A rabbit scream is actually a natural defense mechanism. It's a last resort move to startle or make it's captor uncomfortable enough to release the rabbit. It doesn't always work on wolves or cats, but it's pretty effective on humans who respond uniquely to vocalization, even by other creatures.

@x xx this is true. Rabbits are prey animals they get very terrified when someone catches them and holds them like that. Never capture a baby bunny. That bunny is probably dead now from fear

I didn't even know they sounded like this. As a kid I moved many baby bunnies so they'd be okay and they never made that sound. Sounds absolutely terrified.
TheFlox1122 Just like we don't make noises outside of a very heavy breath when sucker-punched in the solar plexus. Also, if you squeeze a bunny, you're _extremely_ likely to crush its bones. So NEVER do that.

I saved one of these babies from my outside cat and oh BOY it was weird... he was so tiny. But so very strong. He made the little noises for a bit but once we started walking him a few blocks away he stopped. The thing that stuck with me the most was feeling his little heart going like a motor in my fingers... I think he was just happy to be alive at that point.
***** I agree; it's much better to leave it alone so it can run into the street and become roadkill. I raised rabbits too; if you're gonna handle a rabbit, this is a valid way to do it. They usually tell you not to pick up a stressed rabbit because they'll bite you or start losing their fur. The former isn't relevant to the rabbit's health, but the latter is only true if it's under extreme duress (like if it's being hunted, or under that kind of pressure). You could see at the end that the bunny wasn't hyperventilating, it didn't keel over, it didn't shoot away to find a safe haven. It hopped into a bush; it was fine. You self-righteous animal activists need to calm the hell down. This guy did nothing wrong.
Ray Lee Think of it though, picking up a random baby that's not even yours. And how she was being self-righteous? She was basically warning people off.
Yes. That's what I thought at first, the rabbit should've been release. Before rabbits die, they scream like that. Had the dude hold him longer, the rabbit would pass out from stress if I'm not mistaken.

