I found the way to declutter things I am emotionally attached too. I put them all together in one big “happy bag” and I imagine they all have party inside lol
I’ve been hoarding because of trauma (I’ve always had a tendency towards chaos but it got really out of control after some traumatic experiences) and what I realised is the connection between emotions and the things I’ve collected. Some of them make me feel like a failure because they were things I wanted to attempt but didn’t manage to (for example I have hoarded healthy food because I wanted to change my eating habits) and/or because I am regretful of all the money I spent (because of the hoarding I am also in debt). So whenever I start decluttering there’s always a stage when I stumble upon some big emotion. What has helped me is to let these emotions flow, cry if I had to, understand the issue behind the stuff and learn to let the past go too. It is hard work (not only physically but especially emotionally) but it is a labour of self love ultimately. So if you, like me, came here for inspiration because you were feeling stuck with and by your stuff, please be kind to yourself first and foremost and know that it is okay if it’s difficult and that you CAN overcome this 💚
I like the resistance analogy because it can apply to alot of things in life. I'm trying to apply it to my own life right now. If you force yourself to start off slow you'll slowly build up the desire to go fast and then when you finally allow yourself to go fast you'll be motivated not to stop.
I don't have the resistance, I now have the complete and utter drive to declutter!!!! It is all I can think about and all I want to do!!! It is taking up so much of my head space & time even just thinking about it. It is the overwhelm of the new messes.the piles, the things that get left undone, due to de-cluttering. Feeling like no matter how much I do, they're are still insurmountable quantity of items to Get thru. Even just the thought of organizing pics on my computer and deleting thousands of emails. I Get rid of a bunch and then empty out a few drawers and I just got a new pile! It's decision fatigue, and I believe I have burnout, because it's all I think about and it's what I've been learning about since I moved over a year ago. But it in these last months it seems like it's all I think about pretty much! Like an obsession. I think their will be a magical day, turning point when I feel like I'll eventually have it done & can just do regular maintenance. I have the struggle of trying to find the proper way to dispose of items, disposing of in ethical ways, not "trashing" and making sure my items go to the right homes. 😱😩😓
Same for me. It's easy for me to decide that I want to declutter, but it takes a lot of time to dispose of them the way I want. It's getting better though. But that said: I am decluttering for maybe 4-5 years now and still feel like I'm not done yet ;)
When I was a stay at home mom, I was obsessed with getting rid of stuff, as I was home all the time pretty much. I did get rid of stuff that we no longer used and still do this when I feel overstuffed with stuff. Wow what an epic and concise podcast video about how kick out the overwhelming. I agree that to let go overwhelmed is start with some momentum that we know and just do it, but at the beginning we must slowly to do the momentum. Thank a lot for the video. I realize that to make a podcast video in youtube is hard, but I like it. Anyone wants to give me a feedback, I will wait for it.
I've done this game a couple of times and for the most part it was pretty easy and it felt so good once I done and donated everything. I plan to start it again this new month. I'm sure it going to be more challenging but I feel I'm still holding on things I think I might need but haven't since I started my journey back in October. Wish me luck!
Life has it's overwhelming moments, days and years. Tragedy, illness, financial loss, etc. If I have learned anything valuable in the days I have lived it is "that you can only live one moment at a time". I encourage anyone who needs to declutter to recognize that they will get through it but it is important to acknowledge the end goal. Make up your mind to have success in your goal to minimal comfort, beauty and function in your life. For fun (even though I am vegetarian) I use the "pepperoni concept", taking care of things one slice at a time. Lol :-) have fun, enjoy the process and make sure to work hard at it but take time to rest, eat a healthy meal and reward yourself with a good pat on the back too.
