Most chanters I see are men, if it’s not the choir. (Especially since Covid.) Is there an official rule against female chanters or is that just chance?

Thats a tricky question..... There are many female chantors many who are world-class however on if women are allowed at the analoghion almost everywhere they allow it but theres much controversy about it some say its not traditional others say its fine.

Check the services streamed at @HolyTrinityGOCPDX. Photini Downie Robinson is one of their cantors and she’s wonderful. Also Kseni Makrigianni, Amy Hogg, Jessica Suchy-Pilalis - there are some really wonderful women who are active in the Byzantine chant world.

I can answer that for the Antiochian Church. We have many female chanters. However mixing male and female chanters in Greek Byzantine music doesn't quite work especially because of the different voice capacities (generally men can reach higher notes). From a personal point of view, and I know that many share my point of view, I prefer male choirs in Byzantine music. That's just my taste not a rule! God bless.
