As a former Disney Cast Member that was sent home due to the Pandemic hearing and seeing how "Certain Disney Executives" is changing everything is really disappointing and disrespectful to Walt Disney's Legacy. I don't understand how they can turn on the very guests, audience, and families that always supported them. If they don't stop and try to reverse this path, the Magic of Disney will disappear forever and they will become the next Astro World.

We went to Disney World in November last year and I actually filed a complaint about how rude cast members were. And to be clear, I NEVER FILE COMPLAINTS. It’s just not something I ever do. But we had a number of bad experiences. We even got yelled at by a cast member while standing in the line right before going into the indoor part of Space Mountain. There were two cast members, one told us to go, and the other yelled at my son for going. It was so bad. Disney really should get it together. I know the parks are super crowded right now, but a lot of people are having bad experiences. That word is getting out fast.

Did you actually complain to anyone? If you skipped multiple meals because you didn't like how you were treated, that's on you. 20 cruises here, and any that were less than perfect, talking to someone made it much better every time. I'm an uppity traveler, and I don't roll with substandard service. They'll fix it, but they're not going to read your mind or wait for you to complain to the Internets.

You're absolutely right, it is the management. The whole "strive for 5" is toxic. It is based on the idea that anything other than a 5 is a failing score. Some people don't give 5s unless you go above and beyond, and thus servers have to beg and plead because they can lose their job if they get too many 4s. This happens a lot with Uber/Lyft/Instacart. Too many 4s and you're fired.

I disagree... My first job had a very harsh and demanding, but very fair boss. He taught me that mistakes were good and encouraged research and creativity. BUT mistakes better not make their way into the final product. We spent many hours of failure analysis when that did happen and do everything possible to make sure it never happened again.

@@grayrabbit2211 I don’t think you understand what the OP is saying. Setting high standards and expectations are fine but when you pressure your staff to where their reviews had better be no less than perfect then it creates undue stress on the worker and that stress is then passed onto the customer and ultimately the final product loses it’s quality and your customer’s won’t want to return and purchase your product again. Everyone loses

    • @katymvt
      @katymvt 2 года назад +3

@@mattkennedy6115 It's also not fair, because customers are not always objective. Or just refuse to give a perfect score because nobody is perfect (which to be fair is true). Or, you could have the situation where a waitperson has 2 families. One is screaming a ton of stuff at him just because they are miserable in general. He does his best to accomodate them, but of course people like that aren't going to give a 5. And the other family gets annoyed by all the yelling and thinks the waiter is giving the other family better service (which he may be, squeaky wheel gets the grease) and also don't give him a 5, due to no fault of his.

As a Disney Cast Member myself, I can say that it’s actually very easy to give 5 star service. You have to make the role your own. That being said, I have had management at times tell me I needed to take it down a few notches because too many people were requesting me and other people were asking why they couldn’t have a CM like me assigned to them. I would take the most mundane tasks and make it as fun as possible just to get through it. I’ve also never been on a Disney Cruise before.

I’m glad you’re pointing the finger at management instead of at the cast members, because that’s where it belongs. I understand the need to maintain standards and profitability, and what not, but if you create an environment where a worker has to have the patience of Job just to get through one day, well, that’s going to bleed out onto the guests eventually. That’s clearly what happened in your case. This poor fellow probably has to deal with all sorts of unfair rubbish from his managers constantly.

I appreciated seeing your review. I recently got back from my first ever Disney cruise - we sailed Jan 3 - and did not have the same kind of experience but I have been to Disney enough times recently to see that there is a change in staff attitude since the pandemic and that can put a slight damper on your overall experience. Our cruise wasn't perfect either... I too thought the main dining food could have been better based on what I've heard before but I had the luxury of opting into Palo and that was such a great experience. I'm sorry to see there isn't a similar option for teen foodies as you stated. We also had a bad experience with cast members on board that was disappointing but because of how much we paid, we tried to not let it ruin the whole experience. It definitely stinks for you and your family if the entire time you felt uncomfortable though so I hope you bounce back and are able to have a more enjoyable vacation soon. My kids also loved Oceaneer Club but I did not personally have interaction with the teen clubs; I did see many teens hanging out together who met on the ship though and they seemed to be having a blast. Such a toss up on experiences but really hoping you are able to go on another cruise or trip in the near future that makes up for this! If I were you I'd consider writing directly to Disney too and share about your experience.