I dont care if you think you're the biggest fucking animal advocate for not eating meat (in reality generations of domestication could not be undone in most species leading to extinction if we were to just stop) it's not an exaggeration to say that rabbit is being pointlessly harmed and that this is terrible mistreatment of the animal, it is an exaggeration to say cows are harmed when they are milked. Random_YT - Games, rabbit videos and More! That’s specifically YOUR bunny so that would mean that the bunny is comfortable around you. Unlike in the video the bunny was clearly trying to escape the people and was distressed when someone picked them up because they thought they were going to die. They are prey animals, anything trying to grab at the bunny is going to make them scared for their life.
May be cute, but that level of stress is extremely unhealthy for them, in some cases deadly, so if a bunny starts squeaking when grabbed, release it IMMEDIATELY!!!
I work at a rabbit shelter and have owned rabbits my entire life, many that have been abuse so i think i can put a bit of perspective into this. When a rabbit is screaming like that it isn't just "frightened" or "startled" it is in pain, to make that noise a rabbit has to be put through severe mental and physical trauma but to make the noise itself is also devastatingly painful it's the same pain you would feel if you were being choked because the adrenaline makes their heart beat so fast its like they aren't' even breathing it's a defense mechanism and can and will kill them not a noise your cat makes when you pick her up and she doesn't expect it. You should not bother wild animals no matter how much your kid thinks it's cute and wants to touch it, this is not the abuse you maybe use to but it is still abuse. he is putting the rabbit though trauma when instead he could have allowed his children to observe the rabbit from a far and teach them to respect and admire the animal. If they wanted to touch a bunny there are thousands in shelters and you can go there and touch them for free.
Good job! I have caught one and while looking on how to take care of it I found this same answer, but when I found it it was on my neighbors porch screaming because it got hurt by a lawn mower, it's lip/gum was partially missing. We took it to a local shelter and they kept it, a week later we went back and they said they released it. I was so happy it was ok.
this little guy wasn't a pet, though. a rabbit can also scream like this if they're being carried off by a predator... or if they think they're being carried off by a predator.
Actually no! The nature of a rabbit's scream is not actually a cry for help, as other rabbits will ignore it! What it actually is, is a last ditch effort to escape. By making a shill cry, the rabbit hopes to startle or make it's predator uncomfortable enough to drop it. It's not very effective on hardened predators like wolves, but very effective on humans, who often respond with sympathy to these kinds of vocalizations!
Ethan Davies true but good luck convincing some of these fools. I know for damn sure that once anything squeaks, my dog who may have had zero interest before will not stop until he disembowels it
This video nearly made me cry, the poor little thing looks so vulnerable and lost. When it made those noises I could tell it was so terrified and prayed it wouldn't go into a state of shock.
you can differ all you want, but it's the truth. though it's more "thinks" it's about to die. They scream when they are in pain or captured (chased) by a predator. ANY other animal, and it would be right. Being held like that means it's about to fucking die.
same over here, was mowing the grass one day and one ran out in front of the mower,, thankfuly i stopped it before he went under but jesus fucking christ these lil shits are like lemmings almost.
Just so people know, first off, wild rabbits don't die from stress like domesticated ones do. Secondly, it's a proven fact that seeing wild animals in person helps children (and even adults) visualize wildlife as a thing to be considered and protected, so catching it to show his kids and letting it go is a useful way of instilling a love of nature in them.
@@siddiqahmad5193 and I bet if you asked a dog that’s having a syringe poked through it to get rid of rabies it would say “fuck you”. Don’t pretend as if animals fear has any reason. The rabbit was scared for a few minutes, then went off to eat some leaves, get over it.
Rabbits screaming are a defense mechanism actually. When a predator has them in their mouth they scream like that and the predator freaks out and drops it. It then takes off
Here are 2 reasons why this video is abuse. 1) The bunny scream means that it feels like it is being carried away by a predator and is warning the other bunnies. This is a prey animal. 2) That rabbit is a WILD ANIMAL. It doesn't like being picked up even as much as pet ones (pet rabbits already hate it) because it is a WILD ANIMAL. Wild animals are not used to human attention. AT ALL.
I'm tired of having to tell stupid people things... I'm just not even gonna tell you how stupid you sound, and I'm not just singling you out, but this is for everyone who's saying this... Stop talking for the animals... If they don't have the brains to make tools for themselves, care for themselves, then why are we making a big brouhaha!? They are their own creature, if they die out, Our fault, plus theirs. They didn't take our wrath serious enough... Survival of the fites... That's how life works... It's not unnatural, a new species is born and dies within every twenty minutes... If they can't be maintained it can't be maintained... I'm not just saying this for animals, but for humans too. Their will probably be some species that rank above us, and kill us all... Why do you think we have disease? Thing that's different from us and bunnies is that we make tool for our species to thrive longer... Face it, it's just nature, and if they can't do anything, they just can't. We can't go around saving other species when we have ours to worry about... So please... Stop stressing over something so little when we have bigger things to worry about like our own species...
Collin White Collin. You are my hero. A couple things. I understand why people want to preserve a species that has been hurt due to our advancement (such as, pollution. We do need to care for Earth because we live on it and eat from it, and if we do too much ecological damage to Earth, we will suffer and die out). Also, I understand why people would want to stop SERIOUS abuse (dog-fighting, puppy mills, or any animal living in adverse conditions we put them in, for example). But those are seriously the only two reasons I would ever be upset in favor of an animal. But the level of compassion for, example, the bunny in this video... is almost psychotic. No harm came to that bunny, although yes it probably was a little stressed but I guarantee it didn't think about it the next day. Because it's an ANIMAL and does not think at the level we do. I would much rather fight for things that make a difference in my everyday life. Corrupt government, increased taxes, etc. are things that make a negative impact. Stop wasting your stands on extremely, extremely minuscule matters such as a scared bunny.
Collin White If the world has no animals left, it will have no humans left either. Humans rely on nature to survive. It's extremely ignorant to deny that. 'huurrr, because it can't defend itself, i guess it is it's own fault it died hurrhurrrr'. So it's fine to kill children to young to pick up a knife? It's their own fault, right? Thank goodness people like you will get put in charge! Kill all the elderly, disabled and young who cannot fight. Survival of the fittest! Your life is not the only life that matters. There is a world outside of you, and I hope you get to experience it enough to realize that. A life is a life, and it should be respected. There is no excuse for torture, and I hope one day you realize how naive you sound to say what you just did.
:L He was denying the fact that the world requires animals to exist. If you think that is incorrect then you really are a total moron and my words are totally wasted on you.
Rose Walker what are you on about...... If there are no humans the animals will live just fine. If the world has no animals, humans would have a harder time surviving but can still probably barely survive. The world was created for us. Does it sound both arrogant and presumptuous to assume we're the higher race thus we can do whatever we want? Yes. But thats why we learn to be responsible with nature. Some of us are good with appreciating anything that isn't us. Most of us aren't.
Oh my God please don’t ever do that again. When they scream out of fear like that their heart can explode. Please please be careful and just leave wildlife alone💛

