There's a great bit in this episode where Chief Wiggam says "First we'll be rounding up your tired, then your poor, then your huddled masses yearning to breathe free". Overall it's a dark episode. And yet another example of The Simpsons using a logical fallacy as a central plot point, to illustrate and educate the audience. Thanks for this video!
I love that in the Simpsons universe, the mayor of a small and insignificant town has the authority to do something that only the federal government has the authority on. This show is hilarious.
It’s a disingenuous example. While technically immigrant taxes are a separate issue from the bear tax this video is implying immigrants have no effect on taxes. It’s only a red herring for Springfield because Springfield is 99% white with one Indian guy in it.
This is only a red herring if Springfield has little to no immigration. If the mayor brought this up today immigrant welfare is 1000x more costly than their little bear tax.
@tomr6955 It's not theft you moron. Or if it is, it shouldn't matter, capitalists suck. Also, who said it had to be from private enterprise? Nationalise the industry and do it like the Soviet Union or DPRK which managed to not have taxes or to have very low taxes(like the Soviet Union's case for instance.) I'm not "juvenile and delusional, idealistic, naive."
@tomr6955 I don't want to start a business and big businesses should be taxed the most, if we are to have private enterprise at all. That would be fair.
@tomr6955 "YOUR WAGES FUND PUBLIC THINGS", OH MY GOD, YOU DEFINED TAXATION! THAT'S WHAT TAXING CIVILIANS IS LIKE! A PORTION OF YOUR WAGES IS TAKEN TO FUND PUBLIC THINGS! There should be compensation for labour, ignoram'.
@tomr6955 I'm over 15, you moron. And there have been countries where people didn't have to pay taxes... Idiot. I'm not deluded, you are with capitalist realism which ironically enough isn't realistic. Using the billions in Profis from enterprises to better compensate workers, to improve the enterprise, and to maintain society is good. Maybe I ought to just drop out of society and live in the wild, in the woods?
@tomr6955 Excuse me, but if i understood it right I think you argument is not logical. His propositions was: "The people shouldn't have to pay taxes. Use profits to fund public things..." So the correct answer would have been either: Using profits to found public thing is a good/bad idea, because... Instead you proposed, that they either start a business and sacrifice its profit for public service, or have to discard their idea which is a false dilemma (a fallacy). At the same time, this was also a red herring, a fallacy of irrelevance, because them starting a business or not is totally irrelevant to the question of whether his idea is good or bad. Also your proposition was a straw-man argument, as it misrepresented their idea of profits in general should be used for public interest, but in your representation only they should have done it, which is not the same. (Im not sure if i should mention or not the obvious ad hominem attacks specifically directed at their age.)
It might not matter, whatever the issue everyone else is complaining about she always uses the cry: "won't sombody please think of the children?" It's almost like the only criticism she has, even if there are bigger problems going on
Poor choice for Red Hearing. Accepting tens of millions of illegal alien migrants is extremely expensive to American tax payers. Restaurants and Agribusiness get the illegal alien's very cheap labor and pass on all the costs of education, subsidized housing, medical costs, policing, prisons to tax payers. Does anyone think sub minimum wage illegal aliens pay for $30,000 + cost of a Chicago Public School education per student. Yeah, we know Chicago Public School education sucks with CTU Chicago Teachers Union insiders like our new mayor Brandon Johnson taking all the money for themselves then avoiding class room teaching like he did. But, yeah - the American welfare state is extremely expensive to pay for illegal immigrants. This Simpson example of a Red Hearing fallacy doesn't work.
This isn't a red herring because illegal immigrants are a huge financial burden on the state. They take billions from public programs; have no social security numbers and thus pay no taxes; increase crime in areas where they congregate, thereby necessitating further investment in police services while diminishing the property taxes the local government can charge as property values fall; they almost always vote in people who promise to give them more financial aid. The Mayor might've been using this as a red herring but, politically, it ain't.
How do they take billions from public programs? IF the don't have a SSN how are they receiving benefits? They pay vat's, which add up to more than income taxes on low wage earners. MUCH more. Odds are most of these illegals would not even pay income tax as they don't earn enough. Every statistic I have seen shows people in the country illegally commit less crime than people born in the country. Might be because drawing more attention to themselves increases the risk of deportation, but I don't know what the actual cause is, only that the result is less crime committed. This also debunks the lower property taxes. And I don't understand what you mean by voting. Who is voting? The illegal immigrants? They can't vote. They won't be on the voter roll, and have nothing to demonstrate they should be added. You are the perfect example of how this red herring works. Politicians cook up lies about how illegals make things worse. You swallow uit hook line and sinker, thereby ignoring the real reasons for your problems, which are caused by said politicians. I mean this is just a masterclass of an example. It almost makes me thing you did this as satire. Almost. I would suggest you look up everything I told you. I'm some random person on the internet. You shouldn't believe me. But all of this is readily available to find. Studies. Laws. Enforcement. You could educate yourself if you choose to.
Yeah this isn't about whether illegal immigration is a red herring. It's if the mayor in this situation is using the issue of illegal immigration as a red herring. The issue of the episode is they don't want to pay the bear tax but still want services to prevent bears from attacking them (a bear escaped from the zoo, creating a desire among the public to be protected from bear attacks). Whether or not, illegal immigration gets solved, the bear tax will still be there and they will be unhappy. The mayor will have to create a new red herring, maybe public education costs too much, to avoid dealing with eliminating the bear tax that doesn't need to exists because there's no bear problem. The Mayor just doesn't want to be the one to tell the public there is no bear problem and be politically harmed in the next election. Perception is reality and the citizens believe they need expensive anti bear patrols. This video is not about the merits of supporting or not supporting illegal immigration. It's about a red herring. Any political issue, liberal or conservative can be used as a red herring. A red herring says nothing about the merits of the political issue, only that it's used to distract voters from the issue they care about.
@@Mr.Ambrose_Dyer_Armitage_Esq. Because your comment isn't related to the video haha. You don't understand what a red herring is. This video isn't about the downsides of illegal immigration, whatever you think they are.
