exactly what you did which makes it an 100% success. Also, you're wearing my second favourite shirt (I have a top 3).
@BookswithEmilyFox Oh so number 3 is a shirt that only has one appearance on this channel (how dare you!) and it's the black shirt with one white sleeve. I love it! The one you're wearing now is number 2. Number 1 is my absolute favourite thing and I call it "Spring Emily" even though you also wear it in Summer aaaaaand it's the green dress (shirt?) with white dots. Not the paler green with smaller dots but the deep green with big dots :)) and it's not weird that I know your outfits (I hope). I went through a really bad phase where the only thing that eased my anxiety attacks was watching your videos on a loop :))
You'll be happy to hear I've definitely worn #3 before but it's more iconic now that it makes me match with Chip! And that green dress is definitely a favorite of mine too!! I'm sorry you had a rough time but I'm glad I was able to help a little. *hug*
SOOO HERE for the monthly Read It or Unhaul it 2025 edition !! 🎉 I really love this challenge because it gives me the impulse that a need to read my physical TBR 😃🩷 thank u Emily!!
I love this series! It's fun to watch but has also been helpful for me. I've been thinking of the phrase 'read or unhaul it' often now when looking at my shelves and it's helped me to stop avoiding certain books and either read them or get rid of them instead of them just sitting there forever, never read.
I’m just here to listen for Clawdia. 😂 Emily, you sound like me trying to count my books. The struggle is real!! By the way, I went out and bought a HUGE jar and I have my physical books all in there. It’s a great way to pick a book when you don’t know what to read.
You could get a tally counter, count ten books then push a button and it'll keep track of the button presses! I use them at work and it's faster and more accurate! A $5 one is super worth it.
Not the Clawdia making me think that my kitties are crying somewhere, again😆 I started dnf-ing books much more this year. I never EVER forced myself to finish the book and then liked it.
I absolutely adore this challenge and series, it finally inspired me to make my own TBR-Jar for 2025 and it sits around 250 books so far (there are probably more I forgot to add). First pick is already going great and I'm so excited to finally start some books I had for years but never really felt like getting to them. Hope your year is going to start out strong too 😊
I love this challenge so much and sassy clawdia makes me laugh so hard! My goal for myself is to read 10 physical books that I own since I have piles everywhere and the library pile is the one that gets touched the most!
This challenge has really helped me learn to put down books I’m not enjoying! I give myself until 20-30% into a book and if I’m not into it I put it down. I DNFd 7 books last year. Thank you for the inspiration! I had only one small reading slump last year bc of it ♥️
I love this video series! I hope the jar treats you well this year. As a side note, I always get excited when I see The Nix by Nathan Hill on the bookshelf behind you. The author was one of my instructors in undergrad and is just super nice.
I think you can do at least 40 books this year- but I love the juxtaposition of the giant jar and the counting, it made me laugh! I think one of my goals this year is to really try to finish series- I have so many on my TBR that I’ve partly started and I just need to finish them. Good luck!! 🎉
I think this will be a great reading year for you. I’m dying for you to get caught up on Stormlight archive but that might take another year because rhythm of war is looooooong too
Ha, i counted my physical tbr and the total is 458, so we are not far off. My goal this year is also to read it down as much as possible and end on less by the 31 december, so i will be going through it with you😊
I also prepared my jar but I'm so bad at it. I pick a book but all of the books in my jar are either in German and swedish (not my first language) or suuuuuper long classics. So I pick one, I read the title and then out it back in 😂😂 But this pushed me to remember that I have books that I know and don't need to buy new ones. So I'm choosing instead of letting fate decide!
I like this challenge. I got inspired and I'm choosing books from my GoodReads TBR, some are there for YEARS. Luckily don't have too big of a physical TBR :D I'm suprised about the cooments you mentioned - I never saw this as a way to find a new favourite. That's what the other vlogs are for :D
These are my favourite challenges: Read it or unhaul it AND keeping up with you when you add or substract books. 😆 Obviously, all even numbers are suspicious. Especially 450. 😄 Have fun! You'll do great I'm sure. ❤📚🐈⬛
Yay, I think 40 is a reachable goal for read it or unhaul it, you got this! It’s so good that you get new faves this way too. It’s entertaining when you dislike a book but it’s so rewarding when you enjoy one too. 🎉
In my opinion, the point of this series is to get your shelves representing you and what you love to read so technically it’s a win win situation! You find new favs, or get rid of books you didn’t care for that were taking up space!
I love your read it or unhaul it videos! And your big jar of papers! So much so that I decided to do my own! I hope that's alright-I did mention that I am modeling my challenge after yours. I just do 3 colors, but yay happy 2025 and happy reading hope you find a lot of new favorites!
Maybe making a spreadsheet of your unread books as well would help with keeping track of the numbers? I wonder if we'll ever get the jar down to like 100 books lol For sci-fi, I'd like to recommend Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill
I would but let's be honest... that's too much work lol Just writing them all down and having to count them once a year is enough 😂 I think I'd be a bit sad if I got it down low. I like having books to look forward to on my shelves!
I use a spreadsheet and Storygraph to keep track of my physical TBR. The spreadsheet helped me notice that I was collecting big sad books I never read. Now I'm less aspirational and more sensible. I pick up the ones I don't read at the library now. 😅
@@BookswithEmilyFox That makes sense lol. I decided to move all of my physical tbr books to one shelf this year and it's stressing me out being able to see them all staring at me 🤣 I've decided to give the read or unhaul challenge a shot this year :)
Really love this challenge and seeing the recap! Also for a sci fi rec ! I saw you have the spear cuts through water from Simon Jimenez for fantasy but I'd like to recommend The Vanished Birds for sci fi from the same author!! It reminded me of Becky Chambers in some aspects but bleaker and very human! I really really loved it!!