+jen b Yeah. I guess I'd rather see so many people speaking up for the lil' animal, even if they're overreacting, it's on the side of kindness. Hearing a bunny make a distress noise definitely freaks out both bunny and carer, as it's meant to.
WHy does it seem that almost every member of The Self-important douchebag society think that because someone actually cares about the well being of animals they are members of peta?
@@joannakrowicka6228 Yeah bunnies are pretty sensitive to other bunnies in distress. Even if they see that the bunny isn't in real danger they still see it as a threat.
I am still a wildlife rehabilitator, and I have dealt with many baby bunnies in my time and as with any wild animal, it is best that you DO NOT TOUCH IT if you can help it. It was not in trouble, it was probably curious or resting on the cool concrete. Rabbits are a sensitive species that do indeed suffer from stress, particularly when captured and played around with. Humans often forget all about how animals perceive their body language anyway, whether it's smiling and showing teeth (often done by animals to seriously threaten) or making eye contact and getting your face close (also used to threaten and can be mistaken for being under the watchful gaze of the predator, and getting close shows that you intend on attacking and eating them). There is indeed a misconception about the mother abandoning the baby due to your scent coming off on them, that is for the most part untrue, but if a rabbit sees you playing with her babies for a long time, she might leave considering them doomed, so she can survive and create a new family. They brought attention to the rabbit, and then made it scream, which increases it's chance of being noticed and possibly eaten by other creatures when released. The biggest mistake these people were making, was showing their children and ultimately setting the example that it's okay to corner and pick up wild animals if they're cute (Notice how the children were still trying to pet it and corner it after they let it go). I'm not saying that they are awful people, they didn't know any better, but they didn't think about it either. If you see a wild animal that appears to be injured, please contact your local wildlife rehabilitators or animal control, DO NOT pick it up unless absolutely necessary for the animal, (In the road or drowning) and then use thick gloves and a blanket. Keep all children and pets away from the animal, staying back, and wait until the rehabilitator has arrived. Please leave baby rabbits in their hole, their mother is watching from somewhere, and you will be attracting attention to the den.
I'm glad you're looking at this in a smart light. Most people will scream animal abuse. You are just saying that these people may have unintentionally hurt this baby instead of helped it. They didn't mean to, they should be let known that it wasn't right, but I'm glad you don't hate them or think there awful.
You are the first one who acted mature instead of attacking them for handling the animal. And you corrected the behavior and supported your statement. plus i learned a thing or two i always even as a teen tried to catch a wild rabbit and raise it was never successful. i was walking by one got a little too close and it screamed
Thanks a lot guys. If I can do something that can help people understand animals better, and keep both parties from getting hurt or sick, I will gladly take time to do something about it, whether it's typing a comment, or leading by example. Going to a local rehabilitators website or social media can be a great way to learn more about the native species around you (And probably hear some funny stories).
Thegreatcanadianlumberjack It's been awhile since I worked with anything except for baby birds and things like tortoises and snakes (since I don't currently have the room or certifications to handle bigger animals alone ( I used to work with a woman who had all of the necessary equipment, permits, and medicine, but she got married and moved), so I don't remember hearing any baby bunnies screaming. The one you passed must have been easily excitable! Did it startle you as much as you startled it? XD I do distinctly remember a squirrel growling when it was caught in a trap though.
When I found a baby bunny in the grass while it was raining, I looked for it's parents then brought it inside. I tried calling the city wildlife place but they said because it's a rodent, that they would just kill it. So I nursed it to health and released it. It lived under our deck and was best friends with my dog until we moved.
Why do so many of you people want to be offended by a human saving a rabbit's life? FFS if they left it there a cat or dog, or teen passing by could've killed it. As for the holding, if he didn't hold it like that it would've squirmed away and possibly gone into the road resulting in bunny pancake. Holding like that doesn't hurt the animal at all. The screaming, that's normal for a bunny who got caught by a predator. It won't result in the heart exploding or anything, rabbits are high strung creatures. Also the smell thing. With rabbits, a common myth is that if you touch a baby rabbit the mother will no longer care for it. 9 times out of 10, the mother will return to care for the babies after they have been handled. Another misconception is if you don’t see the mother on the nest, she has abandoned it. There are a few reasons why we don’t see mother rabbits on the nest very often. First, she only feeds her babies once per day. Second, baby bunnies don’t have much of a scent to predators. However, the mother rabbit does have a scent. She has to be cautious when she returns to the nest to avoid attracting unwanted attention from predators. If she were to sit with the bunnies, her scent would make all of them a much greater target. TL;DR WHY ARE YOU ALL SO TRIGGERED BY A MAN SAVING A LITTLE BUNS LIFE?
Josh Robertson I've seen people throw a dog out of a car going 45 mph just because the dog shat on the carpet. My old dog Chance was a rescue from someone who threw him out of the car near a icehouse and proceeded to kick him repeatedly for no other reason than "he wouldn't stop howling"
it wont die of fear it will go unconscious for a short period of time till it wakes up. Its instincts will be to run or hide in any small tight space or area.
I could understand trying to get it away from right around the door (might get hit by the door) but by the time it was far away enough from the building's door to be safe, they should have stopped