@@spring7643 It is true that taking time to accomplish the de-cluttering process means that decisions are made in a way that is sensitive and thoughtful. No rush decisions. True but it’s also a good challenge to set the example. Given circumstances may be a little more difficult but I live with people who are clutter critters (hoarders) and I couldn’t bare the suffocation of so many things, mine included. So I got rid of what doesn’t serve me, donated my belongings over a dozen times for 3 years. It was definitely hard because of personal attachments, but worth my sanity. They hate my space now because it’s what they want but choose not to put the time in. I’m happier, I have a lot of room now and I still maintain the minimum when I catch myself wanting to buy everything or save every single sentimental gift. I hope my story helped
Happy August everyone. The first of the month is always a great time to start playing the minimalism game. That's my goal for this month. This can help you be less overwhelmed with your clutter.
I am on of those people. I tried that minimalism game and if its a day I am home all day I end up parting with 500 things by day 7 or so. lol I am about to start just closing my eyes and throwing out things. lol
Yes!! How to not feel overwhelmed when you've had 2 good purges of stuff and support a family. We have a bonus baby on the way ,so I'm trying to reduce our stuff further. It can feel overwhelming at times. Advice please!!
My problem is that sometimes is a lot of work to get rid of things "the right way" I mean not just throwing away but donate/sell online .. etc And I feel that I am hyper aware of the stuff that I don't need so much it became an irritating burden that doesn't get much better even if I got rid of many things
I have issues getting rid of things that other people can use. I have carloads of stuff to take to donate, but haven't taken it yet. And I have some stuff that I need to sell, but haven't posted yet. I have no motivation at this point.
Maybe ask the help of a friend or family member to assist you to bring things to the charity of your choice. Be motivated by the fact that as soon as you let it go, it goes into the hands of someone who could make better use of it. Think of generosity and charity and the happiness it could bring to someone else. All the best !!!
Just do one thing...drop off your donate items. Pick up the phone & put into place your items you want to sell. Make a list with a real timeline. Do it. One thing. Today.
My problem is not the decluttering it's not having a car to take things to donate to charity shops. Meaning I'm organising stuff to take but I can only take a little there at a time. So stuff is waiting around for ages for me to take it each time. It's all good stuff so it would be wasteful to throw it away especially when charity can make money from it.
I attempted the 30 day game earlier this year and I failed. I was attempting it again in August, but am failing again as I own around 300 items including everything. But l will still attempt, one item a day or two, coz it feels blissful to own less and less. 🤗🤗🙏
Yes, I'm into minimalism. But I don't know how I describe my feelings. I want to declutter things by donating some of my stuff. But I'm kinda worried if what will happen with the things I donated. If it will just go on the garbage or someone will actually use it. I don't know if its guilt but knowing that the "things" I used to own cause a lot of energy which is not good in our environment makes me terified. I don't know what to do.
Possibly you could look at things as just, things and not as causing a lot of energy. Because it doesn’t cause energy. It’s just there :) taking up space in your home and brain. You can’t live in fear if what will happen to your stuff, that’s paranoia and it is no good for your health.
@@thetreasureinthefield hi. Maybe, I really feel guilty because of my action like buying stuff I think I need but not really. And I think this is my lesson not to purchase more stuff and be mindful about the things I'll buy. 😊
I want to declutter, but one situation has come and sticks around. And I can’t believe that fear has gripped everyone and anything useful being given away is being refused. So I am forced to toss those things into a dumpster all because people’s fears of that situation. Yet what is gotten so far, is some cleared space in which I can use crutches if needed.
My question is what do you do with all the stuff you want to get rid of if you don't have a way to get it to a donation site? Where do you put it all until you get it out of the house? I end up with mountains that ended up sitting around in heaps everywhere and looked worse than before I started. Not everyone has transportation or an easy way to remove it all. Nobody ever seems to talk about what to do with all the crap once you decide to get rid of it. Some donation sites are limiting how many bags/boxes you can drop off because although going minimal is catching on like wildfire its also overloading the donation stores... any ideas on this? Its way too expensive where I live to to pay extra to have it all go into the trash bins [weight costs] and we are not allowed skips unless its for construction/demolition so that's not an option either. It grinds my progress to a halt which is so frustrating!
