Kudos for always revealing your thought process in building a particular way Corporal. I’ve always said, recruits can be shown how to approach any given situation. However, it’s the “whys” that teach them to think ahead knowing what comes after every action they take. Directions to face a shelter, is your fire visible and from how far away, drainage of camp and water infiltration, etc. Another fine video!

This is one of the best ones I’ve seen you do yet. Those old log cabins are amazing. You can salvage some really excellent quality wood work from an old log cabin from the 1800s... Bearing in mind that everything would’ve been shaped and cut by hand. They were usually made out of heart pine or hardwood. You can re-purpose the timber’s and boards again.
When I lived overseas I saw log beams that were put in the roof of old buildings that had been salvaged from even older buildings. The timber’s were hundreds of years old. My grandparents lived in a small two room cabin and where my dad was born in the rural South. He told me stories. I actually got to visit the place he grew up and the old about how all seven of them lived in that little shack. It was a timber frame clad with vertical planks and roofed with wood shingles called shakes then later reroofed where the metal sheeting. The 1940s wood and gas oven and old potbelly stove were still in the cabin. I wish I could have taken them out but it belonged to somebody else at that time. The guy had the whole Place not down a few years later which was really sad. I got permission to take a few of the bits and pieces from the cabin before he tore it down. Fat wood shavings is one of my favorite things to start fires with but I also am very fond of Eastern red Cedar bark strips crushed up and rolled into a ball. Another excellent corporals corner

That fire would have burned much slower had you shut the door. Also, no need to have an additional fire under your cooking - when you keep the firebox closed, the heat travels across to the oven and hot plates. I use one of these old stoves for heat and cooking, and can vouch for how much more efficient they are when used properly. They are truly the prepper's best friend.

But, remember when you build your shack, if you can position one side of your cabin in an area that get alot of sun, and use Plexiglas, or clear plastic roofing there, you will get alot of passive solar heat during the day... Corporal I'm grinning from ear to ear ... Reminds me of the runaway times of the kids from my neighborhood.... We blasted in forts, a little bit little rascals, a little army, and alot of Ninja...thank you for the cheer and joys of the moment, some of the greatest memories, as I started out as a brownie, then went to a girl scout, so much love for spending time learning something new, having the survival skills necessary to make it outdoors, enjoying the fruits of hot meals of ones labor,. Got to love what you do and it shows!!!! Happy Forts, Happy, Happy.......another thought.... Smiling.... Take a man out to the woods, but can't take woods out of the man.....!!!!!!

That stove/fireplace you rigged up is a winner. I also like the humor you always have in your abilities, the clay tiles for arm cannons, bullseye.

I would be quite interested to see a multi part series about building a small shed size cabin/dugout shelter with homemade fireplace and the like that gets improved through out the year. Or maybe a once a month update on the structure as it gets insulated and etc.

This is a great video! Let's say you gotta reuse material from what's left of your house after a natural disaster like a tornado or something... Great use of oven, because one could gut out the one they have/find and use it as well. And if the refrigerator is still intact lay it down ice it up. Still useable for food/drink for the time being if a cooler isn't in sight. If not dig a hole line it up with a tarp/shower curtain cover with random debris for stealth storage. Keep the videos coming!

I give one vote for the return of the 30 minute video, or the occasional 30min video. Love the good campfire chat sharing your thoughts on whatever and maybe a Q/A segment? Love a corporals corner Sunday. Thanks as always for the honest work and teaching.