Professor Klekowskii it may be dead now, but it was a baby bunny, and it was just living it's life. You shouldn't intentionally put a rabbit, or any animal, into a state of shock. Rabbits are prey animals, the second you scare or shock them, their heart start beating abnormally fast which can cause heart attacks and kill them. Not to mention it's wild, and could have had any sort of zoonotic disease. Simple fact is to just leave them be and observe from a distance.
@@extrollacc4587 yes, you will be too. But this was boarded like abuse... what, so someone should harm you and it wouldn’t matter because “you’ll be dead soon.”
It is never okay to pick up a wild animal just because you think they are cute. Rabbits only make that sound when they are in distress or when they fear for their life. As a rabbit owner, this is very distressing.

I'm not butthurt I'm just tired of stupid people existing. Overall I'm glad they let the little guy go but how fucking presumptions of a person to think they could just grab hold and do whatever they want with an animal all in the name of a laugh.
For people who think this is a bad idea: you're absolutely right, a rabbit screaming like this is very unhealthy and often deadly as it's only caused by extreme fear and rabbits don't handle fear very well, these guys were very unprofessional but here's my personal opinion. There are videos of people shooting rabbits just so they can test out their new pellet guns on RUclips, cats and dogs both eat rabbits and often kill them for food or just sport so if you're a rabbit lover and there are cats or dogs around, you definitely want to get them out of harm's way in whatever way possible, if it starts screaming like that then do your best to calm it down, put it in a cage or something and just leave it alone for a while, feed it and get it used to you, while you COULD raise it as your pet or something, the best thing to do is to turn it over to a wildlife sanctuary where It would be taken care of by professionals but then again I myself am no professional, I saved one from my cat once and it lived for a couple of weeks then died mysteriously, it shouldn't have been stressed as it was comfortable, interactive and hadn't even opened it's eyes yet, it was well fed and showed no signs of injury and yet it went from opening it's eyes and hopping around to dead in a matter of minutes and I have no explanation for it and I wish I turned it over to someone who knew what they were doing
Ratan Bharadwaj that's a breed or possibly other species of rabbit that screams under stress. Since it's a wild rabbit it gets stressed when near other creatures, like humans. The result of this video were inevitable.
Pretty sure this bunny wasn't happy. The poor thing was terrified. It's obviously a young, wild rabbit. Rabbits of this size are actually old enough to find food for themselves, and will usually find friends to help too, so they don't need to be messing with it.

