      Weather permitting, I hope to get some Coosa board core installed this week. Yes, transom demo isn't technical, but it's part of the process, and I thought it was worth documenting, especially for the folks out there who have never done a transom replacement before. Thanks for watching

    Hey Cap Joe, Hope your doing well down in Bama! All is good over here in the Philippines. Just showing my support to you. That multi tool is priceless. I sent mine from Texas to the Philippines this last August. It is so great to have it here working. Priceless. I certainly need a vacuum assist sander. I have a makita and B&D here but no vac assist and it makes a mess. My videos are behind as I cover our whole life beachside here not just my boat projects only. I am currently building mini canoes for outriggers on my native boat build. It's really coming along. I will throw you another shout out soon. Take care

    Make a few wedges out of UHMW, makes coring a transom easier. I make them 12-16” in length, 1-4” wide, and taper them from 1/8” - 1 1/2” (buy 3” block and cut diagonally). Super tough to hammer on and won’t damage the glass. Hammer them between the ply’s to help hold and separate the core material while you’re prying/cutting.

    The 4 inch angle grinder is the most dangerous tool in the workshop very effective. Though and I can't wait to watch this series because I want a similar boat and there's no way I can pay today's prices. So it's going to have to be used and affordable and sweat equity. It's going to be my best friend

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  4 дня назад

      Yes, a 4.5 to 5 inch angle grinder is hard to beat when it comes to material removal, but like all power tools, they can be dangerous to operate. Its always a good idea to wear quality ppe when operating these kind of tools. Thanks for watching!

      I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! I'm probably going to be working on the transom over the next few episodes. I don't think I am going to be filling any more holes in the console. We will most likely be reusing the rod holders, and the large holes in the dash, for the instruments and glove box. I did show filling in the speaker holes in a previous console repair video. IT's another Coosa Board Special & I think I'd be springing to buy it since my expensive engine will be hanging on the handy work
    and I want to see that next time. I saw one transom done & it was a larger boat but the guy used some sort of liquid material that
    when mixed turned into some super hard stuff & as I recall it hardened pretty quick? I forget all the prep he did but he did pour a
    material into the transom filling it up. I guess in certain situations one might go that route but I like the Coosa Board more...
    I like it because you like it = that's good enough for my limited knowledge. You are the expert, Sir.... see you next time & thanks

Initial problem is removing the motor and transmission. The old girl is worth the money it will cost, just hesitant if these old bones are up to the task. Glad your taking the time to share your generations of knowledge and experience. I've done transom replacements, stringers, etc as that was the only way i could afford to boat in my 20s, id talk with my local resin suppliers and outboard mechanics that luckily had some old timers that enjoyed sharing advice and tips. Id buy a turd of a boat with a buddy that was a sweet hull but had some issues, fix it, get the engine running and use it for a year and then sell it off to fund the next slighty cooler hull. Sometimes id steal the outboard off it and slap it on the next hull. Now i got a little keywest 2300 that was repowered and its been good little hull. Every time I see a sweet build i get the itch to start on the next project. That said i know how much work is involved so i choose my projects carefully.

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  День назад

      Sure, I would be happy to show you how to install a brass drain tube. Having the crimping tool is a big part of doing it correctly. I can tell you that cutting the tube about 1/8 of an inch longer than the actual full thickness of the transom is what you want to do. Then using a high-quality marine sealant around the tube, something like 3m 5200 or 4200 is the way to go. I hope this helps until I get the video out for you. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Joe when making a transom how do you calculate the material? i.e if you're fitting more than one outboard engine how do you know how much coosa board to use & how much fibreglass to laminate over it?

  • @countryracer69
    @countryracer69 4 дня назад +2

    Doing my 10th transom since getting into full boat works about 3 years ago. And yes the multi-tool is a pure necessity.
    This latest one is my day cruiser 25' jet! Getting the old repair removed is being difficult. Seems like there was a lot of layers of glass between the original skin and the wood that stuck really well on about 50% of it. And hardly bonded at all on the rest.
    I do have a question. For sand/grinding in a big area many like you use a fesstool that looks a lot like the forced rotation polisher at HF. Im not doing this for a living but am making side money that helps me restore my own hulls. Any chance you know if that hf tool is similar? $600 vs 120 is real!

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  4 дня назад +2

      Cool, thanks for sharing your experiences with the channel! I haven't personally ran the Hf version of this sander, but I do understand cost vs benefits for sure! Festool makes a great product, and I try to run the best equipment I can afford, but if you aren't doing this kind of work everyday, it may not be worth it to you. I hope this helps,and I appreciate you watching!

  • @ontimespiva

    So I am a little confused. Is the plywood there as a reinforcement to build strength after it came out of the mold? I assume that was the cheaper option when it was built instead of adding multiple layers of glass in the mold? I'm questioning my transom now..

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  4 дня назад +2

      Yes, almost all boat transoms have either plywood or some type of synthetic core material as a reinforcement. It's pretty common for the plywood core to go bad after a number of years in service. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and I appreciate you watching!

    • @ontimespiva

      In engineering terms, strength is increase greatly by thickness. It is an exponential increase in strength. Wood is a cheaper, strong filler material that helps the overall strength quickly. But as you can see, wood has its limitations.