clawdia wants to be involved so bad haha. i think even if you don't find favorites you're succeeding if you read or dnf the books, new faves are just bonus
I'm a 43 year old nana with sleep deprivation and fibro among other memory health stuff. I totally relate to your brain fog lol. I also decided at 2am that I needed another huge unhaul lol. I do similar to your challenge but certain books were annoying me.
Hi Emily Happy new year 🎉. So i will recommend you empire of silence de Christopher Ruocchio in science fiction. I juste the first one and it was a great surprise
You mentioned adding book 3 of the City of Stairs Series, but did you also add in An Ember in the Ashes book 2? (Hope you didn't forget it, I checked and you own it.)
I really think you’ll like daughter of the moon goddess it’s considered an adult fantasy but some think it’s in between ya/adult. Either way It’s worth it 💕💕
Sci-fi recommendation: Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. If you enjoyed Kaiju Preservation Society you’ll enjoy his backlist books too. I think you’ll do great this year with the challenge. You’re doing great DNFing what you’re not enjoying too.
I'm going to do this too with my physical books. My physical tbr is so insanely long it will take me years, if not decades, to get through (I'm talking 800+ books lol), but you have inspired me. Also sidenote, I'm obsessed with how shiny your hair always is!
totally out of context but your hair looks SO beautiful and luscious! what products do you use? I have longggg hair too and I’m looking for a new routine!
The way I gasped at the 399 loool Do you use any apps/websites to track your library? I use a Google spreadsheet right and it is getting ridiculously long. I’m looking for something faster and easier to use.
OKay but why was it so validating to see you struggle with the numbers?? I have chronic illness and brain frog and i have this struggle all the time. Most recently I thought there were seven inches in a foot when there are 12!!
Maybe you could do it with a random number generator - so assign each shelf with a number and generate two random numbers and start counting. The process wouldn't be as exciting as picking a paper from a jar but still!
For science fiction recs: Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon Wulfsyarn by Phillip Mann Both out of print now, but available via ebook If you do as well in 2025 as in 2024, you'll come in under 400 books to start 2026
Hey Emily, you did start some new series this year.. did you add in the second book of the series, if you already own it and want to continue? This might also erase the suspicious number of 450🤣
Happy to be back for another year of "Read it or Unhaul it"!!
What's your prediction? Will I do better? Find more favorites? Isn't that starting number... suspicious? LOL
You’ll end at 350! 100 read or unhauled, 50 new purchases. The number will be freaky again.

I’m sorry but seeing you struggle with the counting was way too funny, made me spat out my tea a little 😂
If it's dark outside, my brain is off! Winter is rough 😂
I was laughing as well. I was just like at least you're trying to keep track 😅

I cackle every time you lift that jar. I swear one of the cats can fit in it. 😆
The size of the jar makes me laugh every time 😂😂
Right? I started with the little one and realized it was way too small so I got the biggest one I could find XD Hopefully it will be enough forever!!
Just here to say, after reflecting on my reading for 2024 (I read 47 books), I’ve fairly decided that my favorite book I read last year may have actually been, “I Who Have Never Known Men,” which I 1,000% read because of you. 40 books sounds like a realistic number to reach, crossing my fingers for you 🤞
Team Clawdia Should Be Allowed In The Room ✊
She attacks the papers... counting would have been even harder lol
@BookswithEmilyFox That sounds very entertaining for us and for Clawdia to be fair
I was already struggling enough 😅
I think she ran off with the 2 missing books as it is 😂❤

The mathematical struggle is real girl 🤣🤣 don't worry got your back ❤
For classic science fiction, I recommended The Clockwork Man by E. V. Odel.
I can recommend War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells for a sci fi. Its also a classic. So good
You mentioned adding book 3 of the City of Stairs Series, but did you also add in An Ember in the Ashes book 2? (Hope you didn't forget it, I checked and you own it.)

I think you'll knock it out of the park and do 45! (Because it sounds cool to do 10% of the jar)

Flour? Sugar? I’m not sure but from this brand it’s my best guess

This challenge is always so fun and I wish I would do it too, but the hassle to write down 600 books? I don't know lmao... I am so lazy
LOL right? It was a lot... that's also why there's only so many times I'll recount! Close enough XD
Maybe you could do it with a random number generator - so assign each shelf with a number and generate two random numbers and start counting. The process wouldn't be as exciting as picking a paper from a jar but still!
I'm in accounting and I still can't count 😂😂
Ι love your lip compo, what are you wearing?
Book calculus is tough to do😅
I only have 16 unread books on my shelf so my jar is just a jam jar lol
For science fiction recs:
Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon
Wulfsyarn by Phillip Mann
Both out of print now, but available via ebook
If you do as well in 2025 as in 2024, you'll come in under 400 books to start 2026
I’ve read the first one (did not know it was out of print!) so I’ll check out the other one
Why is your cat meowing!? 🐈
She doesn’t like when I am behind a closed door
Hey Emily, you did start some new series this year.. did you add in the second book of the series, if you already own it and want to continue? This might also erase the suspicious number of 450🤣
THANK YOU! There are 2 I think
-A Torch Against the Night
-Old Man's War 3
The starting number is now 452!