I went on my first Disney cruise when I was 13. I was MISERABLE. I wasn’t one to easily make friends and the Magic at the time didn’t have a very big teen area, or activities I was interested in, but I was good spending time wandering the ship, reading up on deck or sitting in the tea/coffee bar and drawing. The food outside the 3 dining rooms were fine for everyday food, and I was ok with ordering whatever I wanted from the main dining menus…. I sadly don’t remember our servers from that cruise. My parents were so mad that I didn’t have fun, and I didn’t think I would want to do this again…. That said I’m 38 now and just came off my 5th 4 night Disney cruise on the Dream in January. Don’t let one bad experience in your youth deter you from trying again. As for the staff you can ALWAYS speak up, right away, especially if you get pushy servers, if your cruise was as empty as ours was they would have accommodated you elsewhere. We did that on a previous cruise due to events overlapping and they put us in another seating for a day. The crew is there for your vacation and enjoyment not theirs, they want you to have the best experience so always go up to either the host at the front or the reception in the atrium and tell them. Trust me they have heard so much worse.
I’m so sorry this was one was a bad trip, I do hope you go on many more no matter what cruise line.

I learned that during the pandemic a lot of the workers did not pursue their contracts (US & other countries also had limitations to coming into country & people got out of industry. So when you went on your cruise it was new workers that had to be trained. Not veterans. As was the situation with other cruise lines during the time you went. I’ve been on multiple Disney cruises including after the pandemic and I have to tell you that your experience is a sad one but it is not the norm. My daughter hung out in the vibe and loved it! My father was very ill back home and we got some bad news about him on our cruise and they put together a gift basket and delivered it to her room with signatures from other kids in the Vibe. My food was pretty stellar! The things that I didn’t like we’re foods that I don’t normally like! I tried some things hoping that I might like them this time and I didn’t. But they brought me something else and it was delicious. I’ve only once had a fairly inhospitable server at dinner and we talked to the head server and told them and the attitude completely changed immediately. The survey that you get that asks if you’ve been pressured to give a five star review is a survey that has been around since the cruise line started. I took a cruise from my honeymoon over 20 years ago and that question was on there. So it’s not like this is something new. I’m sorry that you had a terrible experience, but I’d hate for you to write off Disney Cruise is completely because I’ve been on multiple ones and they have all been wonderful. I am not a Disney employee nor am I compensated or funded in anyway by Disney.

My family just started cruising last year & we are hooked. We keep hearing some Guests complain about not being able to serve themselves at Cabanas or the ice cream dispensaries, but I can’t say I see any problem with Cast Members handling food distribution. You can still ask for as much as you want, but there are fewer hands on the food you select & having to sit down and eat instead of taking 50 servings of fries at once can prevent tons of food waste & overeating.

I have been on many Disney Cruises. Every one of them have been spectacular! Until this last one March 22. So many changes! I absolutely agreed with the food changes. Cabanas was so much cleaner and moved much more efficiently than when we just served ourselves. The portions given are actually regular sized portions , but everyone who cruises is use to pigging out 24/7! The ice cream station was so clean I even went back for more! Now here is what I did not like! ! The pools had guidelines that just were silly. You stood in line to get in the pool. Then they allowed something like 15 people in the pool for 15-20 minutes, then you get out of the pool and get back in line! That was on the kids side. Over on the adult side, nobody was really in the pool at all!!! Maybe 5-10 people . Total pool bummer. The dinner seating was horrible! Past cruises we have always had 2-4 other people at our table. Great friendships have been created over those dinners! This last cruise we had our own table. The friendship aspect had been taken away at both major junctions of the cruise. The final disappointment was the character meetings….I pretty much have pic of me and every character from at least the 8 cruises where we are hugging or giving a high 5! This cruise people were instructed to stand maybe w-5 feet IN FRONT OF THE CHARACTER!!!! No interaction at all…ever! This was so sad to see those sweet little kids wanting to hug on their favorite character or princess and could not. I know the pandemic changed things, but maybe the changes are a bit to much. I had a horrible time, made no new friends, I pretty much just stayed to myself….it will be a long time before I hit another Disney cruise.

Our family on the Dream in May of this year and it was incredible. (It looks like you went on the Dream as well) Food was great, cast members were all friendly, and the musicals were awesome. There was one appetizer I personally disliked, and our server noticed it immediately and offered to bring other options. Our server mentioned reviews on the last dinner but it was brief and not really pushy. I can't speak for the teen club since our kids are younger. Their jedi training camp was suspended but when guest services saw that my 8 year old was disappointed, they left both of our kids toys (star wars and frozen toy sets) in our room while we were at dinner. I guess everyone's experience varies.