Their metabolism is naturally MUCH faster than ours. Even when they're calm, their hearts still bang away like lightning, relative to ours.
As someone who has raised rabbits; don't touch, pick up, or hold a baby rabbit when it's stressed like that.
***** Or any rabbit when it's in that state for that matter.
Ray Lee I didn't finish reading it. You believe what you believe and I believe what I believe/ Okay? Okay :)
Yes. That's what I thought at first, the rabbit should've been release. Before rabbits die, they scream like that. Had the dude hold him longer, the rabbit would pass out from stress if I'm not mistaken.
That noise means the rabbit is in distress. You really should not hold them like that unless they are very comfortable with you.

life and death are natural parts of life. the bird, i'll say again, needs to eat and kills quickly usually on impact. What we see in the video is terrifying the rabbit, dragging it out, and I dont think you've ever had a cardiac issue but they arent exactly painless or instant. yes this rabbit is fine, people thinking "oh i can catch the rabbit I saw it in a video" and then torturing more is a problem. You are objectively wrong here. fear and stress reduce life in all things, that's a fact. rabbits are biologically so skittish that they can die is they are scared enough, that is a fact. so you can take your dumbass shit out of here.

@@UnknownGamer-gd6kh Oh rly

The scream is the distress call
Actually no! The nature of a rabbit's scream is not actually a cry for help, as other rabbits will ignore it! What it actually is, is a last ditch effort to escape. By making a shill cry, the rabbit hopes to startle or make it's predator uncomfortable enough to drop it. It's not very effective on hardened predators like wolves, but very effective on humans, who often respond with sympathy to these kinds of vocalizations!
Ethan Davies There was a rabbit in my backyard and I played it and it went on high alert

It's like something from a Disney cartoon short where Donald mistakes Dale for a gun; the later starts screaming "BANG BANG BANG!" 🤣
Rose Walker
what are you on about......
I wanna see that now.
Wait until these idiots learn about slaughter houses.
Sam Johnson dude, we get that. But slaughter houses finish the job quick. These guys are just torturing the rabbit
By... Picking it up?
And also this video was 7 years ago a average rabbit life span is 1-2 years in the wild even if it didn't die from trauma which I highly doubt it did it would be dead for at least 5 years
When a bunny screams it is either in a lot of pain or extremely scared
Unfortunatley when my dog grabbed a baby rabbit and it screamed, she loved it and continued to bite down then tossed into the air and then caught it again.
W_Jur_ yeah that's exactly what happens .....😵when a starving coyote grabs a rabbit....the rabbit squeals a few times and the coyote that has it in its mouth quickly releases it and runs away in terror along with all the other predator animals that were closing in when the heard the attack and smelled blood😵
W_Jur_ Yup, my sisters poor rabbits cried out so hard when a dog somehow got into our yard and murdered them :'(

Please don't catch tiny wild rabbits like this, they only scream when they are terrified (at this point they scream to alert other bunnies of danger while knowing they're about to get killed...). Rabbits can even die from an heart attack if they get too scared, try to at least let them on the ground.

so if I shake a rabbit furiously,it would die of a heart attack? cool! now I have another method of killing them besides throat cutting or shooting

Teacher: what is the loudest animal on earth?
Me:BUNNIES

@@extrollacc4587 Finally! Someone with sense!

It is never okay to pick up a wild animal just because you think they are cute. Rabbits only make that sound when they are in distress or when they fear for their life. As a rabbit owner, this is very distressing.

I concur, that is a good way to catch some disease--especially if it bites.
It can also kill the rabbit. Bunnies make sounds like that when they're either in a lot of pain or extremely stressed/scared; extreme stress in rabbits often causes heart attacks and they can die.

There are videos of people shooting rabbits just so they can test out their new pellet guns on RUclips, cats and dogs both eat rabbits and often kill them for food or just sport so if you're a rabbit lover and there are cats or dogs around, you definitely want to get them out of harm's way in whatever way possible, if it starts screaming like that then do your best to calm it down, put it in a cage or something and just leave it alone for a while, feed it and get it used to you, while you COULD raise it as your pet or something, the best thing to do is to turn it over to a wildlife sanctuary where It would be taken care of by professionals but then again I myself am no professional, I saved one from my cat once and it lived for a couple of weeks then died mysteriously, it shouldn't have been stressed as it was comfortable, interactive and hadn't even opened it's eyes yet, it was well fed and showed no signs of injury and yet it went from opening it's eyes and hopping around to dead in a matter of minutes and I have no explanation for it and I wish I turned it over to someone who knew what they were doing

no, they also do that when they are happy or somebody is petting them
Pretty sure this bunny wasn't happy. The poor thing was terrified. It's obviously a young, wild rabbit. Rabbits of this size are actually old enough to find food for themselves, and will usually find friends to help too, so they don't need to be messing with it.
