  • It would seem I've picked up the GEC bug! This is my third Great Eastern Knife; a Tidioute # 97 Allegheny or "Coke Bottle." Yes, I'm pretty excited about this one on many levels!

    Yes, I’m aware I misspoke about how long ago GEC has been using the Beavertail shield. GEC. Has only been around 13 years so they couldn’t have been using the shield for 20 years!

      Thanks. They aren’t for everyone, I get that but they are worth what you pay. This one has convinced me that I need to slow down on lower cost knives and save my pennies for more GECs. The wait will be worth it.

    The 97 is A favorite of mine, however the overly light spring is a large negative. I’m wondering if it’s possible to convert it to a lockback, or change the spring.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  Год назад

      I'm okay with the light spring. I see how some could have issues with it but when used properly I feel safe using it. But I can see why many would want something heavier.

    Congrats on another GEC! Excellent choice- that is a beautiful knife! I think the jigged cherry is gorgeous and the blade is great. I had a chance to handle a GEC Allegheny in ebony at the Blade Show last summer. They are impeccable knives. Heirloom quality!

    My first purchased GEC is the #971119 Tidioute Allegheny Autumn bone jigged PPP, but it didn't have the great bevertail shield. Yes, I'm hooked on GEC's already. I was doing a bn pretty good job resisting buying them, and then a friend gave me a #715118 Bullnose. I Have another GEC incoming next week if the post office gets it's 💩 together. Tubes are cool. Even the button & wax paper is part of the experience for me.

      I am at the point you were 7 months ago. They are at the upper limit of my knife purchase ability. I say I won't get crazy with them, and then find a few available. By the time you decide to purchase it, it's gone. Then you see them on the secondary market at a highly inflated price. By once, cry once. They are like a drug, and the equivalent would be a hard drug. You think you can resist, but resistance is futile. 😂

      You got that right! And until I bought one I really thought they were over-priced for what you get. It is quality and it is hand made. There is quite a bit of attention to detail. You are paying for the craftsmanship and quality control.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 года назад +1

      Very True. What I found interesting is that the folks at GEC actually bought tooling from numerous defunct American knife companies. and repaired and retooled them to bring back several classic patterns. For such a young company they definitely have a long rich history.

    Real nice. You just woke me up to something. It's called the snooze you lose phenomena. Up here in Canada I had ordered a few Rough Rider knives and there were two more I really wanted to get but I was going to put it off. I sent an email thanking the seller but an automatic response came back that their partner was having problems medically and I think it may have to do with the Coronavirus. So I place my order right away before this world goes crazy. These knife videos relaxing compared to the press secretary

      Freddy Lamberti, glad it was still available. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy this one. They have a beaver tail trapper coming out in 2020. Looks nothing like a Case Trapper. I’ve already set money aside for it. So much for “anything but a Trapper!”

    Great looking knife. I'm in the Rough Ryder range of traditionals, however GEC is where I would go for a more expensive traditional. I would hate to spend 60 bucks on a Case, and get fit & finish less than a Rough Ryder. I'd rather spend a little more with a GEC & not have to worry about fit & finish for the most part.

    Every day a schoolday! I never knew that it was only the Tidioutes which get the PPP. That explains why my Northfield version of this knife (got it last week - Sambar Stag, a real beauty) hasn't got it while your Beaver Tail has. Another difference between our versions is that mine gets the number 976119, because the clip blade has a sabre grind in the Northfield versions of this knife - now there's an interesting little factoid for you!

    A lotta folks don't like the soft pull on the 97. Why you think that is, because I love it? It's hands down my favorite GEC. I own 3.
    Do you think people mistake it as a lesser quality? Are they afraid of it?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 года назад

      I think the pull is just about perfect. I think the reason it is easier is simple mechanics. The blade is longer so you have more leverage! Blade lock is nice and tight!

      It's a very common compliant with that model. It's why 3 of the 5 original versions are still available, but I'm with you. I think it's perfect.

    i just can't bring myself to get a GEC or even Case, when I start to calculate how many patterns i could get in Rough Ryder. like literally buy half a dozen rough ryders for the price of just one GEC lol

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 года назад +1

      Charles Cha, I know exactly where you are coming from. I have over 100 Rough Ryders and I have often commented on just how good they are for the price you pay. I even mention in this video that I know that GEC is not going to be for everybody! A Rough Ryder Coke Bottle is going to cost $13 at SMKW. The pattern is a different style than GEC but you’re talking a difference in price of about 9 to one.
      A case coke bottle is a different story. They are not currently in production and often go for over a $100. (The Rough Ryder copies the most common Case Coke Bottle.)
      But I know exactly where you’re coming from. I even talk about it at the end of the video.