I just got off the Disney Magic 2 days ago, and as a Golden Castaway Club Member (7 Disney Cruises), I can say that the service was good as ever and a lot of this is just wrong.
#1: Since December 2021 when I did a Very Merry Time Cruise on the Disney Wonder, they’ve loosened their COVID policies a lot.
#2: The Muster Drill is a huge improvement. I remember when they took an hour of everyone’s time to do the drill with everyone. WHAT A PAIN! Sometimes the app won’t show the drill but I found the number one reason why that happened is because a minor was trying to do it. The adult of the cabin should see it if they linked their stateroom correctly. However, a lot of times the kids, like myself, are more technically advanced than my parents so they just told me to do it. Then I realized I could only do it from their phones.
#3: Disney does have the best service in the business. My hands are rated E for EVERYBODY so don’t fight me on that statement. From the past 2 cruises, I still remember the Councilors and Crew Members who made my cruise experience so special. That being said, every once in awhile you get assigned someone who isn’t great, but those people normally get identified and won’t return for another contract. Out of the 7 cruises I’ve been on with Disney, only 1 had a bad service team.
#4: Cast Members were always happy to talk to me and answer questions, and I’m not a big content creator or anything. They are happy to be back at work and are doing their best.
#5: Vibe. As a teen at Vibe, I can say it is always a fun time. The Counselors aren’t there to coddle you, unlike the Oceaneer Club & Lab. It is mainly a hang out spot and the counselors aren’t solely responsible for trying to get you to interact with each other.
#6: The food. I’ve heard it really depends which ship you are on and who the cooks are. On my last one is good but not great. Also don’t be hating on Pinocchio’s Pizzeria. You can always ask them to make a new one hot AND ITS INCLUDED.
#7: Sounds like a bad server. They should only, kindly, ask you once. You can also ask the Mater D for a new server.
#8: the only did 1 show because u were on a 3 night cruise. The longer the more there are
I’m sorry you had a bad experience but I just don’t think most of the issues you had would be consistent if you did it again. Disney Cruise Line is my favorite vacation type.

We recently did a Hilton Grand Vacations stay in Orlando and spent a few days at the parks. Both my daughter and I are former cast members. We could not believe how the cast members interacted (or really didn't interact) with us. At one point my husband walked up to a full service restaurant and went to ask a question, he barely got two words out and the cast member didn't even look up at us and said you have to check the app. The cast member had no clue what the question was and when my husband went to start the question again she finally looked up, didn't let him finish the question, and proceeded to say, what part of check the app do you not understand. My daughter and I looked at each other with the same look and knew if we EVER had said something this to a guest when we worked at Disney we would have been fired right in front of the guest. Scenarios like this continued so much during our holiday that at the end of our stay my husband told us he hoped we enjoyed our visit because we were to never spend another dime at Disney. Our daughter and nephew also didn't enjoy the teen area. They were hoping for some fun experiences but the cast members didn't seem like they cared that much. We were supposed to go in November for our 7th, but decided it was best to wait. We would be quite disappointed not to see three shows. We've also had a couple pushy cast members taking about the 5 star reviews. We told them not to worry, we always give good reviews for good service and if we didn't hear about it again, jokingly. 😉 I'm hoping they will get back to the way they were, but they lost a bunch of money during the pandemic when they couldn't sail, so it may be a while. Cruising in general has been on a constant downgrade for the last 20 years. The food, even on the cheap cruises in the general dining room, use to include lobster and high quality steak and other dishes at every meal. We went on a Disney Cruise about 15 years ago, and I can say that comparing it to other cruise lines from 20 years ago had noticeable difference. With the pandemic this has accelerated unfortunately. That’s why we have stopped cruising for now and will do land vacations for a while.

One thing that people who have never worked in the service industry should know is that this survey thing is not just Disney. Essentially, at a lot of these businesses, employees/cast members are told flat out "any survey response that isn't a 5 is a 1." Not only is this deeply problematic because of the stress it causes the worker, it means that you never give employees a chance to learn and grow. Returning honest surveys to c/m's would be a million times better for improving the work force than simply forcing them to beg/bully/plead for 5's.

  • @maxinezook3835

It's weird about the 5 star rating begging from a waiter who sounds like he was barely worth 1 star but it's a very common practice in various service industries, some will ask for 5 star ratings &/or really great tips outright, others will have signs with those requests, tip jars on the counter etc. but somewhere along the way the service industry forgot that it's much more important that they earn the high star ratings/great tips first then you can give them what you want based on how you feel about their service not the other way around!
I'd say about 50% of the time the service people are worthy of the high ratings &/or great tips they ask for in advance but it's very important to judge each situation based on it's own merits or demerits.

I was on the first cruise out for Fanasty in September right after they started back cruising. Yes, things were really different but the cast members I encountered were friendly, helpful, and genuinely nice. I definitely felt a different vibe but overall did not encounter any cast member who was rude or not willing to help. I do think some of the issues are due to pandemic. As for the parks, I did feel the last time I was there a few cast members were not as friendly and or knowledgable but overall not horrible. I would definitely give them a second try, especially with the new ship. It just may have been one of those off moments so definitely try again. I mean if you think about it we keep returning to fast food restaurants that give bad service so why not give Disney a chance to do better. Also if you tell your story to customer service at Disney they may even help you make your next one better or at least give you a discount to try again.

I ❤️ Disney but unfortunately, I feel they are doing now equal or more money than before pandemic started. For this reason, I don't understand why everything is more pricey than ever. I hope they improve prices, improve employees salaries, and be able to reward them more so they feel empowered, motivated, and happy while they are performing their job. They work very hard and Disney is making so much.... money. We are in a moment where shareholders needs to learn to share with the employees their money and don't sacrifice their salaries, treatment, park service, and amenities.

as someone who has grown up on disney cruises and has done 26 in the past, i have a lot to say on this! I’m not trying to be rude at all, just informing you as to why some things may have happened. I am not affiliated with disney at all so this is all my personal opinion. Firstly, there was only one broadway show for many reasons. The cruise would show a single show on multiple days to reduce crowding. Also, many mainstage cast would frequently be out for covid, making it nearly impossible to get many shows done. Those broadway style shows are highly respected and will not be put on stage unless the cast feel as though they are capable of doing their best. Moving forward. When it comes to the food, it may have just been a bad batch, but if you don’t like something you should tell someone that so you can get a new meal. They didn’t cook it so it is no offense to them. As for your wait staff, when you say you have a bad dining experience, every single person that took care of you(server, waiter, cooks, etc) all get “dinged” which basically means they get a talking to. It is very vital for wait staff to get s five star in order to keep their job, a certain amount of dings will get them removed from the ship. Usually staff is not like this, so what i’m assuming is that he recently got dinged and was probably paranoid about getting another one. You never know. Finally, vibe. I go to vibe very frequently. Although, you compare vibe to the kids club, but you had only ever been in the kids club before covid. The kids club has less activities and way less interactive things going on since the pandemic. Vibe was the exact same as the kids club except for older kids, before covid. They had to reduce activities to remain social distancing, which also explains why they didn’t push for many people to make tons of friends. Plus there is a substantial decrease in guests allowed on board, making spaces look much more empty. As for the pool, that could be a variety of things. Understaffing, weather, timing, it really depends. in the clip you showed, the weather didn’t look the best so in this case that’s what i’m assuming it was. I hope this helped to clear some things. I just came back from a cruise today and many restrictions have been removed, allowing more interactions, more shows, and just more in general. Id give it a second chance if i were you, it’s honestly an amazing place.

I'm afraid a lot of businesses have a handy excuse in the so-called "pandemic", and I believe the Disney company like others is milking this excuse for all it can get away with to cut costs and increase the bottom line. Many Disney guests are alleging the current CEO is putting the priority on profits over guests, and the ends justifies the means. I got sick of the pandemic excuse after only 6 months.

Gotta say, I'm not incredibly surprised. I have had a few bad experiences in the parks with cast members not being polite. I'm disabled and they tend to act like that's a burden to them. I've even been told that they "don't cater to wheelchairs" (exact quote) before when all I asked is if there was a spot for people like me to go to so we could see the parade. Because, of course, people stand in front of us every time and block our views. I've never been too impressed with the people there.

  • @burningisis

That is so unfortunate that you experienced this. Some families save for years to be able to afford a Disney cruise, and there are expectations that come with the Disney brand. And empty teen centers, mystery green sauce on food, and pushy waiters just arent what people expect from Disney. I agree that its likely management causing this staff member to practically demand 5 star ratings. However, its likely NOT upper management doing this. Its likely a new lower manager causing this. What happens normally within management is upper management goes "wow, I'm seeing a lot of 3-4 star ratings for your staff, would you care to explain this lower manager?" And in a panic, because the lower manager doesnt know how to manage people and is likely a staff member who thought being the "boss" is the best thing ever, they took their staff into subsequent meetings and berated them. Telling them they HAD to ask for 5 star reviews at every meal or they'd be fired. This kind of browbeating from lower level management really sucks for staff and can cause erratic behaviour until which time that manager is removed. Because their tactics WILL deliver results. However they deliver those results at the cost of the entire customer experience.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Because Disney does have a brand to uphold, and that brand above all else is service.

Fellow 15 year old here, just got off the Disney Fantasy today (7 day cruise). I personally think it was great but my family and I will probably be running back to Holland America Line haha. My family has cruised for ages, I was on a cruise when I was 1 for crying out loud.
For what you pay for, I barely felt like I got my moneys worth, and I didn't even pay for the cruise, *and* it was discounted. Least important is the internet and it's shameful that it costs $90 for 1GB of data, but hey its a cruise I shouldn't be staring at my phone. My family has gotten lied to by cast members a few times ("free refills" for Castaway Key drinks, for example) but the service was good overall. Food was great, usually, but the buffet was honestly bad, and room service was usually cold.
I honestly can't complain much more, as it was my first cruise since February 2020 and it seems like the mask mandate is being relaxed (and will be gone in a few weeks), as well as Star Wars Day at Sea being a good bonus, but DCL isn't my kind of cruise. Holland America Line is much more relaxed and formal, less kiddos running around, and better food. Not to mention cheaper fares. My family already has a HAL trip booked for May and my first Princess Cruise to Hawaii in October, and I'm more excited for both than I was enthusiastic on the Disney Fantasy.

Also some guests expect more than other guests and I’ll tell you some cannot be happy no matter what you do for them. My kids did vibe and it wasn’t event driven. It was more geared towards leadership exercises so it feeds kids who are very social. If you’re not you prob will recluse. But you don’t have to stay in vibe. Nps metrics are down all across the board with all companies due to restrictions from the pandemic and those restrictions require employees to be more authoritative and also in some cases require guests to not overindulge so much in food bc remember we’re also short in the kitchen. Disney cut out any foods off menus that require cast to cross paths in the kitchen. This won’t last. It’s a temporary upset in the industry.

If they aren’t doing anything to achieve five stars, please tell them so they can earn those five stars. I agree management is putting a lot of pressure on these servers to get five stars. We stay at Portofino Bay, it is a beautiful great resort. It includes express pass, water taxi, early entry and a wonderful resort, once again you feel wanted.

Thank u for telling the TRUTH, there is just one side of cruising with restrictions right now on RUclips. We can’t even cruise because of the restrictions! Hopefully soon all the restrictions are gone so we can cruise, miss it so much!

@@NixTheNorm Many Celebrations coming soon! Trust me customer service will have no choice but to switch back to being friendly and answering questions like before! They have no choice, cruise ships will go bankrupt without us.

As a veteran of 30 DCL cruises, we've seen the cycles--food and service gets better and then deteriorates. We used to have a favorite server that we requested on each cruise--he was always great and never pressured us. The problem is that the situation is not uniform across the line, and the costs are WAY too high, even when compared to other top notch lines. We started "trying out" other lines several years ago. While there are things that DCL does best, we've also found a lot of good elsewhere and always at a better price than DCL. As 2 adults, we've always felt that the high fares for the first 2 people were underwriting the cost of the kid programming.
Will be interesting; our next cruise is an adult only line.

I am set to take a Disney cruise next spring. I feel it’s important to hear this review. I thought you reported on why happened to your family in a very classy and responsible way. To hear a review like this is very upsetting.

Aw, thank you so much for saying that! I really hope you have an amazing time. Since there are still a couple months more till spring, I think they might work out all their new issues and get training back up to normal. So I hope you have a great cruise! Let me know how it goes. :) Thanks for watching, and I hope you'll consider subscribing!

The 5 star review request is endemic among all industries. It does nothing for customer service. I will tell you that my kids, pre-pandemic enjoyed immensely the older kids clubs of Edge and Vibe. It is the 18-20 folks that kind of fall through the cracks. I know you said it, but having cruised with Disney for over 16 years and also doing a pandemic one in September, I found that Disney is doing the best they can under circumstances. When you realize we live in a world where a woman can sue McDonald's for coffee being too hot, you realize that it is not our health that Disney is concerned about. Waivers and disclaimers should have been enough to handle that. The real problem is the fear generated by the pandemic in general. When we reduce our fellow man to nothing more than petridishes with legs in our collective minds, we take away their humanity. Lockdowns left people to use social media as their only window to the world. Social media and lack of physical contact is the real disease here. It is why there are less cast members, it is why people are not so warm and inviting. Like I tell my children, give it a few years, Sweetheart. People have to relearn how to treat each other in person. The reason Disney hurts our feelings so much is because they set the bar so high. Does Disney as a whole need a course correction? Absolutely. They need to stay out of politics and our kids schools, and just do what they have always done best, create experiences and tell stories to entertain us.
